Subject: Only take if you don't care about Art  (Sep 16 2014, 03:38AM)

If you actually want to learn about art, or your major pertains to it, I would avoid. If you're just taking this to fulfill gen ed, I'd take his class. His exams are not a joke, but the rest of the class is pretty much. Its mostly memorization. I suggest NOT drawing all the paintings, and just putting all the information on a Quizlet cards with an image of the painting and then study off your phone. There is no point in drawing them. He doesn't care for attendance, but you pretty much are guaranteed to do bad on the exams if you skip. You can't get the info anywhere else unless you ask a friend or something. Hes really casual, funny, and nice...brings food and candy sometimes which is awesome. Besides the exams, there is a field trip and a drawing project...both easy/fun. You don't have to go o the field trip, just prove you went to an approved museum and write a report on it.

I took Dr. Moilanen my first semester in college and was at first terrified by his outgoing, eccentric personality and amount of information required daily. But, after a week and then the first test I was hooked on his class. He believes in his students and challenges them to do their best and achieve perfection. I received perfect scores on all of his tests and assignments and couldn't be more pleased with the information I learned. There's never a dull moment in this class and the trip was definitely a highlight of the class. I advise you to take this professor and learn more than you ever believed possible!

Dr. Moilanen was a great professor. No book because you draw in class. He doesn't grade you on your artwork. Field trip to Washington D.C. which was a lot of fun. One little project but it was simple enough. Tests are difficult but extremely fair. If you study for the tests you will be fine. I would take him again, he was lots of fun and a great guy. This was the most fun class this semester and I enjoyed going every day.

Here is the low down on DR. M. He is absolutely the best prof. here at SHIP... that covers it. So here you go: 3 tests and no final. 3 points per question and 1 for your name. Do the math. There is also a line drawing easy, and a field trip (OH Yeah)that is a blast in Washington D.C. You have a short paper to do which is super easy, oh yeah take the late bus if possible. Main Point: if you have a humanities requirement to do take this class, just one warning you do art cards and they are easy but make sure you KNOW THEM for the test.

Dr. Moilanen was BY FAR my favorite professor during my four years at Ship. I had him my last semester of my last year for art appreciation. I only wish I had taken this required Gen Ed art class sooner. The guy is hilarious, participate in class and you WILL get an A (with some studying of course). Don't hesitate to ask questions and even go off-topic to discuss pop culture when class starts to get boring. He is also very easy to get to know on a personal level in and out of class, unlike a lot of my business profs. Moilanen cares very much to see his students succeed, regardless of their major. He even wrote me a reference to help me get a great salaried position as an accountant. In summary: TAKE EVERY POSSIBLE MEASURE to get into his art appreciation class, its definitely worth it. Thanks again Moilanen you really are the man.

Okay, so if you think you're going to take this class and get an easy A, then think again! You actually have to study the cards he gave you, but it's so easy! Field Trip Day was hilarious with Dr. M and I would def take him again for any class at Ship!

This class is so easy. Go to it and draw your cards. Study them and take your A. If you are taking the test and cant figure out a slide or two wait till the end when everyone leaves and he will help you out. Ask for juice boxes he will bring them. If you cant get an A in this class drop out of school and go help out at the Sh*t plant behind Bard.

Ok, first of all anyone who has anything bad to say about moilanen is uptight and retarded. He is the coolest professor I've ever had. He makes the class as interesting as an art class can be. He's really funny and I actually ended up learning a lot in this class. If you aren't too lazy and study a little for the tests you'll do fine. He brought us rice krispy treats and other snacks throughout the semester. He's very easy to get along with and loves students who enjoy his sense of humor. If you have to take art app. you really need to get him as your professor. He's awesome!!!

His class was easy if you made it to every one of them. He gave 3 tests and we had a poem and a picture to do and a trip to D.C. Great guy if you like very few graded exercises. He is around a lot and if you have any questions he is willing to sit and listen to any of the questions you may have and will try his best to help you pass.

Dr Moilanen is a really nice guy and this class wasn't bad at all. If you show up (and pay attention), study occasionally, and come to tests mostly sober, you'll do fine. I don't mind drawing, which probably helped me to pay attention in class, but to study, you just gotta put a little bit of time in to memorize/associate tidbits of information & paintings/sculptures/etc. If you spend a little time here & there, you'll ace his tests & as stated, there are 2 other minor contributing factors to the grade (museum trip & drawing/poem). Although these can be a pain, they can also be kinda fun if you let them be. I suggest taking dr. moilanen, art appreciation was a good experience with this guy...[]

This is one of the best profs. on campus. He is a little hyper sometimes but he's really nice. His tests can be a little bit hard but not too bad. This was one of those classes you didn't mind going to. I'd take him again.

When I first began this class I was skeptical, because I had never been a very artsy person. However, after a few classes of Moilanen I realized I was in a great class. He makes classes fun and enjoyable, while still getting through the artworks. I would recommend Moilanen to anyone who has to take an art class but doesn't want to be graded on their artistic talents. Great class, and he feeds you too

This guy is super nice and funny. I personally love this class and hes so nice and friendly you feel bad skipping. He brings snacks in for the class and LOVES new ideas. If you catch him in HAC randomly he might even give you candy or a juicebox. I recommend him because the class is just plain silly and fun and so is he.

Let's see...if you are required for your major to take art appreciation and aren't an art buff then Moilanen is a great choice! As a side bar: Unless he changes something I wouldn't recommend buying the book because we didn't use it. He covers all the basic masters but we didn't really go in any order. Huzzah for not having to especially memorize dates! What are you required to do? Basically on one side of an average index card you draw (as best you can) the art piece and on the other side you jot down who the artist is, his or her country, style, technique, misc info and of course the museum and location. (Sure it sounds juvenile but believe it or not you'll learn a lot more than you thought you would via this method.) Some kids went really nuts and typed everything up etc...but it's not required. So your cards build up as time goes by and you are tested 3x's during the semester. To pad your grade a bit you are required to go to D.C. National Gallery (I think it's 100 points if you just show up) and two small "studio" projects...one of the ones we did was make sense of a squiggly picture and write a poem about it. Nothing too challenging folks. I enjoyed the class. Hopefully your class will be talkative and excited about the subject because it makes the class more interesting. Moilanen definitely goes out of his way to make the class interesting and get folks to talk (including bringing Koolaid to hype us up.) Anyway as a recap...take Moilanen, speak up in class and enjoy (oh my gosh, enjoy!) art appreciation.

Going into the class i really didn't know what to expect, because i've never been a real art fanatic, but moilanen made the class interesting and kept my attention. We drew a lot of pictures but never got graded on them, we used them as notes. If you take this class (art appreciation) take this professor, however DO NOT buy the book. You never use it, ever.

Great Guy. He makes an hour and fifteen minutes fly by. Class consists of copying slides onto note cards, studying those cards 3 times over the semester and taking 3 somewhat challenging tests. I recommend him to anyone who is willing to have a good time.

Before I get started, I failed this course because I missed the final. OOPS ON MY PART. The thing that upset me about that was that I honestly thought the final was on Thursday instead of Tuesday. When I sent him an email about it, after I found out, he replied very rudely, saying he had already given the makeups and he was sick. He also asked why I didn't contact him sooner... not thinking that I had said that I thought the final was earlier that day. That was the moment that firmly set me against him. Before that, however, I still was having trouble enjoying him as a professor. He has very high expectations for his students which he makes clear in every single class. For each exam, you have about 40-50 note cards to study. This includes a drawing of the artwork plus the information in several different categories. And when it comes to the exams, there's just over 30 questions with UNSEEN slides--that means he'll test you on A LOT of artwork that you didn't view in class, but is similar to what you did. He also has favorites among his students and it's incredibly obvious during class. There's also a field trip and a small project. While I was in class, I will admit that I found the material and his several side stories interesting, but at the end of the day, I no longer enjoyed learning about art.

Subject: ABSOLUTE WORST PROFESSOR AT SHIPPENSBURG  (Oct 22 2008, 12:10PM)
Student: Anonymous (elem. edu)
Class:art appreciation (--)

If you are taking this class for elementary education or any other major I would not recommend this professor to you. Every thing is about sex to him. Every picture has a sexual meaning. If you need help he WILL NOT HELP YOU with anything. He does bring food here and there and tries to act like your friend other than the professor. You have to make 55+ note cards for every test with like 10 categories on each. He talks and goes about class at a rapid pace so you can not ask questions or you will feel dumb. On the test he only chooses maybe 7-10 note cards to put on there so there was no point in knowing every single sexual hidden meaning behind all 55 pieces of art. But if you're into knowing about sexual meanings by a teacher who is a bit creepy then take this class.

Dr. M is a total weirdo. His class set up is awesome because you dont need a textbook but make your own by drawing paintings on one side and then writing information on the other side. He is a nice guy, but sometimes hes really weird. He makes too many sexual refrences that really arent what the painting is about. He will bring in Koolaide and treats everyone in a while but I would give that up to have a teacher who actually taught me something. You only have 3 tests and a field trip (another good aspect of the course) but if you arent good at memorizing facts for 53 note cards that have like 5 categories a piece, dont take this prof for art appreciation. I heard other profs just have you trace your hand.

Dr. M is a great professor. He is really passionate about the subject and wants you to do well. He tells interesting and funny stories during the whole class. The class consists of him showing you pieces of art, then you draw them on your index card. On the lined side of the index card, you write information about the artist and the piece. It is a lot to write and remember. It seems easy at first, but when you have 60 cards piled up, its a lot. You have three exams, a drawing/poem project, and a museum field trip. Overall a good class, but expect to do a lot of work.
