All the other comments that see him as a horrible teacher are wrong. His class is EASY!!! He gives you outlines for every single class... I mean come on. Quizzes once a week, extremely easy if you look over your notes and his outlines. Final was simple.

I think he is sooo misunderstood from the other comments-- perhaps I'm not the usual breed of everyday person- but for me he works great as my professor. I've had him for 2 classes so far, and plan on another-- he has also taught my son and my son plans to take another one of his classes- yes he can be a bit dull in the speaking area, but if you REALLY listen to him, you can hear another voice-- a man who has a lot to say and share, hidden in the corners of his soul. I'm a poet so maybe thats what it takes to see it, but I know another side of a man who I am so glad to have experienced! Take him if you're smart enough and open-minded enough to understand him.

Overall class was pretty boring and I didn't really like Skaff... but it was super easy! I didn't do any of the assigned readings and barely studied for the tests and still passed with a B. There are 2 papers, both extremely easy. The first is a list of study questions and you just have to pick 4 or so and answer them. As long as you look in your notes/book and provide details you will get an A on that paper. The second paper he made us do in a group for extra credit, and then assigned it to us as individuals. It is an opinionated essay and as long as you agree with his point of view and give details, you will get an A. The tests are a little more difficult but like I said it was an easy B. As long as you go to class and take notes you will be fine. Overall its not a bad class as long as you don't expect to learn anything!

Dr. Skaff's specialty and passion is in Asian history and it really showed in this class. He's not the most exciting guy to listen to, I'll admit that. You're required to read a lot of material but he structures the readings well and you should learn a lot if you do the readings. The only grades are participation and 4 papers. I can't speak for any other class, but if you are looking to take an Asian history course, he's the best to take.

A lot of people wrote that he's a despicable person, which he very well may be. However, if you want to take a relatively easy course to get some history credits out of the way, I recommend this professor. Every class is planned out on a powerpoint presentation which makes note-taking extremely easy. Reading the assignments helps a lot if you want some brownie points. He loves it when you volunteer. If you miss a day, everything is on his website. He spells out everything you need to know for tests and quizzes. My only problem that I had with this professor is that there weren't very many points in the semester. So, if you missed one quiz you were sunk. Dr. Skaff's class may have been a bore, but World History I isn't exactly the most exciting class period.

Dr. skaff was a very nice guy. He was boring as watching paint dry though. There are two papers, which aren't that bad and a mid term and a final which are essay and easily passed. I liked him because you always knew what was going on he is very organized and you don't have to take notes...you just print his outline off of his website...so take him and have a good sleep!!!

13 of 38 students found this review helpful.

Dr. Skaff is one of the worst professors I've had here. His grading system is so obscure and it's not outlined in the syllabus so when you get exams back you have no idea where you lost points and the comments he writes in the margins make no sense and are less than helpful. He only knows about 2 areas of the world (Middle East/Egypt and China) so that's all you talk about in an International Studies class, which is a shame. He also picks very boring books to read and very outdated ones; one book is from the 1980s and is about an international joint business venture which really wasn't relevant to today. If you don't have to take the class, I wouldn't recommend it jsut because of him. It's my minor and I absolutely love this stuff but he just makes it unbearable, which is unfortunate.

Skaff is CRAZY! I got stuck with him my first semester, and I dreaded going to that class every other day. All he does is drone on and on and on and on and on and...Sorry, I fell asleep. He has a powerpoint for each class, and does nothing but lecture from it...Every. Single. Class. You have to do 2 papers, which, thankfully, aren't too hard to write. One is based straight off his "lecture questions" which are on his website. The other is based right off of a Blackboard reading. However, don't let that fool you. He grades like an English teacher, AND expects you to put in every little detail that you thought was too trivial to put in the paper. He gives you two tests and the final, which are almost ALL essay. You get 10 matching questions, and then 2-3 "short essays" (they took me about a page of a large Blue Book each) and one "long interpretive (or comparative) essay" (they took me about 2-3 pages of a large Blue Book.) On his website, he gives about 2-3 questions for each lecture, and for each reading in the book (you have 2 readings for each class). He chooses TWO total lecture questions and TWO reading questions for the whole half-semester that the test is on for your essays on the test. You basically have to memorize the notes for the whole period (or in the case of the cumulative final, the whole entire SEMESTER) just to not use most of it. Yes, I got an A...but I worked my butt off, and (not to sound conceited) but I'm a pretty smart person (I've been in a gifted program since I was 8.) Avoid Skaff if humanly possible...I don't want anyone else to go through what I had to. [:

Wow. Just...Wow. This man makes me want to change my minor, I hope whoever teaches the International Studies Seminar is better than this because if not, I just might switch minors. This man is so boring. I would rather get stung by bees than go to his class. He does not explain anything at all and this is a 200 level introductory course. Somehow I got a B on the first test. I can't even put into words how awful this man makes this class. I feel the pain for anyone who has ever had him for ANY class.

Skaff is Terrible when it come to grading. I swear he gives essay tests just for the thrill of correcting your grammar and the funny thing is we all know that when we are getting our ideas together it will not always be organized so your tests will not always be perfect. Well Skaff will grade your paper like he murdered a couple people to get all of the damn red ink he uses. Its maddening when you look at grammar corrections he obviously took off for and your mind is screaming "I GAVE YOU POINTS YOU JERK!" His tests are about 80% Essay and 20% matching. Don't let that fool you because there will be 25 answers to choose from for about 10 questions, yeah. He teaches and it will be boring, I have never fallen asleep in a class but I fought hard to keep that with skaff. It is a very boring class. He gives 2 tests (30%), 2 papers (30%), Participation (10%), and of course your final is 30%.

I've never had Dr. Skaff as a teacher, however he is my advisor and I have to say I'm sure it's worse than the classes he teaches. The dude doesn't listen to my questions, and he put me a credit behind because he didn't pay attention, nor write down the degree I'm going for. I understand he has a lot of people to advise and God Speed to those people too man. It takes him a millennium to respond to my emails as well as my questions when I have my meetings with him. I had to take a course that I had to get someone in a different department to schedule for me and when I asked him who to go to, he said.."I don't know." I've heard he is a horrible teacher and I can account for the fact that he is the worst advisor, I recommend just avoiding him at all costs and if he is your advisor, change it as fast as possible so you can make it out of here in four years.  This man was absolutely horrible. If you didn't write down for your answers exactly what he would have written he gave you whatever he felt like. There is no grading system, it is basically what he feels you should get. I went in to talk to him and he said I was illiterate and that some of the words I used were not understandable. I figured professors should be able to comprehend... oops too big... I mean understand words of higher vocabularies. Don't take him if you want to keep a high GPA.

If you can avoid taking this prof...DO IT! If he wasn't so boring it miiight not be so bad. He repeats himself constantly, so it takes him about 20 minutes to just get one point across, and you will NEVER be right! You can write something in your paper that you took from the book, show him the passage it came from, and he'll still mark it wrong because he personally disagrees with the book! I think i can only remember 1 person in my class that actually got an A on a paper. He will take points away on essays for things that he doesnt even ask you to say sometimes. Just don't take him, unless you're having trouble sleeping, this class will knock you right out.

While this man seems to know what he is talking about, he talks about it in a way that made over half of our class fall asleep every day. I was in the back, and that was one form of entertainment...well, the ONLY form in his class. His papers are really tough, but I figured out that if you just write the paper the way you know he feels about this issue (they're both opinion papers) you'll do fine. I got an A- just typin' up all the shit he feels sayin' I felt the same way. Also, his religion comments are just a tad biased. I'm sure you'll notice that, especially if you're a Christian. He really belittles the religion and makes a lot of cracks about it. I took this course paired with Geography with Ehemann... It was hell. Ship assigned it to me first semester freshman year and a year later, I'm still trying to recover!

Dr. Skaff is unfair in the fact that he is not open to other people's opinions, nor will even listen to them in class. He will cut you off, he will criticize you, and he will give you a horrible grade on a paper if you do not share his viewpoint. Expect quizes that are one question (essay), a midterm and a final (that you should study a long time for), and two papers that you will not receive an A on. Also expect to do a lot of reading, and to hear far-out ideas about religion from him. He is boring, gives a LOT of dates you are expected to know, and in general is not very effective.

You have to write papers about books he assigns you to read. They are supposed to be opinion papers, but if your opinion and his weren't the same he didn't grade you very well on it. I do not reccommend taking Skaff unless you have to!

Ok, look. You really can't hate a guy who looks EXACTLY like Ned Flanders. I spent the entire semester waiting for Skaff to say "Okeley Dokely!" Seriously now, the classes are very boring indeed, but effective. It's all done in PowerPoint, and he has the notes online for you to print out, for God's sake. Thus, you know EVERYTHING that's going to be on tests and quizzes, because he has these items specially marked. The papers, however, are another matter. Skaff is (supposedly) a published historian, so he grades like an english professor. Be careful, he's pretty tough grading papers. Definitely not a first choice, but he'd make a good second or third choice as your history prof this semester.

All power point presentations must read text...cuz its different material and it helps u for the test. Stay on his good side and ull do fine.
