Everyone says how bad of a professor Dr. Herbert is and how hard her class is, but you honestly just need to try. This is college, and if you put effort into the class and do all of the requirements, you can easily get a B. I actually really enjoyed her class, and it was fun to interact with her and her other students. I personally found her hilarious and she made the class interesting for her students. The only downside is that she will only respond to your emails during her office hours, no other times.

Dr. Herbert has a kind heart but you have to try; she is hard to get along with. It took me almost all semester to understand her thinking. She is a kind woman but comes off very hard headed. Get to know her and you will learn to appreciate her teaching. Her online tests are nearly impossible to pass but she openly admits that. With the speeches and projects she wants you to ask questions; I always emailed and talked to her after class. She doesn't seem easy to approach but she would love to talk to you.

All these comments about Dr. Herbert being a horrible professor and she gives too much work..and blah blah blah blah BLAH!!! GET OVER YOURSELF!! I had Dr. Herbert..BACK TO BACK same day, one after the other. She's a hard work...well..you're gonna have to work your ass off at times in order to pass her class efficiently. She's not easy..if thats what you're looking for..then turn around because you wont find it with her. She's a strong professor with YEARS and YEARS of teaching under her belt, she knows what she wants out of her students and she will except nothing less than that. For her Human Com Theory class we had to do reaction papers about the chapters we read..they were easy..about a paragraph long and then you have a Point of Clarification on a chapter that you choose yourself, there's two exams, both on blackboard and you can use your notebooks. Oh and you also have 2 maybe 3 "extra" credit things you have to do...Oh..and I almost forgot, you def also have a group project you gotta do....DONT WAIT TILL THE LAST MINUTE TO DO IT!!!!!YOU'LL REGRET IT! For Ethnic Studies...all you have really are two "extra credit" things you GOTTA DO!! NOT OPTIONAL! umm..A group project(DONT WAIT LAST MINUTE!! Theres a lot TO IT) 2 exams, both blackboard and I believe thats it. I wont lie...she can be a lot OF WORK sometimes..but she's well worth the time an effort and if you really put the time and effort in..then you wont have too much of a problem.

Okay, So I've been reading the comments that students have left in the past and frankly I'm shocked. Dr. Herbert isn't a bad professor. Sadly, the student who took her class in the past must of thought that college would be easy and that she wouldn't make her class difficult. Well too damn bad. When you come to college you are expected to work and earn your grade and if you feel like the work is too hard, then go to a community college or no schooling at all. I had her for a class and although the class was difficult, I learned more in her class than I learned in three classes where the profs don't teach. If you want to get your money's worth and a good quality education, take Dr. Herbert. And to all those that wish to take the easy way out, so be it, you're only cheating yourself in the long run!!!

She is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. [] She assigns a crazy amount of work and most of it takes place within the last two weeks. Therefore you have no time at all for finals. Shes always got her favorites and def. grades by it. Whatever you do don't take her class, drop it if you can.

Dr. Herbert is an incredible prof. She really knows what she's talking about. It's true that she's picky and her tests are hard, but you'll know your stuff by the end of the class. She jokes around a lot and it's not one of those classes where you're just "talked at" the whole time. She likes participation...or else you get a quiz.

Dr. Herbert is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She is so entertaining and funny. If you are looking for a good time in class take her cause she is great. She gives you speechs that you should work on. Some speeches are graded tougher than others. If you are comfortable talking in front of people than this class is a breeze. Homework is rare but when there is it needs to be done and takes less than 10 minutes to do. Midterm and final are hard if you dont really study. Get on her good side and visit her in her office. She becomes more than a teacher, she becomes a friend. i took her and got an A-. its the best class ever

I have her now and she's not too bad. Most of your work is doing speeches and prepairing for them. There arent too many notes and only 2 in class quizzes. There are no tests (except mid term and final) but dont be fooled. They are really hard and almost everything is from the book which is rarely mentioned in class. She doesnt go into too much detail on subjects which makes it really necessary to read the book. There are no other tests besides that though. The group speech sucks too because your expected to basically change the world in 2 weeks time but the other speeches arent too bad and I know a lot of people that just made them up the night before. If your pretty comfortable talking in front of people this class isnt too bad. She usually tries to tell a lot of jokes and smile all the time. Recommend not getting on her bad side, because she can get pretty pissed off. Takes attendance every day so dont miss a class because it really hurts your grade. You usually get done with class early (20 mins or so) on speech days and some other days, but there are a few times that she keeps you late for somethings. Not too bad of a class. If you keep up with all the work its probably a decent course for a B or so. Sometimes she grades a little rough on the speeches.

Dr. Herbert is a genuine individual and has a good heart. However, when it comes down to why we take this class, we are not looking for positive personal characteristics in a professor. We look for an organized professor, a fair grader, and a timely schedule. I found none of these. I have never felt so "scatter brained" in a communication class before. I felt so unorganized and helpless only because she was unorganized. The online tests were merely impossible which makes absolutely no sense considering they are open note, group collaborative, free for all. I studied well for being a straight A student before this class, had my notes open, had the book in front of me, had other classmates to take the test with, and still received a D on the final. You tell me how that is fair or even realistic. It is a shame because I really could have learned and grown in this theory class but the only growing I did was with stretching my patience and managing my sanity.

There are some really good Human Communication professors at Ship, but I do not feel that Dr. Sharnine Herbert is one of them. When I was first looking into professors, I saw that a lot of students had rated her negatively for being too harsh or neutral and challenging. As someone who enjoyed taking AP classes in High School and generally succeeded (and continues to succeed), I figured everyone else was just complaining. Her class was difficult, irrelevant, and vague. There were three speeches--one accompanying a Service Learning Project. There were also two papers. The papers were not very well explained AT ALL. Most of the grade in the class was based on speeches, but her lectures never had anything to do with how to give speeches. The second speech topic was very vague (for us, we had to make up a product or service and have done an interview with someone to endorse it); we tried to ask questions and get a better idea, but when the speeches were presented it was clear that few to no people really understood how to go about incorporating the interview. The Service Learning Project in my class: there were five or six different groups, and of them only two had successful Service Learning Projects. The other 3-4 groups did their presentations on why theirs didn't work (predominantly that advertising on campus to students was difficult, especially without proper funding); my group's worked because all but one person were commuters, and our project was off-campus. Her midterm and final were online and out-of-class, which would be fine except that the questions were weird, some were repeated/had no right answers or the same right answer twice. This is also the only time where her lecture material became relevant. I am not good at speeches, so I'm not going to pretend that she graded me unfairly, but her class did not improve my speech-giving skills or my anxiety. Check out other professors.

Dr. Herbert doesn't care about her students. She's not easy to work with and not understanding of anything. She makes you feel stupid for asking questions. Her tests are difficult because they are completely different from how the material is presented in class. This was by far my worst class of the semester. I would not recommend taking her. Avoid her at all costs. She has favorites in the class, and if you're one of them, you have it made. However, if you aren't one of the favorites, she will make you suffer. She favors the African American students over the others. If you can't make it during office hours, she's not very likely to set up another time with you. During class, she lectures and you take notes. There are three speeches, which she grades VERY hard. You have other small assignments and a service learning project that encompasses the whole semester. All assignments are graded harshly and there is no extra credit. Overall, my experience in this class was horrible and I would not recommend this Dr. Herbert to anyone.

Dr. Herbert is the worst professor I had all year. She is unclear of what she wants and never is organized. She sucks at explaining dates, and it is always up to you to find out. On a positive note, she rarely gives homework. You have 4 speeches throughout the semester, one of them a group speech. Both exams are online, so you can use your notes and work with friends. She assigns reading for homework, but nobody actually does it. All in all, AVOID!

The ONLY reason I stayed in this class was because I needed it for my minor and Dr. Herbert was the only one teaching it that semester. [] She is never straightforward with instructions for assignments and expects you to figure out how to do EVERYTHING on your own. She is not helpful at all and makes you feel stupid about asking a question. Professors are supposed to help you and Dr. Herbert does care to help you succeed, which is just plain wrong. Dr. Herbert is also insulting. She would make fun of not just me but other students in my class based on things such as skin color and religion. I felt disgusted as I walked out of class some days. She definitely chooses favorites, and if you're not one of them (meaning, if you're not African American) then you are pretty guaranteed to be harassed by her. Dr. Herbert was also at least 5 minutes late to every class which was very unprofessional considering her office was literally right across the hall. AVOID taking Dr. Herbert if you can. I had her for a 200 level class and it was the most work I have ever done, and she made me feel terrible about myself almost every class.

Dr. Herbert is a nice woman...unless you don't understand something, then she kind of gets an attitude about her. Her tests are hard but if you have the notes its not that bad, not saying that it makes it much easier. She is unorganized and if its Friday through Tuesday dont waste your time trying to get a hold of her because she wont email you back. She expects you to understand every word that comes out of her mouth and doesn't take time for you to get down all the notes...Every week you have to do a chapter analysis on usually 3 to 4 chapters...doesn't sound bad but it actually is...make sure you have no life when you sign up for this class because if you do you wont anymore. If you like not having a life and being confused all the time this is the class for you.

Over the course of this class, I had to frequently check my schedule to reinforce that I was indeed in the correct class, Human Communication Theory. When she wasn't rambling nonsense about her personal life, she was uselessly trying to explain simple theories in the most ridiculous phrasing ever. She will often go on rants that by the end I felt like I should feel guilty for being white. Oh and the nutcase is convinced that she, and all black people, by nature, speak in Ebonics (though I could have sworn she speaks English). Well sh*t, I spent an entire semester confused as f*ck, but no wonder I was taking a class taught in another freakin language. Her style of organization is best described as atrociously poor. She rearranges the due dates of her assignments about fourteen times on average, and also tends to forget that she did so. If you ask any specific question about due dates or assignments, the answer is "check Blackboard" and I sure hope you don't have any questions about your grade towards the end of the semester because from about 2 or 3 weeks before finals, and until the following semester, she will make herself completely unavailable. If you are taking one of her classes the only advice I have to you is to tell your mother you love her and jump off the water tower by Seavers.

I thought that Dr. Herbert had good potential at the beginning of the semester, but I was beyond wrong. She needs to step down from the golden pedestal that she for sure thinks she deserves to be on. I loved when she gave us a service learning project, worth half of our grade, and didn't even explain how to do it. If we asked her for help, we got "read blackboard." Um hello .. a document on blackboard can only do so much. You need to be a professor and help out your students. Oh and she will give you about 5 pages of notes, and thats pretty much it, and then give you a 50 question test that has nothing from your notes on it. And she also talks about how much she hates her husband, and how she wants to marry someone else, which is so classy, and really info that we need to know. Not. Really, I would not take her. Don't waste your time.

She may seem like a nice lady, but under that, she has favorites, and if you aren't them, good luck because you will have a very difficult time. But, if you are a minority student, she will like you...She has two pop quizes, that she warned us about in the beginning of the semester, so you spend the begining of every class craming in information in case today is the the day. We never did have a second test. And for the final: well, she decided since the final day was on her birthday, it would depend on us as to whether we had a final or not. How low and juvenile is that??? And she never said yes or no to whether we had a final, we didn't. At least I never took one.

She loves to trick you, and she's so picky about everything. If she doesn't like you, you're dead in the water. THERE ARE LOTS OF PROFS WHO TEACH BOC, GET ANOTHER ONE!!!

this lady is f*cking crazy, she seems to think that this class is the only one that exists. be prepared to do a lot of out of class work. and she gives C's at best. A's only go to those who go the extra mile, which would probably mean lots of money and time spent outside of class. she has her favorites, so to say. her finals and midterms are impossible. on the better side...she always was smiling, kinda like the way satan would as you walk into hell for all eternity. don't take this prof.

She doesn't make an effort to help you outside the classroom. Shes always smiling and funny, but she makes you do the learning yourself. She goes through stuff extremely quick and without much detail. I wouldn't take her again.

Dr. Herbert is a funny lady. I enjoyed teasing her and getting on her nerves most of the semester. But her class is rough, not difficult, but difficult to give effort to. I concentrated my effort on the core classes of my major and sort of left this one slide. Her attendance policy really stinks. You have to be there EVERY day. STINKS. The only cool part is she doesn't come for bad weather, or even mediocre weather. One morning it was foggy and she didn't come for that reason.
