She is a good professor, and she is very helpful. I hear she is always available for office hours, though I never went to ask for help. I would probably choose her over other comp sci professors because she can help you with anything, the only downside is that her class is hard. Good luck if you are like me and never took or had any interest in java before.

Took traditional life cycles. The class wasn't bad.. got to work on an interesting project. She can be intimidating at first, but get to know her outside of class, go to her office hours, and you'll find someone willing to go above and beyond to help her students. Highly recommend taking classes with her.

Before I took Dr. Wellington's class I had no knowledge of coding or java at all, none; the way she explained everything step by step made it so much easier to understand. We had to do a weekly Lab which got harder with every week but every time it always gave me a great sense of accomplishment. Her tests are not too difficult, if you can do the labs and you think you understand the book then you will probably do fine on the tests. She is available a lot of the time on AIM which was my primary source of communication with her and she was always very very patient with me and she is always great at explaining things. She is also very funny and goofy, she makes class fun and more laid back which just makes her class that much better. I would take Wellington again for CS2 in a heartbeat but she doesn't teach it which I was very upset to hear. Dr. Wellington is one of my favorite teachers ever; if you have the chance, take her!

Given that I had never taken a programming class before college, CS1 came to me as a challenge. However, because Wellington is available pretty much 24/7 (she is almost always online - even up to 3am!) or in her office, or responding to emails, I was able to grasp object oriented programming well enough to get that A and move onto CS2. If you ask questions and do the weekly labs you will be fine. You don't start having to write your own code until lab 6 (might be different for newer versions), and even then it's piece by piece, so don't sweat it! Her classes are off of power points she creates (and posts on her site when she remembers) that go along with the book that she wrote. There is a quiz every Monday on the previous lab, and one question on what that week's lab is about. Her exams are based off the quizzes and the questions at the end of the lab. So study them! The final is off of the exams as well, which makes it easier. Her class environment is laid back (for Halloween she gave candy out for the first people to find the answers to the paper practices - or even the people who just made an attempt) She is very easy to talk to (online or in person), and never makes you feel dumb. Take her if you can!! If you've had programming before, still do the labs! Ship teaches Java through JUnit testing, which is different than most colleges. Don't feel bad if you don't get something, just ask and she'll make it understandable. =)

Always available for help, class consisted of labs and tests.... people who did poorly in class did not show up or work on labs outside of class. She gives very personal attention and is helpful.

Her class was hard for me, but if u ask her for help she'll surprise you with lots of it, so never be afraid to ask her for help. She's also ALWAYS available outside of class... even though I didn't do well I'd definitely take her class again.

Dr. Wellington pushes you to give your best effort on your project and can be demanding because of this. However, when its all said and done, you'll really feel like you've accomplished something.

I've had Dr. Wellington for three classes and my acaademic advisor, and I've learned a lot in her classes. She does a great job in balancing the academic with practical to give you a good overall experience. As Gonzo said, if you're willing to do your part, you can get a lot out of her classes. She's very knowledgeable and if she doesn't know the answer she'll research it and get back to you. I wish that more professors would show as much care and interest as Dr. Wellington. To me, the best Comp. Scie. prof at Shippensburg. I would strongly advise you to take her if you're seroius about Comp. Scie.

I've heard a lot of students complain that Wellington is too easy. Her classes aren't hard. But she is very good at putting only as much effort in as the student. Anotherwords, Wellington will help you go as far as you want to go. If the class is too easy, it's cause you don't care enough to take it into more depth. I've had her for Overview, SE I&II, Testing and Debugging and Inovation & Invention(a non comp sci class) and would take them all again with her.

Dr. Wellington is easily the least competent and worst professor I've had in my two years at Ship so far. She has no desire to make sure you actually learn anything and has no concept of how to teach. Yes, she may have been available quite a lot, but she was completely unwilling to answer any questions, only stating: "You should know that." I strongly advise against taking any of her classes as she never actually teaches you a thing; everything comes straight out of her own textbook.

Dr.Wellington is not that bad, but not my favorite.
PROS Shes really good at teaching, she'll always explain things over if you just ask (actually she kind of gets mad when you don't ask questions a lot). She will always be available to help, and is really nice in that regard. She knows what she is doing pretty much and you should learn a lot.
CONS She can be nasty and mean at times, and then other times really nice. She picks favorites a lot too. You shouldn't see that side of her unless you are in her lab section (lectures are too big to see all that). Adventures for Comp Sci majors is a HUGE pain in the ASS. I spent more time doing adventures then studying, it was insane. It was helpful at first to get me oriented with the campus...but then it just got redundant and stupid. She can also be a fairly brutal grader and not really explain why its wrong (unless you run down to her office hours...it just be convenient if she wrote why). Her exams are pretty much all the content and lab questions from the book, multiple choice from the vocab in the book, and a few sections with reading or writing code.
Overall, I'd take her if it fit my schedule well...but I wouldn't go out of my way to. She's alright.

She had her classes doing quests... each student will be given about 60 quests. Students gain experiences after completing these quests and level up. You must level up before the tests otherwise you will not be able to take one. What are the quests? You will be asked by the great wizard of merlin to travel the realm of shippensburg to determine the mission statement of the forbidden castle of old main, battle the unreleased and derogatory looks from the annoyed professors, and dodge the relentless cyclists on the path to the ancient library of education. Hint, first you might wanna find out who tim the enchanter is, which may assist you in the future quests.

When I first started the class, I was expecting to do a lot of work. The first day, she strongly emphasized how important it was to read the book and how we were expected to keep up with the reading on our own as the class progressed. I spent the first week reading something like the first four chapters, but then realized that it really wasn't necessary. No tests (not even a final) were given in this course, which she later described as being "hands on." In addition, she barely even lectured at all, only giving us brief instructions on what we had to do for each step of the development cycle. We were only expected to show up to class and meet once a week with our groups outside of class, all the while keeping meeting notes and other records so we could show her at the end that we followed the software development process (a completed application wasn't required). It was an easy course, but in the end, I didn't feel like I learned much. Maybe her other classes are different, but if you want to learn something, don't take her for Trad. Life Cycles.

Well, Dr. Wellington is a little...strange. She's very nice and helpful, but in class, she can become pretty nasty in her comments to students. Honestly, she said some things to us this semester that a male professor would have gotten a black eye out of. I felt pretty lost during the entire project, although I can't chalk that up to the professor so much as the unrealistic time and communication limitations that the pedagogical process puts on this curriculum. Kind of hard to simulate a forty-hour work week in a normal company when you're meeting 2 days a week for 2 hours. She's a java expert, and I often got the feeling that her attitude was "if you don't do it MY way, it's wrong"(Not through Thomas-esque lack of understanding your code, but more like not being able to see it from an entry-level programmer's standpoint), which led to a lot of code being junked and a lack of any sense of purpose or accomplishment. But she gave me a B, which I didn't feel I deserved, so she was true to her word and graded us on following the process and not the results. I think she'd be better off teaching grad students, and not us dumb undergrads.

Well, she's definitely a cool prof... she's nice, she's entertaining, she teaches the subject well, she's always available and willing to help. But she has her problems to. For example, notice that I didn't fill in a grade for this comment... that's because I have no clue what it is. The semester's nearly over, and we have not gotten back a single grade on the 7 labs we've done. For someone who promotes good work ethics, she sure is lazy. So basically, you have no idea whether or not you're doing anything right on your labs, and you could be doing the same things wrong over and over. The work is difficult, and she seems to expect you to know how to do everything based on minimal instruction. She'll help you out on it, but she makes you work ridiculously hard just to get an answer out of her. All in all, she's not a bad prof, but she's certainly not the best.

I had Wellington about 2-3 years ago during my freshman year. She knew a lot about the basics of computers, programming, networks, and such. Most of the kids in the class though didn't learn a thing, although many were not Comp-Sci majors or minors. I rarely showed up to class, got an easy B, mainly because I knew everything that was taught in the class. My guess is that most of it was "dumbed-down" to help those that were not familiar with the topics covered. Easy professor if you're lazy, probably won't learn much if you don't already have some computer knowledge.
