I did not choose to take Dr. Bastin; when I registered for the course it was supposedly being taught by Dr. Siahaan, with whom I took Macro and got a B-. When I checked my class schedule before semester started and saw that it had been changed to Dr. Bastin I checked this site and was horrified. That being said, he is the best econ teacher I've ever had. If you're expecting to cram and regurgitate information for the test, don't take him- he expects you to understand and APPLY what you've learned. He gives you the exam questions ahead of time with the caveat that he will not answer any more questions about concepts on the exam after doing so- he doesn't just hand out answers or grades. He also does not take attendance and he couldn't care less if you show up, but to do well you NEED to go to class and he knows this. He tells you so on the first day. If you pay attention during class and do the work, there is no reason you can't succeed in his class. If you want to actually LEARN economics, and I don't know, succeed at your future job, take him.

Dr. Bastin is a very nice professor. I won't deny it, his classes aren't easy at all. For macro, you only have three exams that make up 95% of your grade and the other 5% is doing the homework out of the book and then during class, he randomly calls on people to go up to the front of the room and give their answer in front of the whole class. I thought the material was very interesting and as long as you paid attention in class, read the book, and did the homework problems he assigned, you shouldn't have a huge problem. His tests consist of about five or so short answer/essay-like questions. I would definitely recommend taking Dr. Bastin.

He's extremely intelligent, and he's a great guy. I didn't study really, but I won't bitch like everyone else. Everyone complains like, "oh you gotta take notes and go to class, and read" well what did you think you had to do in college you idiots? I'm sorry he doesn't lay it out there like some other professors because he actually cares about your well being, I dunno, I got a D in his class and I didn't do anything literally, but I won't cry about it on some website anonymously

I had Dr Bastin Class at 8am in the morning. Everyone told me ahead of time including my adviser that I will probably not get an A in the class. Good thing I didn't listen to them. I was very nervous taking his class because I never took an economics class in my life plus I am a non traditional student and this was my first semester transferring in to Ship. Yes it was a challenge but if you work hard, come to class, ask question. And study hard you will do fine. FYI if you form a study group it will be very helpful.

Honestly, Bastin is the best prof I have ever had! His tests are not impossible but very very very hard!!! I failed every one of his tests but still ended up with a D. If you PARTICIPATE IN CLASS you will do fine! I never missed a class because it was so interesting and you learn so much! Great prof if you don't mind honest work!

Bastin is one of the funniest and most laid back professors I've ever had...he doesn't take attendance but that's because you NEED to be there to understand the material and do well in the class. Your grade is based only on three tests and each test is about 7 questions long...they are essay-draw a graph to explain though and you'll get better grades. I missed class all the time in both courses and managed to get an A both times but that's because I got the concepts. You can't bullsh*t his tests... you hafta understand the material. But relax, if you participate a lot, he knows your name, and he likes you...you'll do fine...

Doctor Bastin is pretty hard, but only if you don't pay attention and don't attempt to do the work. He gives homework a little less than once a week. If you attempt it and then learn how to do it when he goes over it in class, it makes the tests a lot easier. He also curves like a mad man, so if you're smarter than most your peers, Bastin is the man for you. If you're not, I'd say steer clear

Bastin Is a hard professor but you will be challenged to learn. You cant just slide through his class. If you take the notes he gives and study often you will learn a ton. Try not to miss class or get behind bc there is not much chance of catching up. I have had him for three straight semesters and hes great.

Awesome guy, tough class. If you've had econ. before you'll get the concepts just fine. Even if you don't get it, he's all about you asking questions and won't stop explaining till he's sure you got it. I've never liked going to 8 am classes but he woke me up and made things fun and interesting. If you go to class and make sure you understand things you don't even have to study for tests, its common sense...just becomes natural.

First off don't get me wrong this class was hard as hell, but I did learn a lot which helped me in managerial and made it easy as pie. Bastin will not fail you if you try. Attempt everything, NEVER REFUSE TO GO TO THE BOARD!!!!! Always go even if you have no clue, say "i didn't get this answer but i can try it" and if you don't even know how to start it he will assist you! I failed every test and still ended up with a B. Its a very doable class and if youre like me you have no choice but to take him, so suck it up and get through it there is only 2 econ classes!

Does he require some work? Yes. Do you actually have to understand concepts and not just recite useless facts on the test? Yes. But honestly, this is college, you can't expect to just show up, have a pulse, and get an A. Only take Dr Bastin if you are capable of putting some effort in this class. If you do, you will pass the class. Ask him for help, he find's creative way's to make it possible to pass even if you fail the first test miserably. He is also quite hilarious if you pay attention. Don't skip class just because he doesn't take attendance however. I learned something in every class. You will also remember everything he teaches you. Excellent prof. You will be a better student if you take him.

Always show up to class with the homework and participate. Ask tons of questions if you don't understand something. As long as you work hard you will not fail his class.

Dr. Bastin was great. He'll help you whenever you need it at his office. His exams are just like the home work questions. The paper is a lot of work, but he doesn't expect it to be really, really good. The final exam was a take home Excel project which was, again, just like the homework. Plus he has a personality. Going to his class was something I looked forward to. Coming into his class, I thought it'd be so tough from what I read here. But, honestly, it was one of my easier ones.

When I started this class, I thought it was going to be BORRRRINNNNGGG, but I was surprised. Dr. Bastin made this subject extremely interesting and enjoyable. He made things that I had never really understood before easy to understand and he applied them to real life situations. You have to read the book and do the exercises, AND GO TO CLASS, if you want to do well. Other than the exercises, which he doesn't collect, the only other grades are two exams and a final. He expects you to do the work yourself and learn the material. He won't hold your hand or tell you what to do. If you are self-motivated, you'll do fine. If not, don't take his class.

Bastin, in my opinion, is among the most intelligent professors on campus. You should feel privileged to be in a position to choose him as a professor. Everyone complains on how hard he is, and I admit he is hard. But he makes you think, more than a lot of other professors. Don't be discouraged after the first test if you do bad...because most people do. It's only because he forces you to think in a somewhat different way, like I said before. You're not going to attend class, remember a bunch of material, and repeat it to him. Instead, you are going to participate in class, be taught the material, learn the material, and be able to explain the material. You don't have to be the smartest student to do well. My GPA is around a 3.0 and I was able to earn an A in intermidiate micro and a B in intermediate macro with him. So don't listen to the easy-riders in the negative section and take Bastin if possible. You'll enjoy it, whatever the class may be.

I find it unbelievable that so many people give this guy negative comments when much worse teachers are given nothing but good comments. First of all, DO NOT drop him after the first test. He curves very generously. Secondly, ask questions when you're stuck. You don't have to be his pet, just make an effort to understand stuff. I was always lost in this class, but that's only because the material is pretty tough. Avoid economics altogether if you don't have to take it, but if you end up with him, and are willing to give the effort, he's really not that bad.

Although most have complained that his tests were tough, I found the tests very accessible. All he expects is that you show up, do the excercises and at least try to understand the material. He will go over examples and material from the classes if asked. I'd say that those who failed the class were the ones who didn't bother to go. Some people in the class were upset that his tests were essay/true or false. I found the tests refreshing considering that it was a gen. ed. I felt that he treated his class fairly. Those who did the work did well, and those who didn't....

He can come across as a real jerk, but he makes alot of sense, you just have to do what he expects. I had him for all 3 of my economics(Princ of Micro[C], Inter Micro[B], & Princ of Macro[A] in that order) This is what I have learned: 1.)GO TO CLASS! 2.)DO THE EXERCISES! 3.)On tests: Answer the statement, Define EVERYTHING! But a bright spot is, every year I had him he curved 1 of the 3 exams at least 30 points. PS: Bad things about him: He favors girls who participate alot in class or who are just really friendly or easy to pick on. He WILL pick on certain kids. Partial credit is a gift, so do your best to earn it. He is easy to get off topic. Finally, DO NOT PISS HIM OFF, cause he will yell and look like he is gonna explode.

If u sit in his class and listen to what he says it makes sense. His tests are like 5 questions true, false or undecided. The key is explaining yourself, even if u are wrong but explain well you'll be ok. His class is more on analytical thinking then it is reading a book and spitting out what u memorize.  Great guy, funny and super smart. What I hated was you could go to class, do your homework totally right and then the test wasn't anything like the homework and most of the test was explaining yourself and we didn't practice that in class at the same level the tests were. He got very distracted and often just talked about the stock market and our economy and not the class.

Dr. Bastin is a horrible teacher who goes too fast and does not teach effectively at all. He gives you the questions to exams but refuses to answer any questions until after you take the exam. This means that if you do not understand a concept on the test you are F*$%ed. He wants you to be able to apply the concepts that you learn in class to the questions...understandable...but even if you get the right answer on the exams if you do not explain them completely perfectly he will dock you about 10 points. He also does application problems out of the book in class and he makes the students come up to answer them even if they have no idea what they are doing...but if you dont go up he deducts points from you. He is a complete jerk and I would do anything possible not to take him ever again :).

I should have dropped the class as soon as a saw the syllabus, or the lack there of. He has no specific dates. And like his syllabus, his tests are also very vague. He makes his own tests and NEEDS to learn how to make a test that tests knowledge rather than psychic ability. The questions make no sense at all and are way too vague to answer. The class average for the first test was a D. When going over the test, he talks about things he wanted on the test that were not asked for on the test. He diverges from the book and doesn't tell you to ignore the book until after the test. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF!

There are only two principles of econ classes so take the other teacher!!! Much easier and not as impossible.

Prof. Bastin doesnt even deserve to be called a Professor. He is not there to help you study because he recommends not studying, and the tests would be hard for an economist that has been in the business for 50 years. If you take him you are most likely to fail all 3 tests, and the only reason that you will pass is bc of curves, but thats not even guaranteed. On the second test of the semester, out of his 3 classes, 95% of the students failed.

He is arrogant and 3/4 of the class failed the first test miserably. Do not take him if you don't understand econ already.

He moves way too fast, expects you to understand way too much and grades ungodly hard so when he gives you your test back with a 44% on it he thinks heís giving the class a gift when he curves it to a passing grade. THANKS. He is a funny guy but last time I checked I think we came here to learn something and if not at least get a half decent grade if you do put in the time and effort to get one. Donít take this guy unless youíre going for the amusement factor. Oh yeah half your grade is based on him knowing who you are. If you do have to take this guy sit front and center and talk to him as much as possible. If he calls you to the board MAKE SURE you go up or else you lose points. Even if you dont have a clue he will help you and he will still give you the points.

Okay, here is the reality that I had to face when I took Dr. Bastin for Microeconomics, this is being very unbiased also: There were five chapters before the final, for the first two he was an excellent teacher. He reviewed the material well and made sure that it stuck with us. The last three chapters must have done something to him, he stopped teaching! I am serious. The last three chapters ran like this. He did not lecture the material, the class would do the end-of-chapter questions and we would spend class time answering them; the flaw was that WE HAD NOT BEED LECTURED ON THE MATERIAL WE WERE ANSWERING. It was very odd and consequently many students did very poorly when answering, or asked to answer, the questions. This should have been a warning bell to him, that if more than 80% of the class could not answer these questions that maybe he should address it. But he did not. He had to give my class a 20 point curve, to raise my grade from a 48 to a 68%, just for a little over 50% of the class to pass the exam. Which means that 50% of the class HAD to drop the course, as there was only a final and midterm, both worth equal points. Dr. Bastin is very knowledgable...he surely knows the material well; but in that is the flaw. If someone knows the material TOO well they can become arrogant and instinctively presume that everyone else should understand the material; this is really my only complaint against Dr. Bastin - he is very arrogant and does not put enough time into his students as he expects them to put time into his class. Which, really, is quite contrary to higher education! Nonetheless...he still is a nice professor to talk to, if you can get past his self obsessed arrogance. Peace...

Ok, yes, if you take this class and don't completely fail, there is a definite chance that you'll learn a lot about economics. BUT, what is the point of that unless you're an econ major? A year later I've forgotten almost everything I learned in this class, even though I had to work and study extremely hard to get the A which I desperately needed. This was a gen-ed class, but he teaches as though economics is the be all/end all of civilization. And he is extremely demeaning and tells off-color jokes. And his tests were ridiculously subjective. I mean, quite literally Alan Greenspan could've bombed some of the test questions because the answers could go either way and it just depended on the point of view... and you better just hope you have the same point of view as Dr. Bastin. Don't take him unless (like me) there is absolutely no other choice. Believe me, you'll regret it.

Bastin is a nice and funny guy, but he is a terrible teacher. His tests are ridiculous, his lectures are, at best, under-sufficient and, at worst, useless. He is, like I mentioned, a funny guy, he makes a lot of jokes and wise cracks, often aimed at students and often using obscene language, which doesn't bother me personally, but could be offensive to others.

Professor Bastin can not teach. I learned nothing in his class. Also if you give him the correct answer on a test but don't correctly explain it he will mark you wrong completely.

This prof is an A$$hole he thinks he is the man but he's a real jerk. He tells you the first day that he would put his C students up against any other classes A students. Right when he says this walk out of the class, drop the course right then and there. Even better than that don't even try to take this guy. He only teaches to the best students in the class. He also curses like no prof i have ever heard. If you can avoid this prof do it, take any other prof for this class other than him..Avoid at all Costs.

I would really try to stay away from this teacher. He really doesn't teach, the only things I have learned are from reading the book. You are expected to do problems after each chapter, it alternates; a learning day(shooting the shit) and then going over the homework day which takes an incredibly long time. The class average on the first test taken was a 35, and the second was a 23 both out of 100 possible points. If your not his pet he will f*ck you and give you no credit on his tests and has no problem giving zero's on tests either

Then i got my test back with a big old F on it. This dude is a really hard grader and i've heard lots of stories about him making girls cry in class. Never take this guy

Bastin is a horrible prof! He's so hard, yet he thinks he's so wonderful. I'm lucky I got a C in that class. His tests are impossible...I don't know where he gets the test questions from cause it's nothin you learn in class or from the book. Just stay away from him or you're gonna have a terrible time.

Don't say I didn't warn you. I'd like to keep postings on this website fair, so as a fair warning out there considering taking this professor, I'd think twice about it. He's a complete asshole, constantly embarrassing students in class. Almost all of his classes are at 8 AM too which doesn't help. I wouldn't recommend him, but sometimes there's no choice. Otherwise, go to every class and do ALL of the homework, and you better do it right or you'll get blasted.

Bastin is one of the funniest profs at ship hands down. Only problem is his exams are NOTHING like what you learn in class. He hands out a sheet with all the possible exam questions about a week before the exam date but unless you're friends with some of the smarter people in class, passing the exams is almost impossible. Best advice, when you get the exam reviews, get into a group and do it together. And dont wait til 2 nights before or expect to pull allnighters... that wont even save you.

Dr. Bastin is really, really tough. You WILL be putting your heart and soul into this class, so be prepared. His tests are really, reallllly hard! I put in at least 5+ hours trying to figure out what I was doing in the class and saw a tutor at least once a week. He is an awesome guy, but the way he runs the class needs some serious refinement. He has you read the chapter (PURCHASE THE BOOK), do the exercises, then has you come into class, give you his brief notes on the subject, and then calls on people to the board. I actually told him to his face that he should change the way he structures the class and he laughed. Anyway, he's okay, so if you like econ take him. If you know nothing, please try to take someone else.

This class is hard, and if you are looking for a free ride, forget it. But I will say that his class is very beneficial to those who need to take econ to build upon, ie all business majors who must take the next step; managerial econ. After having both I am glad I had Bastin for the first class because it made Mathis's class a hell of a lot easier than going into it without having done so much work and studying for Bastin's class. If you can handle the pressure hes not really all that bad. And class is not boring, he makes class bearable.

He is a tough prof. and tells you that from the beginning. He will tell you to read the chapters before class and stresses learning the info. In class he goes over the info and makes sure you really know the info. His tests are really hard. Most people miserably failed his first test. A good prof., if you can understand econ. I won't take him again. Make sure you understand that it will be a lot of work and challenging. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

I think his class is fun and i liked the discussions during class. I did learn a lot about economics. But.... i don't like the way the tests are designed. they are all essay. And one test had a single question worth like 40% of the exam. If you ignore his tests, he's a good prof. if you judge him on tests and grading, he's scary.

wow-what a character. He is a very interesting prof. He explains concepts in great detail--yet still hard to understand. Tests are extremely difficult! you must understand all concepts of the chapters to do well on tests. I would say for students who want an easy gen. ed requirement--don't take Dr. Bastin. Hes very challenging, but yet you still learn a great deal from him. I would put my C+ average up to any A students who took another prof. b/c thats how much I learned from Dr. B. Take him if you want to actually learn!

Bastin knows his stuff. He is the hardest teacher I have EVER come across but there is no doubt in my mind that this man is super smart. I probably won't pass his class but I did actually become intersted in economics....I wouldn't reccomend taking him if you want an easy A but if you want to learn a lot, he is a smart man. And I am a girl...he doesn't make them cry...he's funny and somewhat entertaining and if I was an economics major I think I would appreciate him more
