This class was incredible, It required little to no work on my part. Mathis lectured and I wrote notes. The notes were easy to follow and the tests were easy. Like mind numbingly easy. Many people have problems with the material, but it's a great deal of common sense and a little bit of arithmetic. Mathis is very laid back and will talk to you about anything related to the material and if you need to talk to him he's either in his office or smoking out back of MCT. Overall a very interesting and unique prof.

Dr. Mathis is totally sweet. Well, except for the fact that he smells like coffee & cigarette smoke, but he's a really cool guy. He's always in a good mood even when no one shows up for class. Basically if you show up to class, take notes, and study a little bit before the exams you'll do fine. The way a gen ed should be. You have 3 exams including the final, no homework, no quizzes, no class attendance. Going to class does matter though. I saved myself over $100 by not getting the book & just paying attention in class. Really easy & I encourage you to take him.

He really takes the time to go over the material and explain how the graphs are formed. If you have any questions on it ask and he will spend more than enough time to make sure everyone is caught up. His tests aren't hard but aren't extremely easy either. Pay attention and go to class and I cant see anyone failing. He's definitely a smart guy and knows his stuff.

Mathis is a crazy genius who walks into class with a cup of coffee and a piece of chalk and goes to town. He is usually late to class because he is out smoking and always lets class out early. Attendance is not required and he is a smart man. However, it is nearly impossible to study for the exams because the questions don't come from lectures and the book is not that helpful for the exam either. There are 3 tests and he usually gives a 5 point curve on top of the fact that an 85% and up is an A. He is never in his office when he says he will be and if you need help understanding forget it.

Dr. Mathis at first comes off as a little weird, but after a little while you learn to find just as welcome as any other professor's humor. Econ is NOT an easy subject for me. I completely don't understand it at all; its like a foreign language to me. But somehow, even skipping as many classes as I did, Dr. Mathis helped me get the best econ grade I ever received. Some of his lectures were a bit confusing, but he never stopped giving us options (office hours, tutors, ect) on how we could understand better. I sort of wish we'd had homework, or something I could have used so as not to fully rely on test grades to make good marks, but this guy got me a B- in econ without me having been there many class periods... THAT'S a good teacher.

Mathis is a GREAT prof.. he was obviously a huge hippie back in his day and his idiosyncrasies make you actually want to go to this guy's class, but the problem is attendance is OPTIONAL so you usually end up not going which will bite you in the ass in the end.. lesson being go to class.
Grading system is sweet.. you only have 3 tests, an A is a 100-85, B is a 84-75, etc.. so it is a pretty easy class, he is a great prof who is always there.. I just wish I wouldn't have skipped so many times, but what are you going to do it was at 8 AM.

Dr. Mathis is pretty funny. He's kind of comical to take for a class. His class is not the easiest, but he tries his hardest to help you out. I would suggest taking him...from what I've heard I believe he's a lot easier than other econ professors.

Lets get one thing straight, Mathis is the tightest prof at Ship. Its obvious he was a huge hippy, and he really relates to students. His tests are easy and class doesnt have homework. Any effort at all will get an A or a B

I have had a couple classes with this guy and it's still the same. His tests come from the lectures and if not he'll tell you where to look in the book. No paper, presentation or any other extra BS just 3 tests which aren't that hard. Take Mathis for your economic needs

Dr. Mathis is a great professor and probably the best in the econ dept. If you go to class you will learn quite a bit and the best part is, he makes it enjoyable!! The tests are very straightforward and with a bit of studying its easy to pull out at least a B. Definitely try to take Mathis if his classes don't close too fast!!!

Other than his obsession with running his hands through his hair as well as getting chalk everywhere during his lecture this is your best bet for econ. Don't ever take Bastin if Mathis is available!!!!! Tests aren't that bad as long as you pay attetion and study your notes. The book is only worth buying if you plan on missing class because since he wrote it the lectures are about the same.

Dr.Mathis was a good teacher. He will refer to cracking open a cold one alot as well as other jokes which provides humor for a dry economics class. His humor makes the class interesting. He only gave out three non cumulative tests (including the final). Overall, if you pay attention in his class and study the material, you should not have much trouble getting a good grade. May the force be with you.

Dr. Mathis along with Dr. Posatko are the best econ teachers at Ship. If you understand econ or have at least a remote interest in it you will like him. You only take 3 tests and thats your grade. The grading scale is 85 -100 is an A. So thats pretty good. He doesnt care if you come to his class at all. He is also one of the nicests and most interesting guys around. All around he's a good chap. I recomend him

Mathis knows his stuff, bottom line. For the material he does the best he can with it and is truely one of the brightest teachers I've had here at Ship. Don't buy the text book cause he wrote it and he covers his own stuff. 3 Tests, thats it, no attendence. Study though

Take this Professor!!! He is awesome. Only 2 midterms and the final. And the final is only on the last 1/3 of the class. He keeps class fun and if you learn the notes and try the review problems for the chapter you'll get an A no problem! Don't let the fact that he wrote the textbook scare you because you hardly use the book at all.

I woudl reccomend Dr. Mathis, he keeps his lecures interesting. His tests are somewhat difficult, and Don't bother buying the book, I didn't even open it once during the entire semester. The tests are taken straight from the notes. There are 3 tests, no make ups, no homework, no quizzes, no extra credit. So if you screw up one of the tests, you better do well on the other 2. Overall, he is a good professor, however, Take Dr. Kosienski if you have the chance .

Ok, let's begin with the good part. The guy himself is alright. He is usually a minute or two late for class, but I guess that's alright. He is also a very nice guy, and on occasion tries to make jokes and stuff. BUT, the class is based on lecture every day - nothing hands-on. You MUST read your book, and come to every class and take good notes to understand it all and get a good grade. He only has three big tests in the class. That is ALL you are graded on, meaning fail the test, fail the class. I would recommend looking into other prof's.

This class was okay. He's a pretty weird guy; I'm sure that anyone would agree. Overall, he's pretty nice and his grading curve is sweet, but if you don't like lectures don't take him. There's only 3 grades for the semester: the first exam, your midterm, and your final. I guess if you have a pretty decent understanding for economics, you'll be fine, but if you're no good at it, don't take him, you probably will not do too well.

This was by far the WORST class I have ever taken in my life. Obviously economics is not my subject and I have never taken a econ class before but this was the most ridiculous class ever!!! Yeah there is no homework but it is like taking a class with the announcer for the matchbox cars!! He flies through material because he understands it and has a grading scale that is so curved that yeah if you guess on all the multiple choice questions and fail you still get a C which is what I did. Then he is never around when you want help and calling and leaving messages doesnt help either. But oh well thats over and I am running from economics classes for now on too.

This man is a cool guy, but awful professor. His lectures virtually have no structure or outline to them at all. He pretty much comes to class sits on the desk and talks very quickly about information no one has ever heard about before. There is no homework, he never takes attendance, there is no review guide for tests, there are only three or four tests which makes up your grade. So unless you can learn by hearing something and occasionally reading chicken scratch on the board take another professor!

Dr. Mathis is an interesting guy. I think hes the easiest prof. in the Econ dept. but the class is still really hard. He did a terrible job at explaining the equations for the class, and he rambles a lot. Hes impossible to follow, you cant read his hand writing, and theres only three grades which are all tests, including the final. I learned absolutely nothing from this guy. The only reason I passed, and the only good thing about him, is that he curves the grades so much. But I would still take him cause hes the best prof. for this class that there is.
