I love this teacher. He's nice, he helps you understand and know how to make a speech. He makes you laugh all the time. He likes to comment randomly on squirrels. He's a great teacher and easy to understand.

The most unbiased view I can give on Dr. Lu: You are most likely to receive AT LEAST A "B" in this class, with minimal effort. If you are looking for a class where you want a solid average, but could care less about learning anything, then this is the class for you. No tests but the final which was the Chapter review at the end of each chapter, (the exact questions.) Downside: I just recently declared my major in Comm/ Journ. & I fear I might be screwed because I did not learn anything. homework- We had two homework assignments in his class, which were graded easier than the speeches, if you actually put in semi effort to complete them. Speeches- No matter what the topic, (unless it was about squirrels) you are bound to receive at least a "B" average. Unless you go over the top and beyond you will not receive an "A" on a speech. Oh, you are also permitted to use flashcards for every speech. Overall I highly recommend this class especially if you like to procrastinate and write your speech the night before.

He is flat out an amazing teacher and person. If anyone has the opportunity to take Dr. Lu, DO IT!!!! He is fair with grades, soooooo nice, FUNNY and just always in a good mood. He doesn't make you feel nervous during your speech, and doesn't pinpoint embarrassing things that you do while giving your speech. I know some speech teachers make you feel stupid and point out all the things you do wrong, he doesn't. He is aaaamazing and just an awesome teacher!!. I am honestly not an amazing student. I have to work for everything. I am a "B", "C" student, and after his class I got an "A-". He is awesome!!!

Dr. Lu is awesome. He is Chinese and a little hard to understand sometimes, but it's not impossible. The grades in the class are 3 speeches, a final, 1 essay, 2 speech outlines, and a group presentation. The final comes right from the test questions in the book so if you study those it's easy, that's the only reason I bought the book. We didn't have time for the group presentation so we were only graded on the paper (4-5 pages). I got an A on all three speeches, just prepare for the speeches and you'll be fine. If you get anything less than a B it's because you didn't go to class and aren't very smart, the class is just that easy.

Dr. Lu is that type of professor that if you want to pass def. take him. He is such a funny guy & always makes the class laugh no matter what! Either talking about his life or mentioning squirrels [HE LOVES THEM!]...Yes he does send a paper around taking attendance but why would you wanna miss this class? ITS EASY! You don't take tests besides the final...which was 50 questions...and the answers were in the back of the book...so read over them once..and you got an easy A! You do 3 speeches and a group project. Speeches are a piece of cake & the group project was easy as well. If you don't take his class IDK what else to say cause that's just dumb lol. Def. one of the best professors by far at SHIP...HANDS DOWN!!! =]

He's a really funny guy, and very understanding. He usually gives out an average of 87% on speeches. And if you wing it he'll give you at least an 83% (depends how good you are), and if you really try he might give you a 95%. O and its not even necessary to read for his class. Overall his class was easy, and a good GPA booster.

THE MOST FUN CLASS YOU WILL EVER BE IN! It seems boring as hell at first, but then you hear him talk and tell jokes you cannot stop laughing. He does the sweetest British accent for a China man, he is the coolest teacher I ever had in my entire life. The speeches are simple just follow the guidelines and you have a B. I actually enjoyed going to his class every time. And squirrels... the dude loves squirrels, talk about squirrels and you will get an instant A. Take my advice take Dr. LU hes the F*ckING MAN!

I liked Dr. Lu but my original thought was what is some guy from China going to be able to teach me about Human Communication? Well he has a lot of funny stories about what confused him when he first came to the US which actually help you understand. He speaks with an accent but is easy to understand and he actually speaks 2 forms of chinese, english and french which is rather impressive. The only thing that really bothered me about his class were the speeches. I'd get low As or high Bs on my speeches and this one girl that either talked about her mom or football would always get high As. I think they may have been pity points because her speeches were crap and she was obnoxious as hell and was rather large with bad hair.

This class was such a waste of life, and it really shouldn't be a requirement. Lu made it at least somewhat bearable, though. He's pretty funny, and if you can get him to talk about squirrels you're set. There isn't a lot of work, and the midterm was pretty easy (there's no final). The only problem is that he takes attendance, so if you plan on missing a lot of class, he isn't the one to take.

Dr. Lu made class pretty enjoyable. I've never met a man that loved squirrels so much! He has plenty of stories and makes class interesting. I had it at 9:00 and have not even been tired. He really involves his class. He's kind of a tough grader, but not too bad. Just pay attention and put forth some effort and you'll be fine. Remember, any speech about squirrels is a plus!

Profesor Lu was such an easy teacher but it felt like a chore to have to sit in his class. It was just so boring! I fell asleep one time (and I had class at 2:00) and he yelled at me but i was so tired! He grades sorta hard but it won't be anything lower than an 80%. He's sorta amusing too. Don't make him your first choice but he's not that bad if you end up taking him. Just remember to always go to class cause he takes attendance.

Dr.Lu has a great sense of humor, which made class a joy. The workload was very manageable and the speeches were fairly simple to come up with. I dreaded BOC before I took it with Dr. Lu, I was wrong to do so. He made it a great experience. There is a mid-term, which I highly suggest you study for-it's where I screwed myself out of an A, but that was my fault. We did a group project which was simple enough and I learned a lot about what makes a good public speaker...I'm a better man for having taken the class for sure. BTW- when he asks...it's pronounced "Loo-Shin"(Lu Xian)

Yes, sometimes Dr. Lu was quite weird, but if you want an easy class I definately suggest him.

I have had Dr. Lu for four classes now and he is without a doubt the best professor I have ever had in terms of personality, character, and easy classes. He will excuse any absence you have as long as you email him before class. He wants his students to do well and you can tell in the way he teaches. He is so easy that before the midterm, he posts the questions and the answers to the test on the course website. His assignments are so easy and they require a minmal amount of effort. I would reccomend him to anyone- espacially speech comm majors! Dr. Lu Rules!!!!

You may think just because Dr. Lu's Chinese, he doesn't know English... He's very intelligent and loves to incorporate his life experiences into the lesson... Not too hard b/c you only have 3 speeches, and 1 midterm that is multiple choice... there's no final, just a group project that's not too bad either. Overall Dr. Lu's a super guy, but also strict in his 'own way.' Don't work too hard b/c it's really not that bad...as long as you put forth effort, you'll do fine.

This is the easiest class. I don't know how anybody could complain too much. Yes, the lectures can be extremely boring but i think that happens with every prof. There is only 1 test all semester and its simple multiple choice. The readings assigned are not really necessary and can be just glanced at for a general idea. The speeches assigned are all easy and generally short. Take this prof for an easy B.

A fantastic professor. You may be irritated by the fact that he's Chinese and teaches oral communications, but it's not just the fact that his class is easy that makes him a great prof. He often spoke of "humility" in his class and that has stuck with me. He has stories to tell about China and you'll learn something along the way. Not out to fail you at all, he's out to make you a better speaker. He accomplished that with me.

This professor tries to act super cool instead of teaching the material. His grading is completely biased on how he thinks and feels about the "material". I can't seem to understand how he can grade others on their speech techniques when he doesn't even have an "American accent". Honestly, the class is a huge waste of time and you won't learn ANYTHING. He makes biased remarks and rude comments about groups of people. It is hard to tell how well you will do in his class because he is 100% wishy washy on how he grades based off his perception of you not your work.

Well, normally I can tolerate sh*t from people. But this man takes the cake of sh*t. He never teaches from the book, then when you take the midterm, it's all information from the book. Also, the last two months are crammed with speeches and a group presentation. His grading scale for these speeches is absurd. Under 66% is an F, 66%-76% is a D, 77%-87% is a C, 88%-98% is a B, and 99%-110% is an A. Let me tell you right now, it is impossible to get an A on your speech. So, my advice is that if you are given this professor, do everything in your power to get a different prof. As is said in Monty Python, "Run away, run away!"

Dr. Lu's class was the biggest waste of my time EVER. I took the same class in high school, so all of the info was a repeat and was pointless to wake up for that day. Dr. Lu is inconsiderate of his students (deducting points from your grade for absences...no matter what your reason may be, because he claims that all behaviors have consequences if you deserve them or not), he doesn't like to be questioned about his grading system for speeches, and no matter how kick-ass you think your speech may be, you won't get an A. All in all, his class was bullshit, a pain to wake up for, and the only good thing about the class was I met my sig. other...we both sat and b*tched about how much we hated Lu and the class. Avoid this prof, if at all possible- unless you enjoy sitting and hearing his stories, and looking up quotes that apply to the chapter in your damn BOC book.

This prof is really weird. He constantly talks about his love for squirrels. His grading system is really unfair because he thinks of a number in his head and that is your grade for your speeches. His tests are really easy, but the group project is RIDICULOUS. He puts you with 7 other people and hopes you find time to write like 4 different papers with them and you have to put together a 10-15 minute speech. Its just really hard to try to get that many group members together at one time to do a project.

Dr. Lu is kind of boring but this class wasn't that hard (except for the midterm which is the only test he gives).  I enjoyed having him for a teacher. I found him to be funny and entertaining. He makes you find 2 quotes for each chapter, and then you might have to share one to the class, but he tends to forget after a while so it is no big deal. Also by the end of the semester he just lets the chapters go and then you find out that there is no final, so there was no reason to study the book, not that I did though. I think that he shares alot of insight and makes class enjoyable as long as you respect him and don't try to pack up early or yawn too much. He is big on body lanuage so if you sit up front, he is nicer to you and if you act like youre paying attention, regardless of if you really are or not, you will do fine.

Seriously, don't take this guy if you can avoid him.You will never get an A on your speech unless he takes a special liking to you.He has no grading system, it's like he just gives you whatever grade he feels like giving you.His class is soo boring it'll put you right to sleep. Also, at the end of the semester it will be crazy. You have like two speeches and a group project to do and the group project will be nearly impossible if the members of your group actually have their own lives and things to do, too.

This was the worst class I've ever sat through. All he does is lecture and when he does assign work (group work) he wants a 15 min presentation and a 4 page paper handed in at the next class. I don't know about you but getting 8 ppl together in one day is impossible. The syllabus he handed out on the first day of class was changed so much he didn't even know how many points there were at the end of the semester. He gives one mid term and then 2 days before the test he emailed everyone to say he was adding more questions to the test. I didn't really think that was fair. He constantly belittles the american education system which makes me wonder why is he even teaching here?

A very intelligent, eloquent, and honest man. His grading system is in his own words "arbitrary," meaning he takes into consideration visual aids (if reccommended, use them) and whether or not he liked the speech, essentially. Or something. I'm not really sure. All I know is that no one got above a b+ in my class. (Not to worry, one of the shittiest speeches I've seen recieved a "B.) But hey, BOC is a bigger waste of time than high school health class, and is about as important, so just hang in there until it's over.

Ok, so we all can admit that the Gen. Eds. are bullshxt. I thought that was what high school was for. Anyways, this is how you're going to feel everyday when you walk into Dr. Lu's class. Hes a great guy, but the course can drive you crazy. You've got 1 M/C exam and 3 of the most simple speeches I ever had to give in my life (I already do this stuff at my job so I'm kind of jaded to the whole BOC thing). Don't bother to read, you're just wasting your time and keep in mind that if your family dies in a horrible flaming car crash and you can't make it to class, he'll only take 3 pts. off your final grade. Have a nice day!
