Dr. Reber was by far, the best professor I have ever had. She's a really smart lady, and she has a lot of experience from travel. However, her class isn't easy, unless you do the work. You have to read the text, because they apply to the quizzes she gives you in class and she gives you a grade on class participation, so the info from the text prepares you for discussion. If you go to class everyday, take good notes and keep up on the text, you'll get an A in her class and you'll learn alot. I still remember everthing she taught me. Also, she was always around to talk to and was always offering help. I still go to her for help sometimes and she's not even my prof anymore! Dr. Reber is great, if you have a chance...take her!

She is a very effective prof. If you are willing to go to class and participate you will do fine in the course. Make no mistake this is not an easy A you have to work for your grade. But if you try and go to see her when you are having problems the class should be easy. Make sure that you do all of the required reading and prepare for the friday quizes because she gives you the questions... all you have to do is know the answers.

Everyone criticizes this professor so much for being too difficult and so unfair but thats not true at all. Reber knows a lot about what she is doing and gets her point across every class. Her class isnt the most fun but this is college and not every course should be a walk through the park. If you want to do some history work and actually learn something from the class then I would recommend her.

Reber is awesome, don't get me wrong her classes are hard if you dont come, don't pay attention, and don't care. She wants you to learn and she definitely knows her stuff! She will go out of her way to help you if you ask! I am sure its not hard to fail her class but its not that hard to pass either. If you put forth effort, [] you will be fine. Read the material so you are prepared for the quizes and study your little ass off for the tests and you will be fine. If you have any questions go and talk to her! Even if you are just concerned about a test coming up. Definitely make a study guide as soon as she gives you the list of stuff to study. Define each word and memorize as many as you can! I also recommend making an outline on the quizes she likes that as well as writing your essays for the quiz and for the exams out! write them then memorize them! Its less stressful that way!

Subject: Not bad at all  (Apr 04 2005, 01:42PM)

12 of 37 students found this review helpful.

Dr. Reber is not as bad as some people make her out to be. Her classes mainly consist of lectures, notes on the overhead, and short videos/slide shows. As long as you read what is assigned in the syllabus for each day, which is usually no more than 10-20 pages in the text (which, I might add, has a lot of pictures), you will be more than fine! Her tests, which most people hate, are not that big of a deal! She hands out an outline about 2 weeks before the exam of EXACTLY what is going to be on it. So, again, as long as you take the time to study, this class is not bad at all! Overall, I would recommend taking Dr. Reber for any history courses. Coming out of World History I and II with a B average, I have learned a lot and do not regret taking her.

I found Vera Reber to be a very good teacher. Granted, the class was a pain in the ass and the work was demanding, but if you study for each test and quiz, you'll be able to pull off at least a C in this class. A lot of people say that Vera is unpersonable, but she is actually a very nice person and very interesting to talk to. (outside of class) In class, always ask questions and don't goof around because she doesn't take too kindly to that. All in all, this class was worth the work.

Dr. Reber's class is definitely not the easiest class you'll ever take, but if you do the work you will be absolutely fine. All the people in my class who complained about her teaching never did any of the work, so of course they were getting bad grades! She is a good teacher. Her tests (2 midterms and a final) seem daunting at first, but if you study all of your terms and follow the study guide she gives you, you will be fine. She gives one 5 page paper based on two novels, which was easy. Dr. Reber places a lot of emphasis on participation in class. It doesn't even matter if the answer is wrong, she still gives you the same credit as if it were right because you participated. She takes attendance every day. Participation attendance are 2 easy ways to bring up your grade. Some days she gives slide lectures, but don't bother paying attention to them because they are insignificant to the tests and quizzes. She gives one 20 point quiz each week, but you are given which questions to study for in the syllabus. Do the work and you will be absolutely fine!

Dr. Reber's class was the most difficult course I've ever gone through. You have to do all your reading and you have to study a lot for your tests- I studied for 10 hours for the second exam and got a D-... but if you work from the beginning you'll be fine. She's hard, but it's very helpful because it makes you learn to work for what you want. If you do your work, you'll be fine. And if you see her during her office hours you'll be ok too. She is actually really nice! Just see her in her office early in the semester, and participate in class. But don't shy away from her because you're too lazy to work for a good grade!

Let's talk about Professor Reber. Going into her class...i had a heart attack cause of this website, and yes...you should too. it is an incredibly difficult class that takes up all of ur time and more. You need to devote yourself to this class more than any other class. In the end though, you feel fulfilled. The tests are like finals and the final is like hell. the paper is easy as long as u read the books, and you have to do cultural events. The quizzes, as long as you read, are easy to bullsh*t. its never enough, though. "In effect" and "you'll note" will become your most hated phrases, and life will suck that semester. but hey, cheer up, she may be the devil, but shes a nice devil.

Dr. Reber is not nearly as hard as people make her out to be. I studied at most 2-3 hours for each test and got A's on every one of them. There isn't any more reading in her class than in any other history class. The only people who got bad grades in her class were people who focused on every single detail instead of worrying about why stuff happened. If you put the 'why' for every definition it will be an easy class. On the other hand, if you are dumb and memorize every single stinking detail which you will forget in 5 min then you will do badly as many people often do in her class. Also, she likes when you talk in class. Other than that, just study for a little for each test and her class is cake.

Dr. Reber is a difficult Prof if you are looking for an easy grade. She goes fast but she knows her stuff. She is extremly intelligent and is great to talk to outside of class. She is always willing to help you figure out a way to study and help you succeed. She is great and even though there is a lot of information for the exams she helps you out by telling you about what topics the essay will be on. If you end up with her class don't drop it- it will be ok and her class is extremly intersting. Except her slides which I found extremly boring.

Iíve taken Dr Reber for History I and II. They focused largely on applying historical themes and treads and whatnot rather than learning the facts of what happened. Youíre assigned an average of 15 pages to read between classes and usually there is a 20 point essay quiz every Friday, the question to which is given to you in advance. Her lectures are quite boring, she shows a few boring videos, and the slides will put you to sleep. However, youíll learn a lot. Sheís not the most effective teacher, but she knows history. I found the workload to be fairly acceptable. Dr. Reber isnít for everyone Ė but if you find yourself watching the History Channel a lot or have decided to (while probably drunk) to major in history, this class is for you. Do what she asks and stay awake through the slides and youíll be fine.

She is hard, there's no doubt to that rumor. But you'll proboly take her as a freshman. Be ready to work, this is the only class that i worked in, but it made me feel good that I did. That B that i got that was the 7th highest grade out of 40 made my 30 hours that week prior to the test worth it. Also write out your questions for the quiz two nights before. It'll help.... she's not that bad...

Dr. Reber's class is one of the most difficult classes I've ever taken, but you learn the subject. The journal allows you to use your brain and pour it onto paper. The homework seems overbearing at times, but it's a lot to cover in one semester. Once you understand what she expects from you on the tests, you have a better understanding of how to study for them. Study, study, study!

She is a hard prof, but she knows what she is talking about. You do have to write journal entries, but hey if you do bad like I did, just rewrite them, she will regrade them and it could really improve your grade. I rewrote all of the ones she didn't like, which was almost all of the ones she checked (about 10-15) and turned them in the last day of classes before the final. It was time consuming but it really helped me in studying for the final.

I have respect for a prof that konws their shit...you ask her a question she gives you an answer. Her tests are hard for most. She expects that you konw Who, What, When, Where, and How from her lectures and if you don't study that then you will have problems. She really isn't that bad if you are interested and show interest in the topic at hand. and she does have a very sweet personality. Just talk to her :)

Dr. Reber had me intimidated, at first. She made you do a journal entry for every class and checked to see if they were done. She made you read, too. Discussion was important in the grade. She had one paper, which she graded pretty easily. She gave 3 tests; the first two were from the notes and the 3rd was comprehensive. It was unbelievably hard to study for the tests. She gave so many notes. If you read, pay attention, and study, you can get an A. It's not impossible, and despite her slides, she's very intelligent. The class wasn't the best, but it wasn't horrible, by no means, at least for me.

So itís your first semester and you got stuck with Reber. First off whatever you do, do not ask any questions in her class. If you do 9 out of 10 times she will cut you down. Study hard for her tests and put every piece of information you can remember down. She will grade easier if you fill up the entire space she provides on the page. There are no multiple choice questions on her tests just short answer and essay. Too bad for you, I survived and got a good grade, be sure to study for the final for a week. By the way she may dislike minorities in my opinion. Or maybe she just hates all students equally.

This class was extremely hard! Compared to all of my other classes this was extremely difficult especially for only being a gen ed. The whole class is based on memorization..memorizing ALOT of notes. What we had to memorize wasn't even given to us in the notes you had to read the book:( Her classes are based on lectures and they are soooo boring! By the end of the semester I read the whole book and I barely remember any of it. For all of her tests, you have to memorize a paragraph of info for about 50 terms not to mention a whole bunch of other stuff. For the final you have to memorize like 3 times the stuff for a normal test. You also end up reading like 6 books besides the text book and they are not on spark notes. It was my first semester and all of my friends were saying how easy their history profs were... I def got shafted. IF you have a choice DO NOT TAKE THIS NAZI!!!!!!!!!!

I took Reber for World History 2 and even wrote a comment about how I liked her and thought she was a good professor so I decided to take her again for latin american history. Now I see the side of her that everyone hates. She teaches class like a dictator and acts like such an asshole to students that have questions and makes them look really dumb. I broke my leg and was in the hospital for four days and when I got back I asked her for an extension on my paper that was due the next day and she told me I should have had it done before breaking my leg. When I got it back graded eventually, it was marked late and I didn't even get half credit. If that doesn't make her crazy then I don't know what would.

Reber no doubt knows all her stuff... she just is very boring. If you go to class and really study you won't do bad, but she somewhat expects you to have a decent background knowledge in history. Also, Reber gives quizzes every friday which tends to be annoying and she also takes attendance and is very strict about it. Rebers tests also are pretty hard and if you arent that great in history its pretty difficult, she expects very in-depth answers on the test. Unless you really enjoy history I would try and avoid Reber, I would never take her again.

I took Prof. Reber's class thinking that it would be an intresting but hard class. I was very wrong. Prof Reber is the most boring and mundane teacher at Shippensburg College. She never responds to negative emails and refused to talk with me about my grade the several times that I stopped her after her class. Her teaching method is also very poor. She shows slides from her vacations to the class, as with any vacation slide show this proved to be very boring. Her tests were almost impossible as she graded on interpation, not facts. Prof Reber needs to retire soon because she is very jaded and it shows that she no longer likes to teach.

Professor reber was effective, but at an insane cost. We had an essay quiz every friday, as well as 3 all essay exams, the final being cumulative. There are over 45 words on each exam that must be memorized enough to write an essay on, as well as even longer essays on religions and civilizations. She is very harsh with her grading, but with the peculiar way she tallies up your grades in the end, she is very lenient. I failed every single quiz, had a D- on a test and still pulled out with a B+. Make sure you talk in her class, participation plays a VERY large role in her grade book. For the love of GOD, avoid her, dont take her, and if u get her, change it. You only kill yourself by having this class

Horrible little woman. Truly terrifying. If you want a decent grade, not a good grade but a decent one, you better be ready to study your butt off. You get a quiz every week, and she tells you that she's making them hard so you'll do poorly. If you must take her read every flipping night and write down every single word on the over head. Oh, if you want to do decent on her tests... she'll give you these terms in your syllabus that will appear on your test. You've got about 40 per test and only 17 will show up on the test. Look up the terms, write them on post-its, and stick them on the page where you got the information. This will help you greatly. Good luck.

Dr. Reber has been teaching since the 1970's and it is time for her to retire. Her tests are almost impossible to do well on because she picks subjects that are only talked about slightly in the reading and not disscussed at all in class. Her tests are also primarly based upon your take on the subject and not the facts, that is to say, if you do not agree with her you will not do well. All in all her class was not even remotly intresting, this is the first time I took a class at Shippensburg and learned nothing. I would not waste my time with another of her classes.

Okay, so here's the deal, if history's your whole life then this is the class for you. Oh, it's not?! Well, don't expect her to think that. You see, she gives a lot of busy work that's sometimes pointless. Oh, and she'll put you in groups to discuss history, and you don't get to pick the people you work with. She also gives a list averaging from 60-100 terms to know for each exam...and by the way, she'll only give you 17 of them and you have to identify 14 of them. Her exams don't include any multiple choice questions. Essentially her exams are all essays. She'll give you a quiz every week, she gives you the questions she'll ask in the syllubus. She gives you opportunities to make up 2 sh*tty quiz grades or just for extra credit, by going to a cultural event and writing up something on it. I stress you take those opportunities. She's tough, and honestly if I wasn't good at history this class would have majorly kicked my ass. She's boring in class, most of the time...don't let her catch you not paying attention, she'll get you in the end for that. Get used to hearing, "I note that...in effect", those are her two favorite phrases. I couldn't even count how many times she said those two phrases, I always lost count. Dr. Reber is a nice person, I will give her that, she's just not that amiable in class. And talk in class, a big portion of your grade is participation.

Although I did receive a good grade, her class was extremely demanding and somewhat difficult. Basically it took up all of my time for the semester and my grades in other classes suffered from it. Her quiz's aren't too hard but when it comes to her exams, WATCH OUT! Her final exam made me want to hang myself before the test was over. My brain couldn't process anymore. But if you want to learn a lot she's the teacher to take because trust me you'll have to know every little detail about everything.

Dr. Reber is an incredibly brilliant person, who assumes that you are as well. She's really nice (if you care about the class)but she dosent always understand that her students have more than one class. If you are finding yourself with loads of free time, that you would love to spend studying for weekly essay quizes and enormous exams, go for it, you will get a lot out of it. If you have a job, like to sleep, or are taking other classes... don't do it... your GPA will suffer (if not in her class, in all your other neglected classes).

Ok, I definately will admit that Dr. Reber knows her shiz, but wow is she hard! You have readings to do all the time and about 3 questions per reading assignment which isn't bad. However, you better pay close attention to the reading questions and know them and EVERY detail about them because one of those questions will be your quiz question on Fridays. Her tests are INSANE! Umm yeah, 80 some terms and only 14 annonymous ones are on the test, and you have to know who, what, when, where and why! You have to know like 5 religions and only 3 are on the test and you have to know EVERYTHING about those religions. And if I hear the words "in effect" or "and we note" one more time...! She even writes that in her e-mails! WHO DOES THAT! Although I do have to say that Dr. Reber is a TOTALLY different person outside of class. I went to her office to talk to her about one of my tests and it's like you're talking to someone else. She is nice outside of class and is willing to help you out, but in class she can be a bia and everything is STRICTLY history and if you're heard talking about anything BUT history in your discussion groups, you pay for it! Bottom line, she's okay, I don't think I would take her again. Make sure you participate in class during discussions, especially about the reading questions the night before.

Wow, if I had to hear "In effect" one more time I probably would have had to be committed into an insane asylum! She gives you 3-4 questions each night on assigned readings and then she choses one of those questions to give you at the end of the week for a quiz. So, yes, you will have a quiz every week unless you have an exam that week. Her exams are ridiculous. You have to know 40-60 terms for each exam but she will only actually give you about 10-15 of them. Then you have to know 4-6 relgions for each exam, stating their beliefs and their significance. You do this same thing for empires, only you state their political, economic, social, and religious aspects. And you have no idea how HARD the final is. Avoid this class at all costs. If you do have to take her, answer questions in class and talk alot in discussion groups because she grades hard on class participation/discussion and it accounts for 15% of your grade. It doesn't matter if your answers are right or not, she'll still count it as participating. And DO the work, don't slack or you'll fall behind and it's next to impossible to catch back up!

I have never worked longer and harder in my entire life than I did in Dr. Reber's class. I'd like to think that the hardest work I've ever done would get me an A, but alas...Anyway...You get 2 tests, both of which are like finals and require literally hours upon hours of studying to be prepared for. And if you're not prepared for the test, you'd best be prepared to die because there are no multiple choice or matching, everything must be written out. She takes class discussion into consideration for your overall grade, but you have to read the 30 or so pages of homework per class period to be ready for it, plus write a one page journal about each one. You also have 2 books to read and a paper to write, in addition to the normal homework you get every night. If you're into history, that's cool, you might enjoy this...But even so...This class ate up SOOOO much of my time that I had none left for ANYTHING else, be it other classes or personal matters. She really needs to think to herself...If every professor required what she does for their classes, it would literally be impossible to do it, even if you have no life (much like myself). All that being said, she definitely IS a nice person, and she definitely does know what she's talking about...But she needs a reality check. It's simply too, too much. If I were a history major, I might take her...Otherwise, forget it.

Damn this teacher is impossible. I think she likes to fail people. You can only miss two classes and if your sick forget it there are no reasons not to go to class. You can have the god damn plague but you better be at reber's class on time. Study Study Study at least 50 hours a test. Im no dumb ass who is a slacker i have an A/B average in every class so take my word for it run. You will pound youir head against the desk and pray that you knock yourself out just so you dont have to hear her say in effect for the 34th time that class.

I honestly could not count the number of times that woman has said...in effect, note, and basically. Those are the only words in her vocabulary. When she doesn't know what to say she throws in effect in there. She is so boring and irritating. She definetly favors the ass kissers so if you want the benifit of the doubt, and a better grade...pucker up. She's not so bad outside of class but in class she is the devil. If you wanna get an A in her class you gotta be one of her favorites or study a month in advance for her exams.

well where do i start? if you dont kiss her ass she gives you a bad grade on your essays. i dont care if you write the damn text book word for word, if you don't pucker up and kiss her ass she will give you a C. then the lisp. this mix between a drunken slur and the monotone voice and lots of words with s's in them makes class really really hard to grasp. so i would make a suggestion to rebers future students. if it is manditory that you are to be in her class SHOOT YOURSELF while there is still time

If you want to kill yourself, day in and day out and not get anything out of it then go ahead and take this witch. I have never had to study 200 terms for an exam, knowing that she was going to ask only 18 for the test. Her exams are only possible to do well if you kiss her a** or study for 1000's of hours. The worst teacher on campus.

Unless you are a one of the smartest people on this campus, I advise you not to take this prof. I think it is definately going to be the hardest class I have ever, or will ever have throughout my college education. For her second exam I studied a whole week. It was probably a total of 30 hours I spent studying and only got a 36%. I am by far dumb and do well in other classes, but this class is nearly impossible to get a C in.

Tests are impossible unless you have a photographic memory. Tough grader on papers. She is not personable or friendly AT ALL. Things I liked about Dr. Reber and this class:

On the first day of class, Reber was quite intimidating. Quizzes every week, huge tests and an essay make up your grade which sucks. The tests are impossible, you will have to know 100 terms for each test and there will also be about 3 essay questions per exam. None of the tests or quizzes are multiple choice so you need to study for hours to even get a C or D on the exams. The final was impossible because it was cumulative and there was a map where you had to identify states, rivers, oceans and cities, none of which we had done in class. Overall, not too bad if you at least put in 10 hours of studying for each exam, but plan on getting a D if you do that little of studying.

if you like to write a lot in class (which i don't) you should be absolutely fine. All we did was write; every weekly quiz, and the crazy-ass tests. We went through a 500 page book in the semester, not to mention four sub-books. Although she does give the quiz question for every quiz in the sylabbus, it's really hard to keep up with the reading and provide discussion for general classroom and groupwork. the final was 30 terms to write a paragraph about, fill in a map, and THREE ESSAYS in TWO HOURS. this does sound like a negative comment, but it's really only the tests that would bring you down, and there's only two before the final. So if you've got her, good luck!

This is by no means a cakewalk. She is very hard, and expects a lot out of you. There is a paper, but it's only 1000 words. Quizzes are easy, and I've managed to get perfect on almost all of them. Tests are damn near impossible, but if you put some work into it, you can get a B on it. She knows the subjects in and out, so if you do have a question, she'll be able to give you a 5 minute answer on it. She is very approachable outside of class, and really is willing to help. Doesn't neccessarily make up for the fact that her class takes away from you doing work in other classes.

first off, let me say that this prof. def. KNOWS HER SHIT! she gives you a LOT of information, but it only helps you in the end. she gives you all the reading questions to study from, these questions are the essay questions. I don't know any other teacher that gives you the questions ahead of time, the only thing is you don't know which question she'll choose, but you can pretty much narrow it down. her classes are very hard, but she is always willing to help you. p.s., attendance is REQUIRED, I learned that the hard way...so make sure you go to class. but if you are looking for a class that you'll actually LEARN something from, take her classes. she's actually really interesting.

A page to page and a half "journal entry" AKA essay is due for every class. And middle of the way through a 4-5 page paper is required on a "journal entry", and guess what you still have to keep doing the "journal entries" every day while your doing this paper. Her tests consist of appoximately 75 terms. She requires you know (what, when, where, and why) for each. And 7 prompts which you need to list 5-10 facts. There are 2 tests and a final. Each test is 10% of your final grade and the final is 30% of your final grade. That makes 50% of your final grade. Oh, and the final is cumulative. I worked harder in this class than I did in all of my other classes combined. That is by no means an exaggeration. Ask anyone that had her. And naturally my other grades suffered because of this class.
