I loved Lacy!! His class is tough and thats why he is too. For some reason he reminds me of a drill sergeant. His way of teaching is the only way of actually getting the material into your head..If you see him during office hours, hes all smiles and laughter..(or maybe it was just me who made him laugh)..but I HIGHLY suggest anyone taking chem to add him as your prof..i had a tough time with it bur I ended up getting a B and its mostly because of his way of teaching ^^

12 of 37 students found this review helpful.

It is this simple. If you want to learn chemistry from the most brilliant professor the university has to offer, take the class. But if you care at all about your grades, don't. Bonding isn't that bad, and a select few young attractive girls may receive an A, but if you go any further than bonding, your GPA will take a hit. Heís not so bad in lab and really a great professor to take over the summer. If you have to, do take him over the summer since he is in a better mood then. But the honest truth is that you will work your butt off every day for hours just to receive 1 pity point (2 if you are a girl) on everything you turn in. The exams arenít that bad until you get to the final which will hit you like a brick in the face. If you want to learn chemistry, he is the professor to go to. But be aware that it is going to be stressful and painful, quite possibly the worst 15 weeks of your life. Absolutely do not think to yourself, ďIt canít really be as bad as everyone says it is. Iíve never gotten anything lower than an A- in my entire life, and that was in gym class. Iím sure Iíll do fine.Ē You are not special. You will not do fine. Everyone suffers, but you will learn.

Dr. Lacy was no doubt the hardest professor I have ever experienced. He came in the first day, wrote his name on the board and walked out. I was so intimidated. I, however, realized that although he is very difficult, Dr. Lacy does want you to succeed. He gives you an opportunity to study and get extra credit at the same time. A half letter grade is awarded to the persons in the class that do the additional problems. I suggest doing them to study for him exams, for they aren't for the weak-hearted. His exams are all 50 points, and there are 4 in the course. The 5th is then the final, which I really do warn to learn everything. I spent 8 hours on nothing but chemistry the day before and still had no idea what was going on. He's hard, but let's not kid ourselves. We're college students and we should be challenged like we will be in the workforce. If you work hard and do the work, you can pass this class.

First off, chemistry courses at Shippensburg are hard no matter who you take. Period. Secondly, Dr. Lacy is very approachable and friendly and will always help you in office hours.SO GO. The biggest mistake you can make is to be confused and not get help. GO, and go EARLY. If he sees you're making an effort he will be more flexible. Yes, he is intimidating but don't let that discourage you. After all he is human and has bad days just like everyone else, don't let it get to you. You need to attend ALL classes. There is frequent homework to hand in and in class assignments that are given. READ AHEAD. The class assignments are sometimes given on material that wasn't lectured on yet. If you read it and don't get it, GET HELP. Either a tutor or his office hours. Yes this course will be challenging, but if you put the effort in its doable. Plus, if you're a chem major you have to take Dr. Lacy for P chem because he's the only option. So getting to know him and his style of teaching early is a good thing.

Ok, so there was that one day he started cursing at us when we got to lab and hadn't even done anything wrong (yet). That's just Lacy. He wants you to respect him and he wants to work hard and LEARN something, not just get a grade. He isn't that bad in lab, he's always willing to help you as long as you aren't acting like an idiot or talking when he's talking and not listening. He is surprisingly approachable in his office and I think a big mistake you can make is not going to his office hours if you are having trouble. Ask for help!!! He will GLADLY help you!! Just, whatever you do, DON'T get on his bad side. Be respectful and try your absolute best and you'll be ok.

To succeed in Lacy's class you must be willing to attend all classes and WORK! He takes off points for incomplete homework, even if it is only one problem. Homework is given after every class and quizzes are every friday. He gives 3 exams plus a final...and all are extremely challenging- you must study. Overall, you will learn A LOT from him, but you will definitely work for it. He's also pretty willing to help so go to his office hours.

Follow this to succeed in Lacy's class: 1. Go to every class and PARTICIPATE 2. If you need help, go to his office hours. If you can't make those, set up an appointment. Work around him, not yourself. 3. Show him that you care about your grade. He is the kind of person where you need to give respect to get any respect back. 4. Ask him questions, he's more than willing to answer them. 5. His tests and quizzes are HARD, VERY, VERY HARD. You will have a tough time getting good grades on them. BUT DON'T GIVE UP!!!! He gives extra credit, and showing him that you won't give up will only help you in the long run. 6. Do all of the HW problems, and the additionals, these are the extra credit points that will help out a lot. 7. Do Not Talk In His Class, I cannot stress that enough. 8. Go to the help sessions that he holds during the week, but come with questions! He doesn't lecture during them, so if you don't ask questions he'll leave. 9. He is intimidating, don't let that stop you from doing well. Follow this and you can do well in his class. Just surviving his class is an accomplishment. Doing so will prepare you for anything! You will be able to take on anything after having him in class.

Dr. Lacy taught one valuable lesson, the harder that you work the more you will succeed in life. I found that a quick 15 minute study session prior to the class will enable you to participate in class and have a solid grasp of the information. He is always available and very friendly. Reading comments I find that some people are very sensitive and need to realize it is College, not Preschool.

Dr. Lacy. Where should i start? Very effective, I learned a massive pile of material, and learned it well. Its highly stressful very difficult work with no encouragement from anyone but yourself and your classmates. It makes people drop out, change majors, even change universities. Ive seen and heard it all. But by the time youre done, youll be so tough you can eat rocks and crap nails. This class was the hardest thing ive ever done in my life, but now that i'm through it everything seems worth the struggle. I was putting in a solid 60, yes 60 hours every week from the second week to the week before finals, just for homework from physical chemistry. Not to mention the 15 hours of classes and whatever measly homework i got from those. As a chemistry major/minor, its not that you have a choice of who to take for physical chemistry, but if you really want to learn things hardcore, Dr. Lacy is your man. He knows the material inside and out. My criticisms, as i expressed to him, were his distance from the students, his sometimes volatile temper, and his somewhat harsh grading scale. Physical Chemistry 1 is the class that really puts a chemistry major to the test, and if you can get through that theres not much doubt about getting through any other classes on campus

Dr. Lacy is an excellent dictionary to recite chemistry formulas and procedures of chemistry, however he is one of the worst professors in my 7 years of college. Lacy got the chemistry knowledge, but the man is terrible in human relations during class. He gives you every chance to earn that A and move ahead of the class, but only if you are a chemistry major. Lacy had an issue with me, I wasn't a chemistry major and foremost, I was brighter than any chemistry major in the class, that really pissed him off! I liked Lacy when he was yelling at the stupid people in class, yet he shouldn't be teaching chemistry anytime, anywhere.

Ok, so I failed his class, but how many people can say something positive about him after you receive an F. Anyway, Dr. Lacy is a very nice guy. You would think that he seems hard to talk to but when you get him in his office he's actually quite normal. During class he does tend to be on a power trip while we walks from board to board skaking the chalk in his hand with that look on his face like his shit don't stink--but regardless, he is a very good professor. He makes sure that you want to be in this major/career path or you may drop out because of him. If i could offer any advice it would be go to class. there are quizzes every friday. My mistake was not going to class on Fridays....or Mondays sometimes....and occasionally not on Wednesdays. You have to go to class, oh yea and do the homework which there is a lot of. But overall take him, he knows his shit--but only if you're prepared to work.

It amazes me to no end the amount of whining that goes on from people who would rather blame the professor for their total lack of ambition than to face the fact that they are lazy, no good, imbeciles who can't handle a real class. Most of the classes at Ship are so easy, it is like child's play to get an A. When a prof like Jeff Lacy finally tries to put substance into a class and expect something from his students, the whiners all come out of the woodwork. Dr. Lacy believes that if you are studying chemistry, you should LEARN chemistry. Got a problem with that? Drop out of college now, and you know what, you can get a job picking up the trash in my neighborhood. Because, I sure as HECK don't want you cooking up new medications, or becoming a half-@ssed doctor or something worse.

Dr. Lacy is a tough teacher, there is no doubt, but he uses this style for a reason. He starts the class much harder than he finishes and this helps to weed out those who aren't serious about learning. If you take his classes, YOU WILL LEARN CHEMISTRY!! Once you get used to him, he is an excellent teacher who has much to offer.

His teaching techniques are just different from other teachers, though he makes his point. Once you get used to him, he is really cool. I took him last semester and now I have him this semester too. I am very glad. I wish all my teachers were as effective ands nice as Lacy.

Lacey is a great guy, and he is a good teacher but he is no help other than that. If you don't keep up with him everyday he will not attempt to help you. Since Lacey is quite intelligent it's hard for him to dumb it down to a undergrad level when explaining things. You will need the book for his class to review or else it's over for you. Would not suggest him to anyone.

Where do I even begin. I spend countless hours a week doing assignments and studying for this class and I still failed. His notes are very unorganized and rarely completed. He expects you to know exactly what he's talking about when he hasn't even taught the material yet. His quizzes and test are borderline impossible. For one of the exams he told us it was on specifically four chapters. Test day comes and two of the four chapters aren't even on the exam. His office hours are very limited and not very helpful. He'll only help you if you're a chemistry nerd and suck him off every one in a while. Do yourself a favor and take a different professor. If there is no other professor available, take your own life while you still have time.

Doesn't explain anything in class. He doesn't finish problems (notes) that he'll grade you on later in the class. He takes class at a very fast pace and his notes are horrible. No exam review or anything of the sort and exams are impossible(class average is probably like a 30%). HE'S A REAL DICKHEAD IN CLASS. I get disrespected by the guy all the time. More than half the class has dropped his class.(why he hasn't lost his job for bad ratings?) He favors hot girls or just straight nerd guys. Anyone else he'll straight up just ignore if you have a question. HIS OFFICE HOURS ARE REALLY BAD AS WELL. NEVER AROUND.

Dr. Lacy is extremely smart and knows what he is doing. He thinks you should know what you are doing the second you walk into his class at the beginning of the year. I learned a lot from his class, more than I needed to know. His tests are hard and it is impossible to get 100% without being smarter than him. No one ever finishes early and there is always one or two kids he picks as his "pets". Bottom line if you are a smart chem major looking for a challenge, take him, if not avoid him at all costs.

I could tell Dr. Lacy was going to be a horrible professor from day one. I can't tell you how many times he has yelled at a student for something stupid. If he is in a bad mood (which is just about every other day), you can't even look at him without him finding something to swear at you for. His lecture is quite boring and hard to understand. He goes pretty fast with his notes and doesn't explain them very well. It seems like he assumes that you already know everything and he just has to remind you of it. I also don't like that he NEVER checks email, he even tells you that at the beginning of the semester. So the only time you can talk to him is in class or office hours. You can't email him with a random question if needed. He gives out homework every lecture, however you aren't required to do it. For his lab, I would highly recommend not taking any lab on Friday. His lab reports are due on the following Tuesday, which doesn't give you a lot of time to talk to him if you have a question about how to do it. Overall, his class is a lot of work in order to understand everything, and he is just a mean professor. I would highly recommend not taking him if possible.

I'm not sure why everyone is saying this professor grades fairly. Cute girls that SORT OF know what they're doing will get decent (not good) grades. He uses the simplest problems as examples in class and asks you to evaluate the curvature of the spacetime continuum bent by a molecule on a test. If you care about your grade, do not take him. Some highlights of the class include: making a 35yr old man cry in front of the whole class for asking a relevant question; crumpling up our quizzes and punting them for a single person passing in the quiz ~10secs later than everyone else; giving a girl a 0% on a lab for asking somebody else (not him) a question about a titration during lab. MANY MORE IN STORE FOR YOU.

I even read these comments before I took the guy and was like "oh these kids are just being babies." Believe me. Never ever ever take him if you can help it. I have never worked for so hard in my life. I spent hours on homeworks that I got a 0/10 on. I'm so freaking proud of my C in his class...and I get A's in basically all my other classes. Things just kept building up in his class until I was drowning in chem major focused concepts. The guy is a genius but totally wants to make you know every single class.

Dr. Lacy knows that he makes this class harder than he needs to be, in fact, he's very candid about that fact in class. The syllabus itself isn't difficult--most classes are lecture, with 3 exams and the final. There's homework every class, usually around 5 problems due the next class period. There's also a quiz every Friday, except exam weeks. Also, there are some in-class assignments that usually aren't too difficult. It's the exams that'll get you--he knows just about everything there is to know about chemistry, and he expects you to as well, in a 100-level chem class. He also seems to pretty much hate anybody that's not a total suck-up. Basically, this is the man you want researching the cure for cancer. This isn't the man you want teaching you how to research the cure for cancer--he can't teach worth crap.

Ok, I'm no slacker, A student, Deans list, plus in two years I've never missed a class. Lacy's a really hard teacher who can be completley insane. He would get mad, go off on a tirade about the students and then walk out of class. I went to his office hours almost every day after class for his homeworks. He wasn't there long and there was always a lot of people there to get help. He would always make you feel so stupid when you didn't understand something and asked about it. He also told me that if I did all the additional problems that he would give me a C overall because I did okay on the final and he gave me a D. I would NEVER recomend this prof to anybody!

I honestly dont understand how the man got 1 positive rating. He is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. Hands down. No one I have ever talked to has said other wise. He's a miserable old man and he takes it out on us. He's sexist. So I guess you should take the class if you're a hot young lady. Seriously, the girl I sat next to did worse then me on every test (every one), I turned in most of the homework assignments, she turned in about half. She got a better grade then me. How that adds up logically is beyond me. If you take him, you're an idiot. My old high school chem teacher had him and told me that he had to go before the dean just to get his grade to a D in one of Lacy's class. And even when he proved to Lacy that he should have got a D instead of an F, Lacy still wouldn't give it to him, Lacy told the dean to do what he wants. It turns out Lacy had marked one of his tests wrong, and gave him 30 pts below what he should have got. HOW can you not change that. Why are you a teacher?

I am a hard worker. There is a thing called hard work where you read the book do the homework, take the exam. quizzes etc. You go to office hours and get help. Eventually none of that seems to matter when the exams are handed back out. I am pretty much a straight A student, and these classes were impossible. You have to realize that chemistry is hard, and that you have to work, but it came to a point in that class that you could study all day everyday and never get anything. My recommendation is to never take his classes. If you get as far as you need you might just as well switch colleges and go somewhere else so you aren't in a 4 year program for 5-6 years.

If you want to talk about busting your balls every single night of the week doing homework to get practically no points, then this is the right prof for you... otherwise I'd stay away. Don't get me wrong Lacy is a nice guy but when he has a bad day he comes in and takes it out on the class. One time he told us that if he wears a hawaiian shirt on monday after the weekend then the chapter we were JUST learning in class wouldn't be on the exam but to no surprise..he came into class pissed that day and we had that chapter on the test. Real cool..NOT! And another thing the positive comments say is that lacy is available during his office hours...yeah for about 50 minutes once a day and u'll be lucky to get in right away because there's usually 3 or more people waiting to go over some things with him so before you know it his office hours are over and you're left with ur thumb up your ass still confused. So the moral of the story is don't take him if you have any sort of brain...he's ok for chem majors but any other major he'll completely kick your ass.

I dont even know where to start with this guy. Well, he is definitely a jackass. His homework is impossible, his tests are even worse and his quizzes are like the homework. Going to his office hours or his "help" sessions is useless. I once woke him up, DURING OFFICE HOURS in his office, and he answered my questions with questions. When a prof. says "I dont know what you dont understand", you are in trouble. A true jackass. The best thing about this guy is when he loses it in the middle of class and starts ranting about something totally irrelevant. This guy should never forget to take his antipsychotics and maybe go back to the military. GO HOME LACY.

I had this class as a first semester freshman and I hated it. I would dread going to this class. If you like to work your butt off on homework and then get half credit for it then this is the prof for you. I would do 4 pages of homework (all one assignment) and get 5 out of 12 points. There were always homework assignments and quizzes every friday. The exams were pretty difficult and that was even after 5 hours of studying! He knows his stuff but if you have difficulty with any kind of chemistry, do not take him. Sometimes he goes crazy and chucks chalk and erasers @ the board. Very scary!!! Go to all the classes but don't get your hopes up for a cancelled class; he never cancelled class. If you do not like chemistry, do not take him.

Overall, he sucks. Flies off the handle when you ask questions. Serious power trip. Conclusion: should not be teaching anybody, anywhere, anything

he is unhappy so he trys to make everyone around him unhappy. he is hard to talk to so it's not easy going to him for help. he also decides if he is giong to like you right away and you are screwed if he doesn't. he is also obviousely nicer to thoughs he likes. he is a bit sexist but in a strange way. he is niceer to the girls and harder on the guys. it's like he expects more from them. he may have his Phd in Chem. but needs to learn how to be a teacher. also he should not be head of the department. it gives him to much controle, it's like a dictatorship. this is our college not his.

This was the hardest class I have ever taken. I needed constant tutoring and still failed. I would work on the homework for hours and would get very little credit. Unless you are a chemistry genius...avoid at all costs!

Let me see, dr. lacy is hard and he shouldnt be allowed to teach. he really knows what he is talking about, but he makes everything seem so difficult. The quizzes are close to impossible and he gets annoyed when you are not prepared. so yeah, take someone else at all costs.

Lacy is a great Chem. professor who is definitely passionate about his field of study. For this class, as the year went on, subjects became harder and harder to understand and a decent background in Chemistry in high school would make this class 100 times easier. Needless to say, Lacy demands respect and when that means you should NOT talk in his class, even if it's a chuckle at something your friend is doing/saying, do NOT talk in his class. Play it safe, if you get this guy, listen to the lecture save story time for the end, it's what you should do anyway. For this class, he does not always going on about needless facts and actually makes his lectures on the very basics of Chemistry. If you like seeing experiments on occasion, I suggest taking him. If you want to screw around and talk during class, don't.

It's hard for me to decide, but admittedly I'm leaning towards negative. My first day of class I thought I would like the guy a lot, his no bullsh*t attitude seemed to fit, and I figured that if I payed attention and didnt do anything stupid I'd be in good shape. Not entirely so. He moves at a very fast pace, which can sometimes be hard to follow. There is also that tendancy of his to fly off the handle in class and either yell at someone or rant about something irrelevent to chem and make it seem like its our fault that he doesnt like it. My final comment is the one thing that I did not mind about him was that he did not seem to hold grudges. People say he does, but usually those people wont put effort into it or anything. He might get pissed at you, but he will get over it. My best advice would be that if you decide to take this class, buckle down and study like hell.

Dr. Lacy is an incredibly effective teacher, you will definitely learn chemistry, but his attitude is inappropriate and his behavior is erratic. I recommend taking your chemistry classes with a professor that is more amiable and congenial. Do not think you are tough as nails and can handle anyone; that is the mistake I made.
