Dr.O's class is a lot of work. She gives like 6 tests and has a HUGE child study due at the end of the semester, BUT the class isn't as terrible as everyone says. The tests are EXTREMELY easy! I got an A on all of them and barely studied. If you do the reviews she gives you WILL get at least a B because she puts the exact same questions from the review on the test! There is a lot of work, but I also heard the other professor gives as much and it isn't as easy to get an A. Just be prepared, you WILL get annoyed by her, and she is sometimes hard to understand, but if you are going to be a teacher you will have to deal with people you don't like! Hope this helps :)

She is completely unorganized. You will not know when anything is due. If you at least put effort into the projects and study for tests, you will get a good grade. I totally bombed the first test and maybe got B's on the others, but I did well on the projects. You're gonna hate your life with her, but your patience pays off

As soon as people hear a strong accent, they begin to find as many negative aspects of a person as possible. Hence, all the negative feedback from various students. If you are one to get past it, then you will be fine. She is a great professor and I learned a lot from her class. She is unlike some professors with whom you can easily get by the class without putting forth effort. You have to work and from this you learn. You are in college now and you cannot expect things to be easy anymore. If you are willing to be an adult who is willing to learn and be unbiased, then you will be okay. People just want things to be so easy; how will you learn if this is always the case? Also, when in college it is expected that part of your learning is independent- you seek more information- like when doing research and writing a paper. The books provided in class may not be completely used by the professor, but it is now your book, so you can read more if you like. Professors are not like secondary, elementary, and early childhood teachers- they don't hold your hand through it all. You are expected to be more independent; she expects the same. I recommend taking her, but of course, the negative is always easier to believe than the positive. You do the math and Good luck!

I think this is the most misunderstood (literally and figuratively) professor at Ship. Her accent drives 1/2 the students insane. For those who got dropped off from a town as "diverse" as Shippensburg who have never interacted with someone that looks or sounds different from them, ODHIAMBO becomes their worst nightmare. All elementary Ed girls (call me sexist, but how many el.ed guys were in your class?) accustomed to speaking and learning in motheresque language, watch out. Odhiambo will never sound like you or your elem. ed teachers did. There is enough material in Elements of Ed. for 2 semesters, so the amount of work is unreal. WATCH OUT FOR THE PACKET SHE HANDS YOU THE 1ST DAY OF CLASS. I never got that many photocopies EVER in another class. Don't get on her bad side, don't bark at her in class (I saw this more than once. STUDENTS loved to get on her face right in the middle of a class) NOT GOOD. Take a deep breath, ask for clarifications outside of class, or see who else understood in your class and ask him/her. REMEMBER...america is full of minorities, so Odhiambo is your intro to dealing with people from other backgrounds (be it your students, their parents, colleages or SUPERVISORS). Good luck and keep an open mind.

I didnt think that dr. o was as bad of a prof as everyone says she is. Yeah she takes points off of assignments if you dont follow the rubric to a "t" but thats what rubrics are for, right? She's prepared for her lessons, she just isnt sure how to use powerpoint. She cares about her students and is very helpful when you go to her office with a question. She's not a bad prof, she just knows what she wants and expects her students to give it to her. Her bark is definatly bigger than her bite. I would take her again anyday.

If you're the person reading all of the other comments and saying to yourself 'man, people are just so mean... I'm going to give the woman a chance.' That was me.. and I'm here to tell you that that's a silly thought and that most likely you are wrong. So take the advice and run. No, it's not absolutely horrible, but it is pretty awful. This class was THE most frustrating course I've taken at Ship.. and I'm sorry to say this, because really I do like Dr. O. as a person. Sometimes she comes across as a b*tch.. but she means well. However, the class sucks... there is absolutely no organization, it's a headache and a half and it's really not worth an entire paid for semester of your life. I don't know if I would have taken her even if it was free. Just take someone else if it's at all possible... get on the waiting list. You won't regret it.

Just don't. Wait for ANY other professor. She doesn't teach you anything, but expects you to know everything. She always keeps you after class is over and throws important information at the very end when everyone is already late for their next class. Shes hard to understand and shes not clear with directions that she gives you. You never know whats due and when. She gives you every single assignment the first day of class, no one ever knew what was going on. Absolutely awful. Just don't.

Grading: Professor Odhiambo doesn't grade easy on her reports, so you better be an incredible writer. She doesn't give you slack with presentations either, so you should come to her class with prior skills in presenting and teaching. Her tests are long and numerous and she doesn't tell you about them in advance. The only way to find out when anything is due is her syllabus, which she doesn’t strictly follow. Teaching: Her main form of teaching is lecturing and the lectures are long and boring. While she was explaining how this is the most superior form of teaching, I was fighting to stay awake. She’s also very unorganized. It takes forever for her to hand back our tests and assignments, if she hands them back at all. Communication: Professor Odhiambo rarely replies to emails, and when she does there is a long gap of time before you get a reply. She is always rushing off to a meeting after class so you can’t catch her then, and sometimes she says she’s unavailable during her office hours. She is also unpleasant to communicate with. She has left rude comments on my tests when I didn’t do well, and on more than one occasion said something extremely sarcastic and unfriendly to my face. I would call her unapproachable. Concluding: I am not the only one who suffered in her class. I’ve talked to many of the other students in the class and all of them said they weren’t doing well. Many of them said they were normally ‘A’ students, but would be lucky to get a ‘C’ in this class. All in all, avoid this professor like the plague.

Oh . . . my . . . God. I have never had a more disorganized teacher in my entire life. How did she even get tenure?!?!?! She rarely gets to class on time and when she gets there, she spends about 5 more minutes getting ready for the lesson! Now, that didn't bother me as much as the rest of her class. This woman is the BIGGEST HYPOCRITE I have EVER encountered in my entire life! She lectures on how to properly teach students in the classroom, but she doesn't even consider using what she teaches! If she did, she wouldn't just stand up and lecture EVERYDAY and use power points that came from the textbook so that she didn't have to do any work. I have to admit, I got a lot of doodling time in with this class. She sends around a sign up sheet that has your names on it and then you sign your initials for whatever days you were there. However, she doesn't do it every class period. So if you missed, you could still just sign off on that day and say you were there. Her tests are EXTREMELY ambiguous and are so much harder than she makes them out to be. I learned absolutely nothing in this class. Even people who read every chapter religiously barely got by with a C. RUN FROM HER CLASS WITH ALL OF YOUR GOD-GIVEN SPEED!

I don't know how the ed. psych classes are at ship, but everything in this class I had already learned at HACC in my ed. psych class. I never studied for the tests, and passed all of them. And as far as the assignments, they are not bad, but her grading is awful. She took off a point on the research paper, for the question not being there even though it clearly stated "our question is...", all because she didn't want to give an A. I had to question her about it, and she gave up and gave the point so we could get an A. She also bullies her students into not questioning her grading by saying that if you hand it back to her, she'll go through it again and grade it harder. You can't bully your college students into not questioning why they received what they did! You shouldn't do that to anyone. I don't know what she's like outside of class, but she is awful as a professor, and always late!

I got an A in the class...but I have no idea how. She grades incredibly inconsistently, she loses papers (and then says it's your fault), you never know what is due exactly or how she wants it exactly, she will tell you your opinions are wrong and take off points for them, and thats only the beginning. She's nice, but wow...I hope she doesn't get tenure!

I did get an A- in her class, so that should be a good thing, but I didn't even understand how I got it. I did well on the test, but bombed every written assignment there was. Not to beat a dead horse, but she graded on a whim, the tests had to be answered as if you were Dr. O taking the test, the Action-Research paper was so much work, but worthless. My partner did a lesson that was less than the minimum time and I was punished for it because I did not have enough comments about her lesson when there wasn't anything to comment on. It is a shame she is one of the people who teach what is an important class for an El Ed major. I would guess every semester she gets slammed on her evaluations, but SHIP doesn't seem to care that much either.

Do not take Dr. O. I took her bc everyone said if you follow the rubric you will be fine. True.. but you will never see rubrics like Dr. O's. These are not ordinary requirements on assignments. You think you understand what she wants, but believe me...you don't. She changes her mind all the time and contradicts the rubrics. This class was very stressful as most classes should be. But the last couple weeks of classes, Dr. O drove me insane. The action research paper is IMPOSSIBLE. Her rubric includes like 3 different formats and you won't know which to use. I spent close to 20 hours on this paper that was about 5-8 pages long... ridiculous. The beginning of the semester will seem fine but it will just get worse and worse. Save yourself the trouble and your sanity and take a better professor or wait until you can take a better professor.

Let me say she is a very nice person and I believe she does care about her students. She is unorganized and unprepared to teach...every day!!! The assignments aren't bad but the way she grades is awful. She will mark 4 points (or whatever amount) off throughout the project and then on the rubric you will have 8points off...doesn't add up. You will constantly be questioning her about grades and have to turn your stuff back in for her to look over her mistakes...then she will lose your stuff. I dreaded going to class! Ship got me good when they switched me to her class. Outside of class I like talking to her because she knows a lot but something happens when she enters a classroom. I truly believe much of the problem is in the english language, especially in regards to the tests. I hate writing all this neg. stuff but it is the truth...sorry freshmen but you will be the ones to be in her class...welcome to SHIP!!! The rest of us know better.

Stay away from her. Dr. Odhiambo has to be the worst prof at Shippensburg. Every test there are at least 5-10 questions that she has incorrect. You either can't understand the question or she has the wrong answer marked down. She never explains anything clearly and you have to ask her 100 questions in order to understand the assignment she is giving. She enjoys taking points off for no reason at all with no explanation. My advice is to stay far away.

Worst Professor ever. First she lacks an understanding of the english language, so on tests there are 3 possible correct answers, you have to pick the answer that you think she will choose. The whole class will do bad on the test and she does not care. Completely unorganized, loses papers that students turn in, has ridiculous assignments that do not make any sense. Avoid her at all costs. Absolutely horrible teacher

At first, she was decent, thought it wouldnt be as bad as people say but NO I was wrong. She is horrible and just doenst have a clue. I dont think she knows what she is doing and doesnt have a fair grading system and good luck with her tests. Be prepared to fight every answer with her bc she doenst know how to write effectively in english.

As far as personality goes I do not wish to bash Odihiambo, however when it comes to teaching and my education I feel as though she has failed me horribly. She is a very intelligent woman but she lacks many of the important attributes that a teacher (particularly a prof. who instructs students on how to become good teachers) should have. For example organization, meaningful and understandable lessons, a fair and consistent grading system, accessibility, and I hate to go out on a limb here but what about feeling and compassion (she exhibits none of these qualities.) You should only teach what you know and I don't think that Dr. O has a clue. She should worry less about busy work and unnecessary projects and more about her students and their progress. Do yourself a favor and take anyone else but her!

This is honestly the worst professor I have had here at Ship. She is supposed to teach the students how to be a good teacher, but yet she does the opposite. You don't learn anything from her pointless lessons! She thinks that by giving you handouts on the chapter it is considered teaching. Odhiambo is not always there for her office hours so don't wait around, the teaching department does not even have a home phone number on her. If you write her an email it might take about a week for her to get back to you. I am very disappointed in her disorganization and lack of teaching. The first day she hands you all of these packets that she hard'y explains. I got stuck with her for two classes this semester....Please save yourself and DO NOT TAKE HER! Please take Dr. Hoover or Dr. Morin

I took her Ed. Psych. class over the summer, and I feel like I didn't get much out of it. I basically learned the material needed for the tests and then went and taught myself more thoroughly out of the book later. Her requirements for a 4-week summer class were quite extensive, including 3 hours of observation time in a school (in the summer...come on now!), and two papers on it. I came out of the class with a decent grade, so I can't complain about that. I'm sure some people did though, considering she considers a solid "A" to be anything 94% and higher as opposed to Ship's standards. She's nice enough as a person, but the teaching leaves a lot to be desired.

Odhiambo is still unorganized, but from what I have heard she has gotten better from last semester. She rambles on during her lectures, but even if you space out you'll still do ok. She is a very nice prof. Her tests are very resonable as long as you have studied. Take her only if you have patience.
