I highly recommend you take Dr.Parry! I did not do very well in my World History 1 class but this year I'm doing very well. You have three exams, two papers (which are not hard), and a presentation which also did not take long to put together because you do it in groups. His tests are easy to study for because he gives you a study guide of 12 questions, 8 are on the exam and you only have to write about 4 of the 8. All in all I think he is your best choice for this class and he is always willing to help you, even if it means letting you take tests at different times.

If you are looking for an easy class with a professor that knows his material, take him! He is super nice and the class is based on power points. You have 2 papers to write, and 4 exams. That's it. The only thing that is hard is getting used to his thick accent. But after that, you'll be fine! He is an awesome man, and always joked to my class about us being failures. His grading scale is sweet too! 80%> A. 70%> B. 60%> C and so forth. Definitely recommend him!

Dr. Parry's class was very easy. You just had to be present. He gave you everything you needed to know for the exam's and his grading scale is absolutely crazy 85-100 = A.... he has a very heavy accent but you get use to it after a while... take him for this class

Dr. Parry has a rough accent, but once you get a handle on that you'll be fine. He uses a book he wrote for the class, and it's pretty dry with facts. He is incredibly intelligent and loves class discussion. Be prepared to answer follow-up questions or your own at the end of your powerpoint presentation! The grading scale is as foreign as he is (A=85-100, etc), bonus! As long as you study and show up to class you'll be fine. Movies and powerpoints. Sometimes boring but if you're interested in African history there is no one better.

I had him for World History II, night class. It was very very hard for me to understand but the man knows his stuff. He taught my class and if we had like a questioned look, he would try to bring up an example involving us or even current events. I received a very low grade on my midterm and he was willing to help me lift up the grade. I regret taking a night class but I don't regret taking Akurang-Parry. He is a great teacher. His class is rather easy.

Dr. Akurang-Parry is an amazing teacher. What makes him so effective is that he is passionate about history and wants you to succeed. Participation is KEY. All you have to do is read the material and TAKE NOTES AS YOU READ. College students who don't retain information and who are too lazy to read or jot down a note are the only ones who can say something bad about him, because all he wants is an occasional person to show effort. He gives you a syllabus and outlines the 2 essays early on, so there's no surprise tests or material. He gives powerpoints for every class, which contain the information for the tests. Dr. Parry is my favorite teacher, and I would recommend him to anyone!

If you are looking for a class to sit back and learn nothing and do nothing for an A he is not your professor. He is a very nice guy but he does not tolerate people who don't try at ALL. He loves those who come to class and participate because you are at least making an effort. His classes are all by power point (which might be boring to some but he shows videos to break this up), and he gives you all the essay questions he will put on the test. Prepare very well DO NOT WING IT... he wants details not main ideas and concepts, go for who, what, where, when, why and do not forget the HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE! His class is straight forward, you know what you need to do to get an A which by the way is a 90%.. there is also one student presentation where you simply analyze a passage from one of the readings and give a mini presentation via slide show on what you read... pretty easy grade. The negatives... many people do not take him because of his accent, once you get used to it, it is relatively easy to understand and he is very willing to write things on the board and repeat things... 2. You can not get 100 percent on a test.. however a 90 is an A 3. If you are not a fan of african history most likely the books you will read during world history one will be ALL about africa... be prepared. He is extremely intelligent but not the most friendly guy in the whole entire world. Overall I had a very positive experience, the man knows his african history! He lived in nigeria!!

Dr. Parry is a great professor. I had him for World History I and Sub-Saharan Africa. His tests are all essays and he won't give you higher than a 95% on everything, but he makes up for it by making an A 85% or higher. He uses many different teaching styles to try to make the class interesting and you can see that he really cares about teaching. He is always available during office hours and will help you if you are struggling. The tests require a good amount of studying, but you learn so much. I am in my third year and I have to say he has been my favorite professor here so far.

Dr. Parry is a cool dude. I like him because he makes a great effort to carry his ideas across. Unlike most history profs, he appears to have specialized in several fields and hence is able to relate topics in comparative ways. The man is a work-horse with numerous publications to his credit... more than any ship prof: as a result, he expects his students to work hard. His African accent aside, he speaks impeccable English and has a rich array of vocabulary, perhaps more than some American profs. Anyone that attends his classes once or twice and can't understand his accent is just a moron that does not wish to tolerate minorities. No no, he is not by any means anti-American, but can be very sarcastic when he draws comparisons. For instance, in discussing "Things Fall Apart," he argued that we should not Africanize wife-beating, paused as if he was looking at how shocked we were, and explained that just as in the late 19th-century Iboland, wife-beating was common in the late 19th-century America. Some students don't want to hear such comparisons. It is obvious that some of us don't like to see such a knowledgeable black African challenging and deconstructing our home-grown mindsets! Take his African history courses or World History II for a change. Even if you don't like him as a person, you would learn more about the non-Western world. It is called education, and that is what we go to college to experience.

Dr. Akurang-Parry is a really great prof. You can tell that he is very interested and knowledgeable in the subject matter. He takes attendance every day, but he just passes around a notebook. There is a group presentation component to the class and I would encourage signing up to go first or close to first. It may seem like a lot of work to do so early in the semester but it is worth it. Then you get to sit back and watch everybody else and not worry about it for the rest of the time. It especially helps when finals week is coming up. The papers he has you write are not hard. The tests are short answer and essay but they are not hard as long as you study the information. As long as you cover all of the points that he mentions in class before the test, you will get a good grade on the tests. Don't be fooled by his grading system, though, because if you know only a little bit for the tests, you won't like your grade in the end. Overall, he's a great prof and very interesting. I'm taking him again for WHII.

I found Dr. Parry's class (World History I) to be very rewarding in many respects. The class was introduced to a variety of historical themes and perspectives. Dr Parry always established connections between different topics. Several profs use power point lectures, but I find Dr. Parry's to be unique because there are questions that intersperse the power point notes and which allow students to engage in interactive discussions, though only a few people participated in class discussions. It is not that Dr. Parry didn't try to encourage discussions. In fact, he used every trick in the book to help us engage in discussions. I don't know where the previous person that posted on Dr. Parry got his/her idea that a number of students didn't like Dr. Parry. With regard to my class (WHI Section 02), I would say that everyone liked Dr. Parry. How can you hate this man who goes out of his way to help everyone. Also 86% is A- (minus) and not an A. [] Dr Parry is still the man, in my view, one of the best profs here, and he has proved that we all human beings irrespective of our accents or color. Take his class with an open mind and you will benefit immensely. He is still the only African man standing at Ship!

Everyone said this teacher hated girls and was not so easy. You have to do one group presentation and then your tests are all essay. He gives them to you about a week ahead of time and they are so easy to write about. All you have to do is read a some and be able to answer some questions in class. Then once he knows your name and you answer a lot you get an A for everything. You have to write 2 papers which are so easy and then read a book. So easy....I wrote both my papers 2 days before they were due and got an A on both. So if you want a pretty easy A take him. He does not hate girls he just hates people who don't come to class prepared. If you don't get an A or A - you are just stupid. An A is 90-100 and A- is 85-89. A C is all the way down to like a 65..so crazy. So take this guy if you want an easy A!!!

Dr. Parry is the sh*t. Seriously. A lot of people in my class this semester didn't like him at all and complained about his class. All you do is sit and watch his powerpoints and PARTICIPATE. He will LOVE you if you participate. I began participating and my grade increased alot. Also his grading scale is amazing, a 86 is an A! You write two papers and they are easy papers I got an A on both of them. And his exams? Easy, he gives u a study guide the class before the exam and usually he tries to give it so you can look over things for a week, and it has 17-18 topics on it, and you write on 4 for the exam. He is a very positive man, and he tries to get people interested in history. Take him!

For those who wish to take Dr. Parry's classes, these are 10 observations that you may want to consider. 1. Has an African accent, but easily understandable. 2. Tons of notes that are well-structured for easy comprehension. 3. Excellent preparations for exams: study guide and preview. 4. A variety of teaching methods and willingness to help students. 5. Unassuming, but very self-assured and intelligent. 6. A friendly classroom culture; you will feel at home. 7. Prods you to think by asking several questions; generous with criticisms and answers 8. Knows the subject and does several comparative analyses by connecting various strands of topics. Sometimes lapses into Afrocentric paradigms. 9. Very respectful of opinions and different views. 10. Good accessibility.

Class:WH III & AND AFRICAN HISTORY (B+)
9 of 34 students found this review helpful.

This is my third class with Dr. Parry. It seems to me that Dr. Parry improves his teaching skills every semester. This semester Dr. Parry is using power point spiced with maps, photos of historical actors, monuments, in fact, any visual that makes the class worthwhile. His "power-pointing" is very interesting because it includes well-formed questions that allow students to inter-actively participate in the class. As usual, Dr. Parry is affable and generous with his perspectives and is willing to answer all questions. The content of his lectures and discussions of issues are informed by his own research and numerous publications. In fact, unlike most of the history faculty who don't appear to have a clue of what is happening in their own fields of research, Dr. Parry introduces every topic with insigts into what is current and outdated in the particular field. As a history major, I have had several of the history faculty and can attest that Dr. Parry is the best, notwithstanding his Ghana accent.

I took Dr. Parry's Term 3 African history class. I came away knowing a lot about Africa. Dr. Parry succeeded in pushing us to rethink what we knew about Africa before class. Considering that it was a three-week course, Dr. Parry's excellent teaching methods enabled us to distil large amounts of information. He also ably prepared us for the exam. Dr. Parry was genuine, enthusiastic, brilliant, and above all caring. Take African History with Dr. Parry if you want to put away your Western media images of Africa.

Class:World History I & II (A-)
10 of 35 students found this review helpful.

I was in Dr. Akurang-Parry's Fall 2004 World History I and Spring 2005 World History II classes. I am here to offer my perspectives on Dr. Akurang-Parry as a person and a teacher. As most of the postings here show, Dr. Parry is a nice and intelligent person. I had the chance to interact with him during office hours and he offered advice on several issues: learning, hard work, and future goals. He was/is always willing to help me, and in fact, took me to the library to show me where I could get books for my essay on "Things Fall Apart". And I was in his office when he gave his personal books to his African history students to use as references for their essays. Dr. Parry is unassuming, considering that he has more academic publications than any Ship professor. His teaching method is very simple and informative, in fact, easy to follow. He eschews long stories that professors tell when they have nothing meaningful to communicate to students. As far as I can fathom, Dr. Parry was never rude to students; he acted with poise even when cell-phones rang and students walked in late. As someone pointed out here, some students have been rude, bordering on intolerance and even overt displays of racism. One negative posting about Dr. Parry claims that he hates females! As far as I am aware this must be coming from an aggrieved student, for Dr. Parry was nice to both male and female students. And much of what he has written is about gender equality (if you visit his office see the list of his publications on the right side of his desk). The other negative issue that has been brought up here is his interpretation of history: anti-Western perspectives. Dr. Parry unlike most profs, I believe, speak to the oppressed, the marginalized, minorities, and women in history. And as someone rightly pointed out here, Dr. Parry makes clear at the beginning of each semester that world history is not solely about the glorious achievements of Europeans and Americans, but more importantly, it is an encounter among the world's people and that each should be celebrated. The only issue I would take with Dr. Parry is his insistence that his students should not bother about what he thinks, but should rather develop their own perspectives. Also, it is not true that Dr. Parry only gives overhead notes: his classes involve student presentations, group presentations, in-class group discussions, debates, and films. Any of these are combined at any given class period. And it is not true that Dr. Parry gives study guides a day before the exam (if he does, so what?). As far as I remember, some study guides were even given two weeks before exams. Finally, yes the man was born in Ghana and he has a Ghanaian accent but it is far easier to comprehend than accents of those from Asia that teach here. I believe that if Dr. Parry had been a Frenchman, with a heavier accent, most of us would say that it is "sexy." The world is going global and people should abandon their localized attitudes and accept difference. In sum, I gained much from Dr. Parry's classes, and I still go to his office to talk about my schoolwork and my future goals. Let me declare than I am an African-American female student who would like to have more Dr. Parrys here at Ship: he has made a difference in my life.

I have had Dr. Parry for two classes. As most of the testimonies here indicate, he is a fine professor: intelligent, caring, and dedicated. Some students complained that he focuses more on Africa which is not true. I think that unlike most World History professors, Dr Parry is always eager to show the impact of European activities on the non-European world, and some "Whitish" Eurocentric students cannot stand it. But Dr. Parry made it clear at the beginning of the semester that we would have to deal with history without its glamorization of the West. I also found a lot of "racist" biases against him from the covert comments that were made against him. In my opinion, Dr. Parry is an African who is very proud of who he is and it comes out, as someone pointed out here, in the way he carries himself. Take him for a different perspective on World History.

He was a good professor. The hardest part about his class was the first test because you do not know what to expect from his grading. Once you get past his teaching style and accent, he does a good job at presenting the material and is willing to help if you work for his class.

I was given Dr. Parry for World History I for my first semester at Ship. I had him at 8:00 AM so it wasn't pleasant waking up and going to his classes. But, it was an easy A. Dr. Parry's grading scale goes from 84-100 is an A, 71-83 is a B, and so on. It's almost impossible not to get a good grade in his class. He is also extremely nice and can also be humorous. I took him again for World History II, at 8 AM again, but I knew it would be worth it because in the end, it would help my GPA.

Dr. Kwabena Akurang-Parry is an excellent professor who brings the unheard perspectives of history into play. I like how he informs his students more about African History which is not really covered in the textbooks. He always is available to see a student during or after office hours. Very humorous and enjoys building relationships with his students. His course however is not as easy as you think. He is a very hard grader on papers. Presenations are not too bad. And if you write pages for your exams you will do great. I have truly enjoyed Dr. Akruang-Parry's class. I will never forget him.

Akurang is not bad at all. Hes kinda boring with his lectures but you have two presentations that you work in groups, you have two tests which he tells u exactly whats on the test, you have group discussions which are easy, and two papers which he gives you at the beginning of the semester to do all year. Pretty easy if you ask me.

I turned in my paper three weeks late and i still passed the class. Sometimes the lectures can be boring but at least u dont have to read for homework because all the notes that he gives u in class was what u had to read. If u want a good GPA then take him.  I stopped doing the readings after three weeks, took frequently incomplete class notes, studied the night before tests, handed in an incomplete paper for which i got a "B," and I still managed to get a "B+." While my habits of procrastination did not hurt me, I would reccomend that you still do work in this class just to be safe. Dr. Parry is a very effective professor. He is not only an easy grader, but operates on a very generous curve. His accent -- he was born in Ghana, I believe -- is quite thick, and his frequent mispronunciation of words is pretty damned funny.

Dr. Parry is an excellent prof and I am surprised that we use the word "easy" to mean a lot of things here. As someone rightly wrote, Dr. Parry takes great pains to prepare his students and his teaching is well-structured at the end of the day you know what you studied. He is unlike many professors who ramble on and on without any sense of direction. [] I have gained a lot from his course. Above all, he is a nice, considerate man.

There is a good amount of reading to do, but he goes over all of it in noteform in class. There are a few easy presentations and two papers to do in this class along with two exams and the final. I would take Dr. Parry if you could. It will definitely help your GPA.

Do not let his grading scale fool you. 90-100 = "A", 85-89 = "A-",... It does not matter how great your essays or indentifications are, he will never give you anything higher than an "A-" and most of the time a "B+". 10% of your final semester grade is your participation, which includes your attendance. If you want to earn a full "A" 4.0, you have to be there every single day or you will not have enough points to spill you over the top to get a 90%. He is a superior man and professor. I highly recommend him and suggest you do not miss any classes for any reason.

Dr. Parry is one of the most brilliant profs here at Ship. Throughout, the entire course, he never refered to any prepared notes. He comes to class well prepared and he is the most organized prof I have seen. He is exceedingly helpful. He goes out of his way to help students. I know for fact that he does extra work with students who don't do well in some aspects of his course. For example, I did not do well on the midterm and he asked me to see him during his office hours. Once there, I met a number of students with the same problem. Dr. Parry devised a strategy for all of us to improve our grades. Yes, Dr. Parry has an African accent, but he speaks excellent English, in fact, better than most American professors I know. He also prepares his students for exams, and he is very good at it. I think that that is why students do well in his course and it is not that he is easy as most of the comments here shows. Dr. Parry is simply an excellent professor, someone who is committed to helping students to attain their academic potentail.

He is a horrible professor. I can barely ever understand him and his lectures are horrible. The power points he gives are so confusing that its hard to learn and even though I would read the book chapters, there was still stuff he would lecture on that was no where to be found. His speech is hard to understand and he expects way too much from the class. He'll pick his favorites so if you answer a question once you'll be picked to answer them all the rest of the semester. I would never ever take Akurang Parry ever again. His tests are impossible and the most time consuming things to study for and you still don't pass. In my opinion...pick someone else.

Then on his tests, if you miss something in the identifies all he writes is "other details" giving noo help whats-so-ever about what he is looking for. Oh and if you take him, be sure to learn about Africa and slavery. Its alllll he refers to. And everything was a cause and effect of the slave trade.  WTF? are you kidding me? His accent is a little rough especially in the beginning. But what really makes me angry is his attitude towards americans. He is very biased, and picks his favorites. He does use powerpoint, but the slides are basically empty. He does use a study guide for the tests, which is fairly self explanatory. The presentations are bullsh*t. He tells you they have to be 20 minutes and you have to prepare all these questions to ask the class, and provide discussion questions. However once it comes time for your presentation, he covers all of the material you are supposed to talk about that class period, and then rushes you through it like youre wasting his time.

I hope you like learning about Africa, because that's all you will learn about in his class...my friend who also had Parry said yesterday, "If you get to a chapter where the person's skin was pigmented, it's not important." And it's true! He'll go on about the dramatic significance African soldiers made in, say WWI. He is so biased, and beause of his thick accent, it is difficult to understand him anyway. He never had any control over his class, his assignments could be easy at times, but the hard part was staying awake in his class to know what you were supposed to do. As a future educator, I found him to be out right appalling. Run and hide...this guy's not the answer for an "easy" A.

I will admit I never had him for world history. I heard that he is better at world history than his african history class which I had him for. We got thrown off right at the beginning of class cause he was still in Africa, and we never got back on the schedule. He seemed to either jump around or repeat himself over and over again. I got a B+ in the class which according to his grading scale is a B-. He is not an easy grader at all, but I agree with the one person that said the more you write the better you do as long as it pertains to the subject you are writing on. I am just glad that I actually did pass the class cause no way was I retaking it. Overall he isn't that bad, but I would never take him for anything again. I would rather shoot myself. The first paper I wrote for that guy I got a 75 on because he didn't explain well enough what he wanted. I am an A student and I almost cried. If you think you still want to take him go ahead. I am just telling you what I experienced. Heartache.

Wish I had some positive stuff to say, but when a history professor stands in front of a class and tells them that slavery caused the Civil War I just have to shake my head and marvel at the historical inaccuracy that finds its way into a college classroom. Overall, hard to understand...accent, seemingly one sided view of world history...you will study alot about slavery and women, and largely useless papers and exams.

Dr. Parry is alright, his class sucks and is really boring. But he is fairly easy in grading and makes you do two stupid papers that anybody can do, its just a pain in the ass. This is an upper level class but teaches it like its high school, so don't expect too much from him. He is a nice guy and makes you do these 15 minute presentations but gets so bored with them that he tells you to hurry up and they end up being like less than ten minutes long, he is a bit ridiculous, but easy. Two tests, two papers, one presentation, one final, go for it if you want an easy B or A.

He is hard to understand at first, but you get used to his style of teaching. I had him for a night class and sometimes his voice and the powerpoints can put you to sleep. He is a very nice guy. Participate in class and he will love you. BEWARE OF THE TESTS. YOU NEED TO PREPARE DETAILED answers, he is all about the details. There are A LOT of topics he gives you to study, but you can easily make some of them overlap. Paper was not bad and overall the class is not too hard as long as you get through the tests.

He has a very easy grading system which makes work a lot easier to get A's on, but he isn't very lenient with grades. He rarely gives anyone about a 90% on anything and never gives reasons to what you did wrong. His classes are kind of boring, but overall he's a good guy and knows history well. I do recommend him to anyone who wants just an A, but if you are an over-achiever like some people, you'll go nuts.

His grading scale rocks, but taking page after page of notes from the overhead gets very monotonous. Especially since he tries to lecture the same time you are trying to copy them down. He grades easily, yet no one in our class can ever seem to get a 10/10, its always like 8.6/10, 9.2/10, etc. Essay tests suck, but he gives out the answers he wants about a week ahead of time, you just have to memorize everything. Overall, not too bad, but I'm glad to be done with History after this class!

The class is extremely easy. All the test questions are presented prior to the test. You have to write 2 papers. His grading scale is what sets him apart from all other profs...71% is a B- and an 84% is an A-.

The biggest problem with this professor is understanding him. He has a very hard accent and that makes his classes a little more difficult. The format of the class is simple and getting a good grade is pretty easy as long as you pay close attention. His test are straight from the notes, but you may miss some of the notes because you didn't understand what was said. The class is all lecture and can get very boring. Take another prof if you have the chance.

He was kind of hard to understand because of his accent. He gives out study guides that contains the questions and answers that he wants. You'll have to add a little detail from the book but the tests are pretty easy. He grades on the curve and takes attendence. If you want an easy class take him but be prepared to be bored.
