Reading all these comments and hearing people's too I thought this dude was impossible but first day changed it all he don't give - grades so if you get a 80 it's a 3.0. Results section he gives is cake because he gives the format and test are easy too. Only I advise you to do is read the book. If you getting through any college course with high Bs and As I don't know how with out reading the book so it shouldn't be a surprise to you.

Dr. Hale is a wonderful professor - he is so passionate about what he is teaching and really wants you to learn. He is always there to help and his exams are a piece of cake, as long as you study. If you don't like psychology, you may not like this class, but if you want to learn about psych, TAKE HIM! He is a good guy and offers tons of extra credit. He gives like 5-6 exams but drops your lowest test grade. Don't listen to anyone else, he is really awesome. OH PS...don't EVER, EVER take out your cell at any time, he hates them!

Professor Hale is a great guy who looks out for his students and even sets his watch for the end of class, but sometimes he keeps you a little late anyway. This is a great class but he could help explain things a little better, I learned a lot of the things in high school anatomy but if I hadn't he would have confused me. But overall, if you try you will do well and he's always there for you.

Dr. Hale's a really nice guy, he's very passionate about teaching and always takes the time to answer any questions you have. His lectures are fun because he changes his media every so often from notes to videoclips to in class work. His tests are hard but not the worst (not like a Bartoli test that's for sure)... you MUST put in the study time. He's very smart and LOVES to talk about the effects of alcohol on people since that's his research. He repeats some stories in class and has a New England accent which is pretty funny, especially when he ends words with an "r" like "idear". Overall he's a cool teacher with a good personality that keeps class interesting, but don't expect an easy A.

Hale is a great teacher, he makes you work for your grade, but you actually learn... or I did. Some assignments are rough, like the paper and project, but it's worth it because he's awesome. Not to mention the subject material is interesting to begin with. Take this class in the afternoon so you can pay attention, you'll like it.

Dr. Hale receives a lot of unfair comments and criticisms simply because people are used to being spoon-fed in Ship. Yes, you do have to work in this class, but your grade will reflect how you did, it won't just be given to you based on if he likes you or not like some professors. Dr. Hale allows a retake of an exam which you can easily get a 100% on if you look over the material again. There are a lot of little assignments that aren't hard that will pad your grade if you just do them. Dr. Hale also won't tell you that you're right if you are wrong. If you give an answer that is incorrect he WILL correct you, he won't humor you. I won't lie, I was intimidated at first by him, but at the end I realized he is always there to answer questions and he is always willing to help. You will learn from this class and an A is nowhere near being unattainable.

I'm not going to lie, going into this class I was nervous I was doomed to fail. Some of the fools on here made it seem like Dr.Hale's class is impossible, well, I'm not gonna lie. It was tough, but I learned so much. No, really. I went to every class and came out learning something crazy about psych and the brain. He's a great prof and a great person. He gives extra credit, lets you retake a test, posts the tests online, lets you redo your poster if it sucks (worth 75 points) what more can you ask for? Stop all the bitching. SERIOUSLY. He's awesome. Best yet.

He is always there to talk about grades and things you don't understand. If you dont want to do work, don't take him but you'll def. learn a lot if you do.

Nobody in my class were psych majors and he knew it so we didn't have to learn all the stuff that psych majors do. That was a big plus. I was into it at first but as the course went along i pretty much got fed up with psychology. He gives you worksheets and as long as you write something on them you get 5/5. There was one critical thinking paper. Mine was a complete piece of shiat and i got 24/25. He took off one point for it only being 3 and a half pages and not exactly 4. But i probably should have gotten a zero. Half-assed work will get you by. He also gives plenty of chances for extra credit. I dont see why anyone might have a problem getting an A or B from Dr Hale. If you take him you will probably hear this line many times "If its one thing we know about humans is that we are social creatures". And hope you have him in a room where he knows how to control the lighting system.

This class is a good class to take. It not only stretches your ability to think critically, but challenges you to apply what you are learning to every day life. The tests are hard, but if you take good notes, watch the video clips, and study, you should be ok. Dr. Hale is also willing to work with you, so if you ever have a problem, just go to him.  See title. I get straight A's. ALWAYS. I got a C in this class. What is the independent variable? Could it be Dr. Hale's inefficient "teaching"? I'm taking the class with a new professor and he is teaching the same material Dr. Hale attempted to teach. I've aced every quiz. Don't take him. He is a waste of time, space, and educational resources.

I'm a psych major and as such, required to take Research Design I and II. Initially, I was excited about these courses, but within a few weeks of having Dr. Hale, my entire opinion of statistics changed, and not positively. Dr. Hale is a nice man and I am sure that he really means well. He's very accomplished, respectable, and highly intelligent. However, what he is not is an effective teacher. I really wanted to learn in this class and to be honest, I feel cheated out of an education while in this class. I come to class faithfully every day and I have never missed a homework assignment. I study outside of class as well and I try as hard as I can. I really put the effort forth, yet I still have a terrible grade in this class. It's like everything that I do, he can find problems with. He is overly strict about our Results papers; I understand he wants them to be professional, but as long as they convey the statistical information, why does it matter if the page number is in the right spot. Also, the thing that really makes it difficult is that he doesn't teach. There are powerpoints and the books, and I read both diligently, but when we are in class and he gives us in class assignments, he does so with little to no instruction and more often than not, the entire class is scrambling around trying to get it done on time and to his standards. I just wish he would spend some time lecturing, going over the material more, doing so more slowly, and not trying to cram things in. I just want the opportunity to learn and have someone TEACH me. Not force me to figure out everything on my own, fall on my face, and still have no idea what I am learning about. I could do all of that without a teacher...I'm very disappointed with this learning experience.

12 of 37 students found this review helpful.

Dr. Hale is an overall nice guy who tries to be funny and eccentric but vastly overdoes it. His classes are pretty much the same: him talking about subject material that SHOULD be easy (central tendency, variability, etc), but he makes it confusing. He relies solely on SPSS on the computer, which can only be used in FSC. Don't let the first test fool you, afterward they get ridiculously hard. The projects are due the next class after an exam. ONE bonus is that we didn't have a final exam, but other than that, the class is boring. He doesn't take attendance, which is nice, but if you don't attend class you miss out on a lot of classwork grades and 3-point quizzes, which add up quickly. I'd suggest avoiding him if at all possible, especially with RDBS1 because you'll have to take him again second semester for RDBS2.

Dr. Hale is an egotistical, bad dressing ass-hole who doesn't enjoy his job and you can tell. He is mad he chose this profession and he is making everyone else's decision more clear, so they don't choose the same profession. He doesn't know how to use a computer right, but he tries to teach us. Not good. He doesn't know how to do any math by hand at all. If you took away his beloved calculator and SPSS computer program, he wouldn't be able to get the sum of the z-score of a number even though we are given four formulas to do it. Instead, if we didn't have to computer do it for us, we got all our points taken off, even when we got the same answer as the people who had no skills at all, and let the computer do it for them. He is so ignorant. He has no common sense about anything outside of his classroom. Don't take him, take griffen instead. You will be thankful.

Dr. Hale lectures through the entire class. His exams are next to impossible, and he words the questions so that you are not sure what he is asking for. His quizes are online, and if you get disconnected he tells you 'sh*t happens'. The quiz won't allow you back in so you simply get a zero for the whole quiz. He gives extra credit, but it is only possible to get 9 points. 3 for community service, 3 for joining a S.U. organization, and 3 for volunteering for research. In the final grade, these 9 points are not enough to affect your grade. Avoid taking Hale if you want an "A", because it is next to impossible.

Dr hale knows his stuff and in that case he would be a good professor. But there is more to being a good professor than just knowing the subject. He grades pretty tough on tests and takes off points for stupid stuff on in-class assignments. A lot of his assignments are confusing and he doesnt do the greatest job explaining things and THEN when you ask a question he makes you feel so dumb. You will learn a lot in his class but I would not take him again.

Initially, Dr. Hale was intimidating and gave really long, dry lectures...while his assignments and exams remained difficult throughout the year (I swear that no manner of studying will change this!) he did develop a better personality and became more easy going. He grades all work very, very harshly and demands perfection (nothing less!) but near the end of the semester, he at least became more entertaining and I stopped experiencing the compulsion to hurl myself off a cliff rather than go to class. Maybe it is just that the subject is in itself boring, but Dr. Hale has at least begun to try to make it interesting. I'm starting to like the guy, in spite of the fact that I still despise his difficult and arduous class.

Let me start by saying that Dr. Hale is a nice man and from what I can tell, a brilliant psychologist. HOWEVER, just because someone is knowledgable DOES NOT mean that they will make a good teacher. Here's a good example of this. Dr. Hale knows his stuff and I admire him for that but he makes his classes much more difficult than they should be. Research Design 1 is PSY105. NOT PSY40000 so I feel that I should not be having a nervous breakdown every time I get an assignment in his class. He is very intimidating and won't go out of his way to help you out. I have asked him many questions about assignments and the feedback that I received was very unhelpful. When asked if he gave any credit for effort, his response was very disappointing. "I give credit for correct work..." Overall, he's a nice guy, not quite right for teaching, and I wouldn't take him again.

Dr. Hale is a very nice guy and he's always willing to help you when you need it. Your overall grade in the class is based on various homework assignments, in-class exercises (there are a lot of these), results pages (using SPSS), and 3 tests. The Results pages are very hard and he grades them very harsh. Attendance is key because there are a lot of in-class exercises assigned randomly, worth lots of points. If you miss them, you cannot make them up! The tests are half closed-book and half open book. The closed book section is very hard if you do not read the chapter! So, reading the book is very important. The open book section is all computations, but you never have to memorize formulas because it's open book. The open book section does require APA style, which is kind of hard if you're not familiar with it. The final exam has some questions from Tests 1 and 2 on it, and if your final exam grade was greater than your combined grade on tests 1 and 2, then he counts the final exam as both your test 1 and 2 grade (replacing your original grade) and the final exam. I never missed a class, did good on all the homework and in-class assignments, and did good on all the tests, but I lost a lot of points on the Results pages. All and all, Hale is a very nice guy, the class is interesting, but the Results pages are very hard.

The heading pretty much says it all. I have never met a Prof that just didn't give a damn about his students until I took this guys class. He was mean. His tests were impossible and you couldn't take notes from his boring lectures. At the beginning of the semester I had to go to Texas for my Grandfathers funeral. I E-mailed him to ask if I could turn in my assignment late. The answer was a blatant "NO." We also had these online quizzes we had to do that were really hard. I got kicked out of the damn things twice and because you can't get back in to the quiz once youre out I ended up with 2 zeros. Of course when I talked to him about it he was like sorry can't help yah. After all of this I was going to drop his class but thank God I changed my mind. I worked super hard did all the extra credit I could and studied my ass of for his impossible tests. Well, all of my work paid off I ended up getting an "A." He also had an amazing curve which helped A LOT. All in all I am really glad I stuck with the class. I really learned a lot and if I had to take the class again I probably would. If you have to take him WORK HARD! Otherwise take someone else. This was by far my hardest class but I still managed an "A." So like I said He is an EVIL man who taught an AWESOME class.

For how much I hated this class, it ended up being one of my higher grades this semester. He gives about 6-7 online quizzes a semester--which if you get a 7/10 or higher you get full credit on. As long as you have your book handy, you're fine. His exams are pretty ridiculous. I studied for hours on end and still only recieved a C on two of them. The 1 paper he requires is fairly easy, nothing to worry over. He does give a fair amount of extra credit, which helps out a lot. Dr. Hale seems to be there more for the research aspect of psych and not the teaching, which makes the class hard to grasp at times. I would recommend looking for a better prof, but if you have to take him it's not the end of the world.

I'm currently taking Prof. Hale for a summer online intro to Psych course. It beats taking the course for an entire semester, sitting through lectures, and all that. The quizzes are open-book (he obviously can't see what you're doing), but they're also timed and detailed so just know your stuff. There are assignments due almost every day. One thing that pisses me off is that he makes an assignment, and then emails you with adjustments/ specifications of exactly what he wants. He's sort of unprepared like that. Overall, this is a lot less work than what you would put in over the course of a "real" semester, and you can do it in your underwear, or naked, whatever works.

Dr. Hale is one of those highly intelligent, highly involved in the active end of the psych research field. Problem is, he tends to forget we arent all researchers yet, and the difficaulty of the class reflects that. Its a brand new field and always changes, and even the prof gets mixed up with new studies, making him seem a little over anxious. He just loves psychology and will make you see it in a biological sense. He does offer help in the form of study sessions and extra credit, in addition the class votes on if they have quizzes for each chapter.... vote for quizzes! They are easy if you read the chapter. The tests are rough, with some MC and killer essays. There is also a project presentation thats worth a test grade. This is not a class to be taken lightly. Attendance should be mandatory.

Dr. Hale is a really nice guy, and makes random funny comments like "...just keep it in feet and inches because we'er American's and don't give a damn about the rest of the world" but his classes are extremely boring. If you like sitting in a dark room and looking at slides for 50 minutes 3 times a week, and taking notes, i's day you hve the right class. he's a nice guy, and i'd choose him over others, but it's not a party in disquise.

Dr. Hale is an OK teacher. We do the same thing everyday. Take notes, watch a video clip, take notes and so on. It's boring, but yet you do get to learn a lot of interesting things. Tests are pretty hard so you have to study alot! Other than that his class is ok.
