This prof is so easy! All the people that said bad things about him are just nerds who think all college professors should be perfect and go by the book and don't want to learn outside the box. Yes, he is disorganized there is no question about that. But we have only had 2 papers so far this semester. They are only 2 page journal entries and if you follow the directions you'll be fine. I got an A+ on the first one. He doesn't teach out of the book which is awesome because I don't want to read it (you should split it with someone because you don't need it too much). The first test is questions right from the book's website quizzes aka you have all the answers! And there are 15 questions about what he talks about in class...that's it. There is also a group project, field trip and a small final. The guy is so laid back and very interesting. TAKE FOR AN EASY A AND A FEW LAUGHS.

Great laidback teacher. He made class interesting. We had two tests and he tells you what the test is on. There are a couple short papers to write. But you don't have to turn them in til the last day of class.

I have no complaints with Professor Hirshon. His assignments were given with reasonable time frames, graded fairly (reasonably good grammar and a thorough analysis will get you far), a fair attendance policy (you could miss up to 3 classes with no penalty, failed after 5 classes missed)... the quizzes were all manageable with reasonable notes on the in-class lectures and a skimming of the text- however, I was very unsatisfied with this class. Each form of art was skimmed, some more in depth than others (architecture got almost two weeks, music got one class period that I unfortunately missed). Hirshon himself is a nice guy, makes some jokes that are corny in an adorable sort of way, knows what he's talking about and takes a genuine interest in his students, but all things considered I was let down by how shallow the class was taught. I don't know if it's the professor or the course itself, but I was disappointed.

He's definitely unorganized and makes no excuses for it. Yes, he tells dirty jokes. Big deal. His assignments are confusing and he can grate on me every now and then... However, he's a very interesting person and has a lot to offer if you are open to it. You have to learn to "let go" in his class. To do this, realize that he doesn't have anything specific in mind. So when he tells you to analyze something...just write what you truly think! He'll love it, I promise. He hates grading and evaluating, so he's very generous when it comes to this. You will not have a nice and neat syllabus for the semester. You may not even know where you are in class on some days. And some classes, even, you may not talk about art much at all. But don't worry! You're grades won't reflect this. Just breathe, realize that this is an easy class without guided expectations, and take it as it is. You'll enjoy it so much more and your grades won't be bad, either!

I don't know why all these ppl left bad comments on dr. hirshon...His class is easy and he gets the point across...He does tend to dwell a little bit on certain pieces, but it helps in the long run. He tells funny stories in class to lighten the mood and will talk to you about any subject if it's important to you. This is the only class I actually look forward to. TAKE HIM!!

I love Dr. Hirshon! If you show up, pay attention, and think just a little about the work, you do great. He's a little disorganized, he doesn't follow the sylabus, but he's a really smart and funny person.

Dr. Hirshon changed my life. His class had a huge affect on how I view the world. He helps you learn how to get to the meaning of paintings by looking at specific elements. You aren't tested on this type of material. Every few class periods he will give you terms that you copy and then are tested on in a multiple choice format. If you get the pleasure of having Dr. Hirshon as your professor, listen to him, he really has some insightful things to say.

As a Chem major I was naturally fearful of any kind of art, and I found Dr. Hirshon's class to be one of my favorites at Ship. He is amusing, energetic, and extremely erudite, particularly about art. He is able to bring out the meaning, content, and purpose of various works of art even to someone as "unartistic" as I. His tests were easy, questions pulled DIRECTLY from the companion website. Participation is a must, and there is a group presentation at the end of the semester. The hardest part was the 'journal' - a series of short papers that students must write describing certain works of art and their reactions/interpretations. If you can do well on the journal, you can get a good grade...if not, so be it. An extremely interesting and fun class, Dr. Hirshon always welcomes jokes and irreverance, sometimes within the boundaries of good taste...other times not! If you are a thoughtful and outspoken student, this class will be a perfect fit!

I had Dr. Hirshon in Summer Term V 2001. I used to hate art and was afraid of it till I had this class. Dr. Hirshon makes art very easy to understand and observe by showing you plenty of slides and elaboration on them. The journals are an effective way to use the techniques you learned in class. I had to write 5 2-3 page journals on the pictures of your choice. The trip to Washington DC was the bomb as well. He tells lots of jokes and is an easy going guy to carry a convo with. The presentations at the end of the semester are awesome too and are fair game in what you do. The two tests we had were hard, but easy because he focused on what we needed to know. Great professor, great class, gurantee you will walk out of liking art!

I had Dr. Hirshon for Art Appreciation in Summer Term V of 2002. He made my outlook on art do a complete 180. His lecture is not boring if you are capable of appreciating art, if not, I suppose you would be doomed regardless of who you take. He grades rather difficult on the papers you turn in, not only on the content of the artwork your paper is on, but also very critical on the grammar and sentence structure. The reading is the only homework you will have except a few small papers 2-3 pages, double-spaced. The reading is interesting, but you can gain most of what you need to know from his lecture. I tried my absolute best in this class and could not quite pull an "A". If you're looking for someone easy, take someone else. If you want to learn, take Dr. Hirshon. He executes the goal of the class to spread the appreciation of art masterfully.

Dr. Hirshon recognizes that most students take this course because it is a required Gen Ed. He's the best teacher for it! He makes classes interesting and gives you a whole new outlook on art. I hated art before i Took his class and now I Definitely have a new appreciation for it. Best of all you don't have to be afraid to speak your mind. No Censorship!

I would not take him unless you are an art major because this class is more than just a gen. ed art class. This class requires much more work than needed to learn the basics about art. Also you dont get much feedback about your grades since you hand in everything at the end of the year. Take someone else if you can

I was an art minor...until I had him. Gave me such a negative impression of the ship art dept. that I changed my minor. Shows up late (if at all), never stays on track, doesn't do most of the assignments, picks favorites like crazy, and always shows off his own work...its ok, but really. Have some structure or teaching ability.

This man is a d*ck. He is boring as hell, loves art WAY too much, takes attendance, and picks favorites. His classes are so boring. He will discuss an art piece for weeks on end, and you will not even care. But he takes attendance, so you HAVE to go. At the end of the semester you will have a big project due. We literally had the best project in the class. You get 3 partners. I had my roomate, a girl who missed a month of class, and another girl. My roomate and both girls ended up with a B in the class. Me? I got a C+. I missed one class all semester, participated, but wasnt one of his "cool artsy students". Bam, C+ in the class. There were people that did WAY less than me in the class, and got a much better grade. This professor sucks. Worst teacher ive ever had in my life. DONT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!

Even though I got a good grade in this class I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It was extremely boring and we barely learned a thing about the actual history of the art, it was more of an analysis course. Maybe it's because I only took this as a gen ed, but it was terrible. He's extremely arrogant and makes the students feel like morons when they answer a question. He also never answered e-mail so don't even try. I did well in the class, but I swear he just grabs grades out of the air. I was bored out of my mind in this class, I should have just stayed in bed.

I am a bio major and have taken difficult classes such as chem bonding and dynamics and other difficult science classes and the worst grade of my college career came in art???? what?? you have no idea what is going on in class or with your grade. He doesn't hand anything you do back to you so you don't know how your doing. If you go to him and ask him he'll come up with some excuse like "i don't like to discuss grades" or "i don't have them done yet" so i would avoid MR. (not Dr.) hirshon if you like to know whats going on in class.

Dr. Hirshon is the biggest joke EVER!!! You have no idea what he is talking about unless you are an art major. He says the same thing over and over. Example: "The painting is what...rounded." He said what 38 times within an hour of class. I'd rather shoot myself in the foot, twice, then go to class. I'd aviod him at all cost!!!

Dr. Hirshon, if he is even worthy to be called that, is a joke. The class had no structure and he trys to explain to you how every painting in the world is beauitiful, when it looks like a 3rd grader did it. You do journal entries throughout the semester and he never hands them back so you have no clue what your grade is in the class until the semester is over with. I got an unpleasant surprise when i got my grades and i got a B-...i would not recommend him if you like to know what is going on in class.

Professor Hirshon is a nice guy. When he gives you bad news, he does it with a smile. When you fail a test he tells you not to worry. When you see him in the hall hes always genial and talkative. His tests are very hard and his projects are insane. The project we did changed as we went along because he was running out of time. After each presentation he would critique you in front of the class, which is bad because it's humiliating and good because the students going later have more knowledge of what he's looking for. He told us the students at the beginning get more slack because they have nothing to go off of. Sadly, art critiquing has a lot of opinion, but he relays his opinion more like fact. He explains that the four heads in the painting create an oval, but in reality it could be a triangle or a square or a star or a smiley face. Many times I found myself rolling my eyes when he tried to convey something in a painting that could be seen in a completely different light. He seems very new to basic technology, learning to use PowerPoint right in front of us. Professor Hirshon did expose us to a tremendous amount of artwork and you can feel it when you walk through the National Gallery. You recognize a lot of work from his class. This was his redeeming aspect. I felt the amount of work he exposed us to was consequential for me as an artist. He also did a great job in teaching us to recognize aspects of art in different time periods so one could differentiate Spanish baroque from Dutch, or rococo from renaissance.

I hope youre an art major if you take anything above art appreciation with him. His art appreciation class is one of the easiest in the dept. He will ramble, he will get off track, get used to it. Trust me, its better than some of the others that actually make you WORK. Dont take art history ANYTHING unless youre an art major. You will probably regret it once he starts going into terms that you don't have a clue about. Dont be afraid to ask questions, or make wacky/lude comments about paintings. If anything it will make him like you more. Stop bitching about the miss 4 classes and fail deal. Every single art major has that policy for ALL of their classes, so suck it up and go to class!

Dr. Hirshon is a very interesting man because you never know what he will come up with next! Overall, he was definitely able to help me appreciate art more and take a second look at it but he lacked in some other areas. For instance, I only ever got two grades back in his class. One being the first journal entry (there were five) and the second being our midterm. All other projects i never received any feedback. Plus, he waited until the last minute for us to do all of our projects which led to endless hours of stress right before the end of the semester. The one good thing out of this however, is that there is not really any homework. Make sure you don't buy the book, it's definitely not worth the $100 because you will use it about two times! Best of luck to all of you :-)
