Dr. Benbow is very picky about how papers are formatted and his exams are tough but if you review all of the power points he puts on D2L and you read what is assigned you will receive an A in his class easily. He will pull you out of your comfort zone but that's very much needed for social work anyway. He provides plenty of extra credit, so far I think there is about 50 points possible in extra credit. That's a whole exam! Dr. Benbow is an awesome person overall, he is very loud and goofy but it just makes the class 10 times more interesting! TAKE HIM IF YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO SO!!!!

You may hear crazy things about Dr. Benbow, but at the end of the day, he's an amazing professor. He will help you out with academic stuff, life stuff or anything really. Yes, his exams are hard, but just study and don't stress. He's picky on papers, but once you get his formatting down, you'll be fine.

Dr. Benbow is one of my favorite professors at ship!! He has a very unique style of teaching. He WILL get you out of your comfort zone. Be prepared to do a lot of work in his class. All the work definitely pays off for future classes!
TAKE DR. BENBOW IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO, YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

Dr. Benbow is a great professor! He doesn't read from a power point! Expect to do the readings to get a decent grade because he does ask questions that if you did not do the reading, you will not know the answers! Each of his classes supplements what you should be reading. He uses real life examples from current events, and he does a lot of group activity. If you are a quiet person, you should probably practice being a little more outspoken! He is really outgoing and likes to have a good time in class. You can expect to hug your peers, listen to crazy music and dance in front of everyone! His tests are not that hard. He does include A LOT of information from the text, but if you are not in class, you will not know a large portion of what is on the exam as well. There are a lot of papers, but he doesn't grade that hard. I loved this class! I missed only one in the entire semester, and its because I was in the hospital! I actually liked going! Also, he is ALWAYS around and willing to meet with you if you have questions comments or concerns! Great Guy, Great Class!

I love Dr. Benbow. He is one of my favorite professors I've had here at ship. At first it takes a little to get used to him because he tries to get you out of your comfort zone and be comfortable with the people in the class and him. He loves to tease his students and have a good time. He teaches in a way that you can learn the information without having to memorize it. During projects... just have a general idea what you are talking about. Do not read off a script. Give lots of feedback, your opinions, and you'll be fine. His quizzes and tests aren't bad at all. His class is very enjoyable.

Dr. Benbow is amazing! He may be a little intimidating at first but he's really just one big teddy bear. He is very family oriented and will talk about his wife and daughters at least once during the class period. He is very interested in helping every student, he wants us to succeed. There are 4 mini papers due throughout the semester as well as one group project and a field trip. He does a lot of group work during class and you get to know everyone very well. Don't miss class b/c he takes attendance, but you will want to go to class every day. If you are thinking about social work as a major he will help you figure out whether it's the major for you.

He is an awesome professor!! At first he will give you a 19 page syllabus... but in the end he explains everything. You just have to earn his respect. He eventually becomes a friend, and you will learn a lot from him.

Dr. Benbow's assignments are logical and reasonable! However, he does not provide much instruction and tends to just think you know exactly how to do things! He expects EVERYTHING to be typed and will not accept hand written assignments. This class has a large workload which wouldn't be bad if he provided more direction on how to do the assignments. However, he is available to answer questions but often just tells you to figure it out on your own. Not a difficult class but requires effort and it will be useful to make friends in this class because you will need them if you have questions on assignments.

For social work majors this class is already an interesting class. Benbow is the best professor. I had this class on Tuesdays 6:30-9:15 and I never minded going to class. The 3 hours went so fast. He is very fair and will extend deadlines if the class agrees. There is alot of work involved but that is with any social work class. The work is sensible and necessary and sometimes even fun. He is funny and entertaining and gives you the opportunity to add your input. TAKE HIM AS MUCH AS YOU CAN!!

Diversity was really fun class. He has you interact and get to know your classmates. If you're for a class that you can take 6 classes in, this is it. Most of the class days are made up of group activities and some days you play games. You are required to complete an 8-10page interview where you interview someone from a different background. You have several small quizzes that he calls exams which are extremely easy if you do the reading which is very little. You also have a big paper which is 15pages long where you have to develop an intervention program which is difficult but if you go to him for help earlier it's a lot easier and he grades fair on all his assignments.

Honestly college is meant to have fun yes, but mainly to be educated. I'm not going to lie... the material in this class isn't all that interesting but the class at still enjoyable. Benbow is a straightforward and sarcastic guy that can also take a joke and only wants the best for student. He may come off as a hard ass and he is but for the right reasons. I know I did work in this class that wasn't half as good as my normal and would still get A's. If you have a choice take benbow, cause he's worth it. A really wonderful guy.
