Her class was so much fun. You read for class and listen to her lecture/ discuss. You write 5-6 papers, which are rather easy to get a good grade on and at the end of the day you get a good grade, have fun in WIFYS and read a couple interesting books. What's not to like?

I can't even believe there are negative comments for Dr. Van Alkemade! I took her for Creative Nonfiction Writing and Intro to Creative Writing (ENG 190), and I love her to death. She's incredibly lenient in grading and allows you to hand in late work without repercussions. She's very open minded to different interpretations of the texts we read, and always has nice things to say about our writing. If you get the chance to read some of her essays or attend her readings, jump on it. She's an excellent writer and has some very interesting stories to tell.

Kim VanAlkemade... where to begin!??. She's crazy - in a good, sane sort of way. It's such an easy class, the papers are a piece of cake but she makes being in class so much fun. Kim has the best stories from being a professor to being in foreign countries. You'll never forget how to use apostrophes correctly after her illustration using Nazis as bad men... Yeah, she's that creative. Take this class. She makes it worth your while and you'll actually learn something about how to be a better writer which you can use and EVERY class!

Positive: Very amiable prof. She will even send you a Christmas card. Very accommodating to her students. Available. Makes time for you if you ask. Has a desire for her class to be fun and for the students to get along. Flexible about paper topics. Negative: TOO MANY NATIVE AMERICANS. It gets so old. Some assignments are not very well explained. Sometimes seems as though she is a bit sedated.

I thought Dr. Van Alkemade was an amazing teacher. No, she is not very strict with guidelines, and sometimes she does not explain projects well, but it is nice to have choices on the projects she gives. For the most part, we were able to pick any topic we wanted for most of our projects. She does, however, like the topic of Indians. You will learn a lot about Indians in this class. I would definitely recommend Dr. Van Alkemade if you are capable of being independent and responsible in a class.

Dr. van Alkemade is a great professor for you if strict guidelines are not your style. She is very laid back with assignments in that she gives you a good bit of freedom in taking projects and papers in your own direction rather than hers. Classes are typically interactive, and she leads the discussion but lets her students do most of the talking. Overall I think this is a really great class that does not require an insane amount of writing.

She is really funny and easy to talk to when you have problems. She works with you on ANYTHING you need help with in her class. Funny and VERY nice. NEG- she rarely emails people back. A slim chance she will, but other then that she is a great teacher!

Apparently there's actual rules and stuff for creative nonfiction, and we had a textbook, but I didn't actually *learn* much. Dr. VA's way of teaching was kind of just asking if anyone had a question about anything. Does anyone ever? She sort of tears your papers apart, but in the end is usually just like, 'Everyone gets a B', or something similar. One group project, but again, everyone gets the same (usually decent) grade. Not much work, and she's a really cool lady in and out of class--fun to talk to, and she'll probably take the class out for 'nature walks' and stuff. Not stressful at all. Recommended.

I had her for Advanced Placement College Writing as a freshman and last year as a junior for Creative Nonfiction Writing. She's nice, funny, and fair. She's engaging to talk to and doesn't mind shooting the sh*t for awhile, you can tell she enjoys her students and what she's doing. Too bad she's on a sabbatical.

Professor VA is a great prof... she is always happy, and never minds having to wait back and converse with a student having trouble. VERY easy grader, and unless you dont like Native Americans, this class should be easy as pie for you :-D

I loved Dr. van Alkemade. The class wasn't very easy and required a lot of work but she was just the nicest person and it made the work load more bearable. Maybe it just seemed like a lot because I always wait until the last minute. She really cares about her students, gets to know you by name, and gives you more than enough time to get everything done. You have to do a lot of work to get an A in this class but it is definitely possible to do. I really recommend taking van Alkmade.

Professor Van Alkamade is very good. She cares about not only her subject, but also her students as well. She teaches in way that is easy to understand and is always ready to help students in and outside of class. She really tries to help her students. For example I had a family emergency and was unable to attend class for a week. She worked with me and gave me the opportunity to catch up. I would say she is one of the nicest and most helpful professors I have encountered thus far in my college experience. This is why I recomend Professor Van Alkamade to anyone who is interested in a teacher who goes the extra.

Van Alkemade is a very nice person. She always writes good comments on your essays and grades pretty well. And you only write 3 papers in college writing. Her classes are pretty boring b/c she is monotoned for the most part. In class you mostly talk about the readings. Only 3 packets are handed out. The only book you need is like $5, plus a dictionary. She's always available and will answer your questions. I recommend her.

I had Dr. van Alkemade for 2 classes at Ship, and I enjoyed both of them. She is always available for help with work, or even things outside of class. I was hesitant to take this class because I wasn't sure of my nonfictional writing abilities, but Dr. van Alkemade's comments on my papers reassured me. The class grades consisted of short writing exercies from the text, two big projects, and a book review. If you have the opportunity, take her class!

One of the nicest, fairest teachers at Shippensburg. Really passionate about her classes and knows what shes talking about. Unlike many of the professors at Shippensburg, she is actually a good teacher too.

One of the most ridiculous professors I've ever encountered at Ship. It was my fault for taking her for three different classes, but I know her well enough now to know how smug she really is, so just hear me out.
First off, you can forget about your opinions. Even if you're right, you don't matter. Her opinion always takes seniority and she doesn't even acknowledge yours. And if you remain calmly persistent, she'll take it as a personal attack and get offended. She can dish out criticism, but she can't take any of her own medicine. So basically, she's a hypocrite.
She also brought up politics in class all the time. Now, I have nothing against politics or religion, but unless it is a class relating to those two subjects, then keep those discussions outside the classroom.
She also does a lot of in-class promoting of outside events, which is cool, but she'll make you feel like a tool if you don't want to go to an event. And even if you have other plans and there is no possible way you can attend the event, she'll make you feel the same way and shame you in front of the entire class.
I will say that her classes are pretty easy and she usually is available in her office, but you can pretty much say goodbye to your opinions, as they no longer matter.

As of now, the semester's not over but my grade is high. She's helpful whenever u need it. Too much reading about Indians and stupid articles. Papers are a pain b/c she grades tough. Sometimes the students direct the class, never her. How did she receive a Ph. D.?

Dr. Van Alkemade is just boring. It's nothing against her personally - she is fair in her comments and grading, as far as I am concerned and knows her material but it's awful to have to sit and listen to her talk for an hour and fifteen minutes. I also feel like she uses class time to talk about her own opinions and views - like during all the SALE and "protect the sanctity of marriage" stuff that went on. A Prof. should not be bias (at least during class time) and she was. I would not take another of her classes - again though - she is a fair and available teacher who goes out of her way to help you write a better paper.

She does not teach and the class is a bore. Hard grader for the papers you need to do. Only about 4-5 papers, wasnt that rough... you have enough time to do them. I liked most of the class, waited until the night before so it could be alot easier with some work.
