Dr. Harris was a very effective professor. He always kept us updated on when the exams were and went into detail on all the notes. If you actually pay attention and listen it's pretty easy to get an A. It can get a little mundane when he lectures because everything he talks about is in the notes (which he emails to you). Just show up and listen. Also, he swears a lot and cracks jokes to make sure we're paying attention.

I really didnt like him at first, but after awhile I realized he's a genius and a very nice person. His class was really work-intensive. Usually about 100+ pages of reading per night and our first test took most of the class two class periods to complete (EXTENSIVE essays). The in-class discussions were pretty rough, but when I took him he had deleted his attendance policy and didn't make it mandatory, so I didnt go that much. I managed to do most of the reading for the beginning of the semester and got an A on the first test. After that, work from my other classes caught up to me and I wound up getting a D on the second test so I panicked and stupidly, I withdrew. I emailed with him a few times telling him it was nothing personal and that I had enjoyed the class, he told me he understood, blah blah, and hoped to see me in another class. I regret having dropped the class and if I had more time at Ship, would take another one with him.

Overall, Dr. Harris is an amazing man to have conversations with concerning literature. He always enjoys having open discussion and will get pissed off if he faces a bunch of mutes. If you read the books and participate, you should be fine. He is incredibly intelligent and during half of the lectures that I attended, I truly felt nervous to participate, and whenever I did, he did not make me feel incredibly stupid. In terms of papers, please make an effort to go see him during office hours. If I would have written my papers sooner and shown them to him, I probably would have done better in the class. If you feel you do not understand his commentary or why he tore apart your paper, see someone else in the English department or head to the Learning Center. If you cannot handle a course where it is an open discussion format and Dr. Harris' format of grading papers, then I would suggest Dr. Rich or Dr. Vernooy-Epp. If you would like to try a challenge, Harris is the person to take. You will love his effective style of teaching, and you will definitely feel challenged. I would not be surprised if most kids in my class decided to take him for an English 300 course next year because he does an awesome job.

Harris was a nice prof. We watched a lot of movies on the books we read and the books were actually interesting and enjoyable to read. Just so long as you read, you will do fine on the tests and quizzes. He may be a bit boring at times, but bear with him. He's a sweet guy and he knows what he's doing. Take Harris if you get the chance.

I can't believe there are people who don't like him. I took him this past August for Literature (finishing my gen-eds up). Anyway, the class consists of two tests, the first being multiple choice and essay which are no problem if you've read the books. The second is a short multiple choice final. You MUST read the books to pass. There are several unannounced pop quizzes throughout the class. You get to drop your lowest score, but that's it, so for godsakes read! There is also a short analytical paper which took me roughly three hours to do, and you get to choose from like 9-10 topics so it's not bad. The last thing is a very short research handout you put together that gives some historical/cultural background on the books you read. That took me about an hour to put together. The books themselves were not bad, they weren't all joys to read, but they weren't terrible. You also watch a lot of movies. The books/movies are/were controversial. For example, I never thought I'd see softcore gay sex projected onto a 50" projector screen in a classroom. LOL. But, there was nothing hard or objectionable to this class. He's fair too; in fact, he's more than fair. He hands out extra credit points like Halloween candy. Like I said, just keep up with the reading, and contribute when he calls on you and you'll be fine. I really recommend Harris to you.

Subject: He made College Writing Interesting!!!  (Jan 13 2005, 02:10PM)

Dr. Harris was by far my favorite professor last semester. He makes his class so interesting--like we don't write papers on boring stuff, it was always really controversial stuff that people actually felt like writing about. And he's a very gracious grader--the grammar quizzes we have couldn't be any easier as long as you know anything about the English language. He was always there for me in and outside of class--I was going through a rough time, and he gave me an extension, no questions asked. He brings humor into every class, even showing the Daily Show with Jon Stewart once or twice. The writings aren't easy, and you do have to work at them, but I managed to pull an "A" on every single one with some work. If you have to take college writing, he's the prof to take!

If you're afraid to actually put thought into a paper then don't take dr. harris. The man is brilliant and classes are always an open discussion format. Once you figure out how he grades papers, you are in the clear.

Okay, so you had journal entries that were due every day, but his tests and quizzes were really easy as long as you read the play. He grades tough on papers and journals, but you only have one paper due for the whole semester. I recommend him, although you just might have to put in a little effort.

This professor emphasizes in class discussion, as do a few English profs. He expects you to read certain books for college writing and as well read criticism on these books, which sometimes is a lot, but if you want to be informed and don't mind working hard it's fine. In American Writers I, he also assigns a good bit of reading, but it is always useful. He is very entertaining in class, and will help you if you just ask him. He does not require an exorbitant amount of writing for classes, so when you do writing for him you usually can find a good bit to say. He is a great guy and encourages students to achieve excellence. He gave me the confidence I needed to finally change my major to English from Psychology. I would recommend him to anyone who isn't afraid to read.

Dr. Harris is the nicest prof I've had so far at SHIP. He will really go out of his way to help you out and unlike some profs, truly cares about what you have to say. His classes do require a bit of work and heavy reading assignments, but he's an easy grader and honestly just a nice person to be around. If you get the chance, I reccomend taking him.

BUT i am glad that i stuck it out, i have learned so much. i'd highly recommend him to anyone!!!! i give him an A for effort and teaching ability!

Dr. harris was a very effective teacher for me. We had assignments due practically everyday, which was kind of a pain. I wanted to learn how to write, and Dr. Harris' class definitely taught me how to write more efffectively. he offers a few extra credit assignments, which aren' that bad at all. he'll help you out with any quesitons you may have or help you revise an essay, need it be. take this guy and i think you'll do well in writing.

DO NOT take this prof. if you don't have to! This is my senior year and this class made it a living hell! This class has no variety at all, you do the same thing each and every class! You read a book per class period, if not a book 100-200+ pages, then you come to class sit in a circle and 'talk' about the reading EVERY CLASS! He expects the class to talk and has this strict 'everyone must talk, or else' plan, but when you do talk he dismisses it like your comment doesn't matter! He might be a nice guy, and if you were only taking his class then it wouldn't be so bad, BUT with a full course load it's hell! Save yourself and DO NOT TAKE HIM!

This professor was the worst ever. He comes into class tells you the terms you need to know, goes over two or three questions on the story you just read and you watch a movie. He is a nice guy but a horrible teacher. DO NOT TAKE HIM. You will also have to write a half page single spaced journal entry for each class. He collects random ones at first to look at then he collects the whole class at once and he grades really tough. If you take him, good luck.

Yes Harris is willing to help you when you need it...and Yes he is a nice guy....but he expects your papers to be perfect. He does allow you to revise your papers after they have been graded by him, but its extremely disappionting when you spend 5 hours writing a 3pg paper only to receive a C if you're lucky....but usually you'll get an F for your first grade, then, after revising it just how he wants it, you can bring that F up to a C or B.....Its a time consuming process. The vocab. and grammar quizzes are easy and they help pull up your grade. Oh...and expect to see "HELLO KITTY" on everything he hands out....

maybe its just me but i didnt really car efor this guy. Class attendance is mandatory - i had this class 2x a week...a grammar quiz one day and a vocab test the other day without fail. Sure he is a nice guy and all but come on. U have to read TONS of retarded essays that u could care less about and write papers on them and arguements. From what i hear, other profs let u pick a topic u actually give a crap about. While harris is a decent prof his class is still boring and lots of effort is needed for a good grade.

Dr. Harris is really a very hard teacher. I was not nearly prepared for the amount of reading that we had nightly. It is about 100-200 pages an evening. He has quizzes about once every two weeks on the material covered. Most of these quizzes are known. You really have to read all the material or take really great notes in class. He grades hard on papers, but you usually do have an option to re-submit them. The exams are really difficult, even if you study. Overall though, he knows the material really well and will teach you probably more than any other English teacher. He's funny and enjoys open conversations in class. I would probably take him again, as long as I was prepared.

Dr. Harris is a pretty laid-back guy. Most classes were spent simply discussing what we were to have read for that day; sometimes we even got out early if no one had anything to say. He gives a few pop-quizzes, which are pretty easy. My only grudge against this guy is that his writing directions are vague and the final was ridiculous. For both the paper and the final we had to implement things that we NEVER discussed in class and that were not made clear in the book. So be prepared for that if you're taking Intro to Lit with him.

Harris will make you read a lot...then again it is a literature course. Every class you have to write a half page journal entry from your readings. He gives out pop quizes and grades heavily on class participation. There are 3 (50 multiple choice question) exams, one 4 page paper, and many pop/planned quizes. If you like to talk/write a lot and understand literature, Harris is the one for you. Otherwise, avoid him if at all possible.

Dr. Harris is an amazing prof. His class isn't like a regular Literature class where all you do is read. We read a couple plays and watch the movies. The only pain (even though they are only half a page) is doing the journal entries because you need quotes and to explain them. You are required to do one prior to every class. You are also required to do one paper and take 2 tests. The final counts as 30 percent :)

Harris is a really boring teacher. He repeats everything a million times and basically bashes the stories to death. On a positive note though, he is a really easy grader. He's always more than willing to let you make things up when you miss class (just have a decent excuse). Your grade will consist of quizes, tests, and journal entries. The journal takes a little time but the quizes and tests are really easy if you read what was assigned.
