Dr. Nordai is a tough professor. It is better to enter his class with previous knowledge in the subject area, but he's willing to help you out. Any questions that you have in class he will do his best to answer. Overall, don't be scared to enroll in his class... definitely challenging.

Do not listen to all those haters out there. If you are failing nordai's class then you're a total idiot. There is no reason to be failing. Nordai gives many examples in class. He asks the class over and over do you understand this? He goes through many examples and sometimes too many. He constantly goes over the homework in class. Everything that is on the homework is always on the quizzes and exams. There should be no reason for you to fail. My overall point is that he gives tons of examples in class and he tries to make sure that everyone comprehends the information. He is always around if you need help and he's just an overall cool professor.

Dr. Nordai really isn't that bad of a professor. If you do the homework he assigns then you'll do fine on the exams. The exams are pretty much the homework questions with different numbers. I would take him again if I had the chance.

I took Dr. Nordai for Calc 2. Now, hear me out. He teaches from the notes that he copied from the textbook, so he doesn't really teach anything. He doesn't take attendence so he never really knows if you attend class or not. He gives Maple quizzes, take-home quizzes that are roughly 10 points each. He gives 3 exams, a Maple exam, and a final. I got a 94, 82, and 44 on the three exams and I ended up with a B+. Since his class is so hard, we had 2 SI leaders. He gives extra credit for attending the SI sessions. If you can go to all of the them, DO IT, because the SI leaders help sort of explains what Dr. Nordai tries to teach in class. They help with what the exams will be like and gives practice problems. overall Dr. Nordai is a nice professor, but can be hard if you don't know what's going on in the class, since that is why people give him negative comments. Despite the low grades on exams, he curves and you can end up with a decent grade overall.

Subject: Not Text Book Material  (Oct 23 2006, 07:48PM)

Reading through some of the complaints in the negative comments section of this page brings me back to my semester with Dr. Nordai. While I was taking his class I thought that he was absolutely the worst math professor that I'd ever had. It's all true, he teaches at a very fast pace, his tests are impossible and most of the semester I found myself frustrated with him because I just it wasn't easy keeping up with him. Despite all of this, I'm still giving him a positive review because in the end, he makes up for it. He's a tough professor and I think he knows it. His tests are much more than the material covered in class. He actually expects you to be able to take the things you learned in class and apply them in different, new, creative ways! Despite my grades of 67, 76 and 81 on his three tests, I actually enjoyed taking them because they challenged me to expand my understanding of the content passed the text book. Overall, despite my bad grades on my tests I ended up with an A because he puts one hell of a curve on the grades. He probably does this because he knows he's a tough professor. Depsite the frustration and anxiety I faced while in his class, I'm glad to have taken a professor that actually challenged me to take my understand of the material passed the text book explaination!

He is a wonderful teacher. He goes through very good examples of everything he teaches. If u ask, he will explain something over and over again to make sure u understand. This can sometimes get the class a lil behind but we got thru all the info we needed to cover for the course. He also is very available during his office hours and other times if u need him. I went to see him a lot for different problems I had with course work and he helped a lot. He also gives a list of problems from the book for u to do at home. And if u have a question about them just ask. In class or out he will definitely go over it for u. He also gives quizes that are normally worth 10 points. Most times they are take home quizes so u can take as much time as u need and u can use ur book, a classmate, a tutor, or whatever to help u with it. U can even go to him if u have a question about the quiz and he will help. He gives a lot of these quizes so it can really help ur grade if u don't do well on a test. And he drops the lowest one or two. Overall he is a great prof. I would def recommend taking him. I'm taking him again this semester for another course and I plan on taking him for any other course I need that he's teaching.

Dr. Nordai was an easy teacher. He did tons of examples from each chapter and used those examples in the quizzes and tests. We had a bad quiz the one time so he just threw them all out. And at the end of the year, he threw out our 3 lowest quiz grades. Overall, it was pretty easy but I learned alot.

I absolutely can't stand calculus, I had it in high school and got a D... but Professor Nordai really got me to understand everything behind the subject. He doesnt go too fast, and he will always answer any questions you have. He also encourages you to come to his office anytime, and you get 2 points everytime you go to the SI sessions. His quizzes help, and even though the tests are tough, in the end if you attend class and do your best he would never fail you. If you suck at calc and want to actualy UNDERSTAND it, then take Nordai

1st thing - all u ppl with negative comments suck at math and need to get the hell outa college. u dont know what ur talkin about. 2nd thing-- this guy had a stroke and almost died a while back (for all u piece of shits who talk shit). but luckily he made a great recovery and got much much better than the condition he was in. iam not going to go into ne more detail about it cause its very personal and somewhat sad. 3rd-- he taught this class cause the school made him. THE BOOK we used was kinda crappy and written by 2 profs from shipp in the summer of 2002. so how do u expect nordai to know how to use the book when no one saw the damn thing till the start of the class. he was a down to earth guy willing to help ne one and went extremely slow and was straight foward with the info. tests were easy and take home quizes that he will help u with. it doesnt get ne easier or ne more straight foward than him, and if u dont think so well u r just stupid.

Now, reviews may be back and forth, but Nordai's my kind of teacher. He's to the point, he doesn't assign too much bullshit work, and he's definitely one of the smartest guys on campus. He totally reminds you of a coach or gym teacher though... or possibly a military man. I just like the way he teaches. Much better then some of the other choices out there for the math dept.

This guy might not be the best teacher, but he's not nearly as bad as what most people think. Sure, he goes through stuff pretty fast, but as long as you keep up with the homework there's not much of a problem. The quizes and tests arn't too bad, again, if you keep up with the work. He's also in his office a lot if you need extra help, and he likes it when students come to him for help because it shows they're working. Don't be afraid to take his classes.

Alright, this guy's not so bad. He takes attendance so you're pretty much forced to go to class and as long as you do, you'll do well. He's effective at teaching the material and since I hate math and did OK, he's got to be a decent teacher. I'd recommend him.

Prof. Nordai is a great guy and he is very brilliant. However, when it comes to teaching, it seems like he does not know how to explain the material at a student level. Not too mention we never actually finished a single problem in the class. Also, whatever he teaches in class that you think you understand... it's going to be something completely different on the test. Yeah, he curves a lot (or else I would have failed), but that's not exactly a good thing if you need to build on what you learned in this class during future classes.

I don't mean for my comments to be negative, but I know I am biased from having a negative experience with this professor. First of all, you better know every rule and formula from precalculus and trigonometry before entering this class. If you don't you're screwed. He's not going to waste his time teaching you past knowledge and he's going to make you feel like an idiot if you don't remember. He'll lead you through a ridiculously long explanation for something that has nothing to do with the material for your homework or tests and then pause and ask "Are you with me?" And you most certainly will not be with him. He has really bad handwriting and is incapable of getting on your level and explaining things simply. He makes everything sound so much more difficult with the way he explains it. The calculus book isn't really that great for learning on your own either, so I suggest going in for tutoring every day and even that won't help you since he'll throw you surprise questions on the test. This guy wants to fail anyone who isn't a genius like him. If you're a math major, go for it! He's brilliant that's for sure! Extremely tough on grading though, very picky. If I were to do it over, maybe visiting him and having him work with me on all my questions might have helped and practicing EVERY DAY. Memorize all the definitions, not just the jist of solving a problem. And... PRAY. Good luck.

For this class, Dr. Nordai was no good. He never gave homework, so there was no opportunity to practice anything. He talked so fast, I had trouble keeping up. I didn't dare ask a question...made that mistake in Discrete Math. He put questions on the tests that he didn't really talk about in class. He told us to study test 1 and test 2 for the final and we would be fine, but we didn't get test 2 back until the day of the final. Those were our only 3 grades. The class would have been easy with a good teacher. It seemed like really interesting stuff, and I would have loved to have had the opportunity to really learn it.

I took Nordai my first semester and I have to say that he may be the worst teacher I have ever had. You can tell that he is smart but he just cannot teach for the life of him. He comes into the class and starts going into the lesson and whenever he asks "Are you following me?" or "the answer is what?" its a rhetorical question because he doesn't stop for any answer... If anyone feels like risking asking a question on the suggested homework they are in for a fun ride because he literally takes up about 15-20 minutes to answer 1 question and by the end of it he often times he realizes that what he was doing was not what the question asked; even if he does do it right he isn't effective in explaining it to the student because he is all over the place, doing things that are completely unnecessary and then saying "well...you don't really need to know that". The tests were the worst part of his class, I studied for them and every time there would be multiples of one type of question that he mentioned ONCE EVER in class, its never something that the book goes over (if it is its a side note) but yet he makes it a major chunk of the test. One of the biggest things that bothered be though was no partial credit for any stupid mistakes; if you put a negative instead of a positive "wrong is wrong!", same as if you added wrong. The book is a better teacher than Nordai, avoid him at all costs.

The first class I had with Dr. Nordai, he told the class that they were going to fail. He said, my class is very difficult and most of you are going to either drop out or fail. He said that the people that work really hard are going to get Cs, but that no one should expect a B and certainly not an A. There are only 3 tests, weekly quizzes and the final. So bottom line, donít screw up on anything. The tests were very difficult. Sometimes they were problems that were not in the book and were never discussed in class. He would go off on tangents in class and then say ďOh well, you will never actually need to know this.Ē He doesnít care about his students and he doesnít care if you fail. I even took Calculus in high school and got an A. I expected to get an easy A in this class. However I basically had to teach myself, because he ended up confusing me more than helped me. My friends that didnít have Calc before were basically screwed before the class even started. However he does curve, which allowed a lot of people to at least pass the course. Even if you think that you know Calculus, donít take him. If you have no other options- Good Luck!

Dr. Nordai may be very knowledgeable in his subject area, however, he lacks the ability to engage students in really learning the material. I do not learn by memorizing like a lot of other students. It has been a while since I have taken the course with him, but I have heard repeatedly how much other students struggle in his Applied Calculus course. My recommendation is to take the course at another institution and transfer it in if he is your only option. There are some professors focused on student's learning, but sadly he is not one of them.

He doesnt explain how he got the answer or anything, he just expects you to know it. He grades on a curve..but it really doesnt help too much. He likes to give a lot of quizzes too...which arent too hard because theyre open notebook. But on his tests, which are multiple choice, are math problems that he never even taught you. There were a lot of 'smart' math kids in my class too...and they finished out with a D. Just don't take him...especially if youre not good at math. He makes simple concepts soooo confusing.

Well first of all, I never was good at math to begin with. However, I have taken two math classes here at ship and have done just fine. Even if you attend every class and give it your all most people tend to get a C or D. He was of no help at all and told you that you were doing well even if you were not. He tells you that certain problems will be on the test and when you finally get the test, the test is like a foreign language with no similar problems. If you want to succeed in math, do not take him! However, he is a nice guy and cool to get to know...but don't put yourself through his class!

He rambles on and on about stuff that doesn't matter at all (in the middle of telling saying a sentence about actual math). He doesn't know what he's doing, AT LEAST once a day we have to correct him becuase he does stuff wrong. His tests, like someone said before, are on nothing he goes over in class. You think you understand everything until you see the test, and are like WTF is this, we never saw it before. He is teaching a class he hasn't taught in 38 years, literally, so you know he must be a pro. Honestly, don't take him unless you can't avoid it. If you do take him, I'm sorry that your GPA will get flushed down the drain becuase of him.

This guy is terrible. If you get B's on your test and 10 out of 10 on quizzes, you get a C+ for the class. I thought that was pretty cool. I think that proves it all. Don't take this guy if you care about your GPA.

This man is by far one of the worst teachers. He is very inconsistent with what he says and does. All the quizzes were supposed to be open book from the homework, so I bought the solutions guide for an easy A. The quizzes were always harder than any practice problems he gave us and most were closed book. He would randomly give quizzes if attendence was bad. If you missed a quiz/exam sometimes he would let people make them up, sometimes he wouldn't. I dont think that was right. He was always messing up and even graded our tests wrong, proceeded to lecture us about how bad our grades were and then didn't even apologize when he realized HE made the mistake. Doesnt give partial credit either. AVOID HIM IF YOU CAN!! The only reason I got an A was because i had this in high school. I feel sorry for any who don't already know the material. You'll be teaching yourself.

Dr. Nordai, while appearing to be a nice guy will not hesitate to screw you over in the end. His exams are unbelievably difficult and you are expected to memorize the book. He lectures directly out of the book which makes his class less than interesting. I wouldn't suggest taking him if at all possible.

He teaches you stuff & writes it on the board but a third of the time it's wrong, & either the SI or the students have to corret him. You study for his test and think you know as much as you can but when you get the test, there's at least one question thats worth a lot of points that no one knows. This question comes out of nowhere and sometimes makes no sense. I mean he's a nice teacher but he doesn't know how to teach.

I would recommend everyone not to take this hard ass bastard for operational research. shit head goes to damn fast, everything on the overhead, his shit doesn't make any sense. he gave us a take home final that was straight from the book but was too damn hard beacuse he did a shitty job during class. He's a person who just likes to collect his paychecks. I would recommend everyone to avoid this hard ass millitary bastard at any cost....

So far I have so many math courses, and I like almost every professor in mathematics dept.. Also let you know that I never give anyone a negative comment. But for Nordai, he deserves it. The guy was a chairman of mathematics dept. a semester ago; how he becomes a chairman? No clue; he is a dumbest person in the entire mathematics department. If you people call him a Dr. or Proff., I would say, you are disrespecting the other faculty. Now back to discrete mathematics. This guy takes attendance everyday. In the exam if there is some mistake, he gives "0". No partial points, no curves, skip chapters that he doesn't know how to teach, he doesn't practice the material before coming to class. If you have any questions and you email him. Iíd say don't even bother to wait for his email, he doesn't answer emails, doesn't return phone calls. He is so dumb and a hard ass that he does qualify to be in generous people (mathematics dept. faculty). Also I would like to talk about other students who left a positive comment. One student said, "he's definitely one of the smartest guys on campusĒ. I'd say thatís a joke, maybe he is a freshman who never seen an experience faculty. Let me give an example, this semester I have two 400 level math courses. And each of these Proff. I have never seen notes in their hands during the class. Everything they do comes right out from their head. They just look at the question and know what's the answer. On the other hand Nordai, he takes 5-6 minutes to understand one problem. This guy can't even do probability right. Now about my grade, this is the only course that gonna screw-up my GPA this semester. I have five absence in his class, and I know he gonna take 2% off of my grade. I donít now want Iíll get in his course, maybe ďDĒ or ďFĒ. I would recommend everyone to stay away from Nordai (this is only for Discrete mathematics), if you have choice, take somebody else; ďAVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!Ē. Donít think I am some freshman; I am currently a junior student and becoming senior next semester. If you still want to take him itís your choice, God save everyone from Nordai. Good Luck to you all

his tests are riddiculous, i would study for hours till i thought i knew everything that could possibly be on the test, go in and nothing i studied or he told us to study was on there(maybe 2 ques) and all the other stuff was weird applied questions, he sucked, seems like he knows math but just cant TEACH it, there are 3 freshmen who teach more than he does, and it is damn annoying! so im headed to calc for my 3rd time

i dunno, you guys might like a teacher that teaches one thing, then tests on the stuff he tells you NOT to study, or one that grades seemingly completely arbitrarily, i dont, i find it annoying as all hell, but thats just me, dont take this guy if you can avoid him, how he became chairman i dont understand, because this man obviously doesnt know math, we have a freshman teaching the class basically, and hes easier to understand!

Dr. Nordai seems to genuinely want to teach, but is not always effective. In this class, he did pretty well because the material wasn't too difficult. I did make the mistake of asking a question once. He responded, "Well, that's so easy it shouldn't need an explanation." I wanted to crawl under the desk. I never asked him another question. He did give a lot of examples and practice problems for homework. He also gave a lot of quizzes - some of which he threw out if the grades were low. For this class he wasn't too bad, just not very sensitive in his responses.

Dr. Nordai is a decent prof. He doesn't take attendance and missing class doesn't really affect your grade unless he is giving a pop quiz. His grading scale is pretty nice too. 60-79% is a C. I recommend him if you already have a good knowledge of math and are capable of obtaining information from the book. He also curves the grades at the end of the year. So it's virtually impossible to get lower than a C (unless you're a dumbass). His tests aren't that bad and same with quizzes. But like I said, take his class if you already understand math well. Have fun skipping 1 or 2 classes a week like I did!

So...this guy knows what he's talking about, but don't expect to understand a word of it. He's a good guy, but just can't teach. Don't expect to learn anything new if you take this class...he rambles and gets lost in his own problems on the board...he can't use technology, doesn't care who you are or that you can't get a hold of him. His tests are insane in the fact that nothing on it was reviewed in class. Ask what will be on a test, and he'll list chapters, yet when it comes nothing you studied is there. The only good thing about this class was his MAJOR curve. It did wonders for my grade!!. Just go to all the classes, I know it's hard, but he gives out random quizzes that will help your grade if you do well. He throws out the bad ones, so everyone pretty much ends up passing...oh yeah, if the curve doesn't matter to you, then don't take him. A word of caution. Don't sit in the front, 'cause you'll get hit with the constant phrase of "Are ya with me!?" every single day.

I'm not sure whether he deserves a negative or a positive comment. He wasn't that great of a teacher in general. He asked the same stupid question over and over again and got on my nerves. When you asked questions he'd make you feel stupid for asking in the first place he'd basically be like DUHHH how do you not understand. I mean I understand most of the stuff he went over in class, but when I went to take the tests I was like uhh when did we learn this ever? Mostly everyone bombs the final too, but somehow I pulled off a B and I'm thinking it's cause of his ridiculous grading scale.. where he lines everyone up from highest to the lowest grade and puts marks where he thinks the A's are and the B's and so forth so I guess that was a positive thing, cause I definitely was nowhere close to even a B before the final!

I can't believe I'm saying something neutral about this guy. I def got the wrong first impression from him. His tests are hard but it's so he can weed out the really smart people and the dumb ones from the average to establish a curve. Go to the SI sessions, read and do the homework, and ask questions even when you feel like youre annoying the SI. Above all, do well on the basic skills exam and study like mad for the first exam! If you can handle some hard work, take this prof.

Mr. Nordai was an interesing professor that was hard to ask questions because he doesn't hear that well. He knows the material, but when he was dealing with the new book he was confusing trying to learn the new method along with the students. You must be patient with him, but he is a very good teacher. Take advantage of the SI sessions and you should do well in the class.

Prof Nordai was an Ok teacher. His class is very difficult and you have to do the work. The SI sessions saved my life so go if you get the chance. He gives you 2pts for going to each session. He wants you to pass and does plenty of examples on the board but he moves at a fast pace. Talking to other people who took other profs, Nordai seems pretty good. Just pay attention and ask questions.
