Dr. Woltemade is an awesome professor! No questions asked! If you are willing to put through the effort and learn the material he is teaching you and if you ask questions in/outside of class you will do fine! You can probably pull off a B by just reading and taking note, but if you actually come around to actually LEARN the material, you'll do great. Plus the load of homework you get is not that much and not difficult!

Dr. Woltemade is a tough teacher and does not give points away. However if you take notes and study you should be able to pass. If you pay attention you will learn something from a skilled and notable professor. The guy designed a wetland in the back of the campus! If you are not interested in the subject matter than might want to steer away but hes not too bad.

When you take one of his classes he requires you to work and to think. If you are looking for a class to pad your GPA, move on. However, if you are looking for a class that you will teach you something and provide you with knowledge you can apply, take one of his classes

Dr. Woltemade's lectures are very clear. He is easy to follow and makes good notes and outlines on the board. His study guides don't really help you very much and he doesn't encourage any kind of class participation. He is involved in his subject in real life so that makes him more interesting and he is always very available to ask questions. As long as you don't miss classes and study your notes you will do okay in this class.

This guy is the best. He is always around when you need him in and out of the classroom. If you slack off in class you will pay for it in his tests. But if you do your work and take notes your good. You don't even have to read the book. Just take notes.

I've had Dr. Woltemade for 3, soon to be 4 courses, during my career at SU. The man loves teach and wants to engage his students. I've seen him in action during his Gen. Ed courses and it's the same style as his majors/graduate courses. He has a special knack at making you feel like a moron sometimes during office hours but it's by accident, he's a really nice guy. Go to his office with questions prepared and you'll avoid the "wasting my time stare" and he'll do anything he can to help.

I liked Dr. Woltemade a lot. He seemed real down to earth. I read all he had was negative and neutral comments and I felt bad because I liked him. I didnt think his tests were hard, they are all multiple choice!!! with maybe one listing problem at the end. He was also available for me when I went to ask him a question. He also offers extra credit. Sooo think what you will, but I liked him!

This prof is by far the worst I have ever had. I went to all of his classes, took notes and read the book. And with all of that I still managed to get a failing grade on pretty much all of his tests. Even with the few lab assignments you are given, they really don't help pull up the 4 tests that your entire grade is based upon. After talking to 2 others that graduated from Ship and both had him, they both failed also, I know that it was not just my lack of knowledge of rocks that got me where I am. He is full of knowledge, it's just too bad that knowledge isn't useful on his tests. It seems like he wants his students to fail. There was only a few kids that passed his tests, and with that number of failing students you would think he would curve the grades/class or at least look into his own teaching style to see what the problem was. But he didn't. Then he tells you if you need more help to go to the Learning Center, well I did. I was there for literally 5 min. when I finally got a time to see the only person with Geology knowledge. Even she couldn't help me. Needless to say, I really am upset that this class dropped my GPA, and would recommend NOT taking this prof.

Subject: DO NOT TAKE HIM  (Dec 02 2007, 01:23PM)

I took this class because it fit into my schedule. I am a good student with two majors and a GPA above a 3.0. Yet this class was one of the most difficult I have taken while at SU. His tests are very irrelevant to his notes, so they are almost impossible to study for. Like others have said before, his labs are graded pretty harshly. It doesn't help if you have a lab partner because both of you don't know what's going on. He also requests that students go to the learning center to receive more information. But the learning center shouldn't have to supplement what lacks in the classroom. When I did go to the learning center, there was a waiting list to have the one person that does teach geology. This did not help my lab that needed to be done by the next week. In all, do everything you can to avoid him. I'm regretting that I didn't take this course pass/fail. []

Ok, most people would think Earth Science is easy. Well, you are totally wrong when it comes to this man. This is by far the hardest gen-ed I have ever taken!!!! He gives notes every day in class, but they are all over the place and dont seem to help when you study. He has only tests to study, but they have nothing to do with the real tests. His tests are extremely hard and even if you study it seems hard. I would never take him again and I wish anyone who takes him the best of luck bc you will need it. There were 6 or more people that failed his class!!! He gets his jolly off to rocks!!!!!

He is a hard professor. The tests are so much more in depth then what you learn in class. I thought I understood everything I learned in class but when I got to the test, I felt like I knew nothing. You have a couple labs which can pull your grade up but he grades them hard. He is a nice guy and doesn't seem to be hard at first but later on you will see that he expects you to know too much detailed info for a gen ed class. I wouldnt take him again...

Dr. woltemade is by far the worst prof I have ever had. His test questions are tricky and he is no help. I saw someone said he offered extra credit... he doesnt. The labs are graded harshly, and he doesnt even tell you how to do them. He wants you to know before you even walk through the door... and having a partner for the labs isnt a privilege, its a necessity. The man is impossible and so is the class. I went to every class, took notes every day, and studied more than I have ever studied in my life... and got a D in the class. The man is the devil. Stay as far away as possible!!!!!

I took Dr. Woltemade after reading the comments and seeing that everyone else seemed to think he was an okay guy. Well, I was wrong. After a semester filled with trick questions and an unfair grading system, I did very poorly in this class. Dr. Woltemade knows his stuff, that's for sure...but as far as being able to TEACH that information effectively, well you can forget that!! He treats his intro class as if it were a 300 or 400 level course, so you'd better be prepared to know all of your rock types as soon as you walk through the door! Also, he gives these partner labs that, ok great you have a partner, but neither one of you knows how to actually complete it. Overall, I had a very negative experience with Dr. Woltemade and I would recommend to anyone to STEER CLEAR of him at all costs...I don't think I would ever take him again for anything, even if it meant graduating on time!!! Stay Away!!!!

Professor Woltemade was an okay teacher. That is it. I have never been good in science and only once had a really good science teacher. I did not expect him to break that mold. What I did expect however, was for him to make things interesting and a little easier for those of us who do not understand science easily. He did none of those. I know he tried, but trying and doing are two different things. Then again, I am an art major and sort of didn't work too hard in this class and did not care about it. I assumed it was going to be an easy B+/A- class but that is not the case. Also, just a tip for all of you, he really does not give extra credit. EVER. We had a lab where 1/4 of the class showed up because it was outside and pouring rain at the time. All we got for having our lab paper's ruined and showing up in sh*tty weather was a "Kudos". An extra 5 points for commitment would have been much appreciated when only 6 out of over 25 students showed up. Tl;DR: He is not a bad or good teacher, and I did not care about the class since it is one of my two weakest academic categories. I feel like I'm getting a C+ or a B- in the class and he DOES NOT give extra credit. Ever.

Not too bad of a prof. Classes can be kind of boring if he drones on. Sometimes he'll spark it up with something amusing (which is rare). He knows his geology since he has been everywhere and will show you examples of rocks he's collected. Just pay attention, take notes on everything he says, and do the homework. Tests are hard... if you don't make an effort to study at all you will fail it. You do a few class activities like going out to burd run and filling out a packet on rocks and such.

This guy is really nice. He's really smart. But his class is super hard. I studied for all of his tests, went to every class, took excellent notes, and I still managed to get a C+. One thing I really did like about him was that he traveled a lot, and he takes really cool pictures of places he's been to and he can do all kinds of case studies about the things he's done and seen. But...it all has nothing to do with his tests, the book readings are POINTLESS because the test has nothing to do with them, believe me...I read every single one, and it still didn't help. It's hard to hate this guy cuz he's so down to earth, but come on...He needs to curve his tests or something.

I was placed in this class my first semester here (as a gen ed. Someone told me that Geology was rocks for jocks, However, Dr. Woltermade knows his stuff and he wants you to know it to. His test are quiet difficult but at least you get a partner for the labs. If you like Geology and care about it, take Dr. Woltermade. If not steer clear.
