I was so intimidated by this professor at first. She comes off very strict. She makes you take a math exam in pen! Also, she's very picky about attendance. She holds a strong accent too which makes it challenging to understand sometimes. Aside from being strict, it really does work. She doesn't fly through the material like most professors, she takes her time on each section, and makes an awesome effort for her students to actually understand what you are doing and how to interpret the material she is teaching. I would definitely recommend taking this professor for SCM 200.

If you do your homework, check the solutions to the homework, and read the main concepts in the book, then you should be golden. If you have a hard time understanding her, SIT UP FRONT! I did and there was plenty of space. With the easy extra credit, I ended up with over 100%. The people who critique her negatively are either lazy or flat out stupid, and should consider doing something else with their miserable selves. The upcoming business classes will only get more difficult and not because of whose teaching it.

Okay, so Hsu gets all these bad comments-she shouldn't because as long as you do your sh*t, she really is not that bad. I went to her office hours anytime I had a question, and she really praises that. Every time we took an exam, she would personally ask how I did and smiled (which didn't happen often, which made it really cute!). She is not hard to understand, and this really is information that you will use in your future career, so pay attention! She really is awesome as long as you do what she asks. Give her a break! I would take her again.

Subject: Good, but often misunderstood  (Jan 19 2007, 02:31PM)

Dr. Hsu is a really great professor, and often misunderstood. Many of the reviews of Dr. Hsu are amazing to me... many people feel that she has horrible English, is scary, does not care about the students, and teaches poorly. However, such is the great fabrication of lazy students. Math is not my area of expertise, and I had not encountered statistics since an 11th grade class, which I struggled with. I did terrible on my first test, managing to get a 74% after studying for several hours, off and on, during the week prior. By the time the second test came around, the items that we covered in class started to make more sense, and I managed to get an A for the course. The final was the easiest exam we had. Although many professors will test on things which they do not specifically cover in class, Dr. Hsu only tested us on the EXACT items she covered in class. Homework problems are optional, however, one will receive extra credit for these problems. These problems are also very similar to those which Dr. Hsu uses on the test. Before each test, Dr. Hsu would make up an extra-credit work sheet that was similar to the test. She even offered to check the answers and explain them, if someone cared to email her their solutions over the weekend. Only two or three students cared to do this. Dr. Hsu was also always available at office hours. Every time that I stopped by to see her, I would spend about 5 or 10 minutes asking my question about a specific problem and (after understanding the problem), Dr. Hsu and I would talk about other things. She was always more than willing to converse about her hometown, her transition to Shippensburg, my other classes, etc. She is a very friendly woman, and generous with her grading and class. If one does poorly, it is their choice, for as one may know, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. She provides opportunities for students, but many just fail to take them.

I feel she is a very fair and generous, instructor. I really appreciated her giving us the chance to earn extra credit by doing the homework, basing the tests on that homework, and making 5 tests (instead of just 3 or 4) and gave the student every chance to get partial credit. Most instructors would not structure the tests so much in favor of the students, especially if they had numerous sections of the class, as she did. Her manner is very direct, even abrupt. She hates small talk and is very impatient. When she asks a question in class and looks right at you, it is a good idea to call out the answer. She scared the hell out of me the first day, but everything turned out fine. -curvecraver

So I got stuck scheduling this class and after reading some of the comments on this website I was scared sh*tless about this class. However, I found out that it's really not that bad. If you do the homework that she gives you, you will do well in the class. The tests are very similar. Also, everytime that I asked her for help with something she was more than willing to give it to me. She doesn't mind at all if you come and get a little bit of help during her office hours. So, this class was really not bad at all and the extra credit on the homework made the difference between an A and a B for me. The couple of points on each of the assignments do add up. Hsu is a nice lady, she just wants you to do some work.

Dr. Hsu's class was one of the most challenging classes that i have taken but don't let that discourage you. As long as you go to class, do the homework, and pay attention you should have no problem. Her test questions come right from the homework she assigns and goes over in class. She does get a little pissed off when you ask questions in class and she may not answer them but if you go to her office she is always willing to help.

All you have to do to get an A or B in the classis try. Do your homework every day. the test questions are the homework questions that she had gone over. Most of the test questions match the homework word for word, and those that don't are only different because she changed a 4.67 to a 5 to make the question easier. The tests are lengthy though so you need to know what you are doing. She does provide a tutor though so if you start getting lost, visit the tutor. If that doesn't help go see Hsu, with proof that you have at least attempted it. Also she will occasionally collect one or two problems of homework for extra credit. typicaly there is between 15 and 20 extra points added to your exam grade a semester.

Hsu is not that bad of a teacher. I know the other comments on this page disagree..but if you do your homework you'll get A's on the tests. She is hard to understand the first week, but sit up front to hear her well. She is kind of mean when she answers questions, but she does answer them...also, her tests are made up of the exact same homework problems that she goes over in class...which makes them easy. She gives extra credit for some collected homeworks, plus points for EASY excel assignments....i say take her!

Dr. Hsu will give you a great understanding of statistics that will benefit you in your future DSI and Finance classes. You have to put in the effort. Tests are exact replicas of homeworks. Dont show up at her office the week of a test, but go as soon as you have a question, she will be more willing to help.

Although this professor doesn't look intimidating from the start, you're in for a rude awakening. She will inform you that most students do well in her classes at the beginning of the semester but after the first test I don't see how she continues to say that every year. More than half of her students out of all her classes received a C or lower. She will then tell you after the first test that you need help and that other students are doing well. She doesn't consider that it could be partially her fault, because she just reads off of powerpoints, usually skipping a few slides, and then shows some vague example and expects you to do the homework later that night. Basically you need to teach yourself.

I would not recommend her. She is very tough. Very strict on attendance. She is tough to understand but you can get the majority of what she says. The problem is, how she talks in class is very basic compared to what is on the exams. Makes you take exams in pen and stay the entire time no matter if you are finished or not. There is a lot of homework. Normally four assignments a week which I don't mind but there is no schedule to it so it is hard to remember when things are due. She doesn't curve and I'm not sure what some of these reviews are talking about extra credit because she made it very clear that she doesn't give extra credit. She's very firm on "you get what you get". She doesn't feel that she should have to curve because we don't know the material, when in reality we don't know the material because she isn't a very good teacher. It really bugs me too that a lot of times she would give homework assignments and make them due on days the school was closed like on holidays. She had an assignment due on the Sunday of Fall break (Sat, Sun, Mon., Tues.) which no one knew about. That's a big peeve of mine when teachers assign things on BREAKS. That is the whole point of a BREAK. She also does make students feel very dumb when they ask questions in class, and she doesn't really provide an answer anyway.

This is by far the WORST professor at Ship. Basically, she reads off powerpoints which she doesn't make on her own and then assigns homework problems that are not anything like what is shown in class. She barely speaks english, but she sure knows how to yell at students and degrade them in front of the ENTIRE class. She makes you feel stupid and tells you that you are never going to get anywhere in life. She is never around for help. And if you ask questions she is not happy to answer them. She told the class on the first day that she will not reply to emails if she feels they are stupid. And she feels like you are stupid so dont ever expect a reply from her. Do not waste your time or money on this lady. Its not worth it. Oh and she never goes over the homework, so you never know if you are doing the problems right. So good luck, but do not take her if possible!

Ok, It's kinda my fault I waited for summer schedule adjustment to schedule instead of doing it in the spring (lesson learned) so I went into taking her Statistical Apps. in Business class with a positive outlook. Yes I read the reviews but with no other classes available thought "how bad could she be..."
Well, the first classes went decently well. I was impressed by her fairness and the classes had a good pace. She was a little hard to understand but I figured out what she was saying well enough. In all, I felt she was a really good prof. and was even letting the thought of writing a positive review of her when the semester ends get into my head.
Fast forward to Monday the 14th. I have an allergy problem and given that our school has no tissue boxes and I don't want to be rude and blow my nose in class, I elect to leave the room to go to the bathroom. I left the room only twice with a good chunk of time between the first leave and the second. I was engaged and took notes in class the entire time I was in the room. Every time I saw her in class that class, everything seemed fine. Apparently though it wasn't-As we were leaving a number of classmates alerted me to the fact that she decided to override me signing in for class that day and marking me absent instead. I was shocked that she would do this but even more shocked at the response she gave them when they questioned her decision-"harump" or something similar, basically she didn't give a sh*t.
What made me angry the most was the fact that she gave use a speech on honesty and "lying", yet that's what she apparently planned to do to me until my classmates let me know the real story. I don't feel that I can trust her, and that's the saddest part. I cannot recommend her at ALL. Avoid at all costs. I plan to withdraw from the course.

Before I took this class, I read the comments on here about her but I decided that I would be fine if I try my best. WRONG. I withdrew from this class because I would have failed. Yes, the test questions may come from the homework but the amount of homework she gives is over the top. I will admit that I am bad at math but even going to the tutor twice a week and spending hours trying by myself, I just could not manage this class while keeping my other grades up as well. Sometimes she seemed like she didn't like when people asked questions, and she was a little hard to understand. If you're bad at math like me, try another prof first.

As stated earlier she is very fair, and I will not pretend that she wasn't. The fact of the matter is she is hard to understand, bad hand writing, and she isnt miserable, but seems annoyed by anything and everything. She makes it so you want to avoid direct confrontation. That includes any questions you may have because she acts like you're an idiot. Anyway like I said very fair, but why put yourself through it. I took her after reading the comments. I tried to go in with a positive outlook. The reason I took her is because she was the only one left hmmmm.... I wonder why. I ended up withdrawing. So I should have just taken the advice on this site and waited until I could take it with someone else.

I knew coming into this class it was going to be tough. If you're the kinda person who enjoys teaching yourself by reading the text book then this is the class for you! If you've had stat recently in high school it wont be a tough class because the material is relatively easy you just have to teach yourself and do a lot of memorization. Don't drop the class if you fail the first exam. The final replaces your lowest grade and the second exam was easier than the first.

To start off, she is very fair, I will give her that, but after getting a 57 on my first test, I asked her how to study for her exams and she told me "you must complete every problem in each chapter without looking at your book"... I then asked her about extra credit... "If I give it to you, then I would have to give it to everybody" which ended up being once... I was absent a total of 2 classes and one of which I was in surgery and my excuse was directly from the doctor and she was convinced that I had forged the letterhead excuse, so after I showed her the scars, she said " I will except this only this time" All in all there has to be a better Stats prof... so look at her ratings before adding your class!

Mean and nasty, that is what she is all about. She spends about ten minutes each class letting you know how little she thinks of students. She treats you more like prisoners than college students. I went to see her in her office and she called me a liar because my printer actually broke. I came in hours before class because I didn't know where to go to print my homework. She then went on to tell me because I came in she would not give me credit for it.

Dr. Hsu is a very angry little woman, and she doesn't speak very good English. In class, she lectures, and if she gets mad, she repeats her frustration to you over, and over, and over again. She assigns hw every night, but this is good because it helps you learn the material better, don't be discouraged when she assigns 1 million problems to you though, it's only extra credit. Besides exams, she may give you a semester long project, it sucks, but if you do it, it's easy points. Her exams are straight from the hw, so that's another reason to do your hw. If you need help from her, don't freak out when she treats you like crap, just take it, she'll eventually give you the answers. Anyways, if you can, I would avoid taking her, but if you're forced to, you should be fine.

In class and during office hours she was basically always in a bad mood and acted like she hated her students. Outside of class I would see her attempting to smile and be charming, so maybe she is trying to change. I am not the smartest person but I did not think her tests were that hard. All you have to do is do the homework. I basically waited until the week of the test to start looking over notes and teaching myself the lessons using the answer book and i did alright. She gives extra credit if you have the homework done. The final is cumulative too which sucks. I didnt think she was a good teacher, sometimes its hard to understand what she is saying, and it seems like she hates giving help. She also hates apple pie, FORD, hot dogs and hamburger, and baseball.

On the third day of class, she started yelling at us about how if we didn't do well, it would be our fault. Half the class left before the withdrawal period, I wish I had. I got an A on the first test, because I had the time to learn everything for myself on my own time. She really doesn't teach the stuff she is supposed to, is hard to hear or understand, and kept me off the deans list. Don't take her. Oh, the course was supposed to be taken so that we could learn how to use computers in relation to statistics... Well, we only were allowed to touch the computers about 5 classes or so. Seriously, don't take her, just wait and find someone else. If you are needing to take the class so you can get ahead in your major or to fulfill the core requirement, don't take it if she is the only choice. Just wait and take some Gen-eds, and get someone else.

This professor is one of the worst teachers in shippensburg. She does not tell you the homework you missed and when you ask about problems you need to know, just about the whole problem for her is to even give you a response. Ridiculous class. HORRIBLE

take Neidigh if possible, but dont take Staff, b/c then who knows who you might get as a Prof. her tests come right from the homework, do all your homework and study. goto the tutor if you need help. there seems to not be enough time to finish her tests. she will not curve your grade at all, maybe for 1 test.

Dr. Hsu is hands down the worst professor in the college of business. I would not advise anyone to take her, her class was rediculously hard, her tests were long and nearly impossible to finish in the given time, and feedback on the tests was worthless. Don't take her!

SHE IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. Everything a teacher shouldn't be is her. I mean she can't speak hardly any english and when she does speak the little she knows its prolly when shes bitchin. You can't go to her for help, she just tells you that it is in the book, and basically looks at you like you are stupid. Her office times are at like 7 in the morn so she is never available, and frankly she doesnt care about the students at all. This school puts you in a tough situation because it is a required class, and she is the only teacher that teaches it, unless you can get staff (which is hard). Just say NO

Overall, the class is kind of easy. If you do the homework (which is only collected for bonus points), then you should know how to do the test as most of the test questions come directly from the homework. Problem is that she doesn't really review the homework. Also, don't try to ask any questions as she basically yells at people who do. If the class does bad on a test she'll spend an entire period telling you how its not her fault. I would try to avoid her, if at all possible but you could do a lot worse.

She doesnt teach, and her tests are long and hard. She doesnt like to help, and she is hard to understand. If you have taken stats before this wont be bad, but if you havent, watch out. Only plus is bonus points for homework and such.

She is the crazyiest goat eyed woman I've ever met. She doesn't teach she just mumbles her dialect of english with nothing important coming out of her mouth. The people who rate her good, are the people who she likes in class which is like 2 or no one and kisses her ass all day.

This woman is terrible, she is so mean to everyone and speaks very softly. She goes ridiculously fast and assigns a million problems. Her tests have way too much info in them for the time that you have to take them. DO NOT TAKE HER EVER EVER EVER!!!

I'm usually good at math and can handle bad teachers but she is HORRIBLE. She doesnt teach well and makes you feel stupid for asking questions. About 1/3 of my class dropped it. Stay away from her at all costs. By far worst prof I have had up here.

She's a very scary woman who likes to go on tangents about growing up in China. She assumed everyone's parents are paying for college and that each student has it very easy. The class itself could be confusing, but if you keep up with the homework and turn it in, she provides a lot of extra credit. The tests can be very confusing, and you can't use a calculator. The final is cumulative, but it actually wasn't too bad. For the whole class, you can miss 3 without penalty. Overall, I'd avoid her if possible, but it is manageable.
