I took his sociology class and had absolutely no problem getting a good grade with barely trying at all. His tests are not like real tests, more like easy quizzes and it's so easy to get a good grade. I skipped a decent amount of classes and still did not have a hard time. (I would suggest following along with the reading in the two small books you need for the class -- you DO NOT need to buy/rent the textbook for this class....I didn't use it once. Buy the two real books though)

Hes a good guy just really, really liberal. Half of the class is bashing the U.S. and sh*tting on being white but he is a pretty good teacher. Read, study, and show up; youll be fine.

He is a very friendly professor. The entire semester all you do is listen to him lecture and watch videos. Most are pretty interesting. The only thing is he rambles a lot and sometimes I get confused as to what he wants us to know. There are 3 exams and 2 papers. He curves on the test so that is nice. Overall really nice guy.

Dr. Volk's class was not the easiest one on the block, but it certainly was not the most difficult. There are 2-3 tests, and he gives study guides for them. There are lots of opportunities for extra credit. You have to take a lot of notes and do the reading, but he provides illuminating examples that help on the tests. There is also a paper that is easy. No group projects, no busywork...just the essentials. I enjoyed that. I err on the side of political conservatism, and Dr. Volk is, of course, a liberal, and not shy about it. That being said, I didn't mind the obvious biases. He's a very nice guy with a quirky sense of humor that I could appreciate. If you're not interested in Sociology, you may find his class boring, but if you're at all interested or just looking for a good gen ed, don't be afraid about taking him.

Though I was sometimes on the fence about him, he knows what he's talking about, and is mostly a good teacher. You have to be really attentive in class for notes, and you're basically screwed if you don't study for tests, but he curves a lot and genuinely seems interested in us as human beings.

I like Dr. Volk. I picked up Strat even though I didnt have intro as a prerequisite. I met with him to see if I could just stay in the class. He said no, but kindly put me in his Intro class. He's funny, knowledgeable, and lets people state their own opinions even if he doesnt agree with them. You definitely have to study for his tests otherwise you're screwed, but he does curve like a mofo. Everyone who says he makes you feel stupid for having a different opinion is wrong...they probably all said something dumb and/or ignorant in class and got proven wrong.

I was almost scared to take this class because other people commented on how hard he was.. you have got to be kidding me!!! This is honestly one of the easiest gen eds I have ever taken at Ship. The ONLY thing you have to do is go to class and take notes and you SHOULD get an A. Well thats all I do and I've done well on every test.. I never read anything that he assigns and it doesn't seem to matter. You just have to read one book (which is somewhat interesting) and write a paper on it.. it is NOT hard. Anyways.. the class is pretty interesting.. although Dr. Volk is not the most interesting guy.. in fact I found him horribly annoying. He's definitely a nerd.. but who cares, he's easy and thats the only thing most people really care about.

Subject: Great Guy, A Tad Boring  (Dec 21 2005, 04:16PM)

14 of 39 students found this review helpful.

Skip is a great guy, although a little boring, but hey, that's probably because sociology isn't quite my thing. He knows what he's talking about and his notes make sense and go in order. He likes his Native Americans and African Americans, so be prepared for a lot of material in that direction. The documentaries are interesting enough to stay awake and will reappear as test questions. The test multiple choice are difficult, but you have a broad choice of essays to make up for it; of which you only write two. He gives a study guide about a week in advance which is all-inclusive for the tests. The two writing assignments are extremely easy and you get 15% of your grade just for showing up to class. He also offers extra credit. Be sure to do the readings for the final (especially the book), or you'll be trapped when it comes to the essays. Overall, just a simple great guy.

Dr. Pineda Volk is an interesting Prof. He does lecture from notes it seems like he's been using for years and years but he's still interesting. You won't have alot of reading for this class but you MUST do what reading he gives you. Most of your information will be given to you in class so no sleeping in class. The extra credit requires alot of writing and he is liberal, but what sociologists aren't? if you don't like what he says just get over it - he's not saying you aren't entitled to your own opinion. He was one of my favorite Profs and he seemed like he really cared about us as people instead of just faces in a class room.

Volk is cool. He is very passionate about what he teaches, and it just shows. He also knows random info that can apply to class, and shows cool videos (like Michael Moore's) and other cool PBS specials. His tests are of medium difficulty--multiple choice and essays. He also gives the option of extra credit, which is awesome. He also asks questions of the class so some of the kids can give their input. He's laid-back--definitely would recommend him.

Dr. Pineda-Volk is a funny teacher, he'll make dry jokes at almost everything! He's a great person though, he'll help you with anything you need, even outside of class material. He offers you extra credit, and his tests are EASY if you go to class and pay attention. You watch videos almost every class, which is an easy way to get participation points! Take him!

Dr. Volk is a smart man and it shows. His class was interesting and fairly easy. If you took good notes and paid attention (which is easy to do b/c he is interesting)then you should be ok. he has review sheets for tests and they help alot. Basically, you should take advantage of how good of a teacher he is.

Skip Volk was a very enjoyable teacher to have, he made class interesting, fun, but challenging. Not an overly diffucult class, but made you think alot about the subject. If you read what he tells you to, and take half decent notes you can get a good grade. I recomend taking him for any class that you can get him.

This guy really pissed me off when I took his class my Freshman year. If you're not a Soc. major, don't take this class just because it's a gen-ed. Choose any other professor besides him. Seriously, he is SOOOOOOOO BORING. All he does is lecture and the part I hate most about his class is the fact he doesn't write notes and expects you to just know what to write as he talks his ass off. Run far away from his class!!!!  13 of 38 students found this review helpful.

Where to begin with good ol' Skip...well I guess one could start by saying that he is a closed minded liberal hippy that will not listen to any opinion that does not go along with his very narrow views. His class consisted of tearing down any form of religion (especially Christianity) by saying that they are responsible for all of mans' short-comings. Along with his clearly atheistic views on society, he continually tells the class that all white people owe minorities for the terrible things that they have done to them over the entirety of Earth's history. And if that's not enough, he promotes the gay lifestyle and if there is anyone who speaks out about it, he calls them a homophobe and tells them how awful of a person they are for not thinking like he does. His lectures consist of various scribbles on the blackboard and a pointless rambling of his slanted views. And, if there was a student brave enough to speak out against him, he would turn around this students views and make them the laughing stock of the whole class. Everyday in class I hated it more and more. I suggest you stay away from this failure of a professor unless you are firm in your beliefs or you share the same twisted ideology as he does.

I guess I'm a glutton for punishment. I took Skip for Intro my freshman year, and I thought he was hard as hell. And yet I took him again...not too smart of me, but he's the only prof that teaches this class. I thought if I worked my butt off, I could maybe get a better grade in this class. No such luck. He never tests on what he lectures, and he was so hard to follow with what he wanted us to know. His syllabus was not organized at all, and he would cut things out without telling us ahead of time. His lectures were horribly boring and his tests are the hardest I've ever taken, and I'm a really good student usually. I've learned my lesson times two...good luck with getting through Strat without wanting to pull your hair out!

He's a nice guy, and he obviously knows alot about what he's teaching, but he is just INCREDIBLY boring. The man has no presence at all. It's like he's afraid to complete a sentence, too. He starts a thought and just trails off and is so quiet when he is finishing it, you have no idea what he's saying. His movies are pretty good, but then when we try to discuss them, he corrects you so much, you dont' even want to give your opinon. Overall, this could have been a really good class, but he doesn't encourage participation enough.

I wasn't originally supposed to have Skip as my Soc. Professor but when Dr. Judy left, Skip became our new prof. How unlucky. He does seem like he knows a lot about what he is teaching but often he gets off on rants and calls them 'Skip's Methods.' If you ask a question or give an opinion, he makes you feel like a total ass. For some strange reason he has an obsession with African Americans and Native Americans and you watch countless boring videos that make you realize you'd rather chew your arm off. Occasionally he will make a funny comment, usually involving sex, orgies, or smoking pot, really thats the only thing that keeps it interesting. He will write random notes on the board that don't really make sense. He also needs to get rid of the beatnik look and come into the 21st century. Run far away from this horrible horrible man.

He should be punished for the horrible and pointless material he teaches.  When I first walked into the class, he had a bubbly personality so I figured an okay class. Wrong!!! He only lectures so you can't be absent. He never told us what we had to know for an exam until the class before. Extra Credit wasn't offered as much. If you studied, the 30 MC and 2 essays were easy. Essays had to be one page at least.  I'm not sure how I feel about him. As a professor I didn't feel that he was very good. He came off pretty boring and did not make class exciting at the same time. On the other hand, his class was a breeze! I didn't have any trouble with the tests and we only had to write like two short papers(like 2 or 3 pages double spaced). He gives a lot of chances for extra credit also. If you want an easy grade, this is a good prof, but he's gonna bore you to death most likely!
