Dr. Bartel is a really good professor because he knows what he is talking about and when you ask a question he doesn't know he will admit to it and will then find out for you. His class is pretty easy as long as you take good notes from the book because you have a mini quiz for each chapter (open notes!!!) and there are 3 exams (all multiple choice). Take him if you have the chance, really nice and good teacher.

This class was very interesting and I learned a lot. He explains everything and also tells you where you can find it in the book. He shows many videos in class to visualize the concepts he teaches you. Each video is worth 5 points towards your "activity points" for the class, so attendance is important! You need to write one paper, which is a fun paper. There are a list of topics to choose from and you observe a child and write about him/ her. The topics include: watching a child watch tv, looking at a child's bedroom to determine gender/ gender stereotypes, using the Heinz dilemma to determine level of moral reasoning, etc. There are study guides for the 3 exams posted on his web page. To do good on the tests I recommend filling out the study guide and then studying off of that. I did very good on each test, my absences is what brought my grade down (because of the video points). Take Dr. Bartel!

Dr. Bartel is a nice man who wants his students to succeed. He is very helpful during office hours and allows various extra credit opportunities to improve on your grades. His classes are not overly easy, and a good deal of work is required, but it all helps complete the learning experience. Overall, Dr. Bartel is an effective professor, and you will leave his class with a great knowledge of the subject.

Bartel's classes were tedious... they were the same day in and day out, so it got a bit boring. I took it for an elective, but if you're genuinely interested in children and the subject, then you will have a good time. We took a lot of notes, so make sure you go to class each day. The tests were a little tricky, but if you study what you should and the way you should, you'll do fine. His final is optional and should you decide to take it, it will not hinder your grade. He counts your 3 best tests out of 4. He is always willing to help you out outside of class and he is a genuinely nice guy. Take Bartel.

If you are a psych major, take Bartel! He is enthusiastic about what he teaches and gives tons of practical examples to make the material more relevant and understandable. He is a very interesting professor and makes sure to involve the class in discussions every day. His tests are not easy, but he gives helpful review sheets, and his lectures go along with the text. This was definitely my favorite class of the semester.

Dr. Bartel is a good professor and knows how to relate the material to you and everyday life. Yes you have to at least review the book in order to do well on the mini quizes he has at the beginning of every chapter, but you can use any notes you take for these quizes and they aren't that difficult. The reading can only help you... after all this is college, reading is usually required for anything you take. He made class fun and even showed clips of videos to help you grasp things along with class activities. He gives plenty of extra credit opportunities, so it's pretty easy to get an A or at least a B in this class if you prepare for the quizes and apply yourself a little. He even has his own website with note taking guides, study guides and practice exams. Take Dr. Bartel if you get the chance, you won't regret it.

Bartel is lively, enthusiastic, and seems to know his field very well. He supplies the class with study guides for tests and chapter outlines that you can fill in while you're in class. He integrates movies to demonstrate the principles he teaches; this is especially good for people who don't have much contact with children. He gave four tests, one a cumulative final which is optional (he grades your three best tests) and there is one research paper, a child observation, which was only three to four pages. You should come to this class, as participation is graded by writing down your name when you're there for movies or other activities. He has multiple smaller grades which some people prefer, as it's easier to recover from a bad test. Make sure to study from both the book and your notes on the test... they're comprehensive and some people may find them difficult.

This class was great. He gives you all you need for his tests in his notes. Show up for class, take notes and you'll pass his tests. He's really easy to get in contact with if you need help and he gives extra credit the whole year to help your grade if you need it. He's really easy to understand and interesting. Mixes classes up with vidios, activies and notes and puts a study guide with a practice exam on the internet that if you do and study you'll get an A for sure! REALLY GOOD TEACHER!

Psychology is by default a difficult class - but Jeff makes it very interesting. His lectures keep you entertained - he has a powerpoint every day and music/videos to prove his point. Scheduled quizzes at the beginning of each chapter - 2 questions and you can use your notes. He has a website to accompany the class where he provides exam study guides, note taking guides, and practice exams which are very close to the actual exam. He drops the lowest quiz grade, gives opportunity for bonus, and gives u the optional final. He's awesome - def take him!

Dr. Bartel's class was most interesting, and the material covered was highly useful! Basically, the concepts covered are easy to understand and he teaches in such a way that makes the material very clear and concise. The only thing I did not care for were the group projects, as the requirements for some of it were rather vague, such as the journal requirements. Overall, though I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who is interested in how and why people act the way they do. The exams are multiple choice and you pick 8 out of 10 short answer questions. If you use the study guide and prepare a few days ahead of time, you should do fine on the exams. This Prof. is very highly organized, and has all class materials posted on a class web page. I enjoyed this class very much, and would recommend it to anyone who is planning to be a counselor. You ROCK Dr. Bartel :)

Dr. Bartel did an excellent job teaching this class. If you have any problems outside of class, he totally tries to be understanding and help you get your work done. His tests are kind of difficult, but the study guide says exactly whats on the test. You have to read the book, but he explains things very well. He is the nicest prof i have ever had on campus!

What he did at the immediate start of class really worried me for a sec, but proved he really knows his stuff. Quizzes are open note, but you have to take the notes yourself before he reviews the chapter. The questions (both of them) are very scruplous in the reading, which really does prove if you've read the chapter. The tests are really tricky, and cover a lot. But the final is optional, and replaces the lowest test grade. Extra credit can be actually easy to do. I got to compare a Green Day song (Basket Case) to a psych chapter (no brainer). I probably would take him again. so if you've got him, it'll take some time and studying but it will really pay off.

This is one of the easiest classes that i have taken here at SHIP. Of course you have to read the book because he gives you a two question quiz on every chapter but you're allowed to use your notes so read the chapter and take notes and you'll be fine. Also he gives you study guides for the exam that give you exactly what you need to study. Overall i would tell anybody who needs a psychology class for a gen ed to take this prof.

Bartel is the worst professor I've ever had. For one, you better start using those listening skills of yours. He uses powerpoint, but they dont help and you have to add notes of your own by listening to what he is saying. You better speak up in class for him to repeat cause he wont stop. It's not over yet, on your first day of class he tells you that all his tests come with a study guide, which sounds great and easy. It is not! For one there are three pages to the study guide. The first lists terms, next there is a general questions(which there are a ton of questions), and finally an essay question part. They dont help at all, you might as well use your book and read it, for one you dont even need to study the essay part he never uses it. The test has only twenty four questions worth 3.5 points each. To top it off he also has a observation paper. He is very anal about this paper... it has to be darn near perfect or else you will not get a great grade on it. Just to let you know if you had Gen. Psych with him thats a different Bartel, he holds your hand in that class, but not in this one. If you dont believe me then it's your loss. His class is a big GPA killer so avoid him. He seems all nice... a big family man but not in this class. Oh and if you have questions for him dont bother, all he will say is look at your notes or go over the chapter in the book, he is no help. It seems to me that he wants you to do all the work with limited resources. I think he gets great pleasure out of it. I will never ever take another class with this man ever again, he sucks plain and simple. So avoid him at all costs. Believe me I'm not the only one that thinks this. Also do not listen to those positive comments up top notice those are the few people who got A's in his class and are probably a bunch of suck ups. Now you are probably wondering why Im complaining I mean after all I did get a B, well I struggled for it, I earned it the hard way. I focused a lot of my time in his class and as a consequence I suffered a bit in my other classes. Well I think I covered everything. I will just leave you with this saying "wolf in sheep's clothing".

Mr. Bartel grades on how well you speak in front of the class. I signed up for Psych & Women, not Speech class. The so-called debates are really just him being too lazy to teach the class. Discussion is encouraged but he just nods and says uh-huh after every comment, does not keep the discussion going well. I must stay anonymous in case I need one of his classes in the future.

The exams are 50% book material, 25% lecture... the other 25%? Who knows! It's still common sense kind of stuff so you will score well on the exams. The problem is the side projects he assigns from day one. The observation requires you to do a 4 page paper, not difficult but observing kids doesnt go easily with a full load of classes. Then there is the applied project where he gets super-anal over structure... the basic idea of the project is to make a pamphlet on child issues or diseases. It would be easy except he just expects too much for it. Its a huge chunk of your grade but seems like something he threw together just to add extra time into your study load. He is a real nice guy, just not very understanding that you have a life outside his class.

Dr. Bartel IS a nice guy and a decent 'teacher', but be prepared to get lectured for the entire semester. He also takes attendance (I thought we're out of High School but apparently not). It doesn't even matter if you go because if you don't participate (even if you've been to every class) he doesn't give you the attendance points... Regardless his classes are somewhat interesting but who cares if he screws you in the end. I've had him several times now, and it's funny how I get A's & B's in all my other Psych. classes but with him I've gotten nothing higher than a C! Dr. Bartel is also a very non-understanding person. He doesn't care to hear excuses and even if you explain something to him he'll look at you like you're a liar. The assignments are A LOT of work compared to how many points they're worth. He's very particular too, you'd think this was an English class. Overall my experience with Dr. Bartel has been very frustrating. Things are not explained clearly and he fails to remind students when long term assignments are due (like we dont have 4 or 5 other classes plus sports/jobs a social life, whatever, to concentrate on). I'd try & take another Prof. if possible (if you care about your final grade). I don't know if he picks favorites or what but there are much better, more cooperative and effective professors in this department.
