Amazing teacher, really made you think. I wont say it wasn't challenging, but he definitely worked with you and let you know how you were doing. I learned a lot and had a lot of fun doing it.

First let me just say that Dr. Leitner absolutely loves what he does, you can just tell because he's very passionate in his lectures. Second of all, let me say that for the people who say this class is "too much work," they are wrong. There's quite a bit of reading in the first few classes, but after that the readings are very short and most of the "work" is coming to class and watching/listening to some fantastic plays. This class opened my eyes to different cultures, different genres and different methods of acting and plot. It was fantastic. The very first play we did was totally audio. We sat, in a dark room and listened to an original Greek play for two classes and I absolutely loved it. There are some classes where you have to come and pay attention and takes notes but some days you just enjoy great plays. His tests are fairly difficult, you can't just slide through them. He tells you to do readings two or three times, just do it. It takes 15 extra minutes and it gives you good grades. Pay attention, keep an open mind. He's eccentric and he's funny, and if you really want to learn and not just "get an easy A" you'll love his class. I'm almost two semesters out of his class and I still think about stuff that I've learned. I loved it!

If you enjoy mindless partying, watching American Idol every night, following the lives of celebrities or otherwise don't do much thinking for yourself...this class might be just what you need. It starts off kind of painful, with strict rules, but as soon as you watch the award winning plays, and feel that first catharsis, the rest of class is a blessing. Your beliefs will be challenged, your mind will be stimulated, and you may even learn something. I think I grew from this class more than any other I took at Ship, intellectually, philosophically and emotionally. If you don't like to think, don't sign up for this class and don't vote at elections please.

It may not be an easy class to get an A in, but if you attend class, pay attention to the art and keep up with the readings this class is not hard AT ALL to pass. I personally put an hour a week into reading the materials and reviewing when there was an exam. The exams were slightly tricky, but if you read the material and discussed the material with him after class or at office hours the tests were usually very doable. The material that you cover in the class is quite interesting and is especially interesting if you're a somewhat deep/ artsy person. Professor Leitner is an interesting guy and a great teacher. If you don't wanna THINK. DON'T. TAKE. THIS. CLASS.

Dr. L is a good all around professor. His material isn't that bad as long as you keep up with the reading. If you have his class I offer this advise: READ and use the hand outs to study. After taking his class I've seen three plays on broadway and I have Dr. L to thank for getting me interested. I would recommend taking his class whether you like theatre or not.

First of all, I am not one to love theater and the arts but Dr. Leitner made the class enjoyable. He is a funny guy and really loves what he teaches, so he is very willing to help you understand the material. It is not hard to get an A or B as long as you are willing to go to class, take notes, and do some studying. I definitely recommend Dr. Leitner.

I was about to not leave a comment because there were so many great ones, but as I got to the bottom and read some of the bullsh*t that other people wrote about Leitner, I couldn't help myself but leave a comment. Lets be honest, if you're in college, you're paying to take these classes. So why wouldn't you go to them? Dr. Leitner does expect you to be at every class. So like many others have said, if you're one of those students that likes to skip classes every week, don't even bother signing up for this class. This class was not easy by any stretch of the imagination. It is a lot of work, but soooo well worth it. Dr. Leitner helps teach you discipline, and reminds you of why you even went to college in the first place. I feel really bad that people are leaving him sh*tty comments, because he is probably one of the best profs this university has to offer. I literally lived in his office hours the semester I had him, but he was always willing to sit down and run through the stuff I was having trouble with. Take Dr. L, you won't regret it!!!

Dr. Leitner is a great teacher. He's very devoted to his work, and will prove it to you. Overall, this was a great class. We learned a ton, and there were so many things to be taken away that everyone should take it. You do not have to be the straight-A student, or the individual thatís barely making it to see the many things the art of theatre demonstrates. There are so many great things to take away from this class, and thatís why it should be recommended to all. Theatre has a way of really taking oneís perspective of the world, and changing it to see what life can be like from another individual's viewpoint. That is what made this class so strong, and effective. The only thing disappointing about this class is the attendance policy. However, it's very effective because it prepares you for the real world. If you go out and get a job, and you skip work you're going to be fired. If you miss class, you're not going to do very well. Lesson of life everyone.

Any negative comments about Dr. Leitner are the kids that never went to class. All that he expects is that you show up for class and that you do the readings. He is very enthusiastic about what he does, and it gets transferred to his students. He makes what some people would think, "not that interesting of a subject", into a very interesting one. Highly recommend taking this course.

I really enjoyed Dr. Leitner's intro to Theater class. It was among the top three most enjoyable classes I have ever taken. The professor is extremely excited about his subject and does an excellent job communicating his enthusiasm to the class. It is true that in order to do well in his classes one does have to spend time studying, however the material is interesting to study, particularly the plays that are audio streamed, so they are not a drag. I highly recommend taking this professor. His classes will provide you with an exciting experience you will never miss.

For all you haters and complainers. I had Dr. Leitner's class my first semester of my freshman year but failed because I was like those of you who are making excuses for your own irresponsibilities involving his class. Basically I wasn't going to class and wasn't reading the required assignments (which is all he really asks for). I took the class again second semester and am very thankful that I did because Dr. Leitner not only helped me realize how easy it could be to pass his class if I had just put the required time in or less(as you would for any other college courses) but I developed better ways of studying and organization that has helped me in every class I have taken since then. So for those of you who are bitching that Dr. Leitner won't offer his help, you're obviously not trying too hard. I remember Leitner offering anyone to come to his office hours almost every class, in which he will sit with you for an hour and answer any question you throw at him. His class is only based off of 4 test grades so all he is really asking is for you to read the assigned readings and look over your notes. And the assignments are only for your benefit, he doesn't grade them. He asks you to do them for your benefit to help you keep up with the class and understand the material much easier (there are study guides for your test, why wouldn't you complete them). Yes it can be a little tough, as any other class but he's not just going to hand you your grade, so if you don't want to be treated like a respectful college student then go find a full time job making $30,000 a year for the rest of your life. Therefore, if you feel like that is making you bend over backwards then maybe.. you need to realize, or will begin to realize that you're just not responsible enough to be college. Simple as that. And of course for any class if you don't go most likely you will fail! So if you don't like the class subject or material then don't take it, and if you don't have a choice, then don't take it out on him, his job is to teach "theater". And just because you volunteered for a lead role doesn't mean you get an automatic A, so obviously you were just.. that bad so he was able to look passed your sh*tty performance to your actual grades. So for anyone that is interested in taking theater I highly recommend taking Dr. Leitner.

Dr. Leitner is one of the best professors at Shippensburg University. Having previously enrolled in both his Theater History and Intro to Theatre courses, I can say that he expects his students to be responsible and mature. He treats his students with respect, and expects them to arrive to class early. Dr. Leitner also has many different styles of teaching that may appeal to different students. For example, students are encouraged to create power point presentations and ask the class questions, based on material from the textbook, which is the Socratic Method style of teaching. For his Intro to Theater courses, he uses no textbook. Students are required to download material from Blackboard and read various pdf and word documents. Students also listen to and watch multiple plays both inside and outside of class.

All I can say about leitner is that he is very.... eccentric. He has a lot of passion for his subject. This class was fun. You mostly watch/listen to different plays and musicals. You even get the chance to see one live, either on broadway (tickets are really cheap) or in harrisburg. He is nice man but he can be intimidating when he's throwing questions randomly at the class and expecting a split second answer. But he is really a nice guy and a fun teacher.

The class wasn't easy, by any means, but I learned more in his class than almost any of my other classes at Ship (Except Paris' :) I think Leitner is one of the best profs at Ship and is always willing to help you out with anything, just ask. He even helped me with something for another class when I asked. You just need to pay attention and do the work and you will learn a lot from him

He has a bad rep with some of these other kids below because they either are very narrow minded, or did poorly in the class. College is to expand your knowledge and learn. That is just what you will do here. The difference is that Dr. L is very passionate and excited about what he does, and if you look for that in a professor he will deliver it. Honestly its sad that people rip on Dr. L. I find it hard to believe that Dr. L would be such a bad guy. From my experience, he is anything but that. If your fear is that you will have to read plays out loud, and that is what is keeping you back, listen a second. My class read one play out loud as a group, and it was volunteer, so if you are timid don't be afraid. Here is just some of the material I was fortunate enough to experience:
- Oedipus the King
-Our Town
-Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
-RENT
-Death of a Salesman
-The Lion King
Theatre demands that you think about the art in front of you. There is more then to just what meets the eye. If you want to experience theatre with a passionate professor then this is the course for you. If you are not willing to be in class, do the work, and actually retain a really great art for years to come then this is the class and professor for you. He's a great man, and professor.

Dr. Leitner is one of the best professors I've had at Shippensburg. He is an understanding man who truly cares about his students and their well being. Some professors at this University are very disconnected and boring, Dr. Leitner is neither of these things. His up-beat style of teaching will help keep you engaged even at 9 in the morning. He's a really funny guy who's honestly there to give you a better understanding of theater. It's not a walk in the park, you will have to do some work but if you're afraid of a little work then you should probably reconsider your role at this University. You spend half the class watching theater via film, how hard can that possibly be? Dr. Leitner is a wonderful professor and I recommend him to every student.

Subject: "_____ does not translate well with theatre!"  (Mar 18 2008, 11:15PM)
Student: The Calling (should be theatre)
Class:Intro to Theatre (A)
13 of 38 students found this review helpful.

What can I say about Doc Leitner? Exams are challenging, students get to watch LIVE theatre on film (but remember, FILM DOES NOT TRANSLATE WELL FOR THEATRE--when watching it, you should be ACTIVE as opposed to PASSIVE). He opens your eyes to an art that should be recognized in America; theatre is not just for socialization or entertainment, but it should be for THINKING. Think about the play; DO NOT CONSIDER it a bunch of dumb people acting. If you are one of those slackers who feels like showing up late, don't even bother signing up for his class. In fact, do not even consider pursuing a college career. Dr. Leitner is a professional yet talented genius who brings the art to life. He helps you THINK for once in your college life. It is so refreshing to see a professor challenge you at such a critical form of art, and when you think about it, you will walk away with a smile and a brain. You watch fascinating plays (DO NOT call these films; there is a HUGE difference) such as "Mysteries," "A Raisin in the Sun," "Our Town," "Primo," and "Denial," where each of them draws a significant theme or moral that applies to people in American society. So, think about it: why not take a class where there are four tests, extra credit for attending all classes, and invigorating class discussion on art forms? Doc should be getting tenure for what he does! He is an inspiration and a part of this art. Do not consider this class a waste of time; YOU WILL enjoy theatre and YOU WILL gain knowledge with application of this active form of art. Doc's syllabus is a social contract--all you need to do as a student is to follow that contract. Sign up right now, sit back, and THINK. This class will change your perspective on theatre; trust me. Doc is a genius and should not deserve a bad rap and be considered blasphemous. He loves his job and lives for sharing an ACTIVE form of art with aspiring intellectuals such as yourselves. Enjoy.

Dr. Leitner teaches a fun course. He is enjoyable and gives you extra credit for just showing up to class. Most people don't understand that it's not high school anymore, and you are going to have to work for classes that are just "electives" for Gen-Ed requirements. You get to watch films, re-enact plays, and things that get you out of the daily routine classes/work. Take him if you enjoy the subject--not to take an easy way out. Don't be late, though, because you can get locked out!! (:

Dr. Leitners Intro. to Theater class allows you to see Art and culture that you would otherwise never get to experience. The class was enjoyable, thought provoking, and above all else, interesting. His exams require light studying, but they're not hard. Your attendance is important however, so if you don't like going to class you'll have a problem. NOTE: You don't act anything out in this class, Dr. Leitners class is about learning and appreciating art, not about performing it.

Everyone wants to bitch that Dr. Leitner's class is hard, and he's such a hard prof, but really he's not. If you show up for class, participate a little and don't zone out you can easily pass the course. But you HAVE to go to class. I took this class twice, the first time I never showed up and I failed, rightfully so. The second time I didn't miss a class and I received a B. I'm not a fan of theatre any more than the average student is, but it definitely opens your mind to a new taste of art. I think Dr. Leitner is a great guy, he's a very sociable character that loves to chit-chat. Take the course, and learn to appreciate what he teaches you... it might not be the greatest material but you learn a little bit more about yourself, because you're exposed to a new art.

He is a really funny professor, and also very passionate about his subject matter. If you do the reading before class you will leave the class understanding it being able to like it, not like it or remain neutral. If you complain that the professor is unrealistic in his expectations, and do not read before class... Then you're just a big lazy loser. Go home, drop out of college. No one said it was going to be easy. He makes you see one play as well, and you watch bootlegs of some plays. There is one that people can volunteer for and participate in. I would recommend taking the dates, terms, people, and other important facts and putting them on index cards and reviewing them a few minutes each night. You can get rings to keep notecards together at Wal-mart and Target for under 2 dollars. They probably even have them at the bookstore. Also, you can earn extra credit, 5 extra percentage points if you make it to all of your classes. If you want to learn from a passionate professor and have something to take away from the class then take him, do the work, and REVIEW YOUR NOTES AND HIS NOTES DAILY. You will not be sorry.

You have to take a lot of notes too. He really makes theatre interesting. I thought I would hate this class, but it ended up being one of my favorites.  Dr. Leitner is one crazy man sometimes... but he is a very good professor and is just there to get you a good background on theater, so if you need an art elective, I would def. suggest taking him. You will be sure to get an A if you just show up for class, read and take a few notes, and watch some movies. His tests are a breeze as long as you read over the notes, and he is always available if you need help with anything or just want to talk about the movies. Def a good guy!

I took Dr. Leitner in the Spring semester of my sophomore year. I'm now a junior and I would say that out of all of the professors that I have had, Dr. Leitner is definitely one of my top three favorite. At the same time, his class probably ranks in the top three most difficult classes I've taken in college (I'm a math major, so I think that that's saying a lot). However, in all fairness, he lets his students know on the very first day of class that they're not going to get an easy A. Most of the class periods are used to watch plays. There are only a couple of lectures and there are 3 tests. Basically, if you read the material that he gives you about each play and then show up for class to actually watch the play, his tests aren't TOO difficult. I emphasize the TOO, because even if you do all of these things, his tests still aren't easy. If you're looking for an easy grade, you probably shouldn't take Dr. Leitner. Even if you're looking for an A and you're willing to do all of the hard work, I'm still not sure that I would recommend this class. So why did I like Dr. Leitner so much. Because he actually made me appreciate theatre. His class wasn't the kind of gen-ed class that I walked out of sarcastically saying to myself, "well that will be good to know if I ever...." Instead, I actually left his class feeling as though I learned something worth knowing. I mean, he taught me to appreciate something that I had no prior knowledge of, nor the desire to learn about. I had never been to a play or even wanted to go to a play before this class. However, this summer, after taking Dr. Leitner's class, I found myself looking up tickets for plays that I had heard of before, but never bothered to acknowledge. So I recommend taking Dr. Leitner, not for a good grade, but for a good experience. He will teach you about something that he feels passionate about, and if you're really interested in having a learning experience, a little of that passion will be passed on to you.

This guy loves his work, and while the class does require a lot of work, it is worth it. Last semester this class was the hardest, most time consuming and the most interesting. Hes a good guy, but the class is not easy. Just show up, take notes and read, and you should be fine. And go to his office hours if your having trouble or ask him, he will explain it if you need him to.

I have read a bunch of these comments several times before signing up for the course and all I can say to those that leave negative comments are "What assholes." The first day I showed up I knew the class wasn't easy. But I can understand that this is a class where Dr. Leitner loves when his students learn. He was downright passionate toward the subject and he speaks of Artaud and Genet as if they were old buddies he hangs out with at a tavern. His tests are extremely difficult and the average amount of reading is not that difficult, but if you really sit down and show interest in the course you should do fine. I think I was definitely "theatrically ignorant" until I had this course because I never knew how much theatre makes a significant impact on society. He is an AWESOME professor and incredibly down to earth. I enjoyed when he got so excited toward talking about specific artists and after watching the plays I could understand why. He's an awesome man and the only reason everyone hates him is because they do not get the grade they expect. College isn't all about grades; it's about what a person learns. Dr. Leitner has taught me to appreciate the artists so much and I do not know what I would have done if I did not take this course. He is a kick ass prof and I mean that in the highest literal sense.

This class was my easiest class this semester. Dr. Leitner cares a lot about the information that he teaches, and it makes it easier to learn. He does take attendance, but you can miss three classes. And much of the stuff you do in class is watch videos. You take notes just for background material, and then the rest is just sitting there watching a video. I mean how easy is that?! And the plays he covers are not boring at all. They are very interesting, and easy to understand. I recommend him highly.

I heard that this class has been changed and u do no acting due to people's laziness, I was very disappointed and felt that my input may be of some help for students that actually came to college to learn. Dr.Leitner's class was very enjoyable. I have many wonderful memories from his class. I gained so much self confidence from taking his class. If you are late you will have to sing, but it is not that bad. I was late twice! The projects and acting we did were fun and brought out my creative side, I could not have taken a better gen ed!

As a freshman this class was a blast and I looked forward going to class each day. His class consists of 2 tests (which if you study they arent too bad). I didnt even open my book to study and I managed to get C's on all my tests (just imagine what you could get if you studied!?!). Lip-syncing (get into a group and move your lips to a certain song that the class picks haha), act out a scene in a book that you have to read (only takes a couple minutes), little projects here and there (which are fun though) and a final project that you have to perform (create and act out your own 15-minute play). If you love being in front of a crowd to entertain (which I am not too fond) this is the class for you!! You will have many memories in this class and I would definitely recommend him. Although, he doesnt teach and he tends to say "alright ok" ALOT (can get a little annoying)and this class does suck up alot of your "free time" but overall, a fun and even understandable prof.

Dr. Leitner is a very demanding prof, so if you don't care for significant amounts of work and being pushed passed what you think you're capable of, you probably don't want to take his classes. But if you don't mind being fully challenged and having a good deal asked of you, you'll do fine. You'll some times find your-self feeling a bit overwhelmed as-if you're taking a graduate level class, but at least you know you're getting your moneys worth; which is more than I can say about most of my classes. Dr. Leitner believes in what he teaches & definitely knows his stuff, you can learn allot from him about how to work in professional theatre if you're willing to work hard for it. So again if youíre just looking for an easy passing grade w/o putting much work into it, youíre better off taking a Geo class.

Dr. L's class is a very very demanding class. The projects that he makes you do are fun at the same time as time consuming. The posititve aspect of meeting with a group is you get to meet a lot of new people. If you are able to put yourself in a position to do a lot of group work then go for this class. I enjoyed it. His tests were quite a bit hard but nothing you can't study for. I mean this is what college is about... WORK. so to the people that want easy ass grades got to a Community College. Because no matter what class I have taken I have had to work whether it be meeting with a group or not. He is a good prof all around and if you put the effort into the class you'll do fine.

This is a great class for those of you that like to clown around and have fun. If you want an easy grade sorry but you at least have to put forth some effort and outside work... The group work can be demanding of your free time outside of class but it is better than reading for several hours at night like some classes. It is a class that you will look back on with fond memories and when you see your classmates later you will share some funny memories from class. The tests are hard but if you read the material you will do good. Plus he is very understanding when you have a group member that isn't carying their load and you need to get rid of them.

Highly recommend him. He's funny, very into what he teaches (he's got the haughtiness of an actor sometimes), the group projects he has you do are fun if you like theatre or performing. Only draw back (for some) is that if you come in late, be prepared to be embarrassed, he will make you sing in front of the class...but that's funny as hell anyway. Classes aren't that difficult as long as you pay attention and get things done on time.

Nice guy but very full of himself. Do not be late to his class orelse he will make you sing a song from Sound of Music. There is a lot of acting in class, but it's fun. Lots of class interaction, so it's cool because you get to meet new people and stuff. Tests are multiple choice and a little tricky. No Papers or anything but an end of the year assignment (write and act our your own play) that you will end up working very hard on. He likes competition in class and among plays. I would say take him... its a fun class.

This professor is impossible to pass with an A. Although he makes you think you can do well and be an "A" student, he makes his exams so ridiculous with questions you've never even studied before and random irrelevant questions about the plays. You can know and understand every play you've learned, but still fail miserably. Also, if you can't stand teachers with a "tick", don't take him. He makes you feel really crappy if you're not one of his "A" students.

His tests are difficult with very detailed questions from the readings. He constantly says he will change everyone's views on theatre but in the end I still didn't get it. Once again, hes not a bad guy but he just takes a gen. ed. course way too serious.

There are not enough words in the english language to describe my dislike for leitner . . . He may be good at theatre, but as a teacher/professor he sucks big time . . . He'll make last minute changes and expect you to bend over backwards for his class . . . I mean, I know college is a lot of work, believe me, I know, I'm in organic chemistry right now, but he doesn't seem to understand that some of us have 18 credits, a job, and work with the community theatre and are doing the best we can damn it . . . He is barely ever available, so if you can't make your schedule work with his, you're screwed, b/c he won't work with you . . . seriously, if you're interested in theatre, don't take leitner's class, take paris's, and if you're seriously interested in it, why are you at ship in the first place? transfer like i'm doing . . . just don't take his class . . .

First off let me say that Dr. Leitner is a nice guy, and he does try to spice up class by trying to make his students laugh. But other than the fact that he is a nice guy, his class SUCKS!!! First, you can forget missing class with this guy. Dr. Leitner takes attendance every day, and if you miss more than 4 or 5 classes you fail, no questions asked. Second, I promise, if you are not watching a stupid movie, every class you will get a bombarded with endless pages of notes, not to mention you will get a hand cramp trying to copy all the notes that he has. And even when you watch a movie, he gives you a sheet of questions that you have to answer based on what you are watching. And the worst part is that all those notes donít even help you on the exam. His tests are very difficult, and extremely tricky. I swear he tries to trick you on the true and false part of the exam on purpose. I will put it to you this way; if I was a senior and I needed a Theater credit to graduate on time and he was the only professor left that was teaching that class, I would chose to graduate late! Basically, if you enjoy endless pages of notes that donít help you on your ridiculously hard exam then by all means take Paul Leitner; I promise it will be an easy F.

If you are dead set on theatre then take Paris... there is NO way he can be worse than Leitner. His class is SO stupid! Here's what happens: he will talk for 2 minutes acting really deep and says that he's trying to touch you on a personal level.. this is such bullshit. Someone walked in late and he was pissed because he said it was the exact moment he was going to connect with us. Like he had us "in this place" ...blah blah blah... he says the best way to teach us about theatre is to show us. So basically we would watch a video about directing and he was like, ok, now you know how to direct. He doesn't actually teach!! then he gives us these projects that I would spend forever on and I would have to meet my theatre group AT LEAST once a week. Does this sound like something you want to put yourself through? He even treats people like shit. He yells at you if you aren't doing something exactly his way. It is so annoying! Then he'll ramble about how you should be artistic... This man erks me to the point I hope I never even have to hear his voice again. It's true, he is totally full of himself and thinks that he's being a good teacher by breaking into song for no reason. I CAN'T STAND HIM.  Okay, so, if you're a Freshman, Intro to Theater isn't a bad class to take. A Freshman's workload is light enough for a Freshman to easily make enough time for this class. However, Juniors and Seniors beware! This class eats your time up. This class can be fun at times. However, sometimes this class is frustrating because you have to memorize his off the wall facts, read plays over and over again to keep from failing his tests, and repetitiously practice performances. Oh, and don't think about getting an A in this class unless you have a -lot- of free time on your hands to spend on this class.

Dr. Leitner is a funny Professor. You have to memorize a lot of information and be able to apply literary terms to the plays that you watch. But, if he sees that you are really trying, he will not fail you. Just email him on a daily basis with questions if you don't understand. And make sure you come to class because attendance is your only extra credit and you're missing a lot of information if you don't come to class. Enjoy!!!!!!!

OK, here is the deal. He is not a bad guy at all. All you have to do is go to class and do the projects that are assigned and you will be ok, BUT his tests are pretty hard. He gives 2 tests but doesnt teach anything that is on them because you are expected to read the book and learn it yourself. So basically if you do the group work you will pass the class. But one little annoying trait that might drive you crazy is that he says "alright ok" over and over and over again when he rambles on. Thats all i got "alright ok"!

The guy will seem like a big jerk at first, but in comparison to other BOC teachers, he is good. He critiques your speeches to the bone, and puts you on the spot quite a lot. But this only makes you want to work harder to please him. NO TESTS! thats one of the best parts of his class. Most in the class hate him, but he is very effective as a speech teacher.
