Subject: Really Not Bad  (May 02 2008, 04:48PM)

A majority of the comments--mostly negative--indicate that Dr. Borrell is the biggest ass in the Comm/Journ Department, but he's not that bad at all. His class was like a breath of fresh air--I learned more about radio production than I did doing my local radio show at the college station. He cares about students and their interests, and is willing to do anything for those who desire to succeed. Study your brains out for the final exam and work your tail off for the semester project; both are big chunks of your final grade. Really nice guy--wish I could have had him for more classes. He's an amazing man with extraordinary talent and an awkward sense of humor.

Subject: You'll Learn a Lot  (Oct 05 2006, 12:24AM)

Dr. Borrell is definitely not the easiest professor in the Comm/Journ department, but he certainly is effective. Through the use of case studies and a LOT of helpful, descriptive PowerPoint slides, Dr. Borrell was able to help students learn about the world of electronic media management. He also provided us with the questions that would be on the final exam well before we actually took the test, and I know for a fact that this helped multiple students succeed. I highly recommend Dr. Borrell to anyone who wants to get great preparation for life after graduation.

Dr. Borrell is a nice guy, he keeps the class interesting. He can be blunt at times, but you need it, you know, you can't get everything sugarcoated for you. The assignments aren't too bad, if you know what you're doing, and you put forth some creativity, you should be okay. Also, if you get one or two less than stellar grades, you can easily rebound - I got a 55 and a 66 and still got a B-. You get eight assignments and two tests. Everybody always goes on about how hard he is but he isn't that bad... I don't know about you but I'd rather write an advertisement for campus dining than study about how many enzymes in glucose or whatever.

Subject: Tough, but Good  (Dec 01 2005, 12:41PM)
Student: Shipwrecked Raider (Communications/Journalism)
Class:Writing for Broadcast Media (A)
12 of 37 students found this review helpful.

Dr. Borrell is not an easy professor. You'll have to work to get a good grade. He is however very effective in teaching students to become good writers. He takes off points when necessary and has little tolerance for late work, but if you pay attention and do the assignments correctly, it won't be too bad. He also provides helpful study guides for each exam. Overall, class isn't a piece of cake, but you'll leave a lot more prepared for a career in the business.

The class wasn't too bad, kinda boring, but bearable. He makes you talk a lot in class, which I didn't like too much, but it's good if you're gonna work in Broadcast Media. He's a tough grader, but if you hand in everything and put some effort into each project, you'll get a B. You have to put forth a lot of effort if you want an A. His tests are pretty easy, so that's a plus. I'd say take him, he's really not that bad.

Dr. Borrell is not a bad teacher. He flat out tells you what he expects. He helps you because he treats his class like a real job: no late assignments, no misspellings...His tests aren't bad if you study and he gives the short answer/essay before the test...He knows his stuff and I really feel I learned a lot from the guy...I would recommend to take him if you want to get something out of college

As long as you follow what he tells you in class, you will do just fine. Do not make stupid errors on projects, the smallest thing wrong can cost you a lot of points. He DOES NOT tolerate late work AT ALL. He will not accept work that is even a few SECONDS late. If you think I am kidding, ask other people who have had him. He does not pull anything funny on tests either, he is very fair when it comes to test time. Over all the content of the class WILL BE used in the future if you have a career in journalism.

He wants everyone to do well in class, he can be a tough grader. He wants everyone to get a feel for what it will be like in the real broadcasting world. If you tend to hand things in late, DO NOT TAKE this class. Dr. Borrell does not tolerate late work even by a few seconds, no lie. I would recommend taking Dr. Borrell, he has aught me a lot.

Borrell is a really nice guy but his classes are pretty boring. Laugh at his jokes, even though many of them are lame. Hard grader on projects but he just wants you to do well in the future. Ask for help and show you are trying. HE DOES NOT TOLERATE LATE PROJECTS!!! He will not accept anything that is passed in that is even the littlest bit late (even a minute). Again he is a good guy and just wants everybody to learn how it's going to be in the REAL broadcast world.

This professor is never around when you need him. If you ask him about help on an assignment, he will give you absolutely no advice. Never email him because he will ignore it. He also does not give out any guideline papers describing what to do on projects. You says it once and if you miss info, you're screwed. I STRONGLY recommend to avoid this professor.

12 of 37 students found this review helpful.

Borell was the worst professor I had at Ship. His portion of the class was a complete waste of time. Nothing I "learned" in his class was helpful. He basically told me that I was never going to find a job because I wasn't right for the field (he really only knows about radio anyway, NOT PR). Contrary to his belief, I began my career on May 31 (I was a May grad). He's a piece of crap. Take him if you must, but keep your mouth shut and whatever you do, DO NOT disagree with him because that's what your grade is based on, rather than hard work and grades.

Everyone told me to take capstone with Sipes and Carlin. Instead, I took it with Sipes and Borrell. Big mistake. His portion of the class is nothing more than busywork and he gets pissed when the current state of radio is discussed (but, he doesn't mind saying newspapers are dying and we'll never find jobs). Absolutely horrible and a waste of money. Avoid.

OK. Who could possibly have anything good to say about him. Oh wait, the students who are part of the radio station. He plays favorites like you wouldn't believe. If you aren't part of radio, don't plan on a good grade. He is subhuman. If you don't agree with his extreme political views you are screwed. Not a good prof or person in general. DO NOT TAKE HIM unless you are completely willing to kiss his ass and not say a word in his class besides to tell him how great you think he is ( which he isn't).

Borrell knows his stuff. He's been around the block a few times and is very knowledgeable in his field. If you pay attention in class and put some effort into his assignments, you will learn a whole lot, although unless you plan on going into radio or TV this class is pretty much useless. What he seems to lack is what they call "duh social skillz". He doesn't know how to discriminate between being a total prick and just letting sh*t slide. Just don't ever piss him off and you're golden. How do you know you've pissed him off? Well, he grits his teeth and shakes a little bit in this motion that sort of resembles the "robot".

Dr. Borrell can be a nice guy, but as a professor it is a horrible experience. He is a VERY inconsistant grader, especially with case studies (in Electronic Media Management). However, if you are a favorite you will pass with no problem. Plus for his tests, he probably randomnly opens the book and chooses a sentence he thinks looks good, and puts that on the test. The true and false sections are extremely difficult. You just never know WHAT to expect with his tests. Just try and get another professor, if you have the chance.

This guy is very knowledgeable, no kidding yourself there, but he is the most closed minded professor at Shippensburg. He is so stubborn and does not accept others ideas. He looks at you creepy during conversation and class discussions. He grades inconsistently on how he feels about you at the time. Once his opinion is formed about you he grades you accordingly so. Take this guy if you wanna keep yourself guessing on where you stand in class because he gives you no idea! He does show a couple cool videos.

[] He is knowledgable in Broadcasting, but he is without a doubt a huge prick. If he doesn't like you, you're done. Do not even think about putting your head down in his class, he will pull you aside and tell you are not "college material". Also make sure you sign the sign in sheet. The only reason I recieved the grade I did was because I missed the sign in sheet not the class. I even had notes from the days I soposedly skipped. Don't take him if you don't have to. He grades hard, he is boring and not funny at all.

Youre good to go if you have no personality and show up. He tells you exactly what he wants. But dont be late. If you hand in an assignment 1 minute late there will be hell to pay. He has no understanding of human operations. This guy lives in another dimension. He wrote me up to the dean for sleeping, threatened to kick me out of the major for reading a newspaper and told me I had serious problems. Words of wisdom: sit down and shut up.

not too bad if you have a good foot hold the first day. don;t get on his bad side. also you can have 2 droped grades and the final counts as one of these if you like so don't use it. he is pretty harsh but if you show up everyday and do ALL the work he isn't the spawn of Satan or anything.

Don't be fooled, this guy is pretty easy and he tells you exactly what are on his tests. He is just an inconsistant grader and a prick. I should know, I took him for four classes. Broadcasting in America, Broadcast Advertising and Sales, and Broadcast Management and Regulation, Writing Broadcasting Media. But don't get me wrong, If you have a choice between him and Dr. Carlin. Take Dr. Carlin, you only be doing yourself a favor. Borrell isn't hard but he is a prick and boring as hell and he thinks his jokes are funny.

This professor is not hard and he is not easy. If you do the work and hand it in on time than anyone can do just fine. In reference to the other listings I highly doubt more than 10% of the people taking broadcast writting will use anything they learn beyond that class.
