Vernooy-Epp was a great professor for this class, in my opinion. You had three pieces for each test--a novel, a play and a poem. You had to complete the piece before the class they were discussed in. She would spend about two days talking about that particular piece before moving on. She would also put the guides to the pieces on D2L for you to print out. Any additional notes, she wrote on the board for you to copy down. Basically, if you pay attention in class, take down all the notes, and study them, you'll do well on the tests. They're pretty easy as long as you do that. On the brighter side, I hardly read any of the material, and I still got a good grade. :. But I'm not recommending that course of action. ;p

V-Epp's class is a lot to handle at times, but I think that is what these introductory classes are aimed to do. She assigns these dreadful mini-papers called reading logs. You don't realize now, but they are evilness wrapped up in a neatly typed, single-spaced, one page paper that are due every class. Besides the reading logs, you must complete a position paper, an annotated bibliography, and a final paper centered around one analytic approach. The material in the class is tough, but VE allows you to absorb the material and get the most out of literary theory. As a person, I am still unsure. I loved her for about 75% of the semester. She was sweet, approachable, caring, and funny! However, towards the end of the semester, I must have caught her on her off days, because her comments seemed harsh and indirectly hurtful. Regardless, I would take another class with her in a heartbeat.

Dr. Vernooy-Epp is great. She tells you like it is. She wants you to do well, so read the amazing books that she has chosen for the class and do the work. At first, I thought it was going to be a tough class. But it turned out to be my fave class at SHIP. She is funny, and really nice. She brought us cookies, candy bars, etc. to eat. She gave only a few random quizzes and helps you edit your papers so much that by the end of writing it, you just want to never see it again. BUT, my papers are probably the best things that I have ever written. I love grammar and so I suppose this helped me out in her class as well. TAKE her though. She explains everything in great detail and you will do great as long as you follow the directions to her assignments and read.

I love Dr. Vernooy-Epp. I'm not even doing well in the class and I still like it. She really knows her material and is extremely passionate about it. Just be prepared to read a lot before each class. She does cancel class on occasion due to editing books and what not. But I recommend her to anyone.

Okay, the first time I walked in the classroom and read Dr. Vernooy-Epp's syllabus, I thought to myself, "This is a joke. This entire class is a stupid joke. I feel like I am in kindergarten." I was going to drop at the end of the first week and take either Professor Ali or Dr. Mao, but after much further persuasion from a friend, I decided to stay. It turns out, she introduces various approaches of writing that were never introduced in my high school English class. Her methodology of approaching the stuff we learned through various techniques of prewriting were quite effective. I have also went to see her a lot in office hours, and she seemed very helpful and always attentive to the student's needs. I would suggest her not for an "A," but for the appreciation of understanding College Writing a hell of a lot better. Dr. Vernooy-Epp wants everyone to do well, not for a gen ed., but to succeed in writing essays throughout our college careers. Definitely an awesome lady.

She is one of the sweetest professors I've had. She loves literature, and would do anything to help her students. The novels she chooses are a little bland, but if you pay attention in class, an A is easy to get. There are 3 exams, and a couple of quizes. You can drop your lowest exam grade, so you might not have to take the final if you're happy with your first 2 exams. You have one analytical essay to write, but nothing too time consuming. She makes everything fair.

This professor is the best! She is always available to answer questions, and is very willing to proofread your paper before you have to hand it in. She is entertaining in class without going off on tangents, and provides interesting background information on the books you have to read. Her quizzes are not hard if you read the material, and if the whole class does not do well on the first one, she will usually drop it. She also allows her lower level classes to drop 3 quizzes. She really knows how to teach, unlike some college professors. I would highly, highly recommend taking Vernooy-Epp!

Dr. Vernooy-Epp is a wonderful professor. She is so clear on what she wants from you, and she's really reasonable in her expectations. She gives great feedback on all assignments and exams, so if you do something wrong the first time, you can fix it for the next time and still do great in her class. She's always available to help you out if you need it, and she's so sweet to everyone. She also manages to make a really boring subject interesting, and the discussions in her classes are great and make you want to read the books. I highly recommend taking her if you have the chance, she's a great, great professor!

I hate poetry, and that happens to be Professor V-E's specialty. So, needless to say, that's what we studied in this class. She is adorable, enthusiastic, and young. She has a passion for her subject, which made it better than bearable. She's always willing to speak about your research paper, test, or anything else over lunch or in her office. We only had two tests, one 1/3 into the year and the other one, a final. So the spacing was very weird and meant there was a much heavier work load at the end of the year. Sweet lady.

If you just do all your work that she assigns and go to most of her classes, you can easily get a B. Her homework takes about 15 minutes and she doesn't give much out. If you just follow the criteria she wants for the papers, you can easily get a b on all of them. Very nice lady who loves her job. Take her

I have her right now for Bible in Lit and she really knows her stuff in that class. The class really is called "The Bible in the Romantic Period" and the Romantic period being her specialty, she excels here. She is sensitive to students who may not understand the abstract subject matter and seems to understand that not everyone gets it the first time around. Her classes help because she explains the text and also goes over what was going on historically in that time that may have influenced the author. The reading load is not heavy; I'd call it expected for a 300 level English class. A group presentation followed by a 3-4 pg paper. I'm fearing the 8-10 page paper with annotated bibliography with 10 sources, but she'll be there to help out. I would definitely take her again if I can.

As seen below, I was given Dr. Vernooy-Epp as my Intro to Literature professor for my first semester of freshman year. I thoroughly enjoyed her class so I decided to be the first to give her a comment so the word would get out about this great new prof. She is a really nice woman, even though college writing seems to be a lot of work. She gives you three papers to write, and there is a LOT of other writing activities that have to be turned in with them. However she is only trying to make everyone's papers the best they can possibly be. She also was very reliable with office hours and helped as much as she could. Take her if you can.

Dr. Vernooy-Epp demands a lot of her students but she is manageable. I am a Criminal Justice major and I personnaly could give a rats ass about literature and I got an A in her class. She is such a sweet lady and ALWAYS willing to help you. Yes, we had to read 7 books in one semester but she makes it up to you. You are given easy quizes on the reading you were supposed to do that are pass/fail: need to answer 5/7, and if you even read cliff notes should pass easily. There are no tests at all. She assigns easy informal writing assignments that are also pass/fail. There are also 2 Analytical papers for the semester but she helped us out because we have reading so much. If we wanted, we can use the grade we got on the first one to transfer to the grade of the second one and not have to write a paper. Now, if that is not fair, you are simply a lazy asshole and should consider working at Burger King.

She is an awesome prof! I had her for college writing and she has taught me a lot about my writing style. She is very big on DETAIL! She has you write 3 papers, but you must do all the prep work and hand it all in at the end. She doesn't give much homework, only what might be due in class that day or reading from the three books you must read. You will end up writing your papers based on the writing styles of the authors. I felt very welcome in her room anytime for help I needed!! I would take her again! Choose her!

Dr. Vernooy is the most effective writing prof. she not only gives you excellent feedback on everything you write and do but she also gives plenty of handouts to elaborate on skills you learn in class. as long as you pay attention and do the work and follow her instructions you'll be just fine. i thoroughly enjoyed her class this semester.

For every essay, she guides you and helps you develop a well-crafted, well-written essay. You will learn so much from her, as long as you do your work, show up for class, and give it your best (in other words if your not a slacker). I would highly recommend her over anyone, and if I have the chance to take her again for another class, she would be the top choice.

Doctor Vernooy-Epp is a new teacher at Shippensburg this year. Her class was always a lot of fun. She's very energetic about her job and likes to have personal conversations with her students as well. You write 4 essays in her class, and for each she has detailed steps to complete the essay which makes it much easier than normal. Also, she lets you bring in your essay before you hand it in and she makes a bunch of corrections for you to fix which helps you get a better grade. You also read a few stories and have take home quizzes on them for an easy 20 points each. I would definitely take her!!!

Dr. Vernooy-Epp is new to Shippensburg, but you can tell that she really loves her job. She is a bit eccentric at times, but that is mostly due to her excitement of doing what she is doing. She doesn't yell or raise her voice, and is extremely nice to all of her students. I am not completely done with her class yet, but it is an extremely easy class as long as you do the assigned readings. There is a quiz at the beginning of every class, but they are almost all open note and only a few questions. There is one paper to write, but she meets with everyone of her students ahead of time to make sure they know exactly what they are doing. The mid-term is given to you ahead of time to study from and the test is open note. So, Basically you can prepare your answers ahead of time and then just copy them down when you take the test. I can't speak for the final yet, but I'm sure it will be a piece of cake. Definitely take this professor. You will get a great education and a very good grade.

She's a crazy phsycho! Honestly she isn't that hard but I tried to explain something to her and she cussed me out saying she didn't mess up when clearly she did. That was the second week of class and I never spoke again unless she spoke right to me. This kid also got up to go to the bathroom in the middle of class and she told him to come sit back down and when he didn't she called the dean and took the rest of the class period dealing with the issue. Just be prepared for her mood swings and busy work.

Judging on the past comments on Dr. Vernooy-Epp, I felt that I would be in good shape. As an English major as well as a senior, I know how to write, and know how to manage my time. This 100 level class, however, has me banging my head against the wall and has cost me a fortune in energy drinks, to make up for the lack of sleep I receive every night. Vernooy-Epp has a friendly and bubbly personality. She comes to class perky, but these outward appearances do not fool me. Her class is one filled with horror. For every class period, you have to read between 40 and 60 pages of theoretical text, and analyze it in a 1-2 page paper. No matter how much you write, it seems that it is never enough nor the correct thing...it is very hard to receive full points on these writings. A participation grade is also figured into the class, and I hate this aspect as well, because it punishes the people who are shy as well as those with social anxieties. The 2 or 3 social butterflies soar, having a great advantage over the others. Besides, Vernooy-Epp does not provide enough chances for everyone to volunteer, so even when I do stick the hand in the air, it is rejected. I am not a prude, but this woman also makes sexual references constantly in class. This makes the class feel almost like high school and not college. Do not take this professor. If you enjoy doing tons of busy work, go for it, but I have other classes and obligations.

Dr. Vernooy-Epp is a joke. For this Brit Lit class she spent more time on the romantic period than any other literary period because the romantic period is her "specialty.." Even when the class was learning about the modern period, everything had to relate back to the romantics. It sucked. If you take her, be prepared to read for 8 hours a night. All she does is assign poems and womens literature. She does not touch on much of it during the class, but then puts her interpretation of it on the exam. She will set you up to fail unless you go see her during office hours, but good luck with that because she rarely shows up, even if you have scheduled an appointment with her. Her personality is sweet and polite, but she will tear off your testicles and eat them. She is very vindictive. She is a procrastinator, so if you like to prepare for exams a week in advance, forget it, she will not give a review sheet until the day before the exam. I will never take this professor again. The A I received in this class is pure hard work and help from other professors. []

The title says it all. You would never think that you could hate such a kind, happy, perky person so much. She's the kind of professor that you could love, if only her classwork were not an utter nightmare. You will be required to read an ungodly amount for each class period. I'm an English major, the kind of person who likes to read a lot, and I'M bitching about the amount of reading she assigns. She even takes pride (pride!) in giving large reading assignments. She CONGRATULATED my class after the class withdrawal date was over, because we were sticking it out with her class despite the enormous reading schedule. And you'd better read everything, because she throws surprise quizzes at you and grades you heavily on discussion participation. Hearken to my laments, readers. Vernooy-Epp ruined an otherwise enjoyable semester, all by herself. This woman is a NIGHTMARE. Do NOT take her!

...unless you enjoy page after freaking page of BS writing for no purpose at all. for every page on an essay you write, you WILL write 3 or more pages of "developmental" worksheets. its all about quantity over quality here, folks. i was sure i was a really good writer, A's on papers all through high school, but nothing's ever good enough here. if you don't use her stupid processes, you're automatically wrong. you're not allowed to have your own writing style, and her topics are just plain [dumb]. add to that all the reading she makes you do, and all the minor in-class writing assignments, and you will put twice your usual effort into this class, and probably still not get a good grade. i know i didn't. it isn't worth the effort and the frustration - or the GPA drop. PS-i took this class based on the previous ratings - THEY LIE!!! she is a nice lady, but her methods SUCK[]!!!!

What to expect: a lot of bullsh*t work. You'll write at least 2-3 pages of nonsense highschool bullsh*t every class period. You'll read 220 page books in a week. You'll have to scribble down the correct way to do things the day the assignments are due. Her comments on essays are ridiculous, a student wrote 2 solid pages reflecting one comment and she wrote "needs to be developed more." Yea, develop this. She doesn't grade as easy as what's written on here. 85% of the people in my class say that they regret choosing her class based on her comments on here. Take her if you want, but you'll be doing a lot of work for nothing.

Dr. Vernooy-Epp may come across as a hard*ss sometimes, but she is generally a nice person. If you ask her a question, be prepared to receive a mouthful. But that's really not a bad thing - she's just trying to be sure that you understand. It's kind of hard to take notes because when she writes on the board, she jumps from section to section then back again, but just turn you paper sideways and do as she does and you should be fine. :. Oh, and get this: like many English classes, there is no final, but we did have a paper due the last day of class. We somehow got on the topic of tea in class (I'm still not sure how) and someone had the suggestion of having (and here's the funny part) a "tea party" on the day that the class was scheduled to have a final! A tea party! Despite what you might be thinking, it was actually pretty fun!

Overall, shes a good prof. She knows her stuff and makes the class experience enjoyable, however.. the instructions in some of the assignments can be a little..vague and a lot of things are left uncertain and some ideas that you may have could be frustrating, since like most writing courses, trying to develop an idea for a paper can be rather painstaking. Also, as long as youre not a "deadhead" during early scheduled classes and are able to pay close attention, as with other profs, you'll be just fine. Enjoy. Honestly.

Dr. Vernooy-Epp is nice and sweet and very easy to get along with. Not sure about her class though. Seemed to me that class never even started until 15 or 20 minutes after the hour because she was always handing something out or going over something irrelevant and that left about half an hour to discuss a major writer, and that would be it. Also, she gave us three exams for the semester, including the final, and dropped the lowest grade. That was nice, but after getting an "A" average on the first two, I had no incentive to take the third one and did not read a single assignment after that. But I'm not complaining.

Ok, so i heard she was really cool and always brought food to class and cancelled a lot and was fun and always happy. Well i guess its a lot different when you have her 8 in the morning... shes not that great. She gave us 3 papers. They were about dumb things but you could still write about them. There was so much BS work it wasnt even funny. There are like 1000 points for the class and it was ridiculous. She takes everthing so seriosuly and makes it no fun. but school isnt fun anyway... Take her if you want a stingy prof but my advice would be to stay away!

shes one of those people who get you really mad, but who you cant really stay mad at or feel good about being mad at because shes so damn nice... i thought her class was alot of bullsh*t highschool busy work and i hated the topic of all the papers...i think theme classes need to go... who wants to write about american politics all semester... i didnt like her grading, i thought she looked too much into procedure and didnt look into the writing style and quality of the work... i would not recommend her to someone who doesnt need thier hand held the entire way through the writng process...

As a new professor, Vernooy-Epp's style was a little awkward, and took a little getting used to. She's a moderate grader, and she assigned only one paper. The real scam lies within the midterm and final: Not only does she hand out a cheat sheet (containing a pool of items that will appear on the test) but allows the students to bring in a one-sided piece of paper with the answers on it. make sure your cheat sheet is air-tight before entering the exam, and you'll be fine. Several of my classmates reported that she ditched them during appointments, and she accused two people in my class of plagarism, one of whom was not guilty. Other than that, I have nothing negative to say.
