Before the semester started I was warned against taking Marshall but I decided to stick with the class and it's just fine. You have to read the book outside of class or you won't know what he's talking about. He isn't there to teach, he's there to summarize. I've realized that all of the people in my class who hate him are the ones doing bad. I think he is funny, even though he tells the same jokes and stories all the time. Bottom line if you put in effort the class won't be too bad. It's a hard class in general.

I dont understand how he could have so many negative comments. I mean Principles is hard regardless of the teacher you get. And, no I'm not some straight A student, more like Bs and Cs. Michaels at least tries to aid you and show you how to do well. He gives you bullsh*t assignments that may take awhile because you have to draw things and label and color everything, just like elementary school! They are super easy assignments that give you an extra 100, but they also are very helpful when test time comes. I agree he goes off on tangents a lot that do not pertain to bio, but he makes class fun, or at least tries to. Don't get me wrong I hated him after I got my first test. I swore up and down that he was the worst teacher ever until I got to know him and understand his style of teaching. His tests are hard but what biology test aren't, other than basic bio?! Once I realized how to utilize my book and with the use of his long, vigorous, yet easy assignments my grades improved and I also began to thoroughly enjoy going to his class. Dr. Marshall is a very understanding teacher. I forgot to hand in a lab assignment and he let me had it in late with no penalty. Also for our hardest test that everyone bombed, he curved it, and my C+ became an A! All in all no his class isnt easy, but not many are. Yes, you have to study and work hard, welcome to college!Dr. Marshall is by far my favorite biology teacher, bc if you are a science major, then you really understand how boring these teachers are. Dr. Marshall is a great, corny, but funny prof and I would suggest you take him!

He is the best teacher I've had so far. He's funny and keeps the lecture interesting. It is biology, so it is a difficult class and you must must must do your work but he as a teacher makes it better to understand. I loved this man and would gladly take a class with him again.

Bio 1 and 2 are both hard, no matter which professor you get, but in general Marshall was a good prof. If you needed a day or 2 extension on a report or assignment he'd give it to you, and whenever you wanted to stay and chat extra on something in class, he would be willing to explain it better. Also he puts his powerpoints online and has study sessions before every test where he goes over everything. Use these two things and you should easily get a good grade

I began the semester by emailing all of my professors asking what books and other materials we would need for the class. I got one of the rudest responses a professor has ever responded. He basically said that he thought I should just go look in the bookstore for myself (which, the books were obviously not in yet). ANYWAY, so I began the class absolutely disliking him. BUT, he isn't that bad. He will keep you awake during class with his lame jokes and singing. Ultimately, he will try his best to help you and he grades on a curve.

His class can get a little boring at times, but Dr. Marshall does his best to make it interesting. He cracks a lot of jokes and is always happy. He is a really fair teacher: he posts his powerpoints online and gives detailed study guides of what are on his tests.

He is a little goofy and says the same jokes over and over but the material he is teaching is so cut and dry. His study guides have everything on there you need to know for tests. He gives huge amounts of extra credit for coming to class on fridays. He provides take home tests where some of the questions are exactly the same as the in class portion. There are 5 tiny writing assignments, 3 tests, and a final. If you really want to do well, all the information is..SURPRISE..in the book, so read it. If you cant ace this class then get outta college!

I hate science of any kind, biology included. But Dr. Marshall actually made Problems of the Environment decently easy and interesting. He gave 4 mini-tests and a final, but the final was only like 50 questions, and if you attended class, all the info was in the lectures he gave. If I had to take bio again, he'd definitely be my choice.

I really can't understand why so many people had such a problem in his Bio 100 class. It was mostly freshmen, and seems that almost half the class dropped. His class was easy, so long as you showed up and paid even minimal attention. He takes pains to keep the discussion at least semi-interesting, telling horrible old jokes, and relating the subject matter to stuff we can use. The first half of the course is basic science and nothing I didn't cover in 10th grade, which was a damned long time ago compared to most students. If you think Marshall was tough, I hope you're majoring in Dirt Science because college is going to be the longest 7 years of your life.

Unlike many other professors, Dr. Marshall actually teaches the students the information rather than just showing it on a powerpoint presentation. If you know how to take notes from a verbal standpoint I really recommend him. Although he also lectures in lab, it helps you in the long run for lab practicals and write-ups. His tests really aren't too bad except sometimes the questions are a little tricky. He may joke around a bit but its not that bad sometimes its actually entertaining. I was wondering why there were so many negative comments about him but most of them are for other courses. I really recommend taking him for Principles II.

If you want to successfully pass this class, you'll learn out of the textbook. Only good thing about this class is that there was not a lot of homework.

Well where do I begin. Mike Marshall is a horrendous professor. Makes ungodly long Power Points, and does not review them in order. He will jump from page 1 to page 42 back to page 7. I was always lost. Test questions were extremely vague and never had a definitive answer. Always got off topic trying to be funny, talking in an irritating, joking voice. Always made religious jokes that were not at all funny. Once insulted a girl by calling her stupid because she misunderstood his unclear lecture. []

I took this class my first semester of college and absolutely hated it. I am usually not a fan of science, but I thought I would still do well. I did terribly. Everything is heavily based on exams. I do not remember ever doing anything outside of the class for assignments except studying. He makes jokes that aren't funny at all and gets very off topic to the point that you can't figure out the point of the lecture. He was always all over the place with his powerpoints and never followed the syllabus which made it hard to read for the class.

Dr. Marshall.. where do I even begin?
His classes- sooo LONG AND BORING! I honestly fell asleep during all the classes after the first 3 weeks. All he does is pass a sign-in sheet for attendance and then jumps right into it. What is it? A LONGGGG LONG BORING powerpoint in which he goes from slide number 3 then 17 then 8 then 1 then back to 17 then 18, 19, 20, then 34 then 3, ugggghhh too much!
Personality- []he makes crude jokes and gives his opinions for topics that don't even have to do with bio and I just didnt like him.
Grades/tests- his grades are based on the 3 tests that we take. The tests have NOTHING to do with the powerpoints that he has so needless to say, the highest grade on a test that I got was a 72 and I was proud of that (not really, but for the class yes). We only take 3 tests and then he drops the lowest and then averages it in to your final. I swear, I must have gotten 100% on the final because I ended up with a C in the class when my semester average was a 65%.
Just beware of him because I just may be one of those people who dont mesh well with his personality. I thought bio was going to be a breeze especially since it was BASIC BIOLOGY 101.! I know it's wrong to compare but in high school I got a 98% in bio.. so something's wrong here.. and it ain't me. SMH AT THIS CLASS AND TEACHER!!

He passed around a sheet and gave credit for attendance but everyone just signed their friends names anyway. I would not take Dr. Marshall again and would not suggest taking him.

I loved biology in high school...then college came around and I absolutely hate it. Dr. Marshall... His class couldn't get any more boring if he tried. He says the dumbest jokes ever and hums the mario theme song all the time. His notes are really hard to follow and sitting in his class is a waste of time because you pretty much have to teach yourself everything. He gives you a study guide and bonus questions for the tests. His tests are pretty hard and too long and all multiple choice. If you want to teach yourself bio go ahead and take the class. I really would advise you to take a different prof.

If I hadn't been assigned to take Dr. Marshall's course, I definitely wouldn't. Avoid taking this professor. He will not respond to e-mails, rarely has office hours, and NEVER follows the syllabus. This man is extremely scatter-brained... he gets off on tangents so quickly, you'll wonder how it even relates to biology! He constantly says in his class, "if you're not confused, you're not paying attention." "if you leave here and think you understood, you're probably wrong." Don't get me wrong, this man definitely knows his stuff. However, I am not a bio major and I don't care to learn about such intricate details. You'd think he was teaching a classroom of 4th year medical students. He always claims he'll post information you need to know for tests on his personal website the weekend before. He posted it Monday morning for his M/W class! I taught myself all of the information for the class, studying 14/15 hours prior to tests. I would have been just as well never showing up. But, if you go to 75% of his classes he'll boost your grade! (you'll need it!)

I liked Biology in High School, then I came to college and Marshall made everything confusing. Nothing was familiar from previous Bio classes. For one, he does not give good notes. He writes words on the Board with little to no explanation, Haha he gives extra credit which is ridiculous because it's not even about stuff read in class which makes it hard. The test are nothing like the notes in class because what notes, there are none. Really I would not tell anyone to take this class.

Ok....where to begin. He is a very odd little man who tries to be funny, but isn't. It actually is more amusing to watch him try to be funny. The class was a bore. He would give you a study guide or say "Just the lecture notes...not the book" but...DO NOT TRUST HIM! Study everything you have. Be prepared to teach yourself from the book because his lectures didn't make sense half the time. We had to do a paper and he actually never handed it back. I still don't know my grade to this day. He showed some pretty interesting movies though...I'll give him that. I showed up every class, gave it my best effort and got a B, so...Don't expect an easy A from Marshall. Avoid.

Dr. Marshall is absolutely the worst professor I've ever had. As a bio major, sitting in lecture, I should not keep hearing "If you're not confused, you're not paying attention". Why the heck would I want to be confused?? His office hours are a joke. He's very forgetful, if you make an appointment with him he'll forget, or he just won't be there half the time during his office hours. I transferred to a private school where I actually do well on exams because the professors ACTUALLY TEACH and make SURE that you understand what's going on. If you have a choice. Take Dr. Hurd. Wonderful man.

Where do I begin. Dr. Marshall is the worst professor ever. He doesn't even teach the material, so how does he expect his class to do well on the tests. He rambles on about nothing for almost the entire class period, and then when he decides that he hasn't taught all of the material, he schedules evening classes to "make up for what he missed". Also, the guy thinks that he is the funniest person in the world, and he always makes jokes that half the time don't even make sense. I remember one day he talked for 10 minutes about how he ordered chinese food and was missing an egg roll. His tests are basically impossible, and he grades extremely hard on lab reports. Marshall grades things extremely slow, so it is always difficult to know what your actual grade is. Once, on an exam day before spring break, he walked into the class 14 minutes late and we still had to take the exam. Basically, if you want to have a chance at getting a good grade in Principles II, then do not take Dr. Marshall.

He gives you notes and the questions on the tests are sort of in between the lines sort of tests. You have to be able to explain your notes in sort of a lecture form to do good on the tests. The tests are very factual. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE!!. He busted about 5 people in my class, and he was pissed off.

I'll try to make this short, even though I could write an entire book consisting of reasons why Dr. Marshall is the worst professor at Shippensburg. For starters, he is condescending and rude. He states that he is open to hear opinions but he will shoot your opinion down (especially if it is related to religion). He assigned writing assignments throughout the semester, and informed us that he would hand the first one back shortly after we turned it in, so we could make sure we were correctly completing the assignments. This was mid-semester. He handed the first assignment back the LAST DAY OF CLASS so we had to bust our asses with the rest of the assignments. He is late to class a lot, and he will keep you late, EVERY DAY. He always gives take-home tests and study guides much later than he says. Also, he will give you a some points back on a test, and come back the next class and take some away. His tests are much harder than they should be, and he realizes this, yet he does nothing about it. Stay away from this professor, at all costs.

Rambles like a senile old man. I recorded this man and wrote down word for word all the main points of his lecture. Got the test and I wanted to beat the guy up. I didn't but the point is that he will tell you, "ok this is a cell and here are the parts." One would next guess that the test questions would be on the parts of the cell. Hell no. He will ask you a question that requires you to stand on your head, spin around, and look in a mirror to get the answer. Made a class soooo very much more difficult than it should be. He probably gets off at having a 66% average for the class.

Marshall's class was kind of bad. His lack of organizational skills was annoying and his teaching was all over the place. Most of what he talked about was never on the test, and the study guides weren't helpful at all. His tests consisted of very specific questions on material from the book that no one would ever know, and the take home part was near impossible as well. He insisted on e-mailing all of the assignments but never sent them when he said he would. He was always late with everything and we didn't receive the study guide/take home test for the final until the day before we had to take it. HOWEVER, one time I missed some questions on one of his tests and he went out of his way to contact me so I could finish them, which was pretty nice of him. I think he is a good guy, he just needs to get his sh*t together.

His notes are all over the place and his handwriting is horrible ( he refuses to use technology...so prepare to try and make out chalk smudged chicken scratch). Oh and I hope you like "duh da da da da and that's the truth" every 5 mins because that is all he knows how to stay. Oh and stay out of his office I hear it looks like a bomb went off... explains his organization skills once again. Stay away.

Dr. Marshall is a nice guy, but his class is not enjoyable. He lectures off the top of his head and is incredibly hard to follow. His tests are impossible, youre better off at guessing the questions. Occasionally he'll give a study guide in which you have to look up all the information yourself, and it wont be in the book. I have never left a class understanding a word of what he said, even though I took advanced Biology in highschool. He gets off topic quickly, and when he is covering difficult material, he zooms though it. He cracks jokes about making his class as confusing as possible, and to tell you the truth, he does a great job. If you want to pass this class, youre going to need to study your butt off on your own, and deal with the sarcasm. I absolutely hated his class, and will be avoiding him in the years till I graduate. Save yourself the stress and take a GOOD professor.

Marshall is one of those fine professors who has the attitude,Ē Well I have my doctorate and you don't so tough sh*t." When I think about Marshall's lectures, I think about how he spent 3 or 4 on a soap box complaining about the evolution vs. intelligent design fight in high schools. He must have an attention problem because he would spend 15 or so minutes off on a tangent unrelated to the material. The man was horribly unorganized. We would get labs back months after we turned them in. One of the earlier labs we did I didnít get back until the last week of school! You need those labs back to prevent making similar mistakes on future labs. If you are all about immediate feedback then forget this prof. Oh and speaking of the feedback he does give, itís condescending and snide, written in handwriting only he can fully decipher. There was little to no extra credit. Even his position as an advisor he fails to take seriously. He's not interested in that responsibility at all. If you like professors on an ego trip, Marshall is for you.

Dr. Marshall is a JOKE! He spent an entire class talking about the potato. COME ON! We werent even learning about anything that had to do with vegtables or anything of that nature!! I seriously think he got his degree at some fake school somewhere. He knows a lot (kind of) but because he is so unorganized about it, you get lost. POE is suppose to be an EASY A..but not in the case of my class. We all just stare blankly waiting for the hour and fifteen minute session of hell to be over. His tests are sh*t because he gives you a study guide (which you have to search out the answers for and dont even think about using ur notebook, there wont be anything from his lectures in there) too bad the study guide questions are non-existent on the test. Seriously, I could go on about this guy forever, but I dont feel like even thinking about that piece of sh*t anymore...good luck to those of you who have him, and if you dont have him..NEVER take him...

Dr. Marshall is very confusing, you often do not understand what he is saying in class and he proceeds much too quickly. He gives four tests along with some projects. I find him very annoying and leave class not understanding a single thing. I often have to go to the Learning Center for them to reteach the stuff so I have some grasp on it.His sense of humor is dry and he tells us that he is trying to challenge us and does not want to insult us with easy stuff.

Dr. Marshall constantly cracks jokes which are funny for maybe the first two weeks, but he uses them repeatedly every class at least 5 times. He gets mad if you don't understand something but teaches by drawing cartoon pick up trucks on the board. He did set up study sessions but failed to attend any of them. Overall, his classes were pointless to attend, and if you want to do well in this class, expect to spend hours studying the book and at the learning center.

Dr. Marshall is one of the hardest classes I have had to take this semester. His study guides are inconsistent with the tests and he waits until the day before the test to actually give it to you. Plus he is almost always talking during test taking time. He is not a mean guy, but is not a very effective professor. Also, the tests are m/c but are very tricky. So if you have to take him GOOD LUCK and GOD BLESS!!!!!

He wouldn't be my last choice, but definitely not my first. Sometimes it's hard to concentrate because of his goofing around (which gets really old.) He's never prepared for lab and his tests can be bad. On a whole, a bit of a pain.

Well, I can only say that this class could be worse. I'm not a huge fan of biology, but he made the class somewhat interesting. If you take all the notes he gives during class you'll do just fine. I wouldn't suggest buying the textbook because I didn't use mine once. Waste of money. He comes to class late pretty often, so don't be surprised if he's not there for the first 5 to 10 minutes of class. The latest he ever was was probably 15 minutes. If you take notes and go to most of the classes you should do fine on his tests. Know your terms! The final is really hard, so make sure you at least study a couple hours for this one if you need a good grade on it to do well. Also, you'll be writing a 5 page paper which you might not get back for quite a long time. He takes awhile to grade. (And he said he NEVER gives 100's on the paper, so don't worry if you don't get 100% on it).

Dr. Marshall...where to begin...I guess, he is a nice guy. He tries far too hard to be funny, most of the quips he delivers in class are funny, but they are either too quiet to hear or in such close succession that they loose their humor after a while. I think he enjoys the subject, I think he likes it, but I think he is too opinionated to teach it objectively. His tests are a joke...they are way too hard for a class that he claims "shouldn't be too hard for non-majors". The information, for those who intend to take him, is usually an off-hand note he makes in class or can be found in the captions of photos, not in the bulk of the text.

He comes off really harsh, but he's a big softy. He seems to want to help anyway he can, he's just so ADD that he can't get his thoughts together a lot. He knows what he's talking about but he doesn't really connect anything. All his tests are from the book pretty much and he gives you a take home test for half of the test, so that makes it nice. Notes in his class don't help a lot, but if you read the book and listen to what he says you pretty much can be okay. He's just hard to follow, but he's funny.

When it comes to knowing the material, Marshal def. does. Once you get past his sarcasm he is a good teacher. We had a few tests which were a little difficult, though he usually curves them some. The final is mostly new information, though it has a few questions from previous chapters. You have some short papers to do, and it takes him a year to get them back to you, and he grades them pretty rough. He is def. a straightforward guy, but if you really want to learn biology then take him.

If you take Prof. Marshall you will find out that he's a very funny man. I really enjoyed being in his classes because he always made them interesting but sometimes they could be very boring and slow. He gives notes but you have to write down what you think is good and what isn't relevant. Also you are supposed to do a writing assignment every week. Well by the 4th week he stopped b/c he promised to hand back our other assignments which he really never got around to so that didn't help our grade much b/c he was always forgetful in grading homework. It isn't hard homework but annoying to do. His tests are easy if you study, something I maybe should have done. They are m/c and t/f. Not bad right now study for that b/c they are very tricky. You also have some extra credit to help you bring your grade up....that's what helped me pass thank god. Oh yeah and if you don't like a teacher talking during your tests do not take Marshall...he whistles and talks to himself while you are trying to concentrate....but other than that funny man but a little obnoxious and rude....

He knows his stuff... he's funny in class which doesn't make it too boring but still pretty boring. You have to study for this class. Weekly quizzes that aren't that easy but alright if you study. He has a tendency to yell at you for not studying or answering questions but still a decent prof.

Dr. Marshall comes off as a really easy-going guy, however his quizzess and tests are difficult. Its also hard to distingish what information is relevant. His notes are very confusing, but a nice guy. There are better choices than this prof.

Dr. Marshall is a nice man but i find his class difficult. He jokes around all the time and sometimes it gets old. He is always there to help you though, don't be afraid to ask. He holds study sessions before tests and gives a study sheet. The test are hard though, true false and multiple choice. There is usually a quiz at the end of the week and they are essay. If you want a funny professor take him but if not you might want to look somewhere else!
