I had Shover during the fall semester and I thought it would be a really easy class and I'd get an easy A. WRONG. He doesn't give homework ever, which is awesome but his exams are extremely hard. I studied a lot for these exams and got C's in them, and I did extra credit and attended all the concerts that were required. In the end I still ended up with a C. More than half of our class FAILED this course and many had to drop this class. Shover is very nice man and I don't have anything agaisnt him but what good does it make when I don't do well? He said "what can I do to help you guys do well?" we said "add a word bank" He said "then that would mean you guys are stupid" But if we fail we're not? I'm confused. Take him if you wanna learn but like me, I'm a psychology major it was just a gen ed course. Thank goodness I had A's in the rest of my classes that way my GPA wasn't too horrible.

He gives you exactly what you need to know for the tests in note form. As long as you show up to take the notes you'll do well, hes also insanely funny and although the performances are annoying to go to, its an easy way to get a good grade/extra credit.

Take him.... Seriously, take him. He's such a sweet man, and he is so incredibly talented. He is so intelligent, I really look up to him. Even if you aren't a BIG music fan, who cares, take all his classes. You will appreciate music, I swear.

Dr. Shover expects you to learn something... I know.. who would have thought. If you attend class and take notes on the items that he reviews and repeats during review sessions the tests are easy, but you have to study. Spelling counts on his tests so practice the spellings of composer's names.

Shover is an awesome teacher who makes learning music easy and fun. However, you've really gotta study to pass his tests. I studied what I thought would be a good enough amount and ended up with a 57. Also, he's started taking attendance, with 3 "freebies" and after that your grade literally plummets. As long as you go to class, take all the notes, and study A LOT you should be fine. But for a Gen. Ed, it is rather hard with very few grades.

Shover is probably the best professor out there. He's so funny and makes jokes about stuff all the time. I actually learned something from his class while laughing the whole time. You do need to bring your notes, he spends a lot of his classes reviewing. His tests aren't easy unless you look over your notes...but they aren't hard either!

Shover is the man. There is absolutley no homework besides attending 3 concerts on campus (which isn't hard because he provides you with a list of about 15). The class atmosphere is very relaxed and half the time all you do is listen to music. His notes are simple. His 3 exams suck though, they are 100% fill in the blank. Warning: if you don't put in about 2 hours studying before an exam you will fail this course. Otherwise, TAKE HIM IF YOU GET THE CHANCE!

I had blaine for intro to music, but also am involved in musical organizations he directs. I have to say he is my favorite prof of any here at ship. He understands that most of the students arent really that interested in classical and baroque music. But he is effective in making his classes fun and interesting. He's not strict about attendance but you need the notes for exams, but if you miss a class he goes over the notes the next class before he moves on to any other information. He's understanding and fun to listen to. He makes silly jokes in class to keep it amusing. You are required to see 3 musical concerts but thats not bad. If you ever get a chance go see one of his concerts even if you arent in the class, they are great!! Definitely an awesome professor!!

Dr. Shover was very understanding of the fact that his Intro to Music class was a gen ed. The fact that he didnt try to shove the material down my throat, like so many before him, is part of the reason i half enjoyed his music class, even though thats not really my kind of thing. I learned surprisingly much about music, composers, types of compositions, etc. He's always in a good mood and has a good sence of humor, overall a fun guy to be around. I would definitely recommend him for that class

As a musician, I figured Blaine's class would be extremely easy for me. I was wrong. But it was still a great experience. Blaine is a very kind man who is extremely understanding. The class is made up of three exams and you have to attend some concerts. Thus, you need to study, but Blaine gives good notes and even reviews them the following class before proceeding. Like I said, it wasn't cake, but he's a great prof, and it's not overly stressful.

Dr. shover is a nice old man (but dont let him hear you say that). he actually succeeded in making me remotely interested in classical music, the complexity of it and all that what not. careful of his tests though. 50 questions fill in the blank. take notes and KNOW those notes. my only regret is that i probably wont ever get to have him as a teacher again.

Dr. Shover is one of the nicest profs that Shippensburg has. He loves to tell jokes and his class is as interesting as you can get for a intro to music class. You have to go to three concerts, and if you go to 5 you can get extra credit. 3 tests including the final, but he makes it really clear what is going to be on the tests. They are fill in the blank. The listening is the hardest part of the class, but if you get that down, you're golden. I'd take him again

Dr. Shover's class is a really good one. Everyone has to take this or something like it for gen ed requirements so take Shover, he really is great. You have to listen to music and be able to identify the time period and stuff but the notes he gives in class are so good that you don't even really have to do the listening. He takes attendance everyday but says he doesn't penalize for it, he just expects you to be there. You also have to attend 3 concerts on campus during the semester but there's so many, it's not difficult at all and you can do extra for extra credit. The class is good, he's really passionate about it. Take Shover, the class is great.

One of the best profs in Ship. He has a cool sense of humor, great teaching style, sensible tests, and enjoys his work. He does a great job of talking about the subject and makes sure to learn everyones name and keep them involved in the course (hard when its a huge gen ed lecture hall). He needs a raise in salary imo.

Test aren't easy, 50 X choice, some listenening and spelling counts! But overall too nice of a guy not to give a positive comment.

Honestly, I can say that I appreciate the realm of music much more because of Dr. Shover. He has interesting stories to tell in class. He also lets you know what he wants you to memorize! How much easier can it get than that? His tests are not difficult. Overall, He knows his stuff. I would take him again if I could.

We have 3 exams, thats it. If you do bad on the first 2 you're screwed trying to study for the final, not mention the exams are near impossible because they're fill in the blank without a word bank or any thing to help. And you have a required listening part where you have to memorize music from certain time periods, some pieces of which are close to 30 mins long. Only way to get extra credit is by going to see shows, thats only after you go to the required 3 which isn't bad, but if you're like me you'll get screwed with the extra credit because the shows you planned on going to got canceled. Great guy outside the classroom, he just assumes we all go into his class with knowledge of music and its history. Assumes too much of his class. Intro to music should not be this hard. All the positives focus on his personality and what not, but they all mention how hard it is, don't be fooled just because there is a lot of positives.

Dont let all the positives next to his name fool you, if you are not interested in music and dont study an insane amount you will not do well in this class. Look at all the positive comments they are all about how his class is laid back and he doesnt take attendance, well yeah thats all fun and nice but his test are a damn joke. HE IS A MUSIC NAZI and expects you to know absolutly everything that comes out of his mouth, his test are all fill in the blank with a listening section thats usually rediculous. Yeah hes a nice guy but I'd rather have an easy dick then a hard nice guy for a Gen Ed.
