I am not an amazing math student, especially not when it comes to harder math subjects like calculus. She was a great professor. She did move a little quickly, but she would always take time to thoroughly go through any questions that students had to explain and make sure we grasped it. Her tests and quizzes were a little difficult, but practice makes perfect. All her assignments are on d2l. She's a quirky math nerd and I absolutely loved her class!

If you are fairly good at math, by all means take her class. She is very effective if you can grasp math fast. If you are not a good math student and require time to better understand the math problems, you may want to reconsider. She usually does not allow you to use a graphing calculator on exams or quizzes but she does teach you how to do the problem without a calculator. The work is easy as long as you can grasp math but she does move a little fast through the material to cover everything in a reasonable time. I am good at math so I had no trouble but many in my class struggled. She is really nice and if you need any help, she is very willing to help you.

I'll admit, Dr. McNichols' classes can be a little tough sometimes. She moves rather quickly and her tests are quite difficult. But even with that, I feel like I learned a great deal from Dr. McNichols and she's certainly one of the nicest professors I've ever had. She truly cares for her students and will do everything she can to help them succeed. She'll help you in a heartbeat if you have a problem and she even makes an effort to get to know her students. If you get a chance, I'd really recommend taking Dr. McNichols.

Dr. McNichols was a pretty good professor. She seriously writes everything on the board. She hands out notes and rewrites everything that is on the notes on the board. Usually the problems she uses to teach are an easier level than the ones she asks you to do for homework. She gives 3 or 4 tests. She always had assessment days on Wednesday since we had a Mon., Wed., Fri. class. So she would give quizzes on the weeks that we didn't have tests. I didn't really find the course too difficult because I had taken Calc in high school. She is willing to help.

I liked her as a person. She was nice, but her tests and quizzes were hard and they hurt my grade the most. I wish she would have had some graded homework because it would have helped me. I think if you are not very strong at math, like me, then I recommend taking another teacher.

I said the good, bad and the ugly because thats what you are going to get in her class. She is a great Prof. She always helps you out when you go to her for help even when she is busy. She also knows how to teach. The only problem is that, you can never use a calculator. In high school, I took this course and I got A's throughout the whole year using a calculator. But in her class since we can't use a calculator, that downgraded me from an A to a B. But anyway, overall, she is good. And If I had to rate her, I will give her a B not just because I got a B in her class but that's how I feel about her.

Dr. McNichols is one of the best math professors I have had yet. She teaches well and has lots of visual aids she brings with her to classes to help visualize all the formulas and new information. I have understood almost everything she has taught and if you do not understand she is in her office constantly. During her classes you can take notes along with her on the board but she also gives out notes which are awesome because you can just follow along without worrying about struggling to write down everything and miss what she's teaching. Although, her tests and quizzes are very hard, but if you do all the homework she assigns and put some effort into actually preparing and studying for the exams you will do fine. If you're a math major/minor I highly recommend taking her.

This class was hard but I couldn't have asked for a better professor than Dr. McNichols. She is very interesting but that doesn't stop her from being good. To do well in her class you have to keep up with the homework she assigns. If you study her notes and do the homework you'll be fine. But that's the thing... no one wants to do homework and thats why people fail. She goes a little fast with her notes but after she is done with class, she gives you her notes! So I would write some notes down but make sure you just pay attention in class then study the notes later. You will learn if you take her. Just do what a student should do and do the homework and you'll get an A. Ask questions too!

Naturally, I'm not that good at complex math. But since I went to every class and actually listened to her I did fine. You must attend class on a regular basis and be able to digest everything that she goes over, even if it is a sh*tload of information. I can see why many people would not like her teaching style, but the class is relatively simple if you are a competent student.

She is really nice, explains stuff okay. Throws curveballs on all her tests and exams. Most of the time she will take the hardest problems out of whatever section. I enjoyed the class, but not the subject matter. This class will blindside you if you are slacking even slightly. I thought for the longest time I was doing well, I was not.

Dr. McNichols is highly dynamic and comprehensive in her lectures -- exams are fair. Truly receptive to student questions -- helpful with problems you have, whether it was an irresponsible question ("what's the hw?") or a difficult one. My only concern with Intro to Stats was the mandatory attendance. I need to just sit in a room and read over the handouts myself to understand the material as I have never been a "good" listener. I think the key to making the most of lecture is staying focused while listening. For instance, during lecture, 2 problems may be solved in a span of ~30 minutes. If your mind starts to wander off early on, you will not be able to effectively follow along in lecture. Additionally, I appreciated and still remember the problem sets consisting of real life scenarios. Wish I took the class online... or even better, I should have sat in the front row and signed up for a course which met 3X/wk versus 2! hehe

Yes, this class is hard. Yes, this class requires a good amount of work. Yes, there are weekly quizzes. Again, yes, this class is hard. So why the positive review? I feel Dr. McNichols did an excellent job teaching the subject. She gives you the notes so that you can actually pay attention during class and ask questions and be involved with the material that you are LEARNING -- instead of scrambling to copy everything she is writing on the board. You CANNOT FALL BEHIND or you are screwed. The quizzes come right from the homework, so keep up with it, and go to her office if you need help -- she is very willing to help and wants you to LEARN. Some other tips: make flashcards for all the definitions and theorems because you will have to apply those concepts on tests/quizzes or simply state the definition/theorem in a fill-in-the-blank format. You're not going to get out early in this class, her lesson plans are to the "T" and flow smoothly and painlessly -- although it does feel the class moves rather slow since you're not writing (or at least I didn't) anything down. Lastly, be prepared to set aside 2-5 hours a week for this course, but be prepared to learn and fully understand everything she has taught!

This class was difficult for me because of my previous math experiances. If you do not have a good background with math then I do not recommend this teacher, however, she is always there to help you out with questions durring her office hours. I wish I had done better in the class, I felt that the tests and quizzes were difficult but studying the homework will greatly benefit your grade. It helps in any class to seek help from the prof because it lets him or her know that you are interested and concerned with your grades. In my case I took every opportunity possible to visit her office hours and it helped me pass the class in the end.

Diane I think is a really great professor that no one gives any credit to. The class in general is hard. Stats is stats and it seems like everyone has to take it, no way of getting around. I do recomend though that if you didn't have it in high school to wait and take it later in your college years. I am a junior who is pretty good with math, and I still thought the course was hard. McNichols is a great teacher though. She writes everything on the board, and I mean everything so you don't go home at night thinking now what was that step again or how did she do that problem. She is always around during her office hours too. One time she had to cancel them, but the next time she had office hours, they were actually doubled in length. If you have to take a Prof., take her. She is a great teacher, it is just the stats part that is hard. Many people giver her a negative response, but really if you do the work and show effort in the class you will be fine. I think that was some of the other's people's problems. That is a great way to fail the class, by not doing the work. Just a word of the wise. The homework problems do show up on the quizes. So do them right for homework and you are fine for the quiz.

Listen everyone, I was a highschool drop-out who was terrified of math. Anyone who gets a bad grade in her class is either very, very, very bad in math, or just plain lazy. If you take notes and utilize her office hours you will make the grade. She respects students who try to understand and do the HW. I missed lots of classes too, but I always called her to find out the HW and if I had questions I would go in and meet with her. If a highschool drop out who is an Art major can get an A- in her class then anyone can. She gets way too much crap from lazy students who are used to ship profs giving huge curves becaue 3/4 of the class is lazy and doesn't do the hw. In the end she gets the undeserved blame. If you want a breeze math class, do her and you a favor and don't take her. If you came to school to actually learn then you'll love her, and she'll appreciate knowing that there are still a few good students.

...like I did. Dr. McNichols is another prof who kows and loves her subject material. She gives a ton of homework, but the quizzes are exactly taken from it, and she hands out all the notes. So why a D? Because I'm lazy. Once you start falling behind on the homework, it's hard to catch up, and nothing sucks worse than seeing a problem on a quiz that you recognize, but still can't answer. I probably could have done a lot better, but I slacked off. She tried to save our grades towards the end, giving out huge point homework assignments, but it was too late. That said, she grades extremely tightly, and you lose points easily for cosmetic mistakes. I lost points on a test for not having my hypothesis in the correct notation. Overall, I gotta say that the course wasn't bad, just a lot to keep up with.

She is an excellent professor! But if you are looking to get through a class with minimal effort, do not take her. She sets up her classes so that you have to do all of the lengthy homework and study for each exam just to get through the course. This class was very hard, but I can tell that she teaches the same way the the rest of her classes. If want to know your subject a year after you take the class, take her. She is always available to help with work. She has even helped me with work for other projects. She is just a nice lady and a great professor!

Dr. McNichols starts the semester leaving you questioning whether or not you'll go crazy before you get through the class. however, after the first few classes you realize that she is just a highly dynamic and energetic prof. she has a lot of energy and brings that side to her classes making it easy to get through. she is a finicky grader (very specific down to how you label graphs and things). as long as you are willing to work hard and do the work required you will do just fine. you have three quizzes and three tests and then the final as well as three or four homework assignments that are collected and graded. i went into the final thinking i was doomed and after the fact realized that i had learned much more than i had thought this semester. i recommend that for statistics you take McNichols.

She was actually a really good teacher and got her point across well. She writes EVERYTHING (and i mean absolutely everything) on the board, so it can be hard to keep up with sometimes because the notes are just all over the place. The class goes really fast so make sure not to miss too many classes. OH, and she'll teach new stuff all the way up to the day before the exam. The quizzes are directly from the homework and the exams arent too too bad if you study (which i didnt)

Dr. McNichols is an incredible lady and an incredible teacher on top of that. She is really difficult though. I went into this class with the wrong mindset. I came in thinking, "This is a Gen-Ed. I know Statistics. I had it in high school: mean, median, mode, and standard deviation. Piece of cake." WRONG! I got a big wake up call. There is a whole lot more to Statistics than mean, median, mode, and standard deviation. You will need to study for this class unless you are a serious math wiz. All of these negative comments for her are wrong. She is an excellent teacher, you will learn, but you have to be wiling to work. College is not supposed to be easy just because you pay a truckload of money for it. If you have to take Statistics, I recommend Dr. McNichols.

All quiz questions come directly from the assigned homework (How much easier can you get?) Her exams are relatively lengthy and hard, however if you do the work there will not be any surprises. Unlike many other instructors, she is not a monotone lecturer and you will actually leave the class knowing more than when you came in.

I never had a professor so brutally hard as Dr.McNichols. You'd think its easy enough listening to the lectures...but the tests and quizzes make up the harder portions of the homework and are BRUTAL. Make sure you can do almost all the homework easily before the quizzes and exams. I took Pr-Calc in high school and did alright, here I knew everything we went over...but she just threw the hardest curve balls at us on exams; it was extremely hard. It's not like she explains the hard stuff in the homework, she explains the easy ass examples during class but never the homework. She cancels her office hours a lot as well. SERIOUSLY, take ANYONE...even SATAN over this lady. She can't teach and shes brutally difficult.

I took Pr-Calculus in high school and did fine, got like a B as well. I knew most all of the material we went over already. What I did like about her was she explained more of the "whys" to what we were doing...which was pretty nice. As a person, she was also very nice and quirky. Her office hours are usually cancelled and pretty unhelpful...she usually just redirects you to get a tutor.. She would be fine, if her tests and quizzes weren't so damn brutal. She throws the hardest questions at you, and doesn't let you use a calculator. If you don't study and do practice problems before the exams...you will fail no doubt. I did them, and took the course in high school, and still got a C+. Overall, I'd only take her if you really are devoted to math and learning it. Even then...there are still much better options.

Class:Intro To Stats (D)
13 of 38 students found this review helpful.

Dr. McNichols is a very nice woman. The problem lies with how she explains things. I took her for Intro to Stats and I knew it was going to be a hard class. She moves incredibly fast, assigns a lot of online homework and book homework, and her tests wouldn't be quite as bad if she had more of them and didn't take off for every little thing. I missed 5 points on a question because I didn't rewrite the equation that I was using, though I had used it for an identical problem directly above the question, I missed HALF the points because it wasn't rewritten. If you have the time to do nothing but this class, then you should be fine, but if you have any other coursework, this is a rough class. Plus, if you ask for help outside of class, I got pushed aside twice because she "didn't have time" and the only other time I actually got to go in and see her lasted 5 minutes and she barely answered the questions I had. Then tells you to come in so she can help. She spends a lot of time making you use the calculator which is ridiculous. Because now, not only are you trying to learn the book material, but also trying to memorize all the functions and uses of the stupid calculator. The final IS cumulative, so do not fall behind and continue reviewing throughout the semester or will you be lost! Be extremely organized in this class and prepare to be late to any classes afterwards. She never lets you out on time. In her mind, she can lecture up til the end of class, THEN start handing out all the material she wants to give you. She has a terrible habit of explaining things that you don't need to know, like the Algebra behind an equation instead of just teaching the material at hand. Like I said, she is a really nice woman and she obviously knows her stuff. That's the major problem. If you're not a math major or stats buff, she makes it way more complicated than it needs to be. Worrying more about writing and erasing on the board, than making sure her students are actually understanding what she's trying to cover. Your grade will suffer. I would recommend taking someone else.

And she crams it into your head so it f***s up what you already learned. She has some strange need to explain everything down to the last little point. It took her over 35 minutes to explain linear regression. Oh and one more thing. If you get stuck with this psycho, you best not have anything planned (including another class) directly after her class. I still have yet to be let out on time.

If you're bad at math like I am, don't even think of taking her. Her Into to Stats class was horrid and she goes very fast. This class will consume a good amount of your time. If you are not a math major and need to take Statistics, take Dr. Jones or Dr. Long...YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY! (the grade "D" is for dropped).

She's a nice lady, yeah. But not the best teacher.. so stats is a pain, yes - but she makes it almost unbearable, especially in a night class! She often goes off on tangents about nothing that relates to the material - but she does give a lot of example problems. It's just a boring class, and she makes it even more boring - except for when she gets chalk all over herself and I do mean ALL over herself! She's very nice, and a sweet lady - but don't take her.

She rambles way off path, goes really fast and confuses you very easily esp. if youre not a math major. Her quizzes and tests have the dumbest questions making you memorize terms from the book. She talks forever so if youre waiting for help in her office, be ready to wait 30 minutes while she blabs. She takes points off for anything and everything. She comes off as very nice and loud but is a pretty bad teacher to say the least.

She can't teach... she tries to teach way to much material in one class. Her tests are impossible, and she makes this class harder then it needs to be. Her examples she gives in class are so easy, and then she makes her test questions so confusing and hard that no one can understand what to do. Avoid this professor, there are better ones.

I studied for 5 days for a math test, then after I took it I realized it was completely impossible to study for. She pulls questions from the nexus of the universe and throws them in the exam. I went through every problem we did for homework the whole year and the problems on the test are completely different to the point where you cant even start them let alone complete them.

She is just a horrible teacher. Finite math should not be a hard subject but somehow she makes it hard. She moves entirely too fast and tries to cover way too much material in each class period often leaving important stuff out because she runs out of time. If you can survive the cloud of chalk dust and you're a math wiz than this class is for you. Otherwise choose another prof!

She's a hard teacher, but she's always there to give extra help. She writes alot on the board and sometimes it is difficult to follow what she is saying. She spends half the class trying to figure out how to work the technology and once she gets it working, she uses confusing simulations that dont help in the long run. If you have another option..take it!

She seems like a nice person at all, but as as teacher, she is bad. McNichols never reviews anything, and she crams a lot into one class. I have stayed over every class, and it gets frustrating. You have to know vocab for her tests, but her questions can be confusing. She is a very difficult grader, everything is marked off. She writes everything she says on the board, and you spend most of the time trying to keep up, rather than understanding the material. Overall she needs help with her teaching style, I am surprised she has not noticed that it is not working yet!

Ok, heres the deal. This lady does know her stuff and tries to convey it to the class. The only problem is that her voice will make even the biggest of suck-ups quiver. Basically, you go to class and write down notes for fifty minutes. Quizzes are taken directly from homework, but this lady assigns so much that nobody does it. Tests must be her way of having fun. If you forgot to make an answer negative, she takes off half credit right away... Another thing, all of the in class examples and homework seem easy in comparison to the problems she comes up with for exams. If you are a slacker, you WILL do bad in this class. To tell you the truth, when you get past her annoying voice, pages of notes, hard exams, and endless amounts of homework, shes not too bad. She at least tries to be a good teacher (but fails miserably).

Dr. McNichols is the absolute worst professor ever!! She tells the class, "this is not a proof course" but that is all she writes on the board and then expects us to be able to do the problems without explaining how to use the proof so that we can answer the question. And, her tests and quizzes focus on the most minute details, she doesn't care if you can compute derivatives and integrals, she cares that you can tell the domain of every function in the world. I am begging you, if you care about your grade, DO NOT TAKE HER!!!

She's a LOSER! She can't teach. After our first exam, when our entire class failed, she screamed at us. Im thinking if everyone failed wouldnt u think the prof was doing something wrong? Exactly! When i went to her for help all she kept saying was "Well the point is..." i dont give a F!!! She couldnt help because she doesnt know how to explain what she teaches because she rewrites whats already in the book. Did i mention she writes everything down? She kills more trees than anyone could ever imagine. For my Calc II class she gave like 150 pages of notes, all handwritten in her chickenscratch! I suggest running away from her class ASAP. If you dont u'll end up regretting it & having to take it over anyways. RUN AWAY FROM THE PSYCO MCNICHOLS!!!

Well, the first couple of weeks weren't too bad, just simple review and easy quizzes. But once she got into the new material, good God, strap yourself in, it's gonna be a BUMPY ride!!! She moves lightning-quick through everything, and tries to make up for her speed with near-perfect ILLEGIBLE notes on the board and in handing them out. She doesn't announce homework, it's hidden in the notes. Here's a good math question for her: How many trees does she kill in handouts each semester??? And the quizzes. Yeah they are from the homework, but they're the special cases that take the average math major twenty minutes just to decipher. The tests, good God you have to study as if you don't eat, sleep, or go to any other class for a week to pass! I'm not saying I'm lazy. I'm all for the whole self-motivated-more-responsible studying, but she's just insane! Other than the work, she is a nice person, willing to help, though somewhat futile. But don't count on her being on time for her office hours. There are two types of people who will pass, much less excel in her class: Workaholic brainiacs who couldn't afford Drexel or Yale, and exact clones of McNichols. If you're one of these two, you'll do fine. Otherwise, drop it if you can. That's what I did

There are usually two ways to do math. 1. The complicated and difficult way. 2. Shortcuts that work 99% of the time. Unfortunately, the only way that maters to her is the difficult way. Unless you're good at note memorization, YOU ARE SCREWED. I learned alot about Calculus in highschool, and actually understood it until she corrupted everything upstairs. Not even Lenny Jones and Winston Crawley could undo the damage entirely :( Take Jones or Crawley if you want to know what the hell is going on. McNichols might actually know something about Calculus; too bad we'll probably never know.

McNichols gives tons of notes, treats you like a little kid who doesn't understand 2 + 2, and takes points off for every little thing. She is willing to help you, but warning if you're going to her office be prepared to be there for an hour talking about her family. She gives LOTS of homework and expects you to do all kinds of stupid busy work to turn in ontop of it. The one good thing about her is that she does photocopy all her notes and gives each student a copy of them. Always gives a cumulative final. If you take her be prepared to study a lot and do a lot of homework!

I had to take her for 3 classes, and fortunetly, I am very smart. But for the rest of you, dodge this bullet, or your GPA will plummet as fast as the stock did during the beginning of the Great Depression. She constantly lecture to you like you are just learning algebra, and to make things worse, she actually goes over the algebra. MY favorite phrase for her is 'killing a dead horse'. She constantly rehashes the same topic over and over and over again until you got it, or until you're tired of hearing it. And then, she'll talk about it again. Her only plus is that she gives out the notes. But at the same time, this deters good students from taking meaningful notes, not to mention the economical ramifications of this method. For example, let's say that on average she has 3 pages of notes per class for Calc 2, and she also has 90 students for this class and this class meets 4 times a week. After the 16 week semester, she has wasted 17280 piece of paper for just one class. That's practically half a tree! Her exams are 20 difficult than her quizzes, and the lower the level of a class you take, the more quizzes and exams you get, and the more nightmares that you create. The only reasons you should have for taking any class of hers should be if it is worth 15 credits, or if you have no other choice, and there is always another choice.

Hi folks! McNichols is a great proff and a nice lady but I think the way she teaches and the tests are the tough parts. I thought being a visual learner that having all the notes written on the board would be to my advantage (which in truth seeing the problems worked out helps) but it really is a lot of notes! She doesn't go over the homework at all so make sure you understand it before a quiz or test. She definitely does teach new stuff right up until the final day or the class before a test. So do yourself a favor while in this class: -see her (she is REALLY WILLING TO HELP) and the math center/LC tutors -filter through your notes -go to class -and don't fall behind on homework because it will really pile up :( This class is presented by the book and in some cases by her in the most complex way...if you are looking for plain English as opposed to Math-ese (see her ASAP, use that gifted brain of yours or make sure you make the drop date)--otherwise good luck and gut it through.

Ok ok I agree that she is a very difficult professor who writes everything on the board and who has very difficult tests(studied an average of 6 hours for each one) and her grading was riduclous (there is a theory that if you were to hand in the test blank, you would get a negative score). On the other hand, she is very willing to help, the quizzes were exact HW problems so if you had trouble with the HW go to her before the quiz and you'll do fine. The tests are hard but if you are a math major you will realize that a lot of it is theory that she went over in all her proofs. I don't see how you can say she is about memorizing when she went over the proofs so you would understand the concept!! DUH! Anyway if you don't like to work for your grade or truely learn the theory behind concepts then don't take her. If you want to learn the material well take her, just be prepared to work hard.
