I took Professor Mao the first semester of my freshman year and he was amazing. Sometimes he is unclear but is always willing to answer questions. he keeps the class involved and his midterm and final were easy as cake. I am going to take him again for my English requirements. I would recommended him to anyone who needs to take wifys.

Dr. Mao is a very interesting professor. He makes random, extremely racist/sexist jokes but sometimes they are funny (mostly offensive). Tests and quizzes are a joke. Listen and pay attention during the class on test/quiz days because the material on the exams come from the stories assigned for that day and nothing from previous classes. Don't bother reading the story before class (unless you have a presentation due) because the entire class time is devoted to re-reading the story. If you want an A make sure that your essays are grammatically correct and that you pay attention during class on test/quiz days. If not you will get a B just for showing up.

Dr. Mao is a very strange man. The comments here are absolutely correct in saying that it is nearly impossible to get an "A" in the class. Mao does not put a lot of effort into grading assignments; part of me thinks that he simply puts a "B" on the paper, because it is easier. However, it is a night class that you only have to go to once a week, plus the workload really isn't that bad. There are 2 tests, a few in-class essays, quizzes, and presentations paired with a paper. I wouldn't necessarily recommend Dr. Mao, but he isn't as bad as I thought he was the entire semester. Believe it or not, by the end of class, I thought he was pretty darn funny!

He seems like a grouch when you first meet him, but he's actually quite funny and nice. You also think you're not learning jack in his class because he rarely quizzes you on anything, and when he does he literally gives you the answers first. Class is pretty cut and dry; you come in and he goes around the room and asks everyone a question. You'll write a couple of easy essays. Basically, while you think the class is a waste all semester because you don't actually DO anything and when you do, it seems inconsequential; somehow Mao manages to give you a ton of content knowledge. I don't know how he does it, but I wound up learning a great deal in this class.

Dr. Mao is one of the coolest professors that I've had so far. He goes over everything we read in class and summarizes every story you read. The quizzes are extremely easy and you'll most likely always get at least a B on an essay. Overall he is a great professor.

The reason for many B's, little to no A's, and not a lot of C's is because he is a stickler with grammar. This class has virtually no work. One outside assignment of a 6 page research paper that you have forever to complete. I'd like to comment on his so-called "racism." He is not racist, and believes if Americans look at race and ethnicity as a joke, it will disappear. I'm a believer in this view as well. So those of you who believe otherwise probably were sleeping in his early classes. I'm definitely taking him for Intro. to Lit! Dr. Mao is the Man!

Class:Intro to Literature (A)
13 of 38 students found this review helpful.

Everyone mentioned to me that it is never easy to get an "A" in Dr. Mao's class. Well, they are certainly correct. Dr. Mao is one of the funniest professors here at Shippensburg, and he has taught me to look at literature from a societal perspective rather then relate it to the perspectives that literary critics focused on. With his offbeat jokes, random films (that always made me question why they had any significance to the class, considering he would only show portions of the film that were the funny parts of the short story), as well as the poorly worded essay assignments, I felt he really knew how to make the class come together for the typical college student. He'll give you the grade if you put in the time and actually work on these papers/projects. I'm an idiot, so usually when he says "write a 3 to 4 page paper," I end up writing a 6 to 7 page paper because I feel a lot can be expanded based off the thesis. If you put the time into this class, actually provide rhetorical/analytical analysis toward stories and remain real specific on tests and quizzes, you should get an "A-" tops in that class. Kids get "Bs" because they do not care to put more time into reading these stories. And let's face it, if you don't care in the presence of Mao, then Mao believes you don't care about your grade. This is college...you take this course to learn. Mao is the man...hands down greatest man I have ever encountered at Ship.

Dr Mao was so easy for college writing. Its pretty much show up and get a B. Or don't show up and he will let you redo your writings. People even missed the midterm and were allowed to make it up and he sometimes will let you rewrite a paper. He will make a lot of funny remarks in class. I think its hard to get an A out of him but if you are satisfied with B's I would definitely take him.

I had Dr. Mao for college writing. It had to be the easiest class I had last semester, Fall 02. He goes over reading and asks everyone a question, for participation I guess. He also hardly gives out any real work except for this one report which only requires minimal effort. You have to read the report to the class, but it's not hard at all. He also has these conferences, where you only have to go to class once and talk to him about how you are doing. While the selected students of the class have to go to their conferences everyone else has no class. This is done twice in the semester, you're off for about a week atleast. Also no matter how good or bad a paper is, meaning you wrote an average paper, he will still give you a B. His final and midterms are a joke, yes another easy B. Bird course if you ask me.

If you want a class where you don't do any work and will get a B for it, then take Dr. Mao. The only work that I had to do was write a six page paper and a couple of in class essays. And on all of these assignments, I got B's on. Personally, I would have liked to get a better grade than a B, but for the amount of work that I had to do I didn't mind. Most people I know that were taking College Writing had to do a lot of work, but I didn't. So take Dr. Mao if you wouldn't mind getting a B.

I really didn't read any of the stories and recieve a B on the test and the quiz. I require that u do because He will call on u to read out loud and ask u question about the stories but other than that.  Ok he really does give only B's--I did score a few A's even on my research paper-but I worked my butt off on that. It is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to earn an A, so I suggest taking another prof if you want the A. However just to pass with a C would be easy enough with this dude. But you will NOT LEARN. He doesn't teach English or writing. He only says--watch this, write a paper on this. Never does he say HOW to properly write a paper, where to place propositions or help you rearrange your subject in your sentence. Then when he grades -hes like a thesaurus. 87% of his marks on your paper are just to change a word using a synonym. You'll be bored and won't get your moneys worth or any knowledge. I'm glad I learned proper writing in high school, otherwise I would of failed and not even known why.

I really hate to give Mao a negative review, because in all honesty, I like the guy, but as I'm sure you've been reading in other reviews on here, he's just not a great professor. He does have a pretty good one-liner from time to time, and says awkward things that make class funny, but that doesn't change the fact that his classes have a mild tendency to drag on. I might be saying this because I took a glorious 3 hour night class, but it was long, regardless. He also has really strange inflection when he's speaking... he tends to suddenly EMPHASIZE random words which HAVE no major SIGNIFICANCE....you get the idea. He systematically calls on people too (you'll notice this by the 2nd or 3rd class), he'll usually start on the row to your right, and work his way across the classroom, so you can somewhat predict what he's going to ask you.
In summary:
Yes, he can be funny, but also boring.
Yeah, there's a pretty good amount of reading.
Yes, you will probably get a B.
No, I wouldn't recommend him.

This teacher is absolutely awful. I learned NOTHING about College Writing! We don't go over anything about writing at all! He talks about the most random things, his immigration, his life in general..you learn nothing about writing at all. All his assignments are soo vague, you get no outline of what he wants. You write a 10 page paper and he doesn't even read it! He sucks as a teacher and shouldn't be teaching.

Dr. Mao is not really a bad man personally, but he is not an effective teacher at all. He comes off as a really easy teacher, which is part of the problem, because he actually assigns alot of reading and some difficult (e.g. poorly worded) assignments. But because he acts like he doesn't care, it doesn't make you want to try at all, and so you'll give in half-assed assignments that he'll give Bs and Cs. On the rare occasion when you feel like trying, you might get an A, but will probably just get a B anyway. So yeah, take Mao and you will likely pass the course. But you'll have to put up with his bullsh*t along the way. Bullsh*t such as his off-color jokes (mostly of the gay or black variety), big reading assignments that you probably won't even discuss in class, poorly-worded essay questions that you have to puzzle out every week, and boring classes in which anything anybody says gets absolutely no feedback from him, so you don't even know if what someone said actually happened in the story or not. Since Mao acts like he really doesn't want to teach, you'll end up feeling like you really don't want to learn, which doesn't help the already weird grades he gives. Oh, also, the feedback on his assignments doesn't make any sense. Sometimes he'll claim you paper doesn't have something in it that you did put in the paper, or sometimes he'll expect you to put something completely off-topic in your paper. Fair warning. His grading doesn't make sense, and if you can put up with him, you'll likely pass without learning a thing.

I have to give him a negative comment. Sure, he's funny in class and it's great to hear offensive stuff coming out of a prof's mouth, but he's just not a good professor. He throws B's around like there's no tomorrow, regardless of how much or how little work you put into an essay. In class, he'll be reviewing the reading and ask a student a question, then answer it himself, then ask the student again. Usually, if he allows the student to answer, he will correct them...but say the exact same thing as if he wasn't even listening. The lectures can be very monotonous, except for his humor, and he tends to repeat himself. I wish I could give him a good comment because I like the guy, but he just doesn't do his job well. Still, if you want an easy B and don't care about the material, take him.

I've always been best at writing so it came as a shock when I got quite a few "C's" on the little 1 page papers he makes you write every class. He seems somewhat intimidating at first but is actually pretty funny. He'll make awkward jokes that sound somewhat creepy(He told us his wife goes to Victoria's Secret once). I honestly don't think I learned anything really, though others will say they did. I got a B-. He's not good or bad so don't take him unless you have slim choices.

I had Mao for a night class, and I seriously felt like I was taking 4 classes that semester instead of 5. You have some sort of assignment due every class (a quiz, test, or essay, but they're all worth 10% each, so the classification doesn't even matter), and most of the time, you'll get a B. I'm used to getting A's, so when I got a B+ on my first assignment, I freaked a little... until I talked to people and realize Mao pretty much only gives B's. After that, I gave up and started handing in crap... and still got B's. I also just didn't hand in one assignment, but I don't think it mattered. Also never really did any of the reading, but the way class is set up, you really don't have to. He also canceled class a few times, and for night classes, usually lets out early. Overall, it wasn't a hard class (at all), but I don't feel like I learned anything.

I was told the other day that a classmate of mine went to Mao's office and he told her that if he took the class he would recieve a B so somehow that means that it is virtually impossible to get an A. He doesnt give you an A on anything and demands that you write papers without any style, and to the way that he likes it. You really only need to show up for class you hardly do anything which is why im Neutral about him. I hear of these other College Writing professors who give out an essay a week. Mao just does a couple in class and one large paper that you will probably get a B on.

He's not a good teacher, but it's only because teaching isn't his top priority. He just wants to publish books. But he's funny and his class is easy. He definitely doesn't demand much of you. If you just want the credits and a decent grade, then take him. If you actually care about getting something out of the class, you might be disappointed.

Dr. Mao is an OK professor. He sends around a sign up sheet everyday to take attendance and asks everyone in the class a question, but once he asked you than you can sleep. I had him early in the morning but his classes are a little boring and his sense of humor is a little "of the rocker" but over all he is ok.

Ok professor. Doesn't listen to a word you say, and has some preoccupation with gay people. Automatically puts a B on pretty much every paper given to him. I don't think he knows the letter A. If you're shooting for higher than a B in this class, don't take him! If you're looking for an easy B then he's a good choice.
