Dr. Hoover comes off like a sarcastic as*hole when you first meet her. This continues even after you've gotten to know her a bit; in class and when you talk to her she'll make comments where you're not sure if she's being funny or if she's being mean, but I think that's just the high school teacher in her. By the end of the semester I realized she's just a smarta*s and won't take your crap if you're being stupid or lazy, which, let's face it, most college kids tend to be. That being said, she happily let me miss two weeks of class for my honeymoon in the beginning of the semester. She just busted my balls big-time when I slacked off a bit when I got back, so I had to prove to her that I actually cared about my grade. I did pretty horrible on all of her tests except for the final, because they're really hard. All of her other assignments aren't bad as long as you put in a little effort know how to write; Blackboard discussions, a couple of observations, a professional interview, and a lesson plan is all we had to do. All-in-all, she's a good prof who knows her stuff, despite being a bit scatterbrained at times. She doesn't let you slack, she makes sure you're actually learning the material, and does her best to effectively answer everyone's questions truthfully. I like her. Sorry to be so long-winded.

I am amazed to read the comments about Dr. Hoover being sarcastic. She was THE most kind, understanding professor I ever had. Her classes were organized, informative, and fun. The tests/projects/exams were varied and fair. She managed her responsibilities at work during the time of a major family crisis without any lapse in concern and consideration for her students. I use things learned in her class every day.

Dr. Hoover is a sharp and very articulate professor who is nothing short of a wonderful lady. This class should be required of all potential teachers; as I feel what I've learned from her is a must for beginning educators and should not be considered suggestive. She is an attractive lady who exhibits a genuine warmth for everyone in the class and is a pleasure to be around. Dr. Hoover is not a pushover and you will work in this class. She will equip you with the necessary tools to become a more confident, professional, and effective teacher. I must say this is actually a class I looked forward to attending. If you are going to be a teacher, I urge you very strongly to not hesitate in signing up for this class.

Dr. hoover may come off as a tough professor, but she can really be a nice person. I had her class last semester and still remember mostly everything from it. She barely lectures; most of the time you're actually involved in the class which helps you learn the material better. Take her if you actually want to learn something!

The first day of American School I thought it was going to be a LONG semester. Anyone else hear the "basically, I'm a bitch" speech?? However, by midterm and then the end of the semester, I realized that Dr. Hoover is one of the BEST professors/educators that I have ever encountered. Yes she uses sarcasm, but as young adults if you cannot handle a little sarcasm, you are definitely going to struggle in a classroom of teenagers!! Dr. Hoover is EXCELLENT! Now that I'm starting my Master's degree, I hope that I have more classes with her. It's been 7 years since I had Dr. Hoover in class, and she still remembers my name...that's impressive considering all the students she encounters.

Dr. Hoover was absolutely amazing! She changed the way she taught her class everyday and used skills that you'll actually use in a classroom. You NEVER want to miss her class. Shes easy to talk to and so helpful.

By far the best teacher I've encountered at ship. At first the class seems overwhelming and she seems strict, but it's not hard at all. GO TO CLASS! You need to for the grade. Class is fun and interesting so you'll want to be there anyway. If you do all the worksheets and go to class there's no reason you can't get an A

The first three or four weeks of class this lady scared me to death. She seems tough at nails and give the wrong answer and you will be red in the face. I was intimidated, no doubt. But boy, she is an amazing prof. The best I have had so far at Ship. She learns each one of our names and using classroom managment techniques that we can use in our own classroom some day. She doesn't grade too hard either, so it not hard to get an A at all. I realized that Dr. Hoover may not be as tough as she seems and is really good. Take her!

Dr. Hoover is a great prof but a very sarcastic person which makes her class miserable at times. You never know what her reaction is going to be to something- whether she's going to be exasperated at you for asking or compliment you for asking such a great question. However, the class is very easy and not much work is required. The 5 hours of observation write ups take a long time but are fairly easy. I would take her again I just with she would lose the attitude

Dr. Hoover is the best professor i have had yet at Ship. The first day she comes across kind of strict, but that is just to get her point across that she is in charge. Her class was fun and energetic and she made it a point to get to know every single one of her students names and made sure we knew everyones name also. There is only a midterm and a final and they are extremely easy. The things that she puts on the tests are the things that we have gone over again and again in class. She's always up for a good laugh and she makes you want to get up and go to class. I hope i get to take her again before i graduate and i would highly recommend her to anyone!!

I cannot believe what a terrific teacher Shippensburg hired. Dr. Hoover makes the class interesting and fun. You don't have to study for the midterm or final because we review over the information that it is easy to remember it. There is only a final and midterm in this course, along with a partner presentation. Dr. Hoover is a great asset to this University I am most certainly taking her again next semester. She will make sure you are a good teacher if she has you in her class.

She is a great professor and one of the best i have had so far here at ship! Just make sure you do the reading and the work she requires. She is fun to listen too and tells her own stories and applies them to the class which make it more enjoyable. I recommend her for any class!!!

Dr. Hoover is the best education professor in Shippensburg. Classroom management is actually challenging and you have to put a lot of time and effot into your work. Her lectures are so interesting and helpful.. and everyday the class is involved somehow. She makes you want to go to class and do a good job! Thank you Dr. Hoover you are a saint!!!

Dr. Hoover is absolutly wonderful. She is undoubtedly one of the best professors I've ever had (here at Ship or elsewhere) She is extremely intelligent and fun. She wants all of her students to do well. She has high expectations and hold you to them, but thats what makes you do well in her class. I learned more in this one class than in all my other semesters in education combined, and I would definitly take her again :)

Dr. Hoover is great! She's very much a constructivist teacher (You'll learn all about constructivism in her classes). You have to do the readings and go to class, but class is always fun. Dr. Hoover cracked me up & was always willing to help. Dr. Hoover loves what she does and makes sure that you're going to as well. Take her if you really want to be a teacher!

Firstly, she thinks she knows everything and has it 'all figured out,' so don't even bother playing devil's advocate with her. Just smile and pretend she's the best thing since Jesus--it's what she wants from you. When she chews you out for something ridiculous like not agreeing with her, thank her for showing you the error in your ways. Sorry people, but if you get stuck with her, the only way it's going to be tolerable is if you spend the entire semester kissing her ass. Coursework is very easy, so long as you write well. But it really isn't worth it. You aren't going to learn anything and I'm pretty sure this lady gets a high off of putting people down. So if you're up for a semester of emotional abuse and popping pills of Paxil, go for it. Otherwise, find a professor who will at least consider the fact that maybe they aren't the second offspring of God.

Subject: Dr. Hoover got an attitude!  (Mar 30 2005, 04:44PM)

I took her class last semester and she begins the semester by being a total bitch. Slowly towards the end of the semster she chills out a little. As for her explaining projects, never happened! If you would ask questions, she makes your feel stupid and incompetent. If I would ever e-mail her or leave her a message, it never came back to me quickly. As for her office hours, she is very hard to reach. Another thing she does that is totally rude is she is in her office and she shuts the door as to say "leave me alone." That is her exact attitude both professionally and personally! I would strongly recommend against taking her for any classes unless you like being treated like youre stupid and not important.

First of all, her class is pretty easy. Tests are remarkably civil and there isn’t too much to the out of class assignments, just do them, and make sure your grammar is first rate. However, I seriously do NOT recommend you take this professor. She has a very holier-than-thou attitude and loves to boast every single chance she gets. Additionally, she’s one of those people who prescribes to the mindset “my way or the highway.” Hoover is strongly opinionated about educational practicum and philosophy. Unfortunately, this doesn’t help you at all, especially if you make the mistake of disagreeing with her which earns you the honor of becoming one of her reformist projects. In education, there is no one right way to teach for godsakes! Finally, she is the most inconsiderate professor at this university. If you have a problem, do NOT expect her to do anything about it besides berate you for bothering her. She loves to talk down to people and if you back her into a corner during an argument she shoots back with the “I taught in a school district for 17 yrs...” ageist, counterattack routine, and you MUST go to class or she fails you and it was all just so stupid; you don’t learn hardly anything that will actually be used in the field. In a nutshell, her class is all about what is (what she thinks) is wrong with education and what education ought to be. But since that isn’t what education really is, the class is pretty much useless, unless you enjoy listening to negative rhetoric and your peers being talked to as though they are 5 years old. I say it again; take the class with somebody else, for your own sake.

Dr. H will come off as a very strict and (for lack of a better word) mean professor. However, she really tries to get her class to actually learn the information rather than just lecture-exam. She is awesome at changing up the flow of the class which makes it rather enjoyable. The only true downside is that I never know whether I can relax in class or not for fear of her making me look foolish. Also, know what she asks you to know. This is not the class to slack off in!!!! Other than that, I definitely learned more in this class than I have in my previous education courses.

Dr. Hoover is a very effective teacher, don't get me wrong. But sometimes she can be very sarcastic. I can't imagine her working with small children with such a bad attitude. But I did learn a lot from her and I would recommend her... just be prepared. It can be a little overwhelming and don't be afraid when she bites your head off!
