My title is just one of the corny jokes he says in class. It depends on what kind of humor you're into. He'll get off topic every class talking about the end of the world and his fire drill stories, which will either make you crack up or be like wtf. I was one of the ones that laughed cause you can just tell he doesn't give two sh*ts anymore. The paper at the end of the semester is ungodly easy - you'd have to be a dumbass to not get an A on it. All you have to write is how your major is involved with computers. The exams were tricky, but he gives you the answers after and lets you correct your test, then he'll change your grade. He also lets you use cheat sheets. You won't learn much in his class but it won't matter if you're just taking it for a gen ed. Take him, he'll crack you up. Oh, also he doesn't take attendance and when he asks a question, he will most likely read off the wrong class roster........everyday.

Arch is the easiest professor you could possibly have. I didn't miss a POINT the entire semester. He lets you use a "cheat sheet" front and back of anything you want on the test. That and he's hilarious you'll laugh so much in his class if you decide to attend since attendance isn't taken.

Prof. Arch is the man. Period. He is sooooooo funny~ I laugh really hard every single class, and I have him at 9 so it's a great class to wake up to. He's so old and just doesn't give a sh*t what you do anymore, but you would have to be mentally retarded not to understand the material he's teaching in this class. He's very liberal, which I think is great, and has no problem bashing the republican candidates out loud, not caring who he offends. He's just awesome. Take him before he retires- seriously!

I don't really know anything about computers, but I still got an A in Arch's class. He's a funny guy and since he's about to retire he doesn't care anymore. The class was supposed to include a paper assignment but he just forgot to assign it. Fine with me. Take this great man while he's still teaching. You spend just as much time listening to his obscene jokes as you do learning about computer science.

Firstly, I had Dr. Arch last semester and I have to say it was my favorite class of my first semester at Ship. He has a great sense of humor as long as youre not a boring person. People don't give him credit for how well he teaches things, many people complain about his thoroughness of things but íf you pay completely attention you learn a lot about all the basic and advanced data structures no matter your level as long as you have a basic understanding of java's syntax. Unfortunately he's retiring which is sad because I wish I could take another class with him. Even through all of his references to his website (mynakedbody.com) and the awkward conversations about many other inappropriate subjects it was still a great class. Try to take what classes you can with him before he leaves us.

I rated him as positive bc its an easy A. But the class is miserable. He has the strangest sense of humor I have ever heard. I sometimes just sat in class laughing, wondering what the heck he is talking about. We only talk about computers for 10% of the time. The notes are ridiculous, but the tests are fairly easy. You have one 3-5 page paper due, which is easy. So this class is definitely an easy A, but you first have to get through listening to him everyday..

This Professor is so easy, you go to class and you dont do anything but play on the computer. If you do bad on his exams he will let you take them over again. He is like a High School Teacher. Take him if you need any classes related to him, and recieve your A.

Professor Arch is friggin awesome. I have him for CS2 and I really like the laid back nature of his class. He goes off on little tangents on a regular basis. I don't mind that though. They keep the class entertained. Some of the projects can be challenging, but thats OK. As Prof arch would say: "You may leave my class empty headed, but not empty handed!" (then he gave out some song lyrics from The Clash)

I don't know how so many of the commentors were able to get A's in his class. He gives fairly hard tests where it's almost impossible to get an A, but very easy to get a low B, and you would have to be pretty dumb to get below a C. He does an OK job teaching and he will entertain you with good stories!

He went through algorithms step by step, and that's how i like to learn stuff. I learned a lot in his data structures class. Data Structures is one of the big important classes and i'm glad i had it under Arch. programming assignments were just the right difficulty. they made you think, but were very doable. arch is good. take him.

Dr. Arch is one of the best teachers I've personally ever had. His teaching style takes some time to get used to but once you know it you're set. His tests are fair, if not easy. He tends to go off on a tangent for seemingly no reason, but the class always ends up laughing. Any teacher who can make the class laugh and learn at the same time is definitely one of the best. I'd recommend him for any Comp. Sci. class and I hope to take him for as many classes as I possibly can, he is awesome!!!!!

Dr. Arch is definitely in his own world. He always starts off with the best of intentions to teach, but then always rabbit trails off and starts telling stories about stuff that is completely irrelevant. He is a real nice guy though and he likes to joke around a lot. I have him at 8 am and have no problem staying awake. The only complaints I have is that when you go to ask him for help with a program, he doesn't even look at your code, just tries to give you his code and expects yours to work with it which it rarely does. Usually you have to change a bunch of code to get it to work. The only other complaint is some of his test questions are trick questions, and he does it on purpose. But overall, he is a good teacher and I enjoyed having him.

I've had Dr. Arch for 4 courses. He's a really nice guy who tells stories constantly. If you have him for 2 or more classes you've heard them all, yet he keeps telling them. He doesn't teach, so I wouldn't recommend taking him for something you want to learn, but his classes are relatively easy and he's a pretty decent grader, if in fact he gives you anything to grade. I took him for an actual coding course and had to drop him because he doesn't teach the code, he just explains the theory behind what it should do, and expects you to know how to code it already. As long as the course isn't a pertinent one, take him for it.

Dr. Arch is one of the best profs at this university. He's funny, he keeps class interesting, his assignments are reasonable, and he's simply a great guy. He'll go completely off topic and start ranting about something, and some of the funniest stories I have are from his class. He doesn't take attendance, and he doesn't hold a few missed classes against you. Take John Arch for any course you can.

I had Arch 9am, everyone in the class just basically sat there and stared at him, so he wasn't very entertaining. He tells some stories, but told more to other classes beceause i think they might have listened. Not a bad teacher at all and i would recomend taking him.

His class really isn't too bad... he talks a lot about totally random crap that has nothing to do with the subject. He hardly helps you... he doesn't really do much in the class, he gives you a paper and says do it... and there's really no way to work on the projects outside of class because the room is the only one with the program on it... I wouldn't take him again ... the work is interesting in his class but he is just ... weird

First of all I looked at the ratings of all CS profs and was shocked that Dr. Arch is rated highly. He has to be in the bottom 3 CS profs in my opinion. Anyone that is serious about learning computer science should NEVER take Dr. Arch. His class is just a joke. We were supposed to learn about Software Engineering this semester, however I did not learn anything that I didn't already know about SE. Class with Arch isn't even worth going to, cause 90% of the time is him telling stories of his life about tax law and his bodily functions. If you want something to save you from his boring stories, check out addictinggames.com during his class. Its a whole lot more interesting. The tests were ok, some hard questions but he's the easiest grader in the world and the semester project wasn't bad (even tho it was just a web page and not actual software). The main problem with arch is that you don't learn anything. Some people might like that but I don't think thats a good thing for a 400 level course. I'm tempted to say that I would have learned more had Dr. Thomas been teaching the class, but that might be pushing it. Give me Briggs, Wellington, and Mooney any day.

Subject: Funny guy, terrible teacher.  (May 19 2006, 12:10PM)
Student: Anonymous (Computer Science)
Class:Computer Science I (B)
12 of 37 students found this review helpful.

I didn't really learn anything from this man. His class consisted of him basically reading the information from the overheads verbatim, and then every five minutes or so going off on unrelated (although very funny) tangents where he would bring up some completely random anecdote from his personal life. The overheads were pointless, they rarely had any code on them and were too ambiguous to be helpful. He did pass out programs regularly which were helpful, and we had easy labs based on tweaking the programs he handed out. However, the programs he assigned for us to do ourselves were entirely too hard, especially the last one. He didn't cover all of the concepts required to do the programs, and the ones he did cover he just referenced vaguely. Overall, the bad outweighs the good and I wouldn't really recommend this class. It's not that hard to get a good grade though.

He's funny. He's nice. I would even call him wise. But as a prof, he could be better. He spent far too much time ranting about everything and anything under the sun and not enough time lecturing. At times, he would also assign us busy work, which was not even collected for credit. His tests are challenging but easily passable if you've attended class. All in all, he's a great guy, but a not so great prof.

12 of 37 students found this review helpful.

Dr. Arch is a nice guy, and his classes are easy to pass, but... You don't really learn anything. Most people just play on the computer during his lectures, as he's impossible to follow, and usually spends an hour and 45 minutes talking about random sh*t, and briefly mentioning AI every now and again. His overheads consist of sentence fragments with no information on them, and his tests consist of sentence fragments of one or two words, and a paragraph to answer in. I also got the feeling he didn't really put in much effort to teaching the course, the projects weren't graded quickly or throughly, I got the impression he'd glance at each one and just write down a B or A. He's very easy to get along with, and by far one of the most fun professors to have, but I didn't learn much. Then again, it was AI, so who really cares? His other classes may be much different.

The class wasn't hard. If you wrote answers that seemed to make sense he generally gives them a good grade. Downside: Notes (all overhead) consist of mainly bland questions such as "What is AI?" and he hardly explains anything, he'll just lecture about "well we really don't know... what is this? what is that?" but it all boils down to you really not learning much from him at all other than a few good jokes to tell your friends because of his constant humor... if you're looking to learn, go elsewhere...
