Dr. Paulson is seriously one of the best Biology profs I've had.
1) He doesn't make you do busy work, so when there is an exam or practical you simply have to know the basis of the work instead of really in depth questions
2) He does whatever he can to make sure everyone gets an A, he curves every exam and then curves again at the end of the semester
3) He does take attendance, but if you show up to almost every class he'll curve your grade at the end of the semester better
4) Some people think he is mean but I've realized those are all the kids who sit in the back of the class. As long as you sit in the first four rows he'll be a little easier on you because that shows you care
Take Paulson if you can, just put forth basic effort that you would for any class and you should have no problem coming out with an A or B!!!!

During first year, yeah we'd like to hate him, but Dr. Paulson is genuine. Sometimes he exams on random things, but his upper level classes are effective, and he really dedicates his time to making sure his students learn. Unlike most professors, Dr. Paulson interacts with students. If you spend 5 minutes going to his office, you can understand that he raises the bar.

Dr. Paulson was a good prof. Some people don't like him because his tests are hard, he is mean, boring, etc. Trust me, he is a good guy. If you come into the class with a piss poor attitude, or if you talk/txt/sleep in class he obviously won't think much of you. The class covers a ton of material, but if you pace yourself the tests are a breeze. He literally gives you a sheet of questions that will be on each test. Granted, there are about 50-60 short answers on the sheet for each exam, but if you put time in early to memorize it anyone can do it. The material is easy, just learn how to study and don't be an ass and you'll get a B

Dr. Paulson is a very difficult prof but he gives you everything that you need to know on his power points, however it is a lot of information. This is a great freshman class because it will teach you how to study and manage your time. Take him and take his class seriously and you will have a great base for the rest of your college career.

95% and exempt from the final, what more can I say? He's interesting and knows a lot besides just what's in the book. Attendence not mandatory, fair tests.

Dr. Paulson is a pretty nice guy. He goes over everything very throughly. He gives you a lot of information to know, but it is mostly interesting. You have to do one oral presentation but its with a partner and isn't too bad. Overall, he is a good prof. I would take him again.

This is one bio prof. who isn't boring and if you get an A you are exempt from the final. He's always willing to talk to you and just generally a good teacher.

In rebuttal to the previous comments posted..Dr. Paulson DOES require attendance. He has started giving random quizzes to ensure people are attending class and takes attendance and marks you down 2 points each time you are not there. He is intelligent, but his lectures are boring and his tests are IMPOSSIBLE. Even his labs suck..I dreaded going to them every week. He grades everything at a higher level than 115. If you can, take Klotz.

Subject: Makes you wanna drop Bio as a major  (Mar 07 2007, 03:57PM)

Dr. Paulson is an ineffective teacher (even though he is department chair) because despite covering a very extensive amount of material, he fails to develop any one particular subject to where it would actually serve as a base of knowledge to build upon. This also tends to leave the students open to several conceptual items on exams that they would be better able to answer if he had bothered to go into any amount of detail... The problems with his ineffectiveness on exams, not to mention his obscure manner of expecting the students to deduce his meanings on tests, lead the students to do very poorly. The current class has 1 B, 2 B-, 5 C+, 20 C and C-, and a total of 26 D's and F's... out of 54 students. NO As. Something tells me that Dr. Paulson would begin to notice this effect were it not for his bias towards Freshman students. Since Dr. Paulson himself failed college his first time, he now believes that his students are performing with the same lack of respect for college which he initially held. Therefore, the class is told that their bad grades stem from their inadequate studying / attention to the material "covered" in class, rather than from any failures on his part. In conclusion, Dr. Paulson COULD become a more effective professor if, instead of assuming that the students have a disrespectful attitude toward the course and subject materials, he covered less material in much more depth, and covered important concepts rather than obscure facts. Do not take this professor if you have any choice he literally is enough to make you decide to switch majors.

Until I switched into the biology department, I carried a 3.8 GPA...thanks for bringing that down, Paulson. 40 students in our class, and the top grade was an 83%...and that kid was taking it for the 3rd time! The class average was a 64% and he wouldn't offer any explanation besides "you guys are the worst, weakest-working class I have ever had." Stay away from him, he teaches a 115 level class like it's a 700 level doctorate.

Professor Paulson is okay. All you do is go to class, and all he has on the screen is pictures out of your book. I suggest talking notes before going to class and then adding on to what he says. He gives 3 exams and the final and that is it. I thought I was going to have to drop it because I bombed the first exam. Lucky he drops your lowest exam out of the 3. I eventually had to get a tutor and I got 80% on the last two exams. He allows a cheat sheet on the final but DO NOT TYPE IT. I made that mistake. Overall you really have to study for the exams, and Professor Paulson is an alright guy.
