Delis is an awesome professor! He cracks jokes and always relates what you're learning to real life events. There was not much homework but you have to study a lot and often. He makes you work hard for your grade. However, keep in mind that his accent may make it tough for some people to understand what he is saying. It's not extremely thick but if you aren't paying close attention you may miss something important. If you ask him to repeat something he will, because he understands his accent can be hard to understand. If you have to take a Biology class I highly recommend him!

Tough grader picks apart everything, studying is required to get an A or B. Lab practicals are fairly difficult he goes into detail about what you do in lab and tests you on the details not the general topics. My advice is if you don't plan on staying around in FSC and are looking to get a gen ed out of the way don't take him. On the reverse if you are a bio/chem/physics/etc major take him. Hes one of the nicest guys you will meet and will be a great friend and asset. He genuinely cares about you and your progress throughout college. He openly invites people to help him in research with him. He has fairly good office hours, which you can find by following the sound of blaring Spanish castanets.

The class was hard as hell but worth it every minute. I learned more than in most other classes I have taken. He uses all the stuff thst I learned before and uses it for this class... genetics, ecology, evolution, and physiology. He really likes to teach and loves the subject that he teaches. Yes his accent is hard, yes his exams are long and picky, but it is a 400 level class. It is expected. And there is no time that he says he is not going to help you with something... he is always willing to answer questions even when I caught him eating lunch in his office. Great sense of humor too. Take his class if you want to learn, have fun, and care about the conservation of wildlife.

He is really demanding but he makes you learn and prepares you for the next level. I want to go to vet school and this class makes me feel what it is going to be like when I am there. Dr. Delis made me work like mad but it is worth it. If you do not like to work you're ass off, do not choose his class though.

I really liked this prof. His class was challenging and the tests arenít that easy; you have to study for them. But Pablo keeps class really interesting, he really knows his stuff. Heís loud, exciting, and keeps class fun. He is very liberal and lets you know it. He hates stupid questions and hates it if you donít take his class seriously. As long try in his class and study youíll do fine.

He is really knowledgeable, funny, and fair. But it is true, as others already mentioned, he is very hard. He expects you to learn lots of information very quickly. And he expects you to know stuff from other classes, like Bio 1, ecology, evolution, anatomy and physiology, but he was always willing to help you and refresh your memory. The exams are long but he mixes them up with multiple choice and essays, and he is willing to give you bonus points in every one. The practical exams are lots of memorization of scientific names but he helps you with web sites, a really colorful book and handouts to make it easier. If you are responsible and study, you can get a good grade. He teaches advanced classes, he warns you and he means it. The field trips were a blast, and he gives points for participation and attitude, and bonus if you catch animals! These points help alot. His jokes and his accent made the class even more entertaining. He can roll those R's! If you like the subject, you will love his class. Great professor!

Dr. Delis is one of my favorite teachers. At first the class sounded hard and it is to a degree, but he makes jokes all the time in class and laughs a lot. There are weekly writing assignments, but if you do them before they're due, it saves a lot of time at the end when he checks them. His tests can be pretty hard, but the more you study, the better grade. When I had a question I would see him right after class with other students and he would take the time to answer each of our questions. When writing notes, write fast because he will move to the next set of notes or see him after class. One of the best professors I've had

He is really demanding, but it is worth it. I had to memorize a whole lot of scientific names, and know details in the book, identifying all sorts of pictures, animals in jars, skeletons, and even songs of birds and frogs. Also, the field trip to Wallops was fantastic. I learned more stuff in this class than in any other I took at Ship. Take Dr Delis class.

Dr. Pablo is an awesome prof. He helps you pay attention to his class with his Spanish jokes. Watch out for the volume! You'll be sure to need a hearing aid after his class if you take a seat anywhere near the front! Overall he is a nice guy. It's entertaining to watch him try to dance to cell phone rings when a cell phone goes off in class. He does some sort of funny Spaniard dance.

Dr. Delis is a good professor who really gets you to think about the environment -- a very effective professor! The trick to his tests are to actually use the website he gives you for the multiple choice -- he pulls about half of the questions from the multiple choice tests online!!! If I would have figured that out for the first 2 tests I would have gotten an A easily. Besides the 4 tests, you also have to give a presentation, but thats cake. He also gives plenty of bonus points -- Take this man!

Dr. Delis is passionate about teaching Biology, and this really helps keep his classes interesting. If you don't want to lose your hearing, though, sit toward the back. His lectures are given with Powerpoint and the notes are right out of the text book. His multiple choice exams are challenging but do-able. If it wasn't for bombing one of the Lab practicals (NOT EASY), I would have gotten an A in the class.

Dr. Delis is an incredible guy. He is originally from Spain and has a very thick "Massachusetts" accent. It is hilarious to hear him say his "r's" because he rolls them, especially when he gets all excited about rrrrreproduction. His class is seriously tough though. I worked my ass off and pulled a "B" while most people were happy with "D's" and "C's". I would say it is next to impossible to get an "A". I studied hardcore and had an 89%. He grades traditional and does not give +/- grades which was a downer in my case. I highly recommend him even though he is a tough grader. You will learn a ton under his instruction. Note: If you are not a Bio major, in a major that does not require Principles, or do not like Biology, do not take Principles. Take a regular Science Gen-Ed that is three credits. You have to truly love or make yourself love Biology to take Principles.

Dr. Delis is the very best professor I have ever had. He is organized and clear, he repeats and explains things, he is loud and has a good sense of humor. He is funny even with his accent. He really shows us that he loves biology and loves to teach. He takes as much time as needed to answer question in and out of the classroom. You catch him in the hallway and ask him a question or ask him a favor and he is always helpful, caring, and friendly. I have leaned more biology in two months than in the two other years of biology and natural sciences in HS. It is true, lazy butts will not do well in Dr. Delisí class. That is for sure! He tries to make class exciting by adding jokes here and there and he almost always will bring up soccer in some sort of way in his lectures (he loves soccer). Although he is a good teacher his class is very hard! If you are not good with science I do not recommend taking him because you will fall behind in class. If anything take BIO 161 before 162 -that's were I messed up because he expects you know a lot already. Good luck!

Delis seems like a nice guy, and he's very passionate about the environment and his animals he does work with. However, he seems to forget that this is a level 100 class and most of us are taking it as a gen ed. Mid-semester I was failing, so I spoke to him after class briefly and he said to email him, so I did. I waited more than a week and he never responded. I also went to his office hours and waited for a half hour but he never showed. I double checked the time on the syllabus and he also had his schedule posted on his office door. I ended up withdrawing from the class. Insanely hard, don't take him unless you're actually a science major.

Subject: WARNING: Way too much work!  (Feb 14 2013, 09:51AM)

Grading for Environmental Biology: 4 exams, 1 cumulative final, 15 (that's right, fifteen) environmental newspaper articles critiques, Reports on 4 movies/documentaries, multiple pop quizzes, multiple tiny homework assignments that you'll easily forget about, and participation.
Now look, I normally get A's pretty easily. I highly pride myself on my good grades and solid GPA. I can rise to any challenge if I want to, but **** this class. I'm not jumping through the hoops. I refuse to.
Those newspaper article critiques and the reports on the environmental movies/documentaries had to be HAND WRITTEN. Why? Because he wants to make sure we're not plagiarizing (even though there is a program that allows teachers to scan papers and search an online database for that, so its actually easier to plagiarize by hand writing things, but whatever.)
And the exams? check this out - Class before exam: "It will be 60 multiple choice questions" =D YAY! Class of the exam: "It will be 60 multiple choice questions, oh and I added 4 essay questions." MOTHER-****ER! Yeah the entire class got screwed pretty hard on that one because those essay questions were brutally specific.
You may read other reviews and they talk about how he jokes and is knowledgeable. No amount of the same repeated corny five jokes, that make the dull-peanut-gallery-kiddos giggle like blathering idiots, is going to redeem the fact that I had to so much BS just to stay afloat. There is a difference between demonstrating that one has a mastery of the material and just giving you bull**** work to do. I gave him 1's in all categories because I want to drive the point home and save as many people as I can from taking him as a professor. He talks so loud that often I had to covertly put my fingers in my ears just so I could stand to be in class.
Also I don't know if this matters to you but he is extremely politically biased. He uses his status as a professor to spread disinformation to the students so they come out of college being as dogmatically leftist as he is. I'm a moderate-left myself, but through being politically knowledgeable and just generally knowledgeable about the world around me I caught him many times blatantly tweaking information to push his agenda.
If you take him even after reading this, just remember. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

He gives pop quizzes and they are timed, without much time to think about the answers, and they are fill in the blank or short answer. He flies through things in class and does not give you help with what to study for exams you just have to know the entire book. Sometimes he can be moody. Never fall asleep in his class he will ask you not to come back and call you out in front of everyone. He has a bit of an accent and is very loud. His exams are very difficult and are worded confusingly. Be careful and you may want to reconsider another teacher.

His tests are too hard. He teaches his general education class as if they are 400 level classes. Run! People say he can be funny, but failing a class after you have studied is not funny. His grading technique depends on how much he likes you!

I am a nurse so I have a background in biology and I was completely blown away with this class. The harder I worked the worse my grade got. He even told me that getting a 67% on the first exam was good. He left in the middle of the semester to speak in Spain and didn't tell anyone we were going to have a sub who happened to be 10 times worse than him. Then gives a 120 point exam on the material he would have taught but she did not. The labs were confusing, boring, and unorganized with little explanation. The lab reports were graded so severely no one got above a B- on it. The last lab practical he was quoted telling a student he made it impossible to remind us we were in college. His exams were almost impossible to study for and had 2 sections... the m/c and the essay... either one or both could sink your grade. He did not have study guides or aides other than make a giant poster for taxonomy. RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN TO THE NEAREST COMPUTER AND DROP HIS CLASS!!!

The arrangement of Dr. Delis' principles of bio 1 class is sinister. Sure, his lectures aren't that boring because he is loud and enthusiastic (though, he does have a thick accent), but his tests are INSANE. You can almost expect a D or F. His quizzes aren't bad but they're pretty random. His lab practicals are also difficult in that he doesn't tell you what to expect. If he doesn't like your lab report (which he doesn't explain how to do) then he'll simply give you a 60% and move on. Simply like that. He's a ruthless prof and I advise that you avoid him at all costs, especially if you're straight outta high school. He will ruin your gpa, even if you're a good student

Dr. Delis is a very hard professor. He goes through the material way too quickly and doesn't really offer to help you out. He is a very tough grader on the lab reports. He never curves an exam or offers extra credit. He's the reason why I changed my major. Don't take him unless you plan on devoting your life to biology.

Delis was terrible. I took him for a gen ed and it was the most work I have ever had in a class including classes for my major. His attendance policy was ridiculous and his assignments were overly excessive. Do not take him especially if it is for a general education class.

Do NOT take this professor. Do NOT take him for a level 100 class, do NOT take him for a level 500 class. He is by far the worst professor I have taken. The moment you take his tests, you forget the information as you walk out the door. He is NEVER in his office. He is NEVER willing to answer questions. His grading is extremely random. He can give 2 people totally opposite grades, when the content is exactly the same. Do not take any classes with him if you want to learn anything. I promise you, everybody leaves his classes feeling extremely aggravated.

Wow. I was smart in highschool. Took ap science classes and was in top 5 percent. But wow, this class blew me away. You must read the book, because his notes go over very little. He grades hard on lab reports. He does not walk you through labs. You come, he talks for five minutes and then grades papers the rest of the time. One lab we stayed 40 mins over to get everything finished. He e-mails you study guides for labs, but 4 days after he says he did. Tests are hard and tricky, and you have to study for days on end. And you have to make evolution charts, know what branched off from what, even know where the extinct organisms fit in. Before each test he say it is super easy and that there is no reason anybody should have problems with it. It is like he is making fun of everyone. Avoid.

First off, Dr. Delis isn't a bad guy, he's pretty nice. However, he's just too demanding! He teaches a gen ed class as if it's a 400-level class. He never tells you what's going to be on the test (but here's a hint: do the online quizzes, he takes a good amount of the questions from them and puts them on the tests), and they're always on at least a couple of chapters, making you have to study your brains out. I am just fortunate that I didn't flunk this class, and got the credit anyway. Again, he's a nice enough guy, but he's too demanding. I'd take someone else.

This guys sounds good, but if you are not strong in the sciences already DO NOT TAKE HIM, he will rip you a new one. He is never specific on what exactly the tests are on, he takes the questions from minute information that is from one paragraph out of about 300 per chapter. Also has lame "pop" quizzes that you can't really study for because he never tells you what you want to learn. He covers so much information and then doesn't even give out a study guide or let your keep your tests to study from them, granted he gives you back the bubble sheets, but he won't let you keep a test to review the questions on it, the labs are boring and are dreadful, unorganized, and incoherent. My partner in lab and the group behind us learned nothing it seemed during lab because we were always lost. If you like to be organized and have any kind of clue to what is going on or directions of any kind do not take this class or any lab with him in it.

12 of 37 students found this review helpful.

Dr. Delis started out the semester like an awesome prof, then as you get further along he decides if he likes you or not. Now, I don't say this about any of my profs--I think for the most part if a prof seems to dislike me or a fellow classmate it is the result of our actions and take responsiblity for it. Dr. Delis doesn't fall in this category for me. I read the chapters, came into every class prepared, showed up to all classes, stayed late in lab, and if I needed help I would go to office hours. If he asked a question, I would raise my hand and he would blow me off and be like "anyone, anyone??" This happened several times and its not like I am one of those people who tries to answer every question. It was so frustrating because I tried so hard to prove myself to him and he acted like I didn't exist. After a while, it got to the point that everytime I talked to him he was really condescending- like I was too stupid to be in the sciences or something. His tests are VERY hard. They are all mulitple choice which sounds great, but if the test covers 100 pages, he will pull out like 5 questions from ONE paragraph that is not even a major topic of the chapter. And as said before, the lab reports are totally biased on whether he likes you or not- I honestly don't know if he reads them and there isn;t a grading sheet-- just a number on the top of your report. In short-- excited about what he does, passionate, but ulimately uneffective and biased-- even if you try hard.

He does not test you on a lot of the other things you are required to learn! This in NOT a good thing, b/c his tests are f*cking Hard!! Do Not take this man, I repeat, do not take this man!

Dr. Delis is a straightforward professor. He will tell you that his class is not going to be easy but if you do the work you will pass. He recommends that you should read the book and study biology at least 5 hour everyday. His exams are difficult but only if you don't know the material. He's a good professor because he explains he's lecture very well and is willing to answer and questions students may have. He give extra credit too. He does give pop quizzes so you need to look over you're notes every night. His lab practical's are fair if you know the material and he give partial credit. I would probably take him again if I had the chance.

Dr. Delis taught this 100 level course like it was a 400 level course. He expects you to only care about biology. Sometimes I think that he doesnít even realize that you have other courses besides his. He wants you to study every night for at least two hours, plus do all of the other assignments he gives you. The lab practicals are very hard, but manageable if you study everything that could possibly be on the exam. The regular exams are not that bad, but you still have to study like mad for them. Oh and cramming is really not an option, it just doesnít work in this class. He also has a hard time explaining assignments (he is not very detailed), so ask a lot of questions. However, Dr. Delis does know his stuff. He passionately cares about Biology and about his students. If you need help, he is relatively easy to talk to. He is a really cool guy and I could sit and listen to his stories for hours. Bottom line is if you donít want to work harder than ever before- donít take this class. But if you are looking for an interesting challenge and really care about biology, then GO FOR IT!

As a biology major at the time, I was sure to switch majors. Evolution is key to the entire class. Dr. Delis has a Spanish accent which is cool and he knows an enoromous ammount of information on Herpetology since that is his field. The labs were boring and there usually was not enough time to complete them but the very last lab was the best; no one wanted to leave the class. In that lab, we were able to see animals that are stored in the basement. He gives "pop" quizzes but usually HINTS to them the class before. And his tests are not too bad as long as you study. Overall, biology is something that you need to put a lot of time into to succeed no matter the professor. If you want to learn a lot from a professor who really enjoys what he does take Dr. Delis.

If you are going to take Delis there are some things you should know about the class. I had him for Principles of Biology 1. When he says he's not going to teach the class like it is a gen ed he's not lying. The problem is, is that it is a gen ed. He will "tell" you what is needed for the lab reports and exams but he won't go into fine detail; the same fine detail that he will dock you on because you didn't know it. He will give you broad expectations for things then destroy your lab reports on things like graphs and details which he did not mention. The five times I went to his office hours looking for help he was not there. Class was canceled frequently which pushed everything back and crammed a lot of material and grades into the end of the semester. Also don't expect him to be understanding of anything personal that may affect your turning in of assignments. If you take him know that he is very passionate about the material and he does know what he's talking about... he's just a bad teacher.. Grats to Pablo for knowing his stuff because he really does, but its just too bad that he isn't the best of professors because I love Biology but I hated his Biology class.

Alright, this guy was ok, not terribly hard, ok prof and this stuff was interesting but the guy himself is an ass. He is very liberal and bashes you down making you feel like an idiot if you don't agree with him. He also spent a ton of time on evolution and didn't cover 2 chapters that he still put on the test. He acts like he hates America and bashes our country all the time yet he is from Spain. Oh yah and he is obssesed with tree frogs (kinda creepy.) He isn't all that bad and if you have to take him you won't die. Just remember he gets 75% of all the stuff on the tests from the online quizes which doesn't make the tests too hard. If you are a liberal you will love him if you don't really care you will like him and if you are a Republican you will probably get a decent grade just be warned if you say anything about it he will tear you apart. Overall ok just not my top choice.
