Subject: Great Teacher  (Nov 06 2008, 01:24PM)

She gives you readings in the books to do but if you forget or don't get to read the section she goes over it the next day in class with powerpoints. Anything that you write in your notes is what is on the test. Her tests are a little difficult but if you study you should be fine. She used to be a high school teacher so she knows it's tough in college. She tends to give out BONUS the days before tests and then lets you out early. She gives you EASY online assignments when you don't have class. All around Great teacher!

This class was not too painful, although she required reading responses, which is pretty ridiculous. The midterm and finals proved to be rather hard and extensive... but, she is a very happy person and an energetic teacher. I would recommend her.

Dr. Smith is a great professor and I'm surprised at the negative comments on her page. It's true, she acts as though the class is younger or super inexperienced with geography, but she has good reason to when she asks "Have any of you heard of global warming?" and no one answers, so she assumes we need reminding. She's very helpful, nice to the max, and makes the class applicable to non-geography majors. I was thinking (and kind of hoping) it would be a class full of maps and such, but it's not. It's a thematic class. She gives a midterm and final, closely weighted, lots of easy quizzes, a 1-2 page paper, and instead of a research paper, we made a newspaper page for a country of our choice (less sophisticated, but more fun than a research paper). There are tons of group projects (in-class) and groups discussions. Dr. Smith is great, she's really nice, really smart, and really funny. She's a great choice.

Subject: Elementary School Teacher? I doubt it.  (Jun 07 2006, 09:51AM)

I know many students feel intimidated that they feel like they are in middle school geography with this woman, but she definitely has an effective approach in teaching this material. I'm a horrible test taker, and I'll admit, my study methods are usually good, but for her examinations, Dr. Smith always knew how to make things tricky. Even though I maintained a "C" average in all the examinations, I put a lot of time in attending group activities, participation, projects, and the final examination (WHICH SHE SHOWS YOU WHAT WILL BE ON THAT FINAL EXAM, INDICATED ON THE SYLLABUS THE FIRST DAY!). Most will consider Dr. Smith a kindergarten teacher, and that's fine, mainly because geography majors truly believe that they are mature and she is not. But remember, you were the one that elected the class, not her. So, if you feel babied and you think that Dr. Smith is holding your hand, go take Dr. Jantz for World Geography. I plan on taking Dr. Smith because I know confidently most things that I have never learned of in geography can easily be explained by that kind woman. Do the assignments and group activities and show her you want to learn...then she will give you the impression that you're not five. Awesome lady...definitely taking her for Cartography in the near future.

Dr. Smith is a very effective professor. To those who feel as though she treats you like children, you probably deserve it. If you can't make a comment on here with out using profanity, you probably still need to be treated as a child. Heaven forbid as a college student the professor expect you to read! Grow up, this is college and still a lot easier than the real world is going to be! Dr. Smith is more than just a lecturer, she puts faces with the places. She makes geography more interesting than looking at a map and learning locations. The two who left negative comments have not had a bad professor yet at ship. If they ever do they would appreciate Dr. Smith's approach in teaching. I recommend taking her if you get the chance.

Dr. Smith is very helpful with anything that you would be struggling with. She likes to do group projects and she's an all-around fun teacher. The map identifications on a test can sound intimidating, but if you study for 20 minutes, you'll know. We had 3 tests, and one group presentation. She can also give extra-credit to your group if you all are truly interested and connect it to other topics. Her tests are easy and her class is so much fun. I would highly, highly recommend taking this class.

She is such a laid back teacher! Her classes were easy, tests weren't that bad, and her grading policy is relaxed... She's understanding, and makes class entertaining. She does have you take 10 map quizzes, but they just bring your grade up. I recommend taking her - you only write one 3 page paper that is about your family compared to others around the world... very easy!

Dr. Smith really gets you interested in the topic. Ten map quizzes, fifteen questions each. She gives you a list of what you need to know. Tests with multiple choice, fill-ins, and short answers. No killer essays. She's an all around congenial person. Highly recommended!

Dr. Smith is new to Shippensburg this year. She is an excellent teacher and has fun with her students. She is very laid back and understands that students like to have fun at college. She gives about 3 tests along with 10 easy map quizzes. She gives you a copy of the map with about 25 places on it and then picks 15 of those for the quiz. Its real simple. I would definitely recomend her to anyone!!

I saw another post on here about how she treats students like kids...and you are dead on balls accurate. I've never had a professor circle all the pronouns that I didn't capitalize just so I would be informed that they should be capitalized. She has a VERY passive-agressive attitude and will eat you alive if you slip up. She yelled at our class because few students didn't do the reading assignment and she complained that she couldn't conduct a class if we didn't read.... to dr. smith (if she reads this): ahhh HELLO??? Whether 1 student or 100 students read or show up to class, it is YOUR responsibility to teach...this is what you are being paid to do. Don't give us this bullsh*t about you not being able to teach or conduct a class if we don't do the readings. Total BS

i have nothing against el. ed. majors, but i think it's funny that 2/3 of the other reviews on here for jan smith are positive and from El. Ed. majors. I think it's funny cause Jan Smith treats you like a f*cking fifth grader. She used to teach middle school, and i think she should go back! She talks to everyone like they are stupid, and makes everything idiot proof. I don't mind if a teacher cares, but wtf? I don't appreciate being talked down to. This is college, not fifth grade. she is overly anal and is a nut. her classes are easy if you just do what the sylabus says. smith is a twit.
