Decent professor. Design patterns was a good class. Made a lot of mistakes in lectures, but usually corrected himself. In office hours, he sometimes come across as a little standoffish and unwilling to spend much time to help. His tests are long and require a large amount of writing. Overall pretty good - you could do worse.

Ok Mooney's classes are tough, but Mooney is not. He's a nice teacher and always willing to help, but he has a lot of material to cover. These courses aren't easy, and you need to be prepared for that. Just do the homework and make sure you read the over stuff you don't get while doing it then show all your work on the tests and you'll do fine. I will say though he does assign a lot of homework, but no more then most Math teachers. Either way, its possible to not only pass but get an A.

You work hard in his classes. He expects more than most other profs. But you'll learn a good deal. He also basically requires that you program in C, which, in this Java-age, is absolutely shocking. You'll actually have to learn how to work with pointers and memory allocation! His lectures are very detailed and he gives weekly quizes which help keep you on your toes. All his quizes and tests are essay and you will learn a lot as a result. If you're not Comp Sci, avoid him. If you are Comp Sci, take him.

Dr. Mooney is a rough time. Not unlike Briggs, who sleeps with OS code under his pillow, Dr. Mooney loves CG and he knows his stuff. His class massacred guys who thought they could breeze through. The projects are intense, the tests and quizzes thorough, and the lectures usually run late, and leave your ballpoint smoking. That said, you learn a lot more concrete stuff in his class than any other. There are no surprises, if it's on the test or quiz, he lectured about it-thoroughly. If he wants you to do it in a project, he'll have you do it in a lab prior to the project coming due. Yes, he actually reads your source code. He takes forever to return tests and projects, and that's because he actually puts effort into grading our work. He even showcases the projects he thought were the best, which is a nice 'Attaboy' whenever you put that much effort into something. (Wish other profs did that, it's a good motivator.) You know exactly where your grade comes from, there's no nebulous 'Class Participation' grade for ass-kissers to exploit and slackers to bitch about. Put a lot of effort into the projects, and you will be rewarded-without a doubt, that's what got me the A. The exams are tough, but if you keep up with the labs and projects, the OpenGL code becomes second nature, and the rest can be memorized pretty easily. Definitely the prof to take if you actually want to learn something. Besides, graphics are the fun stuff of computer science, right?

Very effective prof. He makes sure you are able to understand java code. I believe he explains thing throughly. Will not answer certain questions about labs and projects, but its because he thinks its better for you to figure out on your own.(which it was for me) Tests can have some hard questions and are usually long. Keep up with notes and do the labs/projects and you should do fine.

Yeah, he IS a GPA killer. But he is the best of the best. He is very indepth in his teaching. A little too indepth. It can cause you to loose interest some times, which can hurt you on test day. But he knows his stuff, and he really enjoys working with the students. He can teach a single subject from many different angles. Best proff at ship, period.

There's only one Dr. Mooney. No other teacher will ever be like him. The man knows his stuff, but beings that he knows it so well, sometimes it's hard to understand exactly what he means. All of his courses are demanding, he expects you to learn. Frantically copy down the notes he puts up on the overhead and you'll do fine on his exams. He is a very picky grader on exams so make sure you write everything that you can think of. He grades programs and assignments pretty easy though, if he ever does grade them. If you've ever been in his office, you'd know what I'm talking about. Mix a sci-fi thriller w/ a throw back from the 60's, and add a sprinkle of Computer savy and you have Mooney. By the time I graduate I'll have had him for 6 classes. So that's saying something.

Dr. Mooney is an excellent prof, but he won't baby his students. He expects you to do your work. He is willing to help you out. If you want to slack off don't take him, but if you want to really learn something he's definitely a great prof.

No, Dr Mooney is not an easy professor. He expects a lot of students and rightly so. Of all the CS classes, I took at Ship, Dr. Mooney's classes(also had him for Comp Graphics) were the only one's were I couldn't eek by with minimal effort. He failed me the first time for Graphics and I deserved it. He is understanding and willing to help, but does not make things easy. That's the way it should be. You can learn a lot from him if you want to.

Subject: Database  (Apr 09 2009, 11:48AM)

I am currently taking database with Professor Mooney. We have just recently received our second exam back, and in his own words, "I started grading these exams and they did not look too good, and as I continued, everything got progressively worse" "There wasn't a single thing that everyone did poorly on, it was the test overall" This to me would mean that if the entire class bombs the exam, the material was not taught in an efficient manner. This is a pattern that seems to be present in other teachers across the department, not admitting that the material was not communicated in a way that the class can understand. Dr. Mooney if I remember correctly has been teaching this course for about 15 years. He knows the material, he is a well seasoned vet to this profession. But his teaching style is enough to drive even the most diligent student insane. We cover about 15-50 pages of his material a week, and are quizzed on it each and every Thursday. These questions are on the material discussed in class, and you are given the notes. But there seems to be no given pattern to how the questions are asked. It could be anything from definitions to full scale problem solving. The problem is you never know exactly what to focus on when studying Granted this is not the most riveting course, but the material we go over, the definitions we memorize, have little to do with the actual implementation of the database. I seriously doubt half of the questions proposed in class could be answered by a professional in our field and pass this course who had been doing it for years.
But not to ramble, he offers all the help in the world outside of class, which I never understood, if a teacher can not explain a concept to the entire class, what success can come fro. Trying it again and again? In terms of questions on definitions...we are not walking tape recorders. Getting his definition down to the letter seems so impossible to do when a single slip of the tongue could mean an entirely false definition, instead of a simplified expression of a term you or I could comprehend with minimal effort I am doing just fine on the database project, but the exams and quizzes, we are all doing poorly on.
In short, this man knows the material, but in terms of transferring the knowledge to his students, there seems to be a serious problem. I would avoid this professor based on his teaching style, and testing methods. Otherwise he is a great guy, but this is a university for higher learning. Not a social event designed at making friends.

If you know nothing about programming like I did when I went into the class, do not take this man. He expected everyone to already know most of the stuff he said when it was obviously for entry level comp sci stuff.. he moves way too fast to understand what he tries to teach, so the stuff I did actually know I got confused on because I couldn't keep up.. unless you know the stuff before you go into the class, do not take it

Prof. Mooney was awful!! He doesn't like to help you at all. He is NEVER in his office when you need him, and even when he is, he'll just say, "Now, we went over that in class, you should know it!" or something to that effect. He thinks you should understand everything about writing programs and the Java code as soon as you walk into the classroom. He doesn't teach you how to actually do the labs or write the programs, he just expects you to know. And his quizzes and exams are like impossible. He grades VERY hard. Quizzes are 5 questions, 20 pts each and if you miss 1 part in that question, then you lose 20 points automatically. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!

Dr. Mooney was honestly the worst teacher I've ever had. He couldn't teach to save his life and expected you to be a computer expert from the moment you sat in the class. Hardily ever was around and truthfully I think he enjoys trying to fail his students. If you have to take this class, take another professor and save yourself.

Dr. Mooney is a very knowledgeable man in his profession, but he is also a hard teacher. He expects you to put forth a lot of time outside of class to understand the material. He gives out many labs which are hard but also gives you better understanding of the material. His tests are very hard because he wants you to be able to apply the concepts in code. The key to doing well in his class is to start your labs early and to ask many ?'s which he is happy to answer. His lectures are dry but all of the notes are online. He gives out homework, but it maybe takes 10 mins to do. He is a great prof in the fact that he definitely prepares you for Comp Sci 2, but is bad in how hard he makes the first class in comp sci you will take. So if don't want the effort don't take him.

Prof. Mooney is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. But his class is difficult to say the least. He is one of those guys who is so intelligent that he has a hard time getting it out to the students, or at least thats how he came across to me. He grades fairly to say the least, but his tests require a lot of studying, no doubt. My biggest gripes with Dr. Mooney were the fact that he rarely replies to his emails if you have a CS Project question for example, and if you ask him a question in regards to a problem with a lab or program, he is the most mysterious man in the world. he will NOT give you a straight answer.. EVER. Not a bad guy, decent Prof.. but can be one giant jackass if he wants to be. I do not advise taking him for any entry level CS course.
