I had Dr. Hurd for Principles of Biology I and really enjoyed his class. His tests were fairly easy (all multiple choice) and he kept you pretty interested. I figured when I decided to take him for Ecology, the class would be just as good/easy. ...Yea, that was a misconception. Ecology isn't necessarily hard, but his tests aren't multiple choice like they were in Principles. They're a mix of different formats (essays, matching, T/F, multiple choice, problems) and unless you studied the material pretty well, it'll be hard. There's only 2 exams and a final to worry about when it comes to that, though. The main points of your grade come from lab reports. I think there are about 6 total. Most of them are pretty easy and straightforward but the stream analysis lab is the biggest grade you have for the class and it's very time consuming to write up/do the calculations for. My lab report for that was 10 pages long. So be prepared to spend some time on labs. Lab periods themselves were actually kinda fun (the people in my lab made it that way). Pretty much every other week is a field trip to somewhere (so be prepared to be in lab for the full 3 hours some days). The lectures themselves literally put you to sleep. Half of the time Dr. Hurd goes off on tangents about stuff or just talks about graphs that you can't even take notes off of. Going to lectures is pretty important though because what notes you do get aren't available on Blackboard so you'll want to go to make sure you have them. Overall, just study for the tests and spend the time needed on the lab reports and the class should be a pretty easy A or B.

I would have to say that Professor Hurd has been my favorite professor so far, hands down. He's just a sincere guy and just so nice and willing to help. He even went out of his way to let me take a lab practical early because I had two other tests the same day. He's so passionate about his classes and gets really into the material. He tries to relate it to everyone's majors to make sure he's keeping people interested, too. His tests are difficult and you do have to study for them but they are definitely not impossible if you've prepared yourself. I'd definitely recommend him for any class you can get him for. I'm definitely taking him again if he's a choice!

Dr. Hurd is such a great guy. He was always very passionate about what he teaches. His classes were kind of on the boring side because all he does is lecture, but his notes are very comprehensive and easy to follow. His tests were a little more on the difficult side (there are 3) even though they are all multiple choice. The final was worth 200 points and was half comprehensive. Dr. Hurd was always available for help when you need it, and he is willing to help you too. The lab is kind of boring that goes along with this class, and the lab practicals are difficult. I dont think this was because of Dr. Hurd, but just the fact that we had to cover so much material for the class. Overall, I would highly recommend Dr. Hurd as a teacher if you have to take Principles I.

He is the sweetest teacher. He encourages help if you need it and will answer any questions at any time. He never gets mad at anything and he makes jokes without trying to, and people laugh and he laughs with you. You can tell he loves his job!

Heres what you need to know.
-3 lecture exams=300 pnts (each 100)
-final(half comprehensive)=200pnts
-2 lab practicals(75pnt each)=150pnts
-assignments and quizzes(lowest score dropped)=100
-lab notebook=100
-2 lab write ups(25& 50)=75 pnts
total=925 pnts
-Does not take attendance
-power point lectures (not posted on blackboard)
-If everyone gets a question wrong on a test he will usually throw it out unless he went over the material a lot.
Dr. Hurd is a very passionate teacher who really cares about what he teaches. He takes an ecological approach to most of the material, since that is what interests him and is what he teaches. Tries to make the class interesting for everyone by realizing there are many diff. majors...tries to make things in terms of why its important.
Goes through slides fast so develop shorthand or you will fall behind. If you don't take notes well you might have trouble.
Tests are difficult so make sure you study. Reading the chapters before class will help you understand the material A LOT better. You WILL have to work for an A, but that is the case w/ any prin. bio class.
The lab notebook and quizzes and assignments are basically grade boosters. More of a did you do it grade.
Very willing to help out when you see him in office hours and always responds to emails. Very friendly and approachable. Even offered to take any student interested to take a private tour in the greenhouse during the plant chapters.
Brings interesting and sometimes funny stories about his family here and there when he's waiting for people to catch up on taking notes off the powerpoints.
Overall Dr. Hurd is very willing to help and really cares about the subjects, and students he teaches. He is always available to help if you go to him. Likes to know his students one on one if you put forth the effort to get to know him. In the very first class he offers everyone to see him in office hours to get to know everyone.

I highly recommend this class and Dr. Hurd. His passion for the environmentis obvious and very contagious. The topic is extremely relevant to everyday life, and he makes it very interesting. He is respectful of those who aren't science majors, and tries to keep it light. I feel he cares about his students and really wants to share this vital information. 1 oral group presentation is the only unusual requirement. Take this class! It fufills a general education requirement as well.

Prof. Hurd was a great teacher. His notes are very clear and well organized. There is a lot of information in this class, but he tries to make things as easy to understand as possible. He's very helpful, and at the end of the semester, he does his best to offer his students a chance to pass. Overall, the course is tough, but due to prof hurd's teaching, its not nearly as hard as it could be.

I have never been a big biology buff but this class is sooooo ridiculously easy. He teaches it like all gen-eds should be taught. He realizes this isn't our major field and assigns work accordingly. If you study the notes for the exams-you should do fine. Paying attention in class is quasi-important but the homework assignments, presentations, and extra credit are what really makes this class nice.He also is easy going about missing classes, as long as you let him know and make up assignments. Its all just too easy! His lectures are well organized powerpoint presentations and he stays well within the hour and 15 minutes. Hes really passionate about what he teaches and I enjoyed this class immensely.

Dr. Hurd is a fantastic professor. His class is very straightforward: he lectures using powerpoint notes and he makes the test pretty much directly from the notes. some people seem to have trouble with this, my adivce: if you can't listen and write at the same time... just write, you should be good to go. He also understands that Principles 1 is a class for both Bio majors (of all different bio concentrations) and non-majors and makes a concerted effort to accomodate for everyone's interests, something that isn't very easy to do. his tests are moderately difficult, but if the whole class gets a question wrong, he'll just add a point to everyone's tests. he's nice in the lab as well. we had two written lab reports due for the entire semester and for the lab practical exams, he doesnt grill you on the spelling like other professors do. i suggest him very highly

Wow, this was the hardest class I've ever taken in my whole life, and yet I didn't hate it. The only reason I didn't hate it was because Dr. Hurd was so passionate about biology and the stuff he taught. There were ton's of notes, 3 tests, 3 lab practicals, and the final. The exams were multiple choice and somewhat tricky, the labs were interesting but the material covered in both lecture and lab was just too vast. If it hadn't been for Dr. Hurd I would have died. If you have to take biology, and aren't science-inclined, definitely take Dr. Hurd cause he'll make it a little better.

Professor Hurd is an excellent teacher. He doesn't give homework and is more worried about you getting something out of the course than trying to overload you with tests and quizzes. We had 4 exams including the final and he usually adds extra credit questions onto the end of them. Overall he's a great prof.

Dr. Hurd is unlike any environmentalist I've ever met...he DOES NOT preach about environmentalism or try to shove his views down your throat. On the contrary, he is an avid fisherman and hunter, which I feel makes him a great environmental thinker- he sees things from the majority point of view and not just as a radical scientist. His concerns are real and so is he...plus the class was very interesting and fairly simple! If you need to knock out a gen ed credit Dr. Hurd is perfect!

Dr. Hurd is kinda weird. When you go to ask him a question, he answers any question you could ever think about asking except the one you asked him!! He is a really nice guy though and curved tests based on how the class did. He also offered extra credit and the Lab notebooks at the end really boost your grade. He was a really good guy and i would reccommend him to anyone taking Biology courses.

This class was tough at first. He was teaching it to us like we were Biology majors and not as a gen. ed. class. As he figured this out he made the class and test easier and I ended up with a B. There isn't to much work. I would take him again if I had to.
