Professor Quist is a very nice professor. His lectures can get boring, but I feel History is a dry subject anyway. He does expect you to do some reading for essays and exams, but overall not bad course work load (no quizzes every week or anything like that). He does like you to be attentive in class, and answer questions, but it is for your own good in order to learn the material. Study for the exams, especially dates, and he is fair with his grading policies. Overall, a very nice man!

Quist's class was really not as bad as the comments on here make it out to be. DO NOT get me wrong, the tests are difficult (you absolutely, positively MUST MUST MUST know dates), but with a little bit of work, you can do well in the class. I made flash cards for every test; something that I haven't done since middle school. The class consists of 3 tests, 2 papers and 2 quizzes. The papers and quizzes are about novels you must read throughout the class. There is also a participation grade, so even though Quist is super intimidating, it doesn't hurt to raise your hand and attempt to stimulate the conversation. Good luck!

I think Dr. Quist is a very nice man and do not listen to these haters. Yes he is a bit hard but manageable. We are in college people, not middle school of course he wants you to read, of course he wants you to think a little, and yes he is very long winded but he is so smart, you have to listen to him, he knows what he is talking about. The tests (3 total) are pretty easy, all you have to do is define 5 terms-straight from class discussions, and write one essay-you can usually tell what topics he will choose, don't be stupid. Just write down as much info as possible. You also have to read two books and write two 3-5 page papers on them, piece of cake-go to the writing center and they will help you out so much and he will give you a good grade just for going there. He also likes you to volunteer, so do it, always answer in full sentences, he doesn't like one word answers. If you can answer intelligently and not say um....well... what..wait...repeat that again, of course he will think you're stupid, answer like a college student and you will be fine. Take him if you love history and love smart awesome professors, love love love him. I would take him for the rest of my college years!

I am a history major so I enjoyed Dr. Quist and World History I. He is a weird guy but likes what he teaches and loves for everyone to participate (it makes a difference in your grade, so volunteer all the time). However, if you don't volunteer he will do it for you and will ask you a million questions. If the answer you give is wrong, he will tell you so don't take it too personally. His tests (3) are all essay so you must must must study and he gives 2 quizzes on the two books you have to read. The books suck but they aren't incredibly impossible to read and write a 3-5 paper on either. He makes you work and you will learn a lot, just be open-minded about his teaching style.

Professor Quist is very effective in teaching. Sure, we're all tired sometimes and may not be overly interested in History, but in my opinion, he MAKES it interesting. He forces you to think, to link things together, to apply yourself. So, if you're not ridiculously lazy, you'll enjoy and do well in the class.

I decided to comment on Dr. Quist so that his rating could be raised. I would reccommend anyone who is going to college to learn, to take him. I only say that because I am irritated by so many comments from people who expect to get through a class doing very little work. If you're paying for the class (or your parents or tax money) you should get your money's worth. Dr. Quist definitely gives you your money's worth! He knows more about his area of expertise than any other professor in the history department. If you read the material and books that he assigns, which are suprisingly interesting, and can write a good essay, then you are without a doubt going to get an A. Although dry, his sense of humor makes up for the dragging aspects of class.

Dr. Quist is a good teacher. He really knows his history by heart. I don't think he had to look at any guideline notes for the facts he gave us on the board,(very impressive). This class requires you to take 3 essay exams, write 2 papers, and class participation. It is not an easy class by any means, as you must link many historical ideas, facts, and concepts together to get good grades on the exams. I would recommend this professor if you are interested in History, and want to cover a lot of ground quickly in one semester.

12 of 37 students found this review helpful.

Mr. Quist is a prof you don't want to take if you want to sit back, skate, and not think. I say that because if you apply yourself with any interest, think about what he's saying, repeat it back to him on tests, you will get and 'A' or 'B'. YOU MUST TAKE EXTENSIVE NOTES. In my opinion, virtually all of the Bentley text is only good for filler information. If you write furiously during the entire class and study your notes, you'll do well. You should definitely score well on the essay if you take great class notes. He'll also give you 7 short I.D. of which you do 5. Your notes will probably cover 4 of those and Sherman text will probably cover the other 1. He is not a crush-the-beercan-on-the-head type of guy. If you're looking for a champagne personality, look elsewhere. He is a highly knowledgeable history professor, though. I would take him again because I now know how to study for him. He asks you questions in class FOR YOUR OWN GOOD. Class participation is part of his grading system, so if you participate, you gain points. If you sit there like a rock, you gain zero points. You do the math. He's a good guy.

Pretty easy professor. Takes all of his tests directly from the notes and articles from 'the sherman book' which he makes you read during class anyway, so you know it for the test. He has a dry sense of humor and gets side tracked in his own babble sometimes, but if you stay awake you will be fine. Remember dates for the tests which are essay (easy questions though) and you will be fine. Ok so I completely forgot about a test one time, walked in and didn't look at a thing and still got a 70 without cheating or anything, so if you study imagine what you can do!

Dr. Quist is a very interesting man, and he knows his stuff. Im not just saying this because im a history major either. He cracks jokes once in a while which is good to! There is one downfall to taking him though...his exams are essays and you MUST know dates or you will get points taken off. Also there are 2 papers to write that will boost your grade on 2 novels that you read. If you want an interesting professor and you want to learn take Quist!

His paper is not hard either, just include info and important facts, the first paper i put together for his class was done last min and i never read the book it was about and i recieved a 91. All in all this teacher isnt bad, and to the dipshit who was talking about dates, get over it assmunch you will have to remember dates no matter what history class your in

If you have Quist, drop asap. He is horrible, has no empathy. He will have everyone open their books in class and he will single those out who forgot it and will stare at you until you answer his question. Does not check email. Only sticks to office hours. If you can deal with a professor who says UHM 500+ times in a one hour 15 minute class then he's perfect for you.

The class actually wasn't that hard. There is a lot of reading and it's all notes, but this is college history so you get that sometimes. The part I couldn't stand about this guy is his lecturing. All he did was talk the entire class, which wouldn't have been bad if he could actually talk in front of people. He couldn't go one sentence without saying Um at least once. In one hour and fifteen minute class, he said um 735 times. Yes, I counted. That's how boring it was. And his Ums made it hard to concentrate. So don't take Quist, but if you have to, Um, good luck!

He seems like a good guy and all, but the way he talks bothers me greatly. He has a monotone voice, pretty close to Ben Stein's, and he says the word "Uh" at least 3-4 times in a sentence. I tried counting the number of times he says "Uh" in one class period. I lost count because he was saying it too many times. His tests are fairly difficult, you really have to read and know dates. So I if you can get past his obnoxious voice, it probably would be an okay class. But him talking is just so annoying and distracting, that I cannot pay attention to anything he says.

Quist seemed to be a very nice professor, but the way he taught wasn't effective. I've had a history class before with a teacher who didn't use power points and mostly lectured, which I found easy, but with Quist it was hard to stay focused and I felt like I was lost most of the time. He has you read 2 books (the first one was confusing), but the essays for them are pretty easy to pass. His exams I feel are unfair since it's all essay. For the exams you have to identify people or events, and then there's an essay you choose to write about. If you end up with this teacher, start early with reading and taking your own notes of the terms on the pages he tells you to read, and pay attention to what he puts on the board and what he talks about in class. I wish whoever has this teacher luck!!!!

Don't choose this prof... if you did... Terrible decision. First, you must take absolutely PERFECT notes. Yes, some say his exams are easy because of the Essay and Identifying words, however...regardless of what you put, he WILL chew your ass out. [] He will choose on you randomly for questions, so make sure you know the answer, or once again, he'll eat you out. Don't bother responding to him with "I don't know", he'll just respond with, "Okay, if you knew the answer, what would it be". On the papers you must write, consider yourself f*cked...for the first, our class's average was a 70 - I dont consider that being a good "Average" grade for a class. I have chosen STAFF for History 2 Fall 09 Semester, and pray to God I dont get this guy again, I'm willing to take my chances with ANYONE ELSE BUT HIM. Goodluck All.

Worst professor in the world. First he makes no sense at all, his lectures go EVERYWHERE, and they are never on point, he'll ramble on about stuff that isn't even on the chapter... And FORGET about passing a test with him. He'll tell you what chapters are on the test, and then when you get there you need a blue book, and he'll give you a sheet of paper with random words in the chapter on it...Then you have to write essays on the words. If you dont know the random words he picked out.... YOU FAIL...

Quist is by far the worst professor/teachers I've ever had. Ship is my third college I've attended (I had to transfer for financial reasons), and I have never ever had a prof as bad as him. Everything that everyone has already said is true. Tough grader.. says "umm" every 1.5 seconds.. gives you pointless reading assignments.. and the lectures are enough to put you to sleep for the rest of the day. He's a royal asshole. I got sick last semester and missed a few classes. I respectfully e-mailed him and told him I had missed some notes. He, in no way, offered to help, but just said that when it came to grading my quizzes and tests, he would take my "absences into considerations." What a f*ck. Anyway.. don't take this guy. You'll regret it. I sure did!

His lectures are dry.. and it's hard to learn things from him. If you don't give him the answer he wants... he will bombard you with 20 more questions making you look dumb.

Okay. Let me start off by saying he's not that bad a guy. That being said, this class is the WORST. Boring, long, and he is a VERY tough grader. If you don't know every little microscopic detail about the Moops, then god help you. I am now probably going to get a D for this class, because he said my last paper was "too short" (it was the minimum requirement) and that I didn't use enough examples from the book (well how many am I supposed to use?!?). I definitely don't recommend this class, and I will be re-taking World History II with another prof.

All I can say in order to pass this class is to take GOOD notes! He grades the tests pretty rough and expects a person to know EVERYTHING about a certain topic which is ridiculous. This is just a gen. ed. class but he takes it too serious. His class consists of 2 exams which are both in essay format (choose 5 identification questions out of 7 and then write an essay which mainly deals with comparing and contrasting 2 different things) 1 final, 2 papers which are based on the books you are required to read (one book was soo boring and the other one was actually really good), he also has a brief quiz about the 2 books in which the boring book mostly everyone failed it but you can always make those quiz grades up by going to a cultural event in place of that grade. I think thats about it haha Good luck!

Quist is a hard ass. If you don't do your readings before class, chances are you will be called out for discussion and then you'll feel like a dumbass. You'll continue to feel like even more of a dumbass because Quist will point out to the class how you didn't read, and will continue to pick on you for the rest of the day. This happened to me a couple of times and to many other students as well. There is no real homework besides two 4 page papers. His three exams are 100% essay. This sucks if you don't know a damn thing but is somewhat helpful if you know a little of the information to bullsh*t. Try to avoid Quist if at all possible unless you enjoy participating in class and writing a lot.

This is horrible to say but even tho this is a GEN ED class he treats it like everyone is a History major. If you find history boring avoid his class at all costs. I attended each class and I am still going to end up with a D. His tests are impossible. I didnt study for the one test and failed and then for the second one I studied for weeks and i only got 2 points higher than the last one. You really need to participate EVERY class or you can kiss your grade goodbye. There are 3 tests, 2 papers (first book is horrible second book is amazing) and 2 quizes but no extra credit

OKay seriously.. this guy is not only the biggest asshole I've ever seen, but his class is by far the worst I've ever had at Ship. I guess if you love history maybe it won't be so bad, but if not.. DO NOT TAKE HIM.. AT ANY COST. His class is so boring, i honestly felt like I was going insane. I would feel like the class was almost over and than I'd realize I'd only been there for 15 minutes. It was HELL.. by the end of the semester I just stopped going cause it was so bad. Not to mention he was such a jerk. Every class he makes a point to call on everyone.. especially if you're not paying attention (which is impossible NOT to do)and he just loves making you feel like an idiot. He doesnt write down any notes so the whole period is just you trying to write down everything he says as fast as you can. I studied for every test for like 6 hours and would still do bad. Half of his tests are essay and he assigns you like 5 chapters and doesnt even give you a clue as to what the essay will be on. This class is too much of a pain in the ass to even consider.. there are tons of awesome history prof's. Dont waste your time with this guy.

Let me first start by telling you that the reason I probably hated Dr. Quist's class is because I can not stand history at all. Having this dude as a teacher made it 10x worse. Secondly - how do you even say this dudes name? I gave him the name, "Mr. Quist Quieffer" but I never really found out exactly how to pronounce it. I will give this guy some credit - he know's his stuff. He could probably go on and on about any topic in history for days, months.. shit, probably years! One day, he stopped class dead in the middle and picked up a piece of chalk - which he chewed up and swallowed right in front of us. It was probably the most ridiculous yet most comical thing I ever saw. His mouth was white the whole rest of the class.. haha. His lectures are so horrible. Do not take him for 1 hr. and 15 minutes or else I do not suggest bringing a watch with you because you will feel the need to look at it every 30 seconds - and it will feel like a decade by the time class is over. 3 tests, straight from lectures - no review sheet, no hints, no nothing.. just fend for yourself what you can and hope for a decent grade. 2 papers - one boring book and one decent book. He talks very slowly and is incedibly monotone that you have to wonder what he did in his spare time as a hippie/college student. Please.. someone find him help in how to teach a class, he might actually be o.k. if he could make history interesting. But.. there is no such luck! I hope no one else has to suffer through it like I did. My best advice to you : take as many notes as you can!

Do not take this class early in the morning or at night. It is the most boring lectures ever. His tests are very difficult, they are all essay. You must include dates, which are very hard to remember. He requires you to do a lot of reading as well. You are required to write 2 paper, which he grades very rough. I'll give him credit though, he's a decent guy.

I had this class for a 3 hour night class and it was so boring. We had to read two books and write two papers....it was a lot of work and it was such a long class that i hated it. I would not recommend taking him.

His exams and papers are what frustrated me the most. He does not tell you at all what to study, and you're only allowed to pick 5 topics to write about on the final, so you better know a little bit of everything! I got an 89 on my paper, which isn't a bad grade, except for what he wrote. 'You covered the topic well, but you had poorly developed paragraphs'. Maybe it's just me, but that seems like an unbalanced grading scale, to dock 11 points for my paragraph lengths based on a rule I've never heard of before.

He's...an interesting prof. Once I got past the countless 'ums' and 'uhs', I found that his lecture style wasn't half bad - it was actually kind of interesting to me, which says a lot since I don't generally like history. The worst part of his lecture was the fact that I ended up with an 8 am...never again! His class was interesting, but not THAT interesting! His exams and papers are what frustrated me the most. He does not tell you at all what to study, and you're only allowed to pick 5 topics to write about on the final, so you better know a little bit of everything!  He's a nice guy in general. Here's what you NEED to know though... 1)Always bring your text books and either read or skim through the material. 2)Every other word out of his mouth is "Uhhh" 3)No presentations!!! 3 tests(including the final) 4)2 papers on books you have to read...he usually gives good grades on the papers if you actually try* 5)try and take really good notes (don't copy what's on the board b/c none of it makes any sence, just listen to what he says) 6)GET TO CLASS ON TIME OR HE'LL GIVE A BORING LECTURE ON BEING ON TIME!!! (if you are a little late, knock on the door quietly or he'll say something about that too)

Dr. Quist is a decent professor, he has his strengths and weaknesses as any professor does. He is very friendly and available for help most of the time. He is a tough but fair grader, read for his class and you will do fine. However, I would like to say that his class sessions are horrible, and his humor is kind of dry. The boringness level is off the chart! I mean its like wandering through the Sahara Desert with a lifetime supply of saltines and no water!! However, he does perform a good floor show in front of the class. He has the balance of a one legged stork who has no peripheral vision. His biggest nemeses are oscillating fans, recycling bins, and whiteboards with dry erasable markers that don't write.

He wasnt a terrible professor... trying to read the stuff you are supposed to is hard, but if you do you'll easily pass the class. Hhe gives 3 or 4 tests, 2 quizes on the books he assigns and 2 papers on the books. He also grades on class participation. Don't take this professor if you have problems staying awake in class because he is very boring.

Ok he is a bit monotone which is not so great for a history teacher becuase lets face it, i'd say most people aren't too intrigued by the overwhelming facts of history... Ive read complaints about him calling on ppl in class but when youre a teacher and youre the only one talking im sure it is frustrating and insulting (also he only usually calls on random people when no one will answer his Qs), just take his questions as incentive to read, treat it like he is checking your homework becuase if he doesn't- chances are youre not going to do it, I havent read much so far and I'm paying for it on my tests. A little each night isnt hard and it helps you pay attn. in class becuase you can follow the discussion.... the only problem I have with the difficulty of this class is that he doesn't treat it as a gen ed course and many people in it have no intention of pursuing a career in history, so overall if youre lookin for a break this isn't the class but if you can keep up with a little reading during the week it really isnt too bad.

I mean he was a nice guy funny at times but for some reason i wans't feelin him. He liked to talk so i eventually figured out ( too late) if u take the notes from the class, read the novels, and study a little bit you'll be ok. I just got lazy... too many cute boys. : )

I had the class at 8 in the morning, which didn't help because the man is monotoned. This makes him incredibly boring. He is always available if you need help, but he just seems a little out there to me. The tests are identification and we had to write two papers. I would not recommend him.

A couple of papers; 3 tests-all essay & you need to know dates, places, names, everything; and boring lecture. You have to put some work into it, but not impossibly hard.
