Proff. Orton seems like a hard ass but definitely has a reason. He makes you work hard and have discipline which is needed in life. Keep going to class everyday and working hard even if you think you have no chance of getting a decent grade, his class is definitely not easy but he also has a heart and rewards effort. 3 tests and an 8 page paper on spartacus...make sure you go to class, attendance and being on time is extremely important. He gives you all notes just make sure you review a little bit each day and you will do alright. I learned a lot about history even if I didnt want to.

if you are interested in an easy A or B, don't take this class. orton is extremely thorough when teaching his class. even though the notes are online, they are several pages of detailed information that you will be expected to know for his 3 exams, and he has a pretty strict attendence policy- so forget downloading the notes to skip class. the exams are half multiple choice and half short/long essay, so be prepared to cover a lot of information when studying. aside from the challanging exams, orton really knows his stuff and even has personal stories regarding some twentieth century historical events that he actually was a part of. his lectures are also really interesting because he uses powerpoint to incorporate music and a lot of movie clips within the lecture. if you want to come out of his class with a comprehensive knowlege of history, take him, he's probably the best. but if you want an easy A or a class you won't have to worry about putting study time into, i suggest looking for a different prof.

Professor Orton is the type of guy that you either love or hate, there is no inbetween. His tests involved about 5 map questions, 15-25 multiple choice, 10 fill-in-the-blanks, and some short essay or ID's. There are no quizzes and only one book/video that you will have to do a paper on. He regularly takes attendance for the class, but allows you to miss two classes unexcused without it affecting your grade. They are relatively easy as long as you pay attention in class, but if you do not, than reading the book and notes should be sufficient. All of his class presentations are done through powerpoint, which gets to be monotonous, and his powerpoint slides are all posted on his personal website that he created to make available to his students. His classes often consist of boring videos and annoying hand gestures (those who have had him know), but he is an overrall good teacher. Take him if you want a pretty easy class but don't mind being a bit bored.

Dr. Orton uses an interesting and dynamic, multimedia presentation for each class period which includes extensive use of movie clips. His exams are straight forward multiple choice, matching, short answer, and essay. Make sure you are strong in regards to writing. He places a great emphasis on writing well. Two papers in this class. I liked this class very much.

1.) Prof. Orton isn't an asshole. He's real easy going, and he's a really smart guy... he works in the CIA or something 2.) If you notice, everyone who spoke negativly about him took him early in the morning. I had him in the afternoon which is much easier than taking history with the lights off at 8 in the morning. I guess he could switch up the style of class every once in a while to get away from Power Point and movies, but its not all that bad 3.) You dont have to take notes, he provides them for you. I didn't find his tests hard because they were manily from the notes. This is college, if you expect everything to be simple and easy then leave.

I love Dr. Orton. He's absolutely brilliant and kinda funny at times. I don't really like history, but I don't hate it either, but Dr. Orton brings the best out of it with his power point presentations that include film clips, art, and music. He puts all the notes online for you to print out, gives you all the words you need to know, and a bunch of possible essays, from which, if you have a brain, you can figure out which ones he is likely to use. There are two papers, and the one you really do have to read the book in order to get a good grade, and the other is on a movie. You really have to work hard for this class to get an A, and sometimes he'll put a LITTLE curve on a test. He's a very reasonable guy, he'll work with you all you need... if you aren't afraid to actually do a little studying, I highly reccommend Dr. Orton!!

You don't need to take notes, he puts them online for you. If you read those over twice before a test you will pass. He expects two papers from you, and yes, one is stupid. But he is a pretty generous grader. Class is a little boring, but what history class isn't. Take him definitely. And, yeah if you don't show up to class he reduces your credit. But he is a good teacher, he does make you feel a little dumb, but what teacher doesn't Don't listen to the negitive comments of the other people.

He is the best teacher that I have had for a long time, counting hs...even though his class is one of the longer ones and i had it super early in the morning...he kept me interested with his powerpoint shows that had movies in them. We had to do a few group projects that were difficult to get together, but it was managable. The tests aren't that bad, put things in chrono order, multi, maps, short essays and stuff...but its not a big deal. he puts the notes online and if you read its worth it. if you really like history and actually care about it that early in the morning...roll outta bed, bc hes a good teacher:)

if you want an asshole for a teacher this guy is it. He does everything he can to belittle you and make you feel like crap. He's a shitty teacher, every day he READS from his power point presentations, turns out the lights and expects you to know pointless knowledge. Hes a real asshole when it comes to papers as well...if you make a simple mistake that is it. he doesn't care. oh yea, he's such an ass, one of my friend's from back home died in a car accident the night before an exam and he still made me take it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I personally hate history, and if you do too, I dont recommend taking this guy. He kinda expects you to know dumb shit and he kinda talks to you like you are dumb. I didn't enjoy the class, it was 800am, he turns off the lights and lectures off of powerpoint and it drags on...if you enjoy history..maybe it wouldnt be so bad, but I hate it, and the tests you really gotta study for, and the papers are dumb.

The classes are really easy. The hardest part about them is staying awake. For every class he lectures from a slideshow. And he has a website you can print them out from which is nice. The tests can be tough if you do not study or read the book. There is also a paper in which you have to read the novel if you want to get a good grade. If you read and study the handouts before the tests, you will be fine.
