The class started pretty slow. We did a lot of book work and notes which made it boring. Once we did some programming the class got a lot better. Albright was cool and able to joke with during class. He seemed willing to answer questions too. The tests weren't all that hard, he didn't give impossible questions. The one thing i didn't like was when he askeda question in class he would stand there til someone would answer. So participate, keep class moving, and things will be good.

Subject: Albright, finding his feet  (Dec 07 2004, 10:02AM)

Albright is finding his feet and at the same time teaching some entirely different classes. DataBase Managment and Comp Sci 1 are two different prospects on programing and requirements for programing. I don't know what he's been doing in Comp Sci 1, but i do know that he taught us the basics for Perl and SQL so that we understood how to use them before tossing us into the programs. And he does help when you take the time to meet with him. Don't fault him for inexperience, but be happy that he makes the effort to help and understands the material that he is teaching your class. Albright is also willing to take time to look up information about your code when he doesn't understand whats wrong with it so that he can help you. So give Albright time, and allow him to find his feet before you judge his class too harshly.

As of the time of this writing, Albright is a new professor and is obviously still working on perfecting his teaching techniques, but that being said, his class was pretty cool. I don't find DBMS to be very interesting, and the class started out kind of dry, but eventually he and the class opened up and it became laid back and kind of fun. His tests aren't too bad, although the projects are fairly lengthy, but there is hardly any real homework otherwise. My only real complaint was the distribution of the workload. The first half of the semester focused upon theoretical material; that is, he lectured, we listened, and nothing much else happened. The second half was project after huge project, and it was kind of overwhelming. One last thing to note - If you have trouble learning in class, he really is an excellent teacher during 1-on-1 sessions. Go to see him during office hours and you'll be amazed how much you'll learn in a 5 minute meeting. Overall, give him some time and he'll probably be one of the best comp. sci. profs. He's young, and therefore seems a little more understanding of students' needs and concerns.

Subject: Very Nice Guy  (Nov 04 2004, 03:10PM)

Basically, this is what happens, he walks in, tells us what we are working on, and then hands us labs to do. He doesn't do a lot of explaining to the class and what explaining he does is very rare and very minimal. You are expected to read the book and know your stuff. Oh, and if you want to know your grades, too bad, because he doesnt tell us anything (which is why my grade isn't listed). However, if you ever have a problem, he is very nice and very willing to help you inside and outside of class, and he seems to really care about if you understand everything. He explains things well if you ask him one on one, so if you want to learn ANYTHING thats what you HAVE to do. If you need/want a professor who (and I stress this) teaches regularly to the class as a whole then DO NOT take him. Overall I would say he is a good professor, I would take him again, but he is kind of an aquired taste.

This man does not teach at all. Well, for 3 minutes a day, maybe. He walks in, gives out the new lab and then assumes we can do everything in it. Tests werent too bad but the labs were killer. Most of the stuff I didnt understand and I had a programming course in high school. Avoid this class .

This professor really sucks at teaching. He has no clue how to present the information to the class. He does not have any understanding of java, which is what computer science is all about. Take this prof if you don't want to learn anything and you don't care if you fail out or not.

prof albright was definitely not the prof to take for me b/c i have had absolutely no background in programming ever and on the 3rd day we were supposed to be writing programs for the labs, which is the only thing he has you do every day. He was no help at all if i had questions. He would just tell me to "do this" and then wander off; there was no chance i was ever going to understand anything in there.

The guy is flat out boring. He can't keep the students' attention and doesn't really teach all that well. The thing is, all the work is straight out of the book so you can work at your own pace and leave class when you are finished. Tests were a little tough and he expects you to have a sound understanding and interest in the subject. He is at least a nice guy and is always willing to help though so you could do a lot worse than taking him.

If you have professor Albright for CS1, chances are you didn't choose him because the University schedules 1st semester freshman. He is always ready to answer your questions. Most of the class time is spent working on projects which is great because he is constantly helping people. The only problem that I can see people having with this class is learning the material. His sometimes unclear teaching style left some of my friends in the class a little lost. I had a few Java courses in high school, so I had a head start and didn't have much of a problem.

This comment is posted just before his second semester ever teaching, so this only applies to the next year or so. I don't recommend this professor for those who know little or nothing of the class they are taking him with. I found that if I had no prior knowlege of Java, that I would likely have recieved a C or worse. I expect him to really improve, though within a year, maybe two.

then by all means take him, if this is your first programing language then I recommend finding someone else. It was my first language and I found it to be very difficult to learn the language with this teacher, he just didn't know how to teach it. He would give an example of a concept then tell you to work the on the lab that had that concept, but the lab asked you to do things with that concept that went WAY beyond what he showed, and made things very confusing to me. Also there is a competcy exam for this class and he did not bother to find out for us what was to be on the test till the day before the test, lots of study time there.....

Not too good at teaching normally, he tends to just let us loose on the assignment. He will go around the room offering help, but you still tend to rely on the book, not him. Tests were easy, and the labs were very straightforward with lots of information to complete them. The 'Big Dizzle' is a good teacher if you already know a lot about C++/Java.
