First, there is no final! That is always a positive. You have a lot of quizzes (unannounced) plus 2 papers. People say he grades the papers hard, but I did not have a problem with them. The quizzes were sometimes tough, but if you are polite in class and volunteer, you should do well. As far as the prof, he likes to talk... and tell stories. It is not a bad thing, but people tend to get bored. He is a great guy though. It is an easy class. I would recommend it. Oh, accept he should lay off putting down Levitown!

Dr. Kimmel really made sociology interesting. All that we had were small quizzes, some take home work and a few papers. The final was a take home paper. It's an interesting class and I overall had a great time listening to him lecture.

All you have to do is read the material. He always picks good books, so you dont have to worry about being bored with the reading. He lets you rewrite your first paper, to show how he grades. He's funny and nice.

Out of all the Soc. courses I've taken here at Ship, and there have been a lot, this one was by far my favorite. I learned so much about juvenile delinquency in that class that I will carry with me many years down the road. You do read about 3 books but they are all very interesting. His grading consists of short quizzes and three papers, so if you do the readings there is no reason you cant get an A or B in his class. But beware, he is strict about cell phones. He will take 10 pts off your grade if your phone goes off in class so make sure you keep them off. Other then that he's a great prof and I definitely would recommend him.

I applaud this man very much. I see a few people complain about him because he can be tough or he has boring lectures. I myself do find him challenging and also interesting. However, I do sometimes trail off from his lectures when I have other things on my mind but I make the effort to participate and engage in conversations with him. To me, he keeps the class interesting by using real examples involving his lectures which are funny, but also informative. In fact, he kind of inspired me to select Soc. as my minor. I think he is a very friendly and informative professor and I feel like I can talk to him on a regular basis.

Dr. kimmel is seriously the best professor I have ever had. First of all, hes very down to earth and he's young, so he knows whats going on with college students. Secondly, he has an awesome take on the world and he tells it how it is. And lastly, his class is very interesting and very easy as long as you do the work required and participate in class. I highly recommend taking any class with professor kimmel... I know that if I can ever fit another kimmel class in my schedule I'm definitely going to take it.

Kimmy is a really smart guy. He knows his sh*t and his class can change your outlook on society if you let it. His readings are dry at first but extremely profound when you discuss them in class. The books he requires are absolutely amazing. A friend of mine, who never reads, even agrees with me. His papers seem harder than what they are, and he grades grammar hard. He has a list of words that receive letter grade reductions, no kidding! But he loves his job and is one of the best.

Chad Kimmel is one of the nicest professors I've met. He's ridiculous, funny and sometimes completely weird. Don't get me wrong his class was HARD. It required at least two readings every class period where they were at least 20 pages long each. Also, we had to read 3 chapters at a time sometimes. I just think the work load was a lot. However, he also grades the papers really hard too. The first paper will make you want to quit immediately. But, it does get better. If you just do the readings and try to do a good job on the papers you'll have no problem pulling off a B. Although, he gets really annoying talking about Levittown every single class. It made my stomach curl every single time he'd mention it because I already know all about it, and I have to hear the constant babble. If you want to know Levittown's entire life story, take him! No, he's not a bad guy and most people will enjoy his personality, but sometimes I think he gets the intro to soc. classes confused with his soc. majors.

This was one of my favorite classes at Ship, and I'm a finance major. Dr. Kimmel tells a lot of funny stories; he's the kind of guy you'd want to go out to Wibs with. Suprisingly enough, I also learned a lot. Classes go by quickly, and he often lets class out early. There is a lot of papers and some pop quizes, but we didn't have a single test. Pretty easy A if you do the work.

If this man's class is all full and you need a soc credit, wait. Seriously, wait until he is available. And also, don't listen to all of those neg comments about this guy. This class was awesome...there is a lot of reading to do, but it is worth it. When he told us about all of the reading, I was a little overwhelmed. And I thought to myself...I am not going to read all of that, it's stupid. Well I was wrong!!! The books that he chooses are great, I read every page off all of them. When I started reading the one book, I honestly could not stop. The class atmosphere is great also...it is a light environment. By that I mean, when he gets to class he is not like all business. He takes some time to just talk with everyone. That is nice to have. He is so easy to talk to, and is always available. For example, my family took a trip in Sept, and Chad work with me so that I could get all my work done before I left. He went out of his was to help me out, and he would do that for anyone. Just going to class gets you 5% of your grade. Overall, great class, great professor...take him if at all possible.

Chad Kimmel is one of the best professors here at Ship. He makes his class fun and interesting. If you do all the required reading (which isn't anything difficult), you should get an A. Also, he allows you to rewrite the first paper of the semester. He gives you enough feedback so you can get a perfect score the second time you hand it in. Take Chad if you can!!

This was one of my favorite classes bar none! One test all semester, several small papers to write, and a great in-class environment! The only draw back was that it was a lot of reading-some was enjoyable, others were tedious and boring...but all-in-all not horribly bad. Prof. Kimmel has a great attitude and LISTENS to what everyone had to say. The final was a group project and was almost fun to do. If you need Soc credits Chad's your professor-it was nice to have a professor that injected some enthusiasm into his class!

Professor Chad Kimmel is an excellent instructor. He is a scholarly individual who will soon be completing his Ph.D. His tone of voice is his best attribute. He has a way of speaking very mellow, creatively, and with humor. He is also a very compassionate understanding individual. His course overall is not as easy but not hard either. If you are a person who has the passion to understand social human behavior, you should do well in his class. He brings ideology and socialogical perspectives to the table.

Sure, his class is a breeze, but what Shipp student do you know who wants to have to work themselves to death for an A? I would strongly suggest taking him for any class he offers.

I had heard sociology was a tough course... having Kimmel for it made it so much easier. He doesn't work from a boring textbook like most professors, but instead from novels. Most of which are easy to read; the amount of reading can catch up to you, but if you pace yourself, it's easy to get done. He grades extremely easy on the paper, and his tests are fairly easy. I would definitely take him for another class just because he's a generally happy guy who tells some pretty good stories about getting into fights with his neighbors. Overall, it's an enjoyable class with an awesome prof!

This guy is great. A really young professor, he can actually relate to students. (he wants you to call him by his first name and he talks in third person) I agree, he is very interesting if you hang around and talk to him, you really can learn a lot more than just course materials from him. I don't consider 3 or 4 chapters over a 3 day span "a lot" of reading, especially because the books are barely at a high school level. You know what you are getting tested on and he grades softly on his essays and the short answers on his tests. He also has a really cool group project that takes the place of an exam. Take this guy if you can because it would be totally worth it.

I originally took him for intro to soc. After the first class he gave us a journal article we had to read and take a quiz on as soon as we got into class without discussing it first. He thinks everyone should know soc before coming in. Also on the first day of class he went off about how he makes $70,000 plus his wife's income and that's not enough for him. Does he realize there are people in that class room that have parents not even making as much as him alone. I ended up dropping intro in the second week, took it again with a different prof and got a b. Then I took him again two years later for criminology, didn't want to but he's the only one that ever teaches it. He never taught anything we met once a week instead of the two we were supposed to and our tests were online... Easy right? Nope! The tests were 55 questions and he gave us 60 minutes after the first test the whole class asked for more time and he refused saying the it department said that's how much time we should have. After the first few tests I still wasn't doing well. I went to talk to him and said I don't understand why I'm doing so bad and he goes 'well its not the class because not everyone is doing bad so it's just you' he didn't talk about anything in criminology, told us about his cousin who got arrested for drugs and would babble on about random things. Oh and remember how $70,000 wasn't enough for him before? He was building a house!! He talked about how his sister in law works for welfare and they know they ins and outs so they were talking about playing with the system. I got a d in that class, which at the same time I was taking forensic psychology and got a b, yes they're different classes but they're similar and forensic psych was a 400 level class. All around a horrible guy avoid him at all costs. Seriously should not be a professor.

When I walked into this class as a freshman I thought, it's a GenEd and it shouldn't be that ridiculous. I was wrong. I have won AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS for my paper writing and he handed back my first paper with a big GIANT F!! He has an authority complex because when I was baffled about my grade I went to the learning center and they told me after reading my paper that they only had time for people who NEEDED their help and they wrote a note to Kimmel stating that they refused to help me because it was unnecessary. When this was taken to him, he dismissed me and so I did the only thing I could, I dismissed his class and took it with Joel Schoening (-sp?). Don't take him if you want to take a Sociology class since he thinks he is teaching English Writing.

Kimmel will always say you are wrong when he asks questions and you try to answer them. So after he makes you angry by listening to him talk about how he is so well traveled he is he will throw a quiz at you asking questions about things there are multiple answers for and give you a 5 of of 10 on every quiz. He aggravates and irritates and I would not take his class. He doesn't care if you pass... it actually seems like he was happy that he failed me. [] The paper I wrote for his social class he didn't even read it he just looks for the bold headings and he grades on who he likes. Anyway this guy is a joke and I hope he reads this and gets angry because everyday I walk out of class angry wondering how this kind of person has a teaching degree. It shouldn't be up to this d bag whether you pass soc or not so don't take him and if you do make sure you turn in every paper and read the eres online cuz that is the only thing he gives the quizzes on.

Holy crap. Do not listen to any of these comments. Chad was the most boring professor I ever had. Every class consisted of him sitting in front of the class jabbering on about his wife, kid, past life, and past studies. He never taught us a single term related to sociology. He made us read 15-30 page readings every night, and then would start the next class by talking about the readings, that no body read, but soon drifted off into randomness again. Then at the end of the year he expects you to know terms, and ideas that he NEVER discussed in class. It was damn near impossible to work up the energy to go to class every day. And if you miss a class you lose 2 points from your grade. I know that doesn't sound like much, but if you take his class you will realize why it is impossible to keep students in his class without this penalty. So if expect to learn something about sociology, take someone else. If you value education do not support Chad Kimmel by taking his class. He is a terrific sociologist but a terrible, TERRIBLE professor.

This class has gotten progressively harder, based on the earlier comments on this board, compared to what he does in class now. The readings are very boring, for the most part and sometimes they are rather long. The guy is very nice, but all he does in class is talk about himself and Levittown, PA, which is where he grew up. He tells some of the most rediculous stories..some are funny, but not all of them are. There really is no point to most of it. Sometimes he uses a story to illustrate a sociological concept, which is fine, but most of the time he just tells stories that have absolutely nothing at all to do with the class. Like I have nothing better to do than sit there for an hour and a half and listen to him explain how his neighbors used to burn tires and he didn't like the smell of it, so he tried turning them in (to no avail) to the EPA. LIKE I GIVE A sh*t!! The guy needs to teach, and not just tell a bunch of pointless stories and make you read a bunch of boring novels. He has a very strict attendance policy.....you can only miss 2 classes all semester, and if you miss more than that, he drops you a letter grade for each one you miss. There is some lame ass group project that you have to do, which is another negative for the class. I would prefer to be graded on my work alone, not a collaborative effort with some other people who may not really give a damn what grade they get. At least this isn't one of those touchy-feely, sit in a circle type of soc classes, which some other profs make you do. I'll give him that much...at least he treats you like an adult in that respect. Overall, I've had several sociology classes, but I really can't say I learned a damn thing in this one. I'm not big soc fan to begin with, but at least I can say that I learned something in the other classes, whereas in this one, all I did was hear stupid stories about this prof and his friends and neighbors. I didn't sign up for storytelling 101. Oh....and he does always refer to himself in the third person. That is quite annoying. This class is certainly passable, and if that is your only criteria on choosing a class, then take him. However, if you really want to get something out of the work that you put into a class and learn something about sociology, then this is definitely not the class for you and I would urge you to take another prof for this class.

His class is interesting, but the test are hard. The questions on the test are kind of off the wall. I do not remember going over half of the material in the classroom. The papers are hard to write also. He gives everybody a selection to read and then write about. But if your views on the paper do not go along with his...then it is wrong. I always thought that papers in class were to give facts and our opinions on the subject, not the professor's opinion. If I had the choice to take the course over again, I would choose to have someone else.

Professor Kimmel hasnt had much experience teaching and it does show. Id imagine in a few years, his classes will be much better. At the beginning of the year he wanted to read our class a short story every day often completely irrelevant to the course. He seems unsure of his teaching methods and it results in semi-unorganized class time and lectures. Chad himself is a pleasure to talk to. Hes one of the nicest and most open-minded people Ive had the privilege to meet. However, his class is very easy, he grades easy to a point that I could take a test without doing any reading and sleeping through class and still come out with 100%. On a major paper, which I had done no reading for and wrote hours before turning in, I ended up with an 86%. Some people may see that as a good thing, but I was expecting more involvement from a college course. I would take Professor Kimmel again but not in a course that I wanted to challenge myself.
