Subject: Hard, but real  (Dec 04 2007, 12:00AM)

Dr. Taylor is not joking when she says she has high expectations in class. She really expects you to participate and put complete thought into the assignments. If you spend a half hour working on one of her assignments you are lucky to even get a D, but in the end you are only hurting yourself. Becoming an HR Professional requires that you learn everything she teaches. Only putting in minimal work will only hurt your grade and make you look unprofessional in the real world. Admittedly, she can be a little hostile but deep down she's just like anyone else. My only issue with Dr. Taylor is that she sometimes lacks on the follow through...i.e, "I'll have your assignment grades on Thursday" and then nothing materializes. She tries really hard to make the classwork as close to the real world as possible. The HR Law cases are EXTREMELY important so put alot of work into them. The Org Relations bookwork is important to understand (read thoroughly and study in advance for her exam), but the simulation is pretty cool. You get to negotiate a labor contract...it was a nice way to end the term.

Subject: Every manager is an HR manager   (Mar 27 2007, 12:15PM)

Dr. Taylor comes off as being somewhat mean for the first few classes, but don't let that scare you. I think she does this to make students who are lazy and do not want to do any work drop her course. I am not even an HR major but I found myself scheduling courses with her I don't even need to graduate. All the negative comments say that she has no real world experience. Well this is because she took time off to raise her children, and go back to school to get her Ph.D. Yea her classes are hard, and they require a lot of work, but youre in the college of business so you should expect that. If you want easy courses with no or little work, become an Elem. Ed. major. All I can say is that I learned more in her classes than most other business courses. If youre going to be a business professional, you should take her courses. Whether you like it or not, if youre a manager you will be dealing with HR issues everyday.

I think Dr. Metzler is a good professor. Even though there is a lot of writing done, and it does seem like there is a lot to read per week, she doesn't usually keep on track with things and puts stuff off for a while. In Org. Behavior her tests were all open note and open book, but in HR Mgmt., only the essay part is open book. The kind of downside is that there are only 2 tests, so there is a lot of material to study for one exam, but she makes sure they are fair. Participation is a big factor in her class, but as long as you even skim the chapter beforehand and add something to the class, you'll get points. The HR Mgmt. class is a lot more difficult, but it's certainly not impossible. She tells some interesting stories once in a while, and she definitely has a sense of humor. She does lose people's papers though once in a while, so make sure you keep the stuff saved for a while in case you have to hand another copy in again, because she usually takes a really long time to grade things. I'd definitely recommend her for a class. As for HR being stupid, good luck working in a business without it. You'd be getting sued every other day.

I also took Dr. Metzler and I have to disagree with a lot of the accusations made in the negative comments. The reason those people didn't like the class or the prof are most likely because they did not come in prepared and half-assed the whole class. Don't go to college if you're going to half-ass your classes! I did all the assignments and the first few received lower grades so I went to talk to her and she told me exactly what she was looking for and how to get higher grades and even offered to read them before I turned them in if I did the assignment a little early. She made herself available. I did well on both the midterm and the final even with vague questions. If you think HR is dumb I would keep that to myself or you're going to find it very hard to get a job! This class was taught well and I look forward to taking another class with Dr. Metzler. And by the way, I'm a guy.

This is one of those situations where you have to comment due to the idiotic comments others have posted. If you want a real review of her teaching, then read the following: I'm currently taking the law class, so I can't comment on the org behavior class (though I am taking it and HR Administration with her next semester). Every week you cover one chapter. Each class consists of a little bit of lecture and mostly discussion on the readings. At the beginning of each week, a 1-2 page writeup is due on an end of the chapter question she assigned. This is to prepare students for the discussions during the week, not just to write, as someone said below. Every class you are encouraged to volunteer thoughts and opinions on the current discussion and through this earn a point. Yes, she does expect you to know the material and participate instead of just being your usual lazy-self. If you participate consistently, you'll get a 3/3 for that week's points, an easy grade booster. Losing midterms...I don't know about that, didn't happen in my class. There is a midterm and a final, so those class participations and writeups help your grade. The tests are mainly multiple-choice(around 30-40), and they involve a lot of trick questions, which does admittedly suck. There were two very short essay questions at the end to answer as well. No, she doesn't curve, but she did take the highest grade in the class, because noone got 100%, and make that the max score possible. Overall, I don't particularly agree with her testing style, but what the others didn't tell you was it's completely open-note/open-book/use whatever the hell you want so that lessens the stress. As for HR being stupid...I can't begin to tell you how dumb of a comment that is. Let's just say that's the type of comment I expect from someone with an indecisive major like "general business". HR, in reality, are those people responsible for training the managers and staff to do the right thing so you don't do something stupid and get yourself, others, or the company in deep-sh*t. Without HR, good luck training people, resolving disputes, assisting in creating contracts, hiring people and firing people (while following the countless local/state/federal laws), providing benefits and compensation, recruiting, etc. If you don't want to believe me then fine, that's your choice. Just remember this isn't some class where you can be a bum and do jack-sh*t like most other courses, so take her if you want to give a damn. And no, I'm not female.

The classes were interesting, the tests were not very difficult and class work load was light. BUT... To take a student's grade from a B to a D due to not participating every class, but 35+ other students competing for it also it does not gauge my academic knowledge on the subject and really pisses me off.

All I can say is she is horrible. I do not understand why she is still even teaching. To me, Shippensburg University hires the best. They shouldn't have hired her. She always judged the students and flirts with the boys like crazy. She always talks about being professional, but she has no professionalism herself. I am not saying this to be cruel, but I hope future students avoid her at all costs.

I took Vicki Taylor for an HR class two years ago. It was one of the worst classes in the MBA program and that is saying a lot with the list of poor teachers at SU. But Vicki takes the prize as the worst. She knows nothing about HR. She is always trying to be your friend, but wants to impress you with her business knowledge. What a joke. [] All of the things outlined in an earlier student's profile are true. She got married in the middle of the class schedule and just left us out in the cold. She asked for feedback and then slammed people for offering their opinions. In short, she is a total mess. I would urge all MBA students to stay away from her class.

When I first met Dr. T, I was thrilled. at last a great hr teacher!!!!! Someone who could act as a role model. I loved hr and taking classes from her. That was last year. This year, Dr. T has changed. She no longer has high standards. She no longer makes her class a challenge. She has become just another teacher who seems not to care. This year even the dummies can get a good grade. Dr. t only wants to be everyones friend. She talks and kids around, students no longer have a desire to be hr professionals. I do not understand what happened???? Last year dr. t inspired me to want to be a great hr professional. This year all I want is to finish her class. They are now boring and stupid because she has dropped her standards. The only thing I can say is, if the old Dr. t is teaching, she is the best. But if the new Dr. t is teaching get ready for the same stuff you get from the rest of the business teachers, wich is not too good.

Subject: yes, she was terrible  (Oct 07 2006, 09:29AM)

Dr. Taylor is pretty bad. Prior comments about her summer MBA class are true. She was terrible. Her book knowledge of HR was good, but her experience was lacking. She did get married in the middle of the class and just left the class. It was unprofessional because summer classes only last 6 weeks. Next, she did ask for feedback on Bb and then she acted unprofessional once again by commenting on student feedback. Dr. Taylor has many problems. First, she wants to act like she is a trained HR professional. She is not. Her HR knowledge is all academic. When practicing HR professionals point out her lack of experience she becomes angry and upset. Dr. Taylor has thin skin. She cannot accept ANY negetive feedback. I am sure that undergraduates only provide her with praise, but MBA students do not have any qualms about indicating where she needs some work. In conclusion, if I were an MBA student I would not take her class. I have heard that she will not be teaching in the MBA Program any longer, so the problem is taken care of. But for other students she is still a problem. I understand that student complaints reached the Dean and other top administators which is a good thing. Dr. Taylor should not be allowed to teach anyone. She is just too unprofessional.

First off, you do have to participate, but if you're not willing to ever participate in class, you shouldnt be a management major at all....you need to learn to talk to people. She grades very easy for this..talk once or twice a week and you'll get a 3/3. As for her 5 assignments....she'll tell you what she wants, you do just that, and then you get a 7 or 8. She seems to expect everyone can easily understand all aspects of HR....and she grades on format and sourcing....I used a program to write my paper that also cites the sources, which might I add I have also used to help me with every other paper I've written in college, including college writing, and never had a problem with....and she told me that I don't know how to properly reference a site and it could technically be considered plagerism. Her tests are impossible, and her essays stupid....again you put exactly what you THINK she'd want...and a complete and thoughtful answer, and you get a 7 or 8 at max because you couldn't read her mind as to exactly what she'd want, word for word. Stay away from her if you can unless you want to memorize a text book, the HR West site, become psychic, and listen to her talk nonstop about her businesses and life

When you first start off with Dr. Metzler you think she will be pretty good. Then as time goes on you hope she will be ok. Then you finally know she is a real b%$#h.
First, she lost student mid-terms and she did not record the grades. The students had to take the class average for a grade.
Next, not all students in this class are hr majors. Many have to take this class because it is required and have no interest in hr. But she teaches it like everyone is so interested in what she has to say. And hr is so boring and stupid. I mean just stupid, dumb, and brain-killing. But Dr. Metzler could care less, she just keeps talking and talking. Her tests are impossible mutiple-guess, no curve. It sucks.
Finally, if you are not an hr major or a female you are in real trouble. She is nice to hr majors who kiss her butt and visit her. But if you are not an hr major and do not want to "talk" to her and are male you will get the shaft.
My advice --- stay away from her unless you are an hr major and female. Otherwise she will make your life miserable.

This class is easy. It is so easy that it is stupid. And the teacher is stupid. She tries to be nice and cool, but she is just stupid. The lectures are ok. The tests are easy. But every week a short paper is due. If there was a reason for this paper it might be fine, but it is just writing just to write. You do not learn anything, except how much you hate to write. Dr. Metzler tries to act like she is your friend. She plays music and acts like she gets it, but she does not get it. She just wants you to write until you drop, for no reason. You just say the same thing over and over.

Okay so, Dr. Taylor is WAY demanding. Even for a major level class I was surprised at how much was required. I spend more of my time preparing for this class then I do sleeping in a week. However, if you put time and an honest effort into your assignments and exams, you will do fine. My only problem with this professor is the way she handles her students. She seems to talk down to her students and constantly be assessing you. I feel like I'm on trial every time I go in there. I don't feel comfortable enough to participate so like everyone has said, I'm going to loose major points in this class for not participating. She has tried to be everyone's buddy, but at the same time I feel like she's judging me every time I open my mouth instead of really listening to what I said. Otherwise, I've learned quite a bit thus far. She responds to e-mails quite fast during the week, but is unavailable on weekends. She has given me allowances to miss class for extenuating circumstances. As she's the only one who teaches the HR Admin class be prepared to read, write, and study your butt off if you want to get a good grade. Also, this class will help you in HR Law.

Dr M knows everything about HR and she wants you to know everything about HR. Shes really smart and kinda funny, but her classes are boring and her test are IMPOSSIBLE. Our class average was a 63 for the midterm. Also, you must participate in her classes to get a good grade. Her assingments are dificult, but do-able. If you try on the assingments and participate, you should be fine. If you know HR... take this class, if not, choose another class to take. Dont let her intimidate you. Shes a nice lady
