Calc is tough no doubt, but she is always available for extra help and she really does help. If you just put a little effort into the class it is pretty easy for a calc class. She gives short quizzes every week but they aren't too bad and they help you keep up with the information. She has three tests and a final but if you do well on the final it can replace a test score.

Class was ok. The work isn't that hard, just study before each exam and quiz. She posts notes on blackboard. She presents the information in a easy to learn way. Has a few problems from each section using online at mymathlab. Don't bother to buy the book - its mostly useless and its on the website. Project in the end is easy, final wasn't that bad either. It is a 4 credit class so be prepared to work.

Professor McGivney is a nice lady. Teaches the material thoroughly and answers any questions you have. The classes are kinda boring because she just teaches off powerpoints. I thought the class was relatively easy - perhaps because I took statistics in high school. She's not a very harsh grader; there's no written homework, just online problems that you can do over and over till you get 100%; the tests are easier than the online homework; and there's one group project. I actually think my high school statistics class was harder than this, haha, but I still noticed people around me not doing so well. But if you want to do fairly well in this class, I'd take her. She's not as bad as people make her out to be.

She is a very nice professor. She is very likable and and tries her best to get students involved. I am not very strong in math but found this class doable. There are 3 tests, and 1 final. Also, she gives TMQs a few times a week (short 2 min. questions) You also have to complete 1 group presentation.

If you would like a great professor who truly cares about students grades, she is one you should take. Her tests are tough, but they are the same type of material from the weekly quizzes. Also, if you have questions about a homework assignment, just ask her.

Dr. McGivney is an awesome Calc prof, but the content that she gives on her quizzes and exams are a bit difficult to comprehend. It is highly recommended that you do the homework and the worksheets, and always ask questions if you are stuck on anything. If you do incredible on the homework, you'll be fine for the course. Sometimes, she has a tendency to make a small math error and everyone catches it for her, but other than that, she's a decent prof. She gives excellent definitions and shows proofs of theorems a heck of a lot better than other math teachers. Highly suggested if you want to learn calculus in the simplest manner.

I had Prof McGivney for Discrete Math. That course is one of two things to everyone... really easy or really hard. I found it to be hard. Going to the SI Sessions helped alot. I think I got such a low grade in the class because I messed up the final.

While a bit scatterbrained, she's a very thurough and helpful prof. Pay attention during her lectures because she can whiz quickly through the material. She gives announced quizzes once a week which contain questions directly from the homework problems she assigns (most of which are not graded). Her tests are straight forward as long as you've studied the material and paid attention in class.

Dr. McGivney is a really good teacher. She doesn't move too quickly and she always answers her students questions as best she can. She is always available during her office hours (at least when I went to them) and she is always willing to help her students. Her tests are challenging sometimes, but if you do your homework and go to class then you should do well. I would definitely recommend Dr. McGivney to other students, she is a very good teacher and I will take her for as many math courses as I can.

Dr. McGivney is a great prof for Discrete Math, and probably any math out there. She not only moves at a reasonable pace, but she also will stop and take the time to help you if you are having trouble understanding a concept. She relates her lesson very well with real life examples (baseball games, etc.) Very nice too, and she will remember you outside the classroom.

I noticed a lot of El Ed (I will avoid making comments on that group) and Comp Scis in the negative department. She is an awesome teacher who knows her stuff. So what if she makes a mistake here or there in calculations, everyone does and correct her, she will laugh and thank you. She is a fair grader who uses the HW and quizzes to prepare you for the tests. She is really nice and very willing to help and wants you to succeed.

Dr. McGivney is one of my favorite professors that I have had at Ship. She makes the material easy to understand and is always available and willing to help if you have any questions. Tests are not hard as long as you do your homework. If you are just looking for an easy class where you don't have to do any work, then don't take her, because she really cares that her students get the most out of her class. On the other hand, if you are looking to actually learn something, then she is definately the way to go.

I truly believe that if you do the homework and go to her for help if you need it you will do fine. All the people with the negative comments needs to work a little harder. If you have been in college for a while you should know you need to do the work assigned. SHE DOES NOT COME OUT OF THE BLUE WITH HER QUESTIONS. Every question that is given on a test comes from the notes you will receive by going to class or by doing the homework. If you do the work you will be fine.

Dr. McGivney is a great professor...she is always willing to help, but this is college you have to do work to get by in her class. Don't listen to the other comments, if you really want to learn and you are at college for the true reason of being here then she is a great professor. If you are in college to party everynight and don't go to class, then don't take her, it will leave the seats open for people who really care.

She gives a lot of homework, but the test are like the homework. She gives labs so you know how to use the software. The labs are set up so that you are understanding the theories being taught in class by proving them yourself. If you all the work the class becomes easy, I never studied and only got A- beause I forgot to turn in a writing assignment. If you do the work it's an easy A.

She is a very nice professor who is more than willing to help however she can. I didn't find her to be the best instructor which made her classes a little more difficult than they should have been. But all in all, she's an ok professor. I took her twice and would take her again. If you take her, be ready to do your homework!

I had taken statistics in high school and had an excellent teacher and I believe I would have gotten a C had I not known a majority of the material already. McGivney can be an effective teacher in class and gives various applets online that will benefit your learning and that is something I cannot take away from her. On the opposite side of the coin, she is not an easy teacher. I averaged a high A for all exams but never reached 100% due to her tedious search through exams for the smallest mistake. I've been deducted points for things as simple as merely putting answers into decimals rather than fractions. She grades all of her homework for correctness and does the same thing as her exams. She also has you do projects including stat data she gives you.. Personally, I believe her class is very tedious and expects you to do large amounts of work and understand the material without any complications. The worst part is her exams make up roughly 75% of her course and various studies, DAILY homework, and BI-DAILY online homework makes up the rest. She expects a lot from her class whereas outside of her class, she has emailed us on several occasions to let us know her HALF HOUR OF AVAILABILITY for the week. I walked away with an A and a strong dislike for this professor, please tread lightly and be careful when taking this professor. I would recommend other professors that will give you more time, will work with you, and will give you notecards so you don't need to memorize equations (which she does not). Keep your head up and try your best.

[] If you want a professor who will grade you to fail, take McGivney. I had questions on a test before she gave and I found that many errors she made she had no legitimate reason as to why she marked them wrong, and that my grade should've been almost 25% better. McGivney still thinks her students are in elementary school and teaches them like they're mentally incapable of doing her pointless work. Homework is a plus to see if you're understanding the material, yet she never goes over the homework, so in turn you never know if you're actually doing the work right or not. I'd say stay away at all costs from McGivney unless you just want to waste time and money.

This professor cannot teach for the life of her. Heck, she can barely get her answers right without help from the class. I didn't know that you could buy degrees in Mathematics from Wal*Mart. Avoid her at all costs if you want a decent GPA. Quizzes are almost everyday and her tests are a nightmare. Ask anyone, and they agree... STEER CLEAR!

She is the worst most schizophrenic teacher I Think I've ever had. She asks her students for the answers half the time because I think she doesn't know them. If you want to waste your time doing work in a workbook with friends that you could be doing outside of class then take her. She never really teaches and try keeping a notebook because she pulls random skills out of nowhere. That's a Joke..but if you want a good laugh at how schizo she really is...then by all means take her!

Well, she teaches the material fairly well... I generally understood what she was saying. But she runs the class like an elemetary teacher. She takes attendance every day, gives you daily homework, collects and grades it, gives you ridiculous labs all the time, grades your tests like she WANTS you to fail... I felt like a kid again in her class. If you're one of those people who goes to every class every day all year, and you don't mind a lot of busywork, then she's alright, cause she teaches the subject faily well. But otherwise... avoid her.

This is kind of iffy. If you're one of those people who enjoys correcting your proffesor the entire class on all the mistakes they make during calculations, then taking McGivney is the way to go. Also, if you enjoyed k-12 and all the busy bullshit work you had to do, then you'll also enjoy this class. If you want to do well and learn something, I'd go for someone else, like Jones or Nordai.

Professor McGivney's discrete class was pretty tough. She is a pretty good teacher, she relays concepts well, gives enough work that your grade is not compromized of a few mere tests and quizzes, and is very approachable. The subject matter for the course (Discrete) is pretty tough, and if you dont ask questions she'll fly through the material (if you ask questions, she'll spend enough time to help you understand it). Only thing I did not like was having to attend a math seminar outside of class, and that homework was not worth any points to your grade. []

Dr. McGivney is a sweet lady, and she's always willing to help. HOWEVER, Im not exactly crazy about her teaching style. In Intro to Stats, she puts you in groups and the group pretty much teaches you Statistics. That just doesnt turn me on. Plus she assigns homework and we have quizzes on it, but we never actually GO OVER the homework to know if we are doing it right! It can get kinda frustrating. But if you learn better from your peers, and are a math prodigy, go for it!

Dr. McGivney does slip up in class and is corrected by students, but she's not an awful teacher. You do group work a lot and there are a lot of formulas and symbols to know, but you can write them down on a notecard for the tests. Her coming into class with that must-have cup of coffee at 8am is NOT a bad way to start the day... ;)
