The man is simply awesome. He puts so much effort into making the class as enjoyable for everyone that it's astounding. He is funny, exuberant, and loves what he teaches. I have NEVER had any musical classes and have absolutely no musical background, and I studied for his tests for about an hour and listened to the 5 or 10 musical pieces per test for about two hours, and I got a 95%, 92%, and 93% on the first three tests. He ALSO offers plenty of easy extra credit if you do struggle. Go to three concerts and turn in your ticket stubs, and don't miss more than one class, and you get 40 extra credit points. That's 17% added to your final grade. You can't ask for a more generous, exciting teacher for a music class.

Dr. Ritz is a little nutty, and sometimes he just creeped me out. But he can be a real funny guy. He is super energetic...its impossible to fall asleep in his class. Tests are not that easy, but if you study and you know your stuff, there is no reason you should not get at least a B in his class. Overall, he was a great prof for this course.

D.Ritz is a cool guy and very entertaining teacher. He definitely wakes you up. His exams are a little challenging but as long as you listen to the cd's and study a bit you should do okay. But he is very strict about attendance so your grade will definitely go down if you miss a lot. Overall, hes a cool guy and knows what hes talking about. Id take him again.

This man is completely hilarious, whether he knows it or not. He is WILD about music, and wants you to be too. He is so dramatic and waves his arms and runs around the classroom. He really wants to make sure you're into it as well. He is extremely helpful, and will always ask the class to pick his brain. He LOVES questions. There is lots of opportunity to get extra credit (3 max concerts & excellent attendance- you can miss one day and he'll still give you 10 extra bonus points). All together he can give you 40 bonus points. He is always around and LOVES to help, and set you up with study partners. His tests you MUST study for, but if you put a couple hours in you will be just fine.

He is very into what he teaches, and you can see his enthusiasm in the classroom. There are listening parts to each of the 4 tests, and you have to know a lot of information about songs and different types of music. But he is a very nice man, and he is entertaining in class. You can miss 3 of his classes, but if you go to concerts you can get extra credit. His was not the easiest class I had this semseter, but it wasn't too bad. I would recommend taking him if you're going to take Intro to Music.

Don't think this class is your average general music class. It's not. You're required to almost "memorize" songs for the tests, which are a bit difficult, but if you sit down for half an hour and just listen to them you should be alright. Dr Ritz is a super nice guy. He's extremely available out of class and holds a lot of study sessions. His tests are a bit difficult, but you can go to concerts for extra credit. His powerpoints get kind of boring after awhile but they provide a lot of information on music history. I say take him. Just don't think you don't have to study or show up for class. Studying and attendance is required.

Dr. Ritz was a wonderfully animated teacher! You can tell he loves his job! He keeps all of the PowerPoint slides up on his web-site, and provides a study guide for all of the material. The listening requirement was the hardest part, as we had to correctly identify the artist and any other important information in relation to the music, and his exams are all multiple choice. He gives 30 points in extra credit for concert attendance + class attendance combined, and this helps with the exam grades if needed. Most of us in the class could have failed the final and still come out with a pretty decent grade (I did fairly well despite knowing that). I enjoyed that part as it became less stressful when taking the final exam. I would recommend this class with this teacher for anyone who needs it as a gen. ed. He makes the material fairly interesting, and tries to keep the class involved. Thanks for a great semester Dr. Ritz!

Dr. Ritz is quite possibly the most dynamic and fun professor ever. He always gives personal anecdotes and elaborates with great detail. He fluctuates his voice quite often to keep the class entertained and attentive. He is always in a good mood and is always available outside of class. He says some of the funniest things I have ever heard. Dr. Ritz also gives very vivid imagery when explaining the time periods and life styles of composers, even though he was not there! Dr. Ritz is awesome! He also gives extra credit.

Ritz is awesome, he gets excited about the stuff and you'll learn about a lot of other things outside of music too. (dont worry, not on tests he just likes to share his knowledge.)My favorite teacher yet!

Dr. Ritz is the only professor that lived up to my expectations of college. The class was reasonably fast paced, he talked to the students as adults for the most part, and he rewards hard work. He is genuinely excited about his class and loves the subject he teaches. If you keep and open mind and listen to the music it is hard not to get excited too. The tests are difficult, and he doesn't curve anything, but anything above a 90 in his class gets a 4.0. If you're willing to put forth the effort and enjoy a good class and a teacher with a good sense of humor, this is a wonderful class.

If you had Intro... you'd know that the Erlking was the 1800's version of the Boogie Man in Germany. As stated, Dr. Ritz is most certainly NOT the Boogie Man that some posters would like you to think. I found the class to be one of my favorites bar none! He is very well informed and God help him for trying to instill some educated thought about music into each and every student! He is readily available if you need to get him a message or recieve one and I am unsure if there is another prof on campus that could be so gentlemanly. PS: I felt the PP presentations which he uses to teach class were awesome...it helped in understanding the big picture.

Dr. Ritz is one of the best professors i've had at Ship, his tests can be difficult, but if you've listened to the music, the listening part won't be that hard. The part of the test on his notes is really easy. He puts all his lectures on powerpoints, which can be accessed on the network, overall a great guy and a great prof.

Dr. Ritz has coffee in his veins instead of blood. Its not really a bad thing he's just really hyper all the time. At least he cares about what hes teaching and he tries to get us to care too. His class can get difficult at times but its not a bad intro course. Most of the test material is from the notes (which are all powerpoint so you dont have to stare at a boring b/w chalk board.) so take good notes. The majority of the test material is from the notes but there is some important stuff in the book. You can miss up to 4 of his classes with out penalty. The good thing about him is that he lets you go to any one of his intro to music classes no matter what your scheduled time is. So those of you that get stuck with the 8am's dont worry you can go to his noon class if you want. You do have to go to performances out side of class but they arent too bad and there is a good amount of extra credit you can get from it. He's definately one of the better profs i got this semester. He actually makes his lectures seem not that boring. He knows a lot of crap other than music that he always throws at you all the time. Listening is probably the most important thing in the class (some of which must be done on your own.) The tests are about 60% listening and 35% notes and 5% book. Not too bad of a class.

This was a bad class for me because I have no interest what so ever in music. His test are pretty hard. You need to know your music well. Over half the test is listening. He's also very intelligent.  He's a very good teacher, a bit eccentric, but that just makes class more interesting. There are a lot of opportunities for extra credit, for instance if you only miss one class you'll recieve 10 points. Going to the required concerts aren't that bad, and if you go to more, you get more extra credit. He tries to make class interesting. Make sure you take notes!! Listening is imperative!!! As long as you study and attend class, you'll do fine.

9 of 34 students found this review helpful.

Ritz is very into the material you're studying, which you'll quickly find out. Just as quickly though you will come to learn that even though this is a 100 level course, and literally EVERYONE is taking it as a Gen Ed Arts credit, he teaches it with the same vigor he would if every single student in his class were a Music major. The class requires an incredible amount of studying, by which I mean sitting and listening to music. He expects you to be able to pick out themes and be able to recognize what instruments are being played, which is very challenging, and if you have no musical background, you will have a hard time. I managed only a C- and it took a tremendous amount of effort to get just that. if you are dead set on taking Music, try it with a different professor, but if at all possible take an art class.

Honestly, he is a funny man, and he definitely has a passion for music. BUT, regardless of all the positive comments, he is the hardest teacher Ive had as a gen ed. He wants you to memorize a random part of a song and explain exactally what you are listening to. He never EVER let us out 1 minute early, it was always 1 hour and 15 minutes. His class is fun the first few weeks bc he is so insanely funny/weird you can't help but laugh...but then it just gets old.. Hes a very sweet man, he just expects you to know ALL OF his meterial. If you want to take someone, take Shover. He is GREAT, and not that hard, you just have to memorize vacab words and a few songs..but im telling you ...if you take ritz you will regret it

I want to be clear that this comment has nothing to do with this man's character...cause he is a great guy all in all. Very nice man, and willing to "try" and help students. To be honest, this class is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. I am not saying do not take it, I am just writting this to warn anybody who wants to believe that his class is easy. I promise, if you chose to take this class...when you are studying for his exams and have no idea what the hell is going on...you will remember this message and say to yourself, I should have listened. Seriously, the exams are out of this world. Now I am a str A student, and I always put in a good amount of time studying for whatever exam I am about to take, but I honestly put more time into one exam for this class than I ever thought possible. There is soooo much info on the exams. Each exam is 90-100 questions...and the listening section is ungodly hard. I went to his office over and over and over again asking question after question about the listening part of the exams because I did not feel ready for them even after studying for about 10-15 hrs. That is no lie. I guess I could have got by with a C, but I am the type of person who wants an A..especially in a intro class. Seriously, there has to be an better way to test students in that class...good luck if you choose to take this class with Ritz...but I am sure there are other professors at Ship who teach intro to music as it should be taught...as a gen ed!!! not as a Grad course!

I am a senior and I have been on the Deanís list every semester that I have been in college... but not after I took Ritz. Ineffective professors are frequently described as disorganized, unclear, and indifferent. Thatís why when I entered this class I was so excited, because Dr. Ritz is none of those things. I found out that there is a teacher shortage across the United States and qualifications for professors are being lowered...and it has never been more apparent than with Dr. Ritz. He gives you a study and listing guide... which he should not even offer to students because they do not remotely help on his exams. I was expecting to take an intro to music class, I felt like I was taking a Graduate music class. Honestly, unreal. I wish you luck if you take his class. If you chose to believe the positive comments like I did, all I have to say is "I told you so."

If you're going to take Dr. Ritz, then do it early in your college career, or better yet, just take someone else. I waited until my senior year to take this class, figuring it would be an easier class that would alleviate some stress from all my upper-level classes, but it turns out I had to put as much time into this stupid class as all my 300 and 400-level classes. When I realized I needed more time to work on my other classes, I had no choice but to cut back on doing work for Ritz's class, and it killed my grade because he expects you to make his class your top priority. He also made us learn two lessons by ourselves on our own time for the final exam because he didn't have the time to teach them to us (which could be explained by his constant bragging about how he is also a pilot or how his son called him over the weekend and is enjoying college). Then I have friends who have other profs for Intro to Music and don't have to know half the crap I do. Dr. Ritz is readily available outside class, but come on, Intro to Music isn't the type of class you should have to get too much extra help for. He's a nice guy, but expects too much. We're not all music majors.

This prof is very nice and easy to get ahold of but he is one of the down right hardest teachers I ever had here at ship. It is rediculous when he plays a portion of a song for the test and you have to know exactally which movement it is from and who the composer is who wrote it. It sounds easy, but it really isnt when you have to do this and memorize fifteen songs

Dr. Ritz, or "DWR" as he likes to refer to himself, is the absolute WORST porfessor I have ever had. Every class is a stupid powerpoint presentation that he created himself. He cares more about these presentations and making them perfect than he does about teaching. His tests are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. You also have to attend concerts which really suck. If the Intro to Music kids didn't have to go to the concerts, barely anyone would be there. DO NOT TAKE!!! Ritz is cocky and arrogant. I would suggest taking another prof cause his tests were bull shit when it came to memorizing pointless info. Take him if you are majoring in music...he loves what he does for a living.

I took this class as a gen. ed and I was honestly looking for an easy A. Even though he's a nice guy and cracks you up in class his tests are very challenging. If you're into music take him, if not I wouldn't.

This is a fun class and waking up to Dr. Ritz was a great experience for my first semester. He's always animated and he had us clapping our hands, listening to lots of different music, and watching videos. It's a fun class. The tests are difficult, you have to know your stuff. If you are willing to work and like music this class is for you.

Dr. Ritz taught this intro course like everyone in the class was a music major. His tests were really hard. You have to know the book well & know the music itself well. But he does give extra credit if you go to on-campus concerts. Without those, my grade would have been much lower. Dr. Ritz is a really nice guy, really into music,.. but does reach this class like it's a 300 level.
