I thought he was crazy and always gave students hardship. I thought he wanted to fail one third of the class. But his ways, like retakes and cheat sheets, are quite effective. Plus, be honest, he is not so hard to understand if you come every time.

Everyone makes Dr. Chiou out to be the equivalent to the devil. He isn't that bad. Show up to class, put a little effort into it and you'll at least give you a C. He never gives anyone below that, and if you get below that he'll give you a chance to get a better grade. He may be hard to understand, but by the 2nd class you'll be fluent in speaking chiou. This guy is pretty damn smart and will help his students pass.

I honestly don't know how people can say his class is hard! Yeah the guy is a little hard to understand but he's easy! He goes through the material so slow and if people don't understand, he goes over it until they do. He's a good guy too, always willing to help students. What other teacher would buy pizzas for all his classes? And, in the business college what prof lets you retake an exam if you mess up?!?! Come on people, you're not going to get that anywhere else. He wants his students to succeed. He lets you have 5 CHEAT SHEETS for the final exam!! There was an exam where the questions were EXACTLY like the homework!!honestly, I don't know why this guy has a bad rep. I say take him!

He's a very good prof if you just put effort into the class. The man is very smart and once youre in the class 2 or 3 times you get to understand him. The only reason people do bad in the class is that they are management majors and are not used to doing any work. His classes are an easy A and you get to learn alot if you put in the effort.

Subject: Do you like to teach yourself?  (Mar 23 2010, 11:06AM)

Don't get me wrong, Dr. Chiou is very intelligent and thoroughly understands the finance world. However, he is a very ineffective teacher. The class usually consists of him going over the powerpoints, but he just reads what is stated, goes off on some tangent, and scribbles his own version of the formula on the board. There were times when he would be teaching and I would look around and the whole class was just lost. He is definitely hard to understand all throughout the semester. He fails to explain hard concepts and expects you to read the chapters OVER and OVER again. Oh and he expects you to spend (I think) 12 hours a week working on his material. That would be fine if we did not have work in other classes.. He does allow you one handmade cheatsheet and his tests were definitely tough. I recommend to squeeze as much information on your cheatsheet as you need. Overall, I've heard better comments on the other Finance professors so choose them over Chiou.

So, this class isn't really all that hard, but you basically have to teach yourself everything. Dr. Chiou is a very intelligent man, but you can barely even understand what he says. And when he lectures, he goes on and on and on. It seems like he never stops talking. I can't tell you how many times the whole class was confused just because we couldn't understand the words that were coming out of his mouth. He also has a tendency of embarrassing his students. If one of his students does something wrong he'll point it out to the class and drag it on for a while. It's kind of annoying and cruel too. If he could just tone down his accent a little bit, he would be a lot better teacher. He also really needs to find some better teaching methods. He pretty much only relies on his powerpoint slides; the powerpoints are great and all but his students need more. The end! "No risk. No return."

This dude is the worst teacher I've had in my higher or lower education career. First of all, how does Shippensburg hire these finance professors who cannot speak fluently, therefore you cannot understand a word. Also, Chiou doesn't even have good grammar skills let alone speaking skills. His impotence as a teacher is clear when you have over 10 kids retaking the test for getting under a 75%. His ego is through the roof as shown by harsh emails sent back to students who are just a little frustrated and not to mention he devoted one entire class to showing us research he did that's posted on the internet ( who gives 2 sh*ts? not I). I pay to get taught advanced finance and I know even when he tries he cant, but he should at least try to do his job. And another reason why students do not like him is that when he actually teaches you cannot understand him anyway so we all have blank stares. Sometimes he can be ok (which is about 10% of the time). He gives h-work which is nearly impossible until you go over it in class and 4 tests on which 2 you will see stuff never even spoken about. Yea so what you get a cheat sheet. The single sheet works real well when every test is cumulative. [] I pity finance majors because he is the only one to teach Institutions and Advanced finance. He is also never in his office. You should just transfer for a semester and take these classes at a grade school because you'll learn more there.

Well at first I thought this class might not be that bad. I made it past his horrible English, and even did well on the first couple tests. There is alot of homework, but it only helps you in the end. He gives Extra credit sometimes, just because he feels like it. The main reason I am listing a negative comment is because he comes late almost everyday, and tried to fit the rest of the coursework in just 1 day. All the tests are 20-25 multiple guess questions. The last day of class he tried to teach new, very difficult material, which we didn't practice or go over much at all. The Final was composed of half of the new material which my classmates and I were not familiar with, not because we didnt study...Because he rushes, and doesn't cover material well enough! Granted I passed this class, and did pretty well, I don't want others having to deal with guessing half of the answers on your final.

Yes this prof does offer retests if you score poorly, however isnít it a reflection of how incompetent the professor is at educating his students when over half the class needs to retake a test. This man has no clue how to teach a class. His grading system is also very sketchy.... Financial management has an essay based test and his grading is not standard from one student to the next. Do not take this professor at all costs. Stay in ship an extra semester, switch schools, do anything except try and learn from this man. I hope Shippensburg comes to realize how ineffective he is at teaching and never makes him a full professor.

Chiou is the most annoying teacher I have ever had. Most likely if you're taking him you don't have a choice.. but just a forewarning before you fail all his tests.. LEARN EVERYTHING YOURSELF! Going to his classes are so pointless.. you can't understand a WORD he says and he's extremely annoying and calls on everyone and tries to make you look stupid. Then you go to take the test and it's ridiculous things that you've never seen before. You also have to do a project for each class. I would definitely recommend not taking him if you have any other choice.

Professor Chiou is an idiot. His tests are nothing like the class lectures or homework. He tries to act cool by telling jokes, but no one understands them because of his accent. The class can't even understand what he's saying for the lectures - it's that bad! Plus he messes up calculations and formulas all the time when he writes them on the blackboard. But on the bright side, he's there to help you at office hours and several of the tests were take home where you can get the smart people in class to give you the answers. But if you can take anyone else for a finance class, take them. Rim is so much better than Chiou.

The university has to be kidding having this guy as a professor here. He can't speak English at all, if it wasn't for the powerpoint slides, you would never be able to understand what he is trying to teach. The tests are on things he didn't go over in class and then blames us for getting bad grades. Only 3 people scored over 75% on the first test. Try to avoid if you can!

In general the finance profs are bad. This guy however is absolutely atrocious. He can't teach at all and his english is sketchy. He had nothing relevant to offer and his tests made no sense or had anything to do with the book or what he was talking about.

Don't miss any classes. He goes over all the test info in class sometimes right before the test, but if there is a lot of people out he will do it that day.I missed one class and failed the test for this reason. There are not many points in this class so one mistake can cost you.

Well I definitely agree that he is not very effective.. how could he be, you can't even understand what he's saying 95% of the time. The tests are crazy and usually have problems on them that you have never seen, which is why everybody does so bad. But at the same time.. he's a good guy and extremely funny at times so it's really hard not to like him. I want to hate him but I just can't.. I think as long as you do the problems at the end of the chapters you should manage alright.

Everything said is true. He tries to teach, but speaks in his own version of English, it is impossible to understand. The only good thing about this class is it is impossible to fail. Anyone who recievs below a 75% avg has the chance to re-take the test. When taking the re-test the highest grade one can recieve is a 75% Hey a "C" is better than an "D" or lower.
