Marti was the coolest professor I've ever had at any level of education. She treated all of her students like they were her friends and never thought she was better than anyone. Her classes were easy, and the material was extremely interesting. I learned so much from her in her short-time at Ship. She's gone now, but I hope to see her again someday. This campus isn't the same without you Marti.

Marti is the best prof I have ever had in my entire life. She knows her stuff and teaches you in a way that you have no choice but to learn the material, She is so open about her life and it really helps understand the concepts when she gives examples that we can relate to. She is a stickler for attendance but who wants to miss one of her classes???? NOONE THATS WHO! Too bad she is gone now! she is ABD (all but dissertation!) or as she says, all but dead.

Dr Marti is the best professor I have had so far. She makes class so fun and really cares about what she is teaching. She is also very good at teaching and making the subjects interesting. She also knows if you are shy (like me) and wont make you do anything in front of class. I highly recommend her!

Marti is undoubtedly THE BEST professor that I have had. She is so energetic, and she really relates to every single one of her students. She is the reason I am minoring in Sociology. Marti teaches you the concepts of sociology through experience and life examples. Half the time, you don't even realize you are actually learning something. It is amazing how much you apply her examples in the real world. I will never forget the things I learned from Marti. It really was an awesome opportunity(yes, an opportunity!) to take her for two classes. I only wish that she would have taught more courses because I would definitely take her again. What an amazing prof!!!

Marti is the best prof i have ever had at ship. her classes are great. she makes me want to go to class even when im hungover, sick and still puking in the morning. Her classes are easy and you remember most everything by her stories she relates the ideas to. she only has a midterm and a final but basically tells you what is going to be on them and the questions are explained like you are in elementary school. She is great and ive learned a lot from her. take her if you can, shes only here one more semester~~~ SHIP---WHY ARE YOU GETTING RID OF HER!?!?!?!

Marti was an amazing professor. She came highly recommended from friends of mine who had her so I knew I had to get into her class. I did not regret it. You learn so much about human beings and their behaviors, and the subject matter is always interesting. You actually want to come to class. There are only two exams so you have to get good grades on them, but Marti gives a study guide ahead of time that has EVERYTHING that will be on the test. Overall a wonderful experience, and I'm taking her again for Contemporary Social Problems, even though I'm not a Soc major or minor.

Marti is by far the most interesting instructor I've ever had. She brought a lot of energy to class and always made class really enjoyable. She made the topics discussed in class relevant to life. No matter what your major is, she will really affect how you think and her stories aren't just entertaining, they're applicable to life. I highly recommend taking her. She is awesome, however the only grades you get in the course are the midterm, the final, and your participation, so you really have to do the reading and know your stuff or your test scores will be low and your overall score will be low. But seriously, take her if you can.

Marti is amazing! She relates to her students and makes every lecture fun. She really wants each person to do well and will do anything she can to help you out. Yes, there are only two tests, but if you show up to class they are easy, and 20% of your grade is based on attendance! You won't ever want to miss her class anyway, there are surprises around every corner!

Marti was/is always willing to help out her students. (Both in class and personal matters.) She is the most 'fo real instructor I've ever had. She applies what she knows, while taking it further than the textbook. Marti draws from real life experience, good, bad, and indifferent. I have nothing but the utmost respect for Marti, and I hope she gets tenure at SHIP. We need more understanding, liberal, and 'down to earth' professors. Not only did I learn something from Marti, she made me realize the value of edu-ma-cation, no matter how tacky, plain, or florescent the book may be. Marti is the ultimate leopard, punk rock princess. Thanks Marti!

Marti is the sh*t!!! i learned soo much from that class that i see every day but now i am able to classify them as what it is. being a freshman you dont know all the tricks of the trade....aka shipsearch; shipunderground.....Marti took me under her wing and told me how to do things and where to go and how to get out of different situations. there are only 3 bad things about her class. first the class is at 9 in the morning and as she says she is a NAZI about attendance (that means i remembered most of my Thirsty Thursdays) and number three she only has two tests....a mid-term and a final. so basically if you f*ck up on the first test you are screwed for the final....lucky for me i am a great student and i got a hardcore awesome grade on my test. if you have a chance take marti blose. she will teach you and explain to you why we do the things we do and why people do the things they do.....most of her examples are from her life or her neighbors life.....fat larry!!

Marti is an awesome teacher! She utilizes unique teaching styles to get her point across and it actually sticks- even after the class is over! Attendance policy of something like 5 or less missed classes but you're not going to want to miss many if any. Grade based on class attendance (which is taken every day by passing around a tablet you have to sign), class participation, a mid-term, and a final. She gives you really thorough study guides two weeks or so before the class including the essays so if you basically fill out the study guide you'll do fine. She really is a great teacher, I'd tell anyone to take her. Oh yeah and as of right now she's only here on a temporary basis so take her while you still can and as often as you can!!

Marti was a first time teacher when i took her. She recieved flak from the administration for bringing what we all know about but seems 'taboo' to some into the classroom. She can talk about sex, drugs, and rock and roll, and be open with it. Will it offend some? Yes, maybe, but how conservative do we have to be for the sake of a good education with a good professor. Marti teaches with passion, knowledge, and enthusiasm, and you will NOT regret taking her class. She is very open, and in her class, it is almost like an open forum. Like she said in her professor comments (see below), you will learn and not even know it. Take her as a professor, and you will see just how a teacher should be. I will make one side note: If you are a devout Christian or very, very sheltered and do not like open discussions about sex, parties, and other 'fun things', you may want to consider another class. Sociology is studying social behaviors, and to do that, you need to be open and discuss all aspects of social behaviors. If you would find those kind of discussions offensive, pick another teacher, cause Marti doesnt need the complaints from people like you.

Prof Marti was the most interesting, quirky, energetic, personable prof I've had at Ship. There's no reason to miss her class, even if you're only taking notes, because it's still an interesting and entertaining class to sit in. I guess she's just a visiting professor, but I think she should teach at Ship permanently, especially since I'm about to declare myself a Soc minor, because of her class.

There are no words to describe how excellent Marti's class is. She really gets you thinking in class about how what she is teaching is related to your own life. She's hilarious to listen to and always has something eye catching on her body. Marti is a fabulous professor and recommend everyone get a taste of her class before you graduate

Although I'm not quite halfway through this course, I'd highly recommend Marti to any student looking to fill their gen-ed requirements. By bringing her personal experiences and situations into the classroom, she teachs her students how to interpret "sociojargon" into the real world. I was hesitant to take this class since I have it at 9:30 all the way on the opposite side of campus (which is one b*tch of a hike), however, Marti totally makes it worth it. She even understands and lets you have absenses, no questions asked. She also understands that not all of us are going to turn into little sociological machines, and strives to make the class as interesting as possible. And trust me, NO ONE rivals that wardrobe. Rock on Marti, you really "get it"!!

She has been very supportive, she has an AWESOME sense of humor, and doesnt care what people think.  Blose has to be the coolest teacher/person ever! Her classes are simple and so much fun. She tells you so many stories, the classes go by fast. She doesnt have any tests, just a midterm and a final and she gives you a review sheet thats straight forward. If you are taking a Soc class, definitely take Marti, I would def take her again in a heartbeat.

Professor Rebutal

Rebuttal #2: "And another thing, I am a NAZI about attendance!!!" (6/4/2004)

Just a quick one, gang--and man, am I a loser for checking this site out during the summer!--at least I am brave enough to admit that I have no life. And, I'm procrastinating madly. Writing my dissertation sucks, even if it is about cool women who tattoo for a living. But, anyway, I am picky as hell about student attendance. I allow a maximum of THREE ( 3 ) absences each semester that are UNEXCUSED. These include: a sudden fashion crisis, hangovers ( I have found that at SHIP this is a common student issue--indeed, a way of life!! ), not being able to find a parking spot and just making the spontaneous decision to say, "f*&k this s&*t, I'm going to Nicky's instead to hang with my homies and go smoke a bone", whatever. Medical matters are another issue, and I am always willing to consider VALID explanations for missing class. Typically, attendance counts for about 20% of students' final grades. I can't teach you if you aren't there.

I also get plenty miffed if students sleep in class. I don't put up with that crap. How would you feel if you were standing in front of 40 people and you spy someone drooling and snoring as you toss out your pearls of wisdom? YOU'D BE PISSED!!! YES! I warn my students next year: I just got a huge air bazooka and a battery-powered Uzi squirtgun. Sleepers, beware. Too bad if it is a morning class: if I have to be up, so do you. We'll all suffer together. So there. Again, thanks to my former students for the mad props--enjoy the summer, see you next year! Prof. Marti

"BUT, I DO CARE WHAT PEOPLE THINK!" Visiting Professor Marti Shouts Out (02/28/04)

Hey Potential and Realized Soc Scholars!

So, one of my students whined last week that professors never respond when students comment on them: well, tag, yer it, grrls and guys. I'm thrilled that at least two students out there are as happy as I am to be in my classes here at Ship. But hey, there are a good 380 of you out there from my first year, so get going all ready and write in! You've got plenty of pre Spring-break papers and exams--and procrastinating--to do! ( What do you think I'M doing right now? I have all your stuff to grade! :) )

I also wanted to address the comment that "[I] don't care what anyone thinks." Well, yes, I certainly do care!!!! ARRRGH! Here goes.

Granted, I stick out like a turd bobbing in a punch bowl around here ( nice imagery, eh? I'm kinda proud of this one ). I dress like a bad Elvis Impersonator/Tacky Drag Queen, and I am stuck in the 80's, a 30-something who still gets carded for cigarettes and has a Leopard Print fetish. But I seek to ENLIGHTEN, not OFFEND. And who really learns unless they're having fun? Education--especially sociology--begins once my students leave the classroom. And if you're having fun--you might just show up for class, and then you might learn. See?

Another thing: I am a sociological stealth bomber: I teach you when you ain't lookin'. In other words: you'll say my class is easy and that it is fun, because I shoot from the hip of real life. You're learning, and you won't even realize it. Sociology WON'T hit you while you are sitting there yawning in the dark staring at transparencies with all of these big dumb words, wishing desperately that you were at Nicky's, the parking lot of Sheetz, or wherever you all hang out. Sociology WILL hit you once you finally make it to those places you wish you were while you were doing head-bobs in class. My mission: for you to have the experience of never seeing the world the same way again. You'll even come to hate me for it.

I love it.

I just tell it like it is, strive to be myself ( nobody does "me" better than "me"--that goes for all of you, too ), and I try to stay halfway clued into things. I know Eminem isn't a chocolate product, for example, and can tell you how much clueless Jessica Simpson once paid for a thong and bra on an episode of "The Newlyweds". I also hate Justin Timberlake for stealing a sample from AC DC's "Back in Black" on one of his more hideous than ever songs getting airplay right now. I might be the only prof. that you'll see at a Rancid concert. You'll also find me at Wal Mart looking at all the weird people because I have no life and need lecture material, or stealing the Pink flamingos from my neighbors' lawns. Come see them, they are in my office window.

Well, thanks again everybody. Now get to some heavy procrastinating! LEND ME SOME SUGAR, I AM YOUR NEIGHBOR: SHAKE IT, SHAKE IT! ( another bad song )

Peace and out, hope to see you in my future classes ( and yes, there will be: see you next year! :) ) cheers and social science, and thanks for a good year so far, Marti
