PLS 300 with Dr. Berry is not for everyone. He'll lecture, but not really teach much of anything, so in essence you are teaching yourself the material from reading over his notes as well as the textbooks. I will reiterate he's not for everyone, if you want a class you can half-ass and pull a C, this isn't for you. This class has 1 weekly D2L Quiz, a Midterm, a Research Paper and a final. If you are in PLS 300 then obviously you are a Poli Sci major, and if not then you're probably studying Public Administration, either way the material covered in the course should not be too challenging for you, and should not be so difficult that you would need all that much assistance to begin with. All in all Dr. Berry wants you to succeed, but this isn't High School, your an adult, he's not going to go out of his way to help you. Go to his office hours for help before you take the quizzes, meet with him regularly for assistance with your research paper. In the grand scheme of things these are small sacrifices to make for a good grade are they not? If you do these things then I have no doubt you will succeed with Dr. Berry's course.

I hear a lot of people complain about Dr. Berry. However, if you pay attention to the weekly online exams (which can be long and tedious), you will do fine. The questions are literally the exact same ones you will see on the midterm and final exam which make up about 50% of your grade. It seems like it takes a lot of effort, but go to his office hours each week and see what answers you got wrong on each exam and getting an A is super easy. Also, during your online exams, ctrl + f is your best friend because his notes are all in Word.

Let me first start by saying I am not a huge fan of Dr. Berry. His classes can be slow moving and I disagree with him on almost all major issues. However,I WISH THERE WERE MANY MORE PROFS LIKE HIM. When I read the comments below saying he is unfair and his classes are SO hard these comments are simply not true. Dr. Berry is not going to go out of his way to make exceptions for you or hold your hand to try and get you and A. YOU ARE IN COLLEGE. The fact of the matter is if you cannot get a decent grade in Dr. Berry’s class you probably should not be in college. Dr. Berry knows this and he (unlike many other professors) is willing to fail students who should not be in college in the first place. In my opinion this makes him MORE fair as the students who deserve to get good grades and earn a college degree accomplishments are not watered down by grade inflation. At the end of the day if you simply study his notes there is no reason you cannot get a good grade. He wants to succeed but he is not going to just pass you because you showed up to class once a week.

Dr. Berry is a VERY intelligent professor. When it comes to anything related to political science he is the man to see. His class can be boring at times but every so often he shows his sense of humor. His tests are LONG averaging about 100-150 scantron questions in only 50 min. Even if you have a 75 min class you only get 50 min. But they really only take about 20-25 min, I was surprised to see how fast I finished. He has weekly online quizzes that must be completed that can be extremely detailed but if you go to class with notes already printed from blackboard AND take extra notes from his lecture you will be fine. The quizzes help EXTREMELY on the tests and its actually nice forcing you to look at your notes every week. YOU MUST GO TO CLASS not only for the attendance but also for the little details that he mentions that WILL be on the online quizzes and tests. He does offer up to 60 points in extra credit and overall that's 6% points in the semester. I highly recommend Dr. Berry if you actually want to learn something about the government. Because you will learn about EVERYTHING

Okay, so walking into the class, I completely expected a miserable experience and to have earned nothing higher than a B- at the end of the semester. Much to my surprise, I found that Dr. Berry's class, while it drags a bit at points, was not only not difficult, it was interesting and relatively easy. You have weekly online quizzes, from which every single one of the exam questions are pulled. There are three exams, and in addition there is a research paper, written on whichever topic you choose. He offers 60 points in extra credit - what professor do you know that does that. And as far as the subject matter, I'm really astounded at the sheer volume of facts, figures, and technical information that I can now spout on request regarding the minutiae of American Government. If the measure of a professor is the amount of material that you learn while in class, Dr. Berry gets an A. Although Dr. Berry is a must-take professor for anyone wanting to complete their Poli Sci major or minor requirements, I really wish I could take him for another class. He's definitely much, much better than his reputation suggests.

Dr. Berry is an alright professor, all he does is lecture and asks questions every now and then, he loves to hear himself talk and sound really smart and important, he is very full of himself. Overall his class consists of a lot of reading and quizzes. You have two tests and then a final, plus a huge waste of time paper. Just show up to class, pay attention, do well on the quizzes and bullsh*t the paper, and you should be good. There is waaaayyyyy too much reading involved too so beware!

What can I say about Dr. Curtis Berry? On occasion he gets off track due to a question a student asks in class. One day we were talking about legislature and ended up talking about Michael Jackson some how. Huh? The only redeeming component in his teaching was that he posted the notes on blackboard. I was able to get a C without really trying.

I like Dr. Berry a lot because he knows his stuff really well and is full of information about government. One thing I didn't like about him was that all he does is lectures and doesn't really involve the class, so if you don't like to participate then take him. His tests are multiple choice, but if you don't know much about government or politics and don't like to read, I would advise you to take someone else because the tests are pretty hard and long. But if you like this type of stuff then take him, it is worth it.

I don't know how anyone could do poorly in Dr. Berry's class unless it's purely their fault. He puts outlines on BlackBoard (though he doesn't use it for anything else) and doesn't require any papers be written. He has three tests all semester and drops the first (and hardest) test if it's lower than the last two. He weights exams to make the class average 75% and they are all 100-question, multiple choice exams. He's funny in class, always open for questions, seems to really love his topic, and is highly inventive and illustrative in his examples. Great professor, great class, easy A+++

Dr. Berry is not the easiest prof on campus. However he makes every effort to help you achieve in the course if you are willing to put in some effort as well. The best thing to do is to ask questions. It makes it easier to understand. Don't blow off printing the notes cuz it helps during lecture and also with the exams. He is a very nice guy and should be considered when scheduling.

i heard that dr. berry's class was tough. and it was. there are 100 total points and a paper that is 12-15 pages long and it counts for 20 points. he provides notes/outlines for everything he discusses, though they're usually 20-30 pages long. that being said, he may be tough but he's fair. i never printed out his notes. instead, i took notes on what he said in class. to study for the test, i went over the notes, did the reading and looked over his guidlines. when it comes to his tests, read the questions carefully. take advantage of the extra credit he offers. his final is cumulative of over 160 questions. but the first 2/3 of the final questions are taken directly from the first two exams. dr. berry's class was one of the hardest i've taken but as long as you stay on top of the work, you'll do fine.

I was dreading this class because of the comments the people made on here... But Berry turned out to be one of my favorite profs. He is seriously the most intelligent man I have ever met... Its nuts, he knows everything about gov't. I didn't find his class boring, but I am biased cause Im a gov major. When he starts to make jokes its hilarious. It's not an incredibly easy class, but you can get 10% extra credit... his tests arent hard.. the paper is a pain in the ass. But its college, it is supposed to be challenging, so wipe it up and deal with it right?

This professor is not effective with teaching at all. He reads the notes in class that you are able to print offline. He does not explain anything. When asking him a question, he acts as if its a pain for him to answer or he treats you like you are dumb. He is not very nice at all. I DO NOT recommend him at all.

I took Berry's class my first semester of my freshman year. I read the book, studied and did horrible! He told me I should change my major because I wasn't doing well. I have taken other poli sci courses and have done great in them! So I'm so HAPPY I didn't listen to him. He is arrogant and acts like he knows everything when he clearly doesn't. He expects you to memorize the text, his notes in class and what he puts online. It's impossible to do well on his weekly quizzes... 50 mins for 50 ? and he tricks you with his ?s (he is one of those profs!). I dread taking him again. I am telling you the class is awful. Tests and quizzes are insanely hard...he acts like it's a 300 level class(HELLO! IT'S NOT!) Just save yourself the hard work and pain..take an easier prof!

For his good points...he posts his typed notes onto blackboard which help when studying, he offers a lot of help during his office hours. Bad points...he gives a workload without realizing that we have other classes. His tests are ridiculously long (around 150 questions the final is around 250) even his quizzes are around 50 questions. It is nearly impossible to pay attention in his class, which means you will learn very little from dr berry and must teach yourself everything from the mountains of reading he assigns. He stands at the front of class reading the notes that he has put on blackboard in a very monotone voice. He really isnt a bad guy, but it seems like he has done everything he could to make his classes as boring as possible.

Dr. Berry is very intelligent but is a horrible professor. You have weekly quizzes on blackboard that consist of 40-50 multiple choice questions. All of his notes are online but there are anywhere from 5-25 pages long per chapter. His tests are 125 multiple choice questions. Only good thing about his class he gives up 60 points extra credit but the class is out of a 1000, doesnt help too much. Recommend taking a different professor

Dr. Berry is the only professor in the Political Science dept. I have had in my four years at Shippensburg University that I neither respected or learned from. He is by far the laziest man ever. He sets up his class to make students do as much work as possible with as little effort as possible on his end. His online quizzes are every single week, and often consist of things he never talked about in class or in the online notes. You cannot review the quiz questions after because he doesn't change them from semester to semester and he uses those exact questions on the test. So unless you are able to ctrl print screen every question during your timed quiz the chances of remembering them are slim. You have a 10-15 page paper due that will take you an ungodly amount of time and he will probably glance over for about 30 min. He cares more about the 1 inch margins on the paper than the actual content. Yea good teaching Berry. His class is so monotonous he sits in a chair at the front of the class and lectures directly from notes found online. If he did not make attendance mandatory there is no way anyone would go. Its so unnecessary and so ineffective. His tests often have multiple questions repeated, and they are usually about 150 mult. choice questions. Again lots of work on your end and very little on his as he send them through a scan-tron. He wasn't even there to administer the test once, including the final. Ineffective, lazy, and a said mark on an otherwise awesome political science department.

His lectures are boring, he spends half the class talking about the upcoming presidential election rather than actually teaching. His tests are all 125 questions and very very hard!! His lectures never match whats in the book and he gives an online quiz every week which are open book, but the answers are impossible to find because of the way he words things. I've never had this much trouble with a class before. Attendance is mandatory... if you miss more than three classes its a letter grade reduction. No matter what.

This man makes Ben Stein look like a skilled orator. Dr. Berry knows his material which is all well and good, but he delivers it in such a way that systematically puts the entire class to sleep within the first fifteen minutes. His tests are difficult, but if you learn the material and study you'll be okay. If you can avoid him, do it, there are professors who teach the same classes, but with them you actually learn.

In the entirety of my college education, Dr. Berry is the worst professor that I have ever had. His class is entirely based on rote memorization; not actual learning, and he requires an endless of amount of busy work with requirements that are reminiscent of 5th grade (.7 inch margins, etc.). The fact that this institution would grant such a miserable professor tenure has made me reconsider my decision to attend Shippensburg.

Dr. Berry is a Poli Sci tradition, everyone in the major will be required to take him at least once. This is sad because he is one of the worst professors in the department. His classes are 50 to 75 minutes of the most boring lectures you will experience. There is no student participation in class, so don't even hope. The readings are worthless (except the novels because he asks you unimportant questions directly from the book). He gives you all of the notes in pre-printed form so you don't even need to listen to his lecture (which helps you understand why his attendance policy is so lax). His tests are all multiple choice and the course is a detailed reiteration of American Government 100. This is a class which should be replaced by a more interesting and important course.

Dr. Berry is a hard professor but he grades fair. There were online quizzes every week that are about 30 to 50 multiple choice questions that are relatively hard. If you do the reading you should do fine. The test questions are taken from the online quizzes. The only problem is Dr. Berry doesn't let you see your quiz results after you're done and the quizzes are timed. There are quite a few chances for extra credit so don't be too worried about messing up a quiz. All in all Berry is an ok guy but he is a hard professor, but he knows his stuff.

Dr. Berry is a very nice and outgoing teacher. He is very easy to talk to and is always offering office hours for you to go and speak with him if you need to. However, his class is quite hard. He gives you study guides through email and then reads them aloud in class for you to take additional notes on. This would be nice, but the study guides are usually 30-60 pages long, if not longer. And he's deceiving on the exams. The questions are worded in a way that makes most of the answers fit when there's only one specific answer he's looking for. The exams are 60-70 multiple choice questions and the final is comprehensive and is about 175 questions long. There is way too much information that goes along with each of these and it's next to impossible to study the LONG study guides that he gives.

he's a decent guy, but trying to take notes in his class is the biggest challenge next to the tests...good luck if you do get him...

He covers so much material in one day, it's crazy. He gives you a guide to follow so you don't lose track. He's painfully boring at times, but, really, State and Local Government in itself is boring. Take advantage of his extra credit! When I took him, extra credit could boost your grade by 10%! Good thing too beause his long multiple choice tests are killer. More than likely you won't have any other choice than to take Dr. Berry if you want to take State and Local Government. Grin and bear it
