I think the negative comments about Prof. Gibbs stem from the fact that those individuals never had a prof. that really cared. Gibbs was awesome in my opinion, I had her my first semester @ Ship and learned more in her class than I did in all of my previous schooling. When it comes down to it, yeah she does grade a bit challenging but I would rather take her than a sh*tty easy prof. 'cause College Writing is pretty important, and you really need/will utilize the skills she teaches you throughout college. You will be writing papers for 4+ years of your life--so you mine as well be taught the right way. Taking her isn't the end of the world, but it certaintly isn't one of those GPA raising courses!

Mrs. Gibbs is a very nice lady. She grades really hard. I took everyone of my papers to the learning center 2 to 3 times before I turned in my paper. I still got a C. I recommend not to take her because I haven't been taught anything from her.

Mrs. Gibbs.. where to begin, the first 3 weeks of class are mainly grammar review. Topped off with pop quizzes about everything from the syllabus, every chapter (which you may have more than one for the next class), every handout, and vocabulary... her papers are ridiculous! I seriously write them the night before, because if you put any effort into it she takes more points off.. your best bet is to appear stupid at first. Mrs. Gibbs has unreal favoritism for football players. if you're looking to learn something about writing, cant stand busywork and have a tendency to miss any classes (she takes 15 pts off each day u miss) - avoid her like the plague!

I was supposed to have professor Ruth but instead we ended up with profesor Gibbs. She teaches like you are in elementary school. She likes to teach a lot of grammer. She doesn't give out a whole lot of assignments though. She doesn't have any scheduled classes of her own to sign up for so I guess it's just the luck of the draw when it comes to getting this prof.

Prof. Gibbs came into our class because Dr. Mao took a semester off and is the most awful prof. I have ever had. Her required work is ridiculous. In one week we had a 3-4 page paper due, a test, and a 8-12 page rough draft due and she grades rough drafts. She takes off a absurd amount of points if you just miss a comma or have a run-on sentence in your paper. Stay away from her if you can. She came into this class as a substitute and you would think she would be a little considerate considering we didn't even pick her as a prof. We all wanted Mao.

My biggest hang up with Marcia stems from her inexperience teaching college-level classes. This felt like high school to me: she tells us not to eat or drink anything, we're given busy work (make an outline of three chapters, 100pages, that she later gave us her own, typed version of), pointless quizzes, these "journals" that, yes, made me organized but were essentially worthless and etc. i expected to be graded on my writing of papers, not pointless BS. teaching method: lecture for 75 minutes doing nothing more than reading to us from either our books or from a handout that we were given at the beginning of class. oh well. i suggest you steer clear of this teacher.

Subject: mother says?  (Feb 29 2004, 06:10PM)

This lady was forced into my college writing class because Dr. Kalmey was forced to retire due to his health. We had already started to read and do the assignments that he had for us, she completely revamped the syllabus, which annoyed me to no end. We bought all of those books for nothing, she didn't even try to use them. Even though we missed two and a half weeks of the course Prof Gibbs still insisted that we cram an entire semesters worth of work into the remaining time. Because she was short on time, she tried to cram grammar at us all in one sitting and expect us to be the next editors of protious or whatever the magazine is called. We had to do four papers in no time flat. She gave us like a week to do a research paper. When we asked why it couldn't be postponed and have the brainstorming for the next paper due on the same day, she said "because mother says." Lady you aint my mom, my mother listens to reason. She grades really rough too. If you miss a comma she deducts 5 points. If you miss another comma you are at a -10 already. I ended up refering to her as the english nazi from hell by the end of the semester. Sometimes she would have confrences with you on your papers, sometimes not. If she did have the confrence, don't even bother trying to get more than your 10-15 mins. out of her. However in all fairness to her, she was forced to come in and try to pick up where someone else left off. Maybe if we had the time of a full semester things wouldn't have been so rushed or so cramed. Maybe she would have been a better teacher, if she only had the time. I don't know, but I do know I will never take her again.
