I have taken a lot of classes with this professor, and I do not know any other ship teacher who is more passionate about the subject or willing to help if you try. Maybe BOC students get back what they put in, and the so-called "Honorz" (duh) whiners should realize that you read books to LEARN not to take tests.

This lady is wonderful... She is very easy to work with, and she doesn't ask for too much. So if you have her as a professor you're in good hands. Just don't try to screw her over... She is the GREATEST AT SHIP!!!!!!!!!

She's down to earth. If you do all the work required, you can't do poorly. Laskowski will definitely work with you on anything and will help you with an assignment you don't understand. She's a good choice for a required class... I highly recommend her for any speech/comm class, especially BOC.

Kara was a good prof whose classes were bearable most of the time. Her lectures were powerpoints but she also let us watch movies sometimes so it wasn't that bad. She grades easier on the papers you do, (about 1 a week in the beginning of the semester), than she does on the speeches. She has A LOT of requirements and there are time limits which she is strict about, but if you practice your speeches, know your subject, and are a fairly good public speaker you should do okay. You do practice short speeches in class before the big ones which probably helped some of the people who do get nervous. The only thing I can say that I really didn't enjoy was the 10 page paper. Though we didn't have any tests or finals because of it so at least it balances. Overall, she is a pretty good prof and very nice and I would recommend her.

Sure she may have shared her political views a little too freely in class but I respect the way she treats us like college students, not babies. She doesn't give you much feedback on your speeches so you wonder why you got the grade you did, but I found the examples of communication theories in class to be very interesting. If you ask she's willing to look over your speech/paper before presenting it and she's actually a pretty cool person. We did 2 speeches, a symposium, and a paper and that was it. I wouldn't say easy but not hard either. I recommend taking her class.

Ok so here is the story, she is an awesome prof. She gives great notes and the tests are usually straight from them. If you prepare your speeches the correct way and the outline that goes along with the speeches you'll do fine. She grades very fairly, if you don't try, you'll fail, if you try you'll do fine. Plus, she is like the only prof. on campus that is cool as hell, when else would we be able to watch John Stewart video clips? Take her!

Ms. Laskowski was a very good professor. She has a way of connecting with her students. She uses examples that are easy to understand. There were 2 speeches, 1 group speech, 1 paper, and 2 tests; not too bad. Do your work and know the material she covers and you will do fine.

Kara as she will ask you to call her, is a great prof. She expects you to show up and put forth an effort. She does impomtu speaking but its fun and she requires 2 speaches, a midterm, a group project, and then a final test on the last day of class, not during finals week. I would recommend that you take her if you have a chance she is understanding and will help you when she can. GREAT CLASS! She is one of the best profs here.

This was her first year teaching but I must say I really enjoyed this class....Nobody ever likes to take speech classes but with Kara she was laid back and didn't really mind you speaking your mind. You do a lot of really fun activities to help you get used to the class....you have 3 speeches( so easy ) and you have a 2 exams...which aren't too bad if you study. Not many notes and all around this class was fun sometimes a little slow but other than that I would really recommend Laskowski....

Definitely take her if you can! She's really nice and her tests are all multiple choice and fairly easy. She also gives short answer bonus opportunities for her tests. I liked her a lot, she was very laid back and friendly. She also gave good examples in class and there was hardly ever homework assignments. We didn't even open the text book once in her class. She always gave great notes. Take her, she's really cool.

What a horrible professor. DO NOT EVER TAKE HER unless you love to be confused the entire class. She requires you to read a chapter each week yet she NEVER GOES over the chapter. Thanks?? and then for the midterm expects you to have an exam on all the chapters 1-8 and expect you to remember EVERYTHING when she does not even help you with the terms or anything in the chapter. Basically, there are two exams, one speech, and two papers. Not bad right? You may think that but it is a lot of work. Each week must type a page summary on the chapter- which can rack up some easy points so not bad. She is very very very unorganized and there is not set thing you do each class so you never know WHAT IS GOING ON!!! Grades okay...but have two long ridiculous papers ( WHICH SHE BARELY GOES OVER WITH THE CLASS). Do not take her. She is HORRIBLE I can't even believe she is a 10-year...like what??

Subject: She doesn't Care about Teaching  (Jan 18 2010, 11:57PM)
Student: Anonymous (Human Communication Studies)
Class:Research Methods (--)
12 of 37 students found this review helpful.

In my entire time at Shippensburg University, Kara Laskowski has been the most disappointing professor I've ever taken for a class. As an HCS major, it was quite disheartening to have her (the HCS department chair) show up to class the first day and tell us that "You had all better be quiet because I'm irritated and don't want to be here." From these first words (and the subsequent nonverbal accoutrement), she proceeded to read from her notes, read off of poorly prepared Powerpoint slides, and practically BORE herself to sleep every single class. For someone with a doctorate in communication, she is not very effective. Her lack of interest in her own area of expertise was very difficult to work with, considering Research Methods is one of the capstone courses of our discipline. The class is intended to prepare students for their senior research projects, but I confess she did nothing to prepare me. I read the book, but it was highly technical and very difficult to understand. She did not respond to emails or requests for help, and quite frankly she didn't appear to care about the class. I do hope that she improves for future students who come through the HCS tract at Ship. I wouldn't discourage people from taking her, but know going into the class that she may not appear interested in the subject matter, she isn't terribly interested in those in her class, and be prepared for the constant comparisons between Ship and Penn State, as she did some of her studies there and feels it is obviously superior.

This prof seemed very uninterested in this course and her students. She had us read from the text but rarely mentioned it and there were no tests so reading it seemed pointless. What she wanted from us for the assignments was never clear and asking her to be more specific didn't help. She often gave the impression that the assignments were no big deal and then graded much harder than one would expect. There was no consistency in her grading.

this prof. had the most boring class I've ever taken. She was awful at lecturing and made it very hard to take understandable notes. There were no tests so all material seemed useless. She grades somewhat subjectively and has very high standards without telling you what she expects beforehand. All in all, steer clear unless you love learning useless information.

Wow.....her grading system is a joke; that is even if she has one. Recieved a 0% for my assignment, I questioned her reasoning for this and she said that I failed to meet ONE of the requirements....(Forgot a oral citation) So becasue of this one mistake out of my entire presentation I recieved a ZERO. Bullsh*t if you ask me

Does not allow you to miss any classes, yet doesn't have a problem taking off herself. She picks favorites, and everybody else is basically screwed as far as grades go. My classmates would tell me how good of a job I had done after a speech, then I would get a C from her. When you go to meet her to find out what you need to improve on, or ask why you go a C she will stumble around trying to find something. IF YOU GIVE A BAD GRADE YOU NEED TO TELL THE STUDENT WHAT THEY DID WRONG!

The class was not very structured. We had a book but she refered to it very rarely. She rambled on and on in class and it wasn't very organized. It was very difficult to take notes on her lectures. She expressed her political values frequently in class which I did not appreciate since many of the class presentations were political in nature. I got the impression that she did not like what she teached and she was very rude by occasionally bringing her children to class and not having an acceptable lecture prepared. The class is not very hard but I did not enjoy it at all.

Subject: Why does she still have a job here?  (Jan 24 2005, 03:02PM)

Class:Honors BOC (B)
12 of 37 students found this review helpful.

In the 15 weeks of BOC, *Honors* Boc, by the way, she actually taught for about 3 hours. She gets the students in the class to pick a subject, and be the one who teaches it for that day. Which is ok, but I am paying for a qualified person to teach me so I can learn, not some kid who knows only what a textbooks tells them. She's also very unreliable... we had to put on an honor's symposium, and the day before, decided to tell us that she hadn't done half of the things that she promised she would take care of. So we spent the next 24 hours running around like chickens with our heads cut off doing everything that she said she would do, but did not. Overall, the workload is not that bad, if you can handle paying money to not learn anything, and have a poor grade reflect on how she failed you as a professor.

I disagree with the others that rated Kara. I believe she was harsh with grading the speeches compared to what I heard about other professors. She seemed uninterested in teaching the class and was way too serious. Her "humor" was dry. I did not enjoy her class.

Kara is one of those teachers that most students hate... I'll be honest with you I didn't like her most of the semester. Shes a stickler in the classroom, but really friendly in Office Hours. She gives you 4 massively hard exams through blackboard, you will fail them. The class average on every exam ranged from 50-65%. However you also have 4 speeches, in which everyone gets 80-90%. Every time I had a speech I got an 84%. She also assigns you to this hard to explain community project. SO I really dont know how to rate her. I got B's on all the speeches, failed every test, and got an A on the final... I was all over the place and somehow ended up with a B-, the one positive thing I can say is that I am 100% more confident speaking in front of groups of people and for presentations in other classes I'm in tip-top shape. In that regard Kara is adequate. If you take her, don't expect an A, no one gets them, but you will be able to speak in public!
