Dr. Girard wants specific details, meaning you'll have to study and know the material - and pay some attention in class. When he's in his office (usually not much outside of his office hours), he's always more than willing to help with any questions you have, even 15 minutes before the exam. He's also a lot of fun to talk about games or any other kind of bs with. He'll probably be one of the most open professors to talking to you about his own college experiences while you hang out studying outside his office.

He's a great guy and he teaches the class well, his tests can be hard because he expects very specific information. I actually did better on Mooney's tests then on Girard's. The guy tends to be late for class a lot because of his family, but he makes up for it by explaining the material in a clear concise manner. I didn't have to hit up the internet or the book as often to clarify the material because he explained it very well. A great guy to take if you're don't seem to get computer science as easily as others, but be warned... study for his tests, questions that seem easy can really trip you up at times.

Class was pretty solid. The professor has a decent personality, but he is more likely to take interest in your progress if you show interest in the class.

Dr. Girard is a very good teacher because he expects you to learn and reason without him spoon feeding you like a baby, but is also a personable friendly guy. He lectures....so do all teachers. His lectures aren't bad and if you listen and answer questions you will do well on the labs and quizzes and tests. He gives out labs to help you learn the material as well as help you understand how to use it in the language which you are learning. You can approach him with all ?'s. He expects you to learn and reason with the code because in college you aren't spoon fed the material. He gives out two tests and two quizzes. He is a great professor and I believe one of the best in the computer science department.

Dr.Girard is a very nice teacher and understands everything he talks about. His programs that are assigned are hard, but his easy tests and quizes make up for them. He tends to lecture a little more than most teachers but overall its an easy class.

You only have two tests and a final paper...the tests arent worth as much as the labs. I got a C on my two tests and and I still ended up with a B+

I liked this class fairly well. you get to work in groups the whole time, and the tests are generally pretty easy. There are only a few homeworks and most everything you do is done in class. Lectures can be a little boring but it's a good class. I'd recommend this guy, he is very understanding

Dr. Girard was a good but VERY easy prof. I am not a computer minded person, but I could understand and do well in this class. There is hardly any homework, he tells you exactly what to do for the in class projects (that are not collected or graded) and gives you a study guide for both tests. If you need help he is VERY willing to do whatever he can. This class was easy and I would definitely take Dr. Girard again!!!!

He was a good teacher... the homework is really easy and the tests weren't hard either. He gives you a study guide for them and as long as you put in a little work you will do really well

Confusing as hell. Doesnt teach from the book...uses his own examples instead. This gets annoying when his examples and his teaching ability combined help you learn nothing. Reading the book and getting help from other students taught me more. The book has even pretty much said his teachings were wrong and its the same book he told us to buy for the class. Hes a very nice guy but not good at teaching.

I had no idea what the heck I was getting into with this class. Every time I left the class I was more confused. Everyone played on the computer throughout every class lecture....had to teach myself EVERYTHINGGGGGG. After I taught myself straight out of the book I did OK on the quizzes, but if you know nothing about computer science I would suggest taking someone else because Dudley was a little over my head. He's always "sick" too...probably from his wife or daughter.

Coming into college I was glad that my major was Computer Science...thought it would give me a job right after I graduate...I went to the class and didnt think it was going to be bad..but after a couple of days he doesnt teach you anything...the way he explains programming things is ridiculous..you don't learn anything...he just posts the labs up and the rest is up to you to figure it out and write it up...sometimes he would try to teach us something but he loses his voice and just uses powerpoint and doesn't talk the whole period and laughs about it...he thinks that the student already knows how to program and thinks that everyone should know how to do everything...this results in him being a hard grader...this class totally made me wanna change my major although I ended up getting a C+...the class average was a 59 on one of our tests and I think overall the class average was in the 60s...whenever he does lecture its the most boring thing ever...please take my word for it don't pick him as a professor..him and the class blows!!! Freaking made me wanna change my major.

...because you won't learn much here. Girard's a nice guy, but the teaching leaves a bit to be desired. I can guarantee you the only reason I got an A is because I had previous programming experience and a few friends in CS 2. As we speak, I'm wrapping up a lab with help from a CS 2 friend, because Girard never taught us what we needed to know to efficiently do the lab. If you already know how to program and have a few friends that already know what you're supposed to be learning, the class is fairly easy, especially since he doesn't grade attendence if it's just a work-on-lab day.

WTF? This class is hard enough already and Dudley Girard doesnt make it any easier. The whole time I was completely lost and if you have little experience with Java or computer programing then you're SCREWED! Girard expects you to know how to program already and it always seems like this class is too easy for him to teach...but he never gets a clear point across! I just sit in class and play games on the computer because what he says is all gibberish...literally over 1/2 the class dropped this guy. If you think you know computers, think again. This class really isnt computer science...it should be renamed "Who Gives a Sh*t 'Bout Java?" It wont make you any smarter if you can pass it and you wont gain much knowledge of computers afterwards anyways. My advice...do not take Girard.

13 of 38 students found this review helpful.

Oh Dr. Girard. I had Dr. Girard spring '08 for 'Data structures and algorithms'. The book was nice and the patterns were very easy to learn by yourself. It took me about 3 days to read through the book and have a good understanding on how each one worked. However, the prof for some patterns seemed to have a foggy understanding of the true use or how to properly use them. His examples on the last 'harder' patterns were horrible because most of his teaching and assignment was not on the pattern but on other horribly explained things. The idea to mash the first 8 or so patterns into one program was a bad idea, he should've followed the book so the other students could differentiate the clear differences for each pattern instead of the confusion the other ones seemed to be having. Another thing he should've done was go more in depth on good/bad situations to use certain patterns, and also teach the students about discipline for pattern use because they tended to use it in excess for the final project. The final project was to use so many patterns you learned to build something... This wasn't hard if you knew what sort of things used a lot of patterns effectively but for the other students in the class their projects were basically a program that truly only needed 2 patterns but he had them squish more in there, clouding their code and making the overall development of the programs horrible, and it really showed them some bad habits with patterns. Basically he did teach it for what I would expect of an average professor but my comment is neutral because this class could've really been taught much better, and I know if his personal life with his family wasn't so involving he would be a much better prof at Ship.

While a friendly and personable guy, he's just a mediocre lecturer and a bit of a slacker to boot. The website of the book we used has PowerPoint slides summarizing all the chapters of the book. He took these slides, rearranged them a bit, and basically read them off during each class. He did, however, know what he was talking about. Ask him any question, and he'll provide an intelligent answer. His tests are very difficult, but not in an unfair way. Study and you'll do alright. The labs he gives can be difficult as well, but you learn a lot from them. Overall, he's alright, but doesn't really make an impression on you.
