Whiteley is a professor who you think you loathe at first, but then he turns into your best friend. He is the most reasonable, and real-life oriented man in the entire art department. Not only does he give you applicable real world suggestions about how to improve your work, but he does so in a way the does not involve screaming, crying, or obscure references. Sometimes it seems like he doesn't completely know EVERY single facet of the programs he teaches. Sometimes it seems like he's being unreasonable, but I ensure you that he is very knowledgeable. He is a nice man, who is honest about your work. He will also work to solve any problem you have with an assignment or help you with a technical issue. Most importantly, he is aware that the whole point of obtaining a college degree is to make money so that you can actually pay your own bills when you graduate. He only wants to help you improve in a realistic way, instead of telling you to piss all over your work and immortalize it in lacquer, which is refreshing. Also, he's pretty funny and laid back.

This class wasn't hard by any means, but that doesn't mean he's a bad professor. We got to choose the hands-on projects we wanted to do, which is what Art Appreciation should be about. We didn't have to study hard for tests, but we did have to get creative. He often canceled or shortened the actual class period, and had funny stories to tell when we were there. He was great!

First of all, this will be the easiest general ed. requirement taken here at Ship Uni ONLY if you take this professor. If you take another, it will end up being the hardest. That being said, you make your own grade by doing small, 2-minute projects. If you complete 4 10 pt mini-projects and get all open-note online quizzes done (20 questions each, 1 pt each, 3 quizzes) you will have 100 pts. If you do poorly on the quizzes, just do more small, 2-minute projects a toddler could complete, and you will get an A. By far the easiest professor here at Ship, and do not take Art Appreciation if you do not get him.

Prof. Whiteley is a good professor to take, he may not follow the syllabus but he makes class interesting. He kind of makes things up as he goes which is kind of nice because I hate going by certain things. He is very open minded for what kind of project you can do. He isn't a hard grader either, he doesn't ask to much of any student just simply go to class and do what little he asks you to do and you will recieve a good grade. I recommend to take this prof. if you are taking a tough schedule some semester.

Yeah this class was easy, but you learn alot and have the freedom to do what you want. you dont have to follow someone else's rules. attendance is up to you, if you want to get a good grade and create stuff on your own, you go. if you don't want to do those things, don't go. He doesnt care. He's new, so he'll get used to things eventually

If you're deciding whether or not to take this professor for an online ART 101 course, DO NOT DO IT! I felt that I definitely did not get the grade that I deserved in the class after putting so much time and effort into it. Your grade is mainly discussion questions, and after looking at the grade distribution, you'd be lucky if one student in the class would get about an 85 on a discussion question. He requires you to post something once on at least 3 different days in the week. If you don't, you fail the discussion. There were also two quizzes in the class and a final paper. You were allowed 10 minutes for the quizzes, each equating to about 16.67% of your final grade and they were 10 true or false questions where you really had to pay attention because he would include/leave out the tiniest little detail from the book. He gave everyone good grades on the final paper but by then, the damage was already done. According to the grade distribution, the highest final grade in the class was an 84, equating to a low B. If you can avoid taking him for an online course, I highly recommend or else you're wasting your time for a course where you need to put in a tremendous amount of work.

First off, if you're reading this, you most likely HAVE to take comp design. So I'll start by saying Whiteleys class is easy. He doesn't ask much of you. But he won't teach anything either. Hes a flirt with all the girls, which is creepy. If you're a girl, you'll pass. He doesn't know any of the programs he's teaching. He requires you to read through the textbook yourself and teach yourself everything. If you don't, you won't know how to do anything. The class is easy because nothing is expected of you. But really, this guy's pretty terrible.

I learned absolutely nothing in this class. All the guy knows about art is corporate logos. He doesn't even have his own syllabus but reads from a powerpoint he didn't even make if he feels like it. He will then quiz you on random pointless facts from the quizes... we had three of those. For those of you who actually had hoped to learn something or have knowledge in art he will piss you off, if you want the easiest three credits you will ever earn, take him.

Subject: The Worst Teacher I've Had @ Ship  (Apr 20 2006, 08:35AM)

12 of 37 students found this review helpful.

I've had this teacher for 3 classes now (all comp design courses) and I am honestly not exaggerating when I say that I haven't learned a single thing from him. He knows absolutely nothing about the programs that he's supposed to teach with... In Web Design, I mentioned FTP and he had no idea what it was. I wouldn't even consider this guy a teacher, he's a "facilitator" - You come to the Huber (art building) computer lab during the class hours and if he decides to show up, he spends his time walking around talking to the girls, and he won't address the class as a whole or say a single word to you unless you ask him a question... And most of the time when you do, he just acts offended or gets annoyed. He has his own design website... And he told us that someone else created it for him. If you're a web designer, teaching web design classes, shouldn't you have put together your own website? If you ever make a comment about the lack of structure of the class or act at all frustrated he will get in your face and make a big scene. I don't know what the art departments criteria was for hiring this guy but he has made my experience as an art major (who hopes to be a graphic designer) pretty miserable. I don't have an unkind word to say about anyone else in the art department (most of the other profs are absolutely wonderful), but this guy has got to go. Avoid taking his classes at ALL COSTS if you want to learn... But if you're a semi-attractive girl and you want an easy grade, take his classes and just laugh when he tells you stupid jokes.

Do not take this professor. He is a nasty, lying person. The dean recommended that I withdraw from the course after the withdraw date. He went off on me in the middle of class about personal issues such as how much money I make (because I refused to purchase a MAC and Adobe software just for his course), and told me I "cut corners" because I planned on getting my MA in something different than Art. All this was because I tried to give him some pointers on how he could help out the students with things we were having problems with. I would also try to stop by his office hours and he would never be there. He would return after his hours had ended and tell me that he had gone for lunch! Office hours are a requirement of the university, not meant to be spent eating lunch. This guy is arrogant and acts like he knows everything, in reality he knows very little. He's always bragging about teaching at SSD in Georgia like he's some big shot and SU should bow down to him because he's from some big design school. Take Ruby instead.

If you want to learn anything about Art, do not take Whiteley. He doesn't know anything about Art, but pretends that he does. It was very obvious that he knew nothing about the class...I even corrected him several times. If you have any background in Art, it will sicken you how horribly he teaches. He didn't make up his own syllabus, or the horrible PowerPoint presentations that we had to go through every single class. He talked nonstop about things like how Star Wars is a religion (I am not kidding at all!), or what movies he had seen recently. He is never there if you need to ask him a question, he never returns e-mails at all, but yet he will yell at you if you don't get in contact with him. He is a terrible professor and I really encourage everyone to avoid taking his classes if at all possible.

This guy is the biggest joke. He can not even write his own syllabus, so of course you have nothing to go by. He makes up everything as he goes to include his stupid journal. Oh and to listen to him talk he has been every place and seen everything but it is amazing the little slip ups he makes which tells you he is full of it. Yeah the class is e z when nothing but a few stupid write ups of exhibits are what he asks, not to mention the pointless journal he abandons half way through the semester. This guy needs to do students a favor and stop teaching and just stay home and watch Sunday Morning! Don't bother with this guy!

Whiteley expects you to already know all about the programs you are supposed to be using/learning in his class. Hello? If I knew the program already I would not be in this class. He does not teach a single day out of any class. The only day of the entire semester he will address the class as a whole is the first day. On the first day he will minimally explain what he expects. The rest of the semester he walks around the room flirting with a select few girls doing their projects for them. If you are not one of those select girls if you try to ask him a question he seems to get angry, annoyed or tries to make you feel stupid that you don't already know the answer. Some classes have many projects, some only have one. Some classes have a book that you can use to at least teach yourself the program if you don't already know it, some do not... He used to do project critiques with the rest of the class which were really helpful because it allowed everyone in the class to constructively criticize your work and allow you to see where your flaws were. I wish he would still do that. One time in one class he willing came by my computer and complemented on one aspect of one project. You would have thought he had given me a million dollars I was so happy to even be acknowledged.
I used to get mainly c's in his class, some b's. Last semester I got an a. So I feel like I am learning to understand what he wants and expects after 4 years. With that said here are my points of wisdom to share. 1. Don't give up. Track him down and ask him questions, ignore the angry or annoyed looks it is his job to teach you, don't get discouraged. Eventually he cannot ignore you anymore. 2. If you go to lab hours outside of class, make sure if he is in the room he sees you. I think it makes him happy to see students going above and beyond. 3. He hates and I do mean hates gradient fills in design. Do not use them in your project. 4. White space is ok, even good. 5. Keeping it simple is good. 6. Don't use the same tired and over used colors. Branch out on a limb. 7. Due dates are arbitrary dates randomly selected and usually mean nothing to him. If you feel like you aren't going to finish a project on time, talk to him. Have a good reason, and he will let you slide. Overall: He is a little hard to swallow at first, and if I had the choice I would take Ruby instead. Yeah she is a little spacey, but she cares equally about all of her students and does not make you feel dumb. Also she tries to give you an overview of the program you will be working with unlike whiteley.

Do not take this class if you want to learn something. We rarely had class, but he would wait till we got there to cancel. When we had class he would talk about the Jetsons, star wars, furniture etc. He is a nice laid back guy but is a stickler when it comes to assignments. Take this if you never feel like doing anything...but this class is a waste of my time.
