She taught the course on "coming of age" novels, so that made it good. I didn't necessarily like the lectures, and the tests could be a little tricky, but it wasn't bad. We had to do one group discussion, which was actually kind of fun. We watched some movies, read short stories, read 4 novels, and maybe watched some video clips. It was a good gen-ed class overall, and she's a very nice woman.

Ok, so grammar isn't everyone's favorite subject but you really learn a lot from Dr. Horner. Plus the work load is reasonable and she's really sweet. I'd highly recommend her.

Dr. Horner is such a sweet teacher...honest, fair and fun. Even though this class is not the easiest class...she makes it worth your time going. There at least 4-5 exams and you can chose btw/ a final paper or a final exam. The paper was so easy and it's also a grade booster. I definitely recommend Dr. Horner...as far as the class...don't take it if you don't need it...but she will teach you a lot of information that I cannot believe I still remember.

She was the first professor that I ever had here at Ship. I was worried about how huge of a switch this would be from high school to college. However, when she came in, she was so friendly I knew I would have a great time here. She is one of the nicest teachers here in my opinion. She grades kind of harshly, but overall she's a good teacher. I would recommend taking her.

Although the class itself was sometimes dull, the overall experience was an enjoyable one. Dr. Horner is extremely nice and is always around to help. If you put forth the effort, she will do the same in order to help you out. The papers are fun because for the most part you can take your own approach and pick the question that you like the best and run with it. The research paper was great because as long as it related to something you covered during the semester, you could write about whatever you wanted. All in all, it was a good class and I learned a lot of ways to edit and improve my writing.

Dr. Horner was great for this class. She starts off with the history of the English language and since she is a Medieval buff, she actually knows how to pronounce and spell in Old English. That helped a lot. Then when we went to the grammar section, she gave us plenty of practice with all the grammar and let us do it in class so if we had questions, she was right there. Also, she gaves us a retake on a test most of us did badly on. She is very understanding to how confusing grammar can be and it seems you either you get it or you don't. She put extra credit on the tests for just such occasions. We had two book reports to do on what she called "Pop grammar books", but she cut one out b/c we ran short on time. It was actually a nice distraction from the text and gave extra examples of grammar use and misuse. Overall, the teacher and the class were enjoyable and I would not object to taking Dr. Horner again.

Horner is actually a pretty good teacher. You read a lot of books during the semester, but the DLD's really help. She allows you to ask the other students questions about the book you're assigned to, and that was great, DLD days were the days you didn't really have to do the reading. Mini essays were easy, and towards the end of the year, there was a pop quiz on every book. you don't have to do all the reading and you'll still do okay in her class. Overall, good teacher.

She is a good teacher, but there is so much reading so if you don't like to read, don't take her for a prof. Other than the reading, her class is fun, and enjoyable, tests are easy and homework...what is that?

Dr. Horner is such a fun teacher! She really makes the classes interesting so you don't just sit there and stare into space because you're so bored all the time! She loves talking about stuff that college kids do (drinking, etc.) Whenever she says she'll be in her office, she's always there. For Intro. to Lit, she'll assign mini essays which are an easy 30% of your grade, and you don't even come to class on those days! For college writing, she assigns papers quite a bit (obviously) but she grades fairly. She allows extra office hours and peer evaluations before you hand in your paper so you can ask questions and get a better grade. You are required to go to class but she will often cancel class as an "individual work day" or give you an assignment to do on your own instead of going to class. Overall, she's an awesome teacher, DEF. take her!

Dr. Horner is so enthusiastic about teaching her subject that it makes you love attending class. The assignments in the class were about par with other survey classes, and she selected some interesting women writers that were enjoyable. You'll have a group presentation and three tests, which are surmountable because she gives you study guides that practically give her questions away. Not to say that she is too easy; she expects you to work a fair amount, but you will learn so much from her that it is completely worth it. Two papers that are simply close readings of a text and are not long, and she'll sometimes hint at possible topics in class. Dr. Horner knows how to get every type of student to participate, and it is obvious that she wants everyone to do well and that she cares. I absolutely loved this class, and was a bit confused why one student dropped it--it's the best survey I've taken, and I'm finished with my surveys. By the way, I don't know how many languages she knows, but it's at least three. Just do the work and participate in class and you'll have a great time.

She is a great college writing professor. You have to show up for most classes but classes usually involved group discussion on whatever essays we were supposed to read. 4 Papers and she would allow you to come to her office and get advice on how to make your paper better. My only gripe is that I went to her each time, fixed everything she said, and still ended with four B+ papers. Either I suck at writing or it's hard to get into the A's.

Dr Horner was a really great teacher and a good person as well!! She was always willing to help and asked you to attend 4 at the minimum of The S.I. sessions and you would receive credit and points for your overall grade. She has us write 3 papers and then one research paper. She had office hours and was willing to help anyone about anything your needed!! Classes were so fun, and there was no homework, just working on the essays, but no stupid busy work like a lotta other teachers- she was def. a teacher to remember!! Take her b/c you'll be guarenteed a great time!!

Dr. Horner is a great prof, maybe slightly boring, but understadning, tries to make boring things fun, and if you show up to her class and try, she will help you out. That's why I took her twice already. People who didn't get above a B in her class probably didn't go to class or didn't do the assignments, just do the work and go to class, you'll be fine.

Dr. Horner endeded up teaching one of the classes I didn't mind going to. There are only 4 papers and no midterm or final. She teaches class on an 7th grade level, I can't say I learned anything new, but she's a nice lady who cancelled a few classes and often let us out early on days we peer-edited each others papers. Also, there is more than enough time to get the work done. However, if you like to skip class, look elsewhere.

I took Brit writers with Dr. Horner, a pretty boring subject in my opinion to start with. She tried to make it tolerable. A lot of reading, but I got by without doing most of it. Make sure you study for the tests, though. 3 papers for the class, 1 long research paper and 2 short but annoying close reading papers. You have to analyze EVERY SINGLE WORD of about 20 lines of a poem, what a pain in the ass. Overall an ok class and a nice teacher.

I heard she was boring, but I thought "I've had boring before." I heard she couldn't teach, I heard all these things...but I didnt listen. Well, listen, she's not a good teacher, shes boring, and she doesnt know how to make her teaching better. It's a shame, at no time was I ever motivated to do an ounce of work in her class...maybe that was my fault...but it doesnt take away the fact that she sucked...if you have to take her, then just be warned, but if you dont, then stay away...take someone better....She's a nice person, but sucks at her job..unfortunately, her sucking at her job negatively effects you.

She keeps to herself a lot and I felt I never made a connection with her. I blew it with her by saying something off the cuff to her and, even after I apologized, I was still treated badly. As for the class, it was fairly boring, but she will embrace the subject with all of her heart. Mainly reading, supertough tests, and a group project. She acts like you should know things because of your level in college, and then belittles you if you don't. She wasn't availible much and even when I caught her after hours, she was like 'Well make it quick because I am off the clock'. I expected a little more out of her.

This lady is out to make some peoples lives hell and some people's heaven. If you miss class even once (even excused) you're done...don't even think about getting above a C! I passed all the tests and projects with flying colors and only missed class once and I got a C...when I went to confront her about the grade...she disappears until you no longer care. Avoid her if you can.

The good news is that the class is a breeze. She assigns a lot of reading which is supposed to be discussed in class. However, she talks the entire time so there is no point in wasting your time reading the book when she tells you all about it. The bad news is that she's boring and her teaching methods reminded me of high school. You have to sit in a circle and stare at each other trying to not fall asleep. I also noticed throughout the semester that she doesn't like people’s opinions when they differ from hers and when you disagree with her, her eye twitches which is so funny it almost makes the torture worth it. So if you're looking for a class that you can b.s. yourself through take this class... on the other hand you'll have to deal with a weirdo who doesn’t know if she’s teaching high school or college and you'll have to keep you opinions to yourself.[]

Nice lady. But I totally agree with the biased approach she has.... I got help from LAC Graduate English Students, my mom who was an english major, and the SI's. Highest grade (don't know my final) was 83. So I would say go to class unlike me. There is no reason to go to class but that "5% participation" is taken off the paper not the overall grade. 20 points off for sentence fragments?? I don't think so. I even took my paper to another professor and she said it would be a B+ A-, not a C+.

If your taking college writing with Dr. Horner just go to the SI sessions and class to hand in papers, and the class after that to get the next paper assignment. I will say though she does grade a little biased in my opinion. I got help from students, the LAC, even another teacher. Yet the best she can give those people and myself is a 81. She gives out a participation grade which is 5% of your final grade (showing up, SI sessions). But in my opinion she'll take it right off the paper. So if you want more than a B- i guess. Go to class. There's easier graders out there.

Overall, Horner is ok although she picks her favorites and definatly favors guys over girls. She also likes to pretend she has no idea what poems are about... it can be annoying. Tests are not hard as long as you complete assignments and ATTEND CLASS! Class attendence is very important (I learned the hard way). One group project and one short paper -- it's not a hard class - just attend and keep up with the work!
